As mentioned earlier, mainly round steel and steel of a periodic profile are used as reinforcement in the form of individual bars with a diameter of up to 40 mm, as well as welded or connected into reinforcing cages.
For elements of massive reinforced concrete hydraulic structures, such as locks, with large cross-sections, it is advisable to use rods of large diameters up to 90-120 mm. In addition to round steel, steel and other profiles are used as reinforcement.
According to the purpose in concrete, the reinforcement is divided into working, distribution, assembly and clamps.
Working reinforcement absorbs mainly tensile forces arising in reinforced concrete structures from its own weight and external loads.
Distribution reinforcement is used to evenly distribute the loads between the working bars and to ensure the joint work of all reinforcement bars. In addition, distribution reinforcement connects the working rods to each other, preventing the displacement of the working reinforcement during concreting.
Distribution fittings are connected to work welding or wire stranding, resulting in a mesh or frame.
Clamps are used to prevent the appearance of oblique cracks in the beam near the supports and to tie the reinforcement into the frame.
Mounting reinforcement does not perceive any forces and is used both for assembling the frame and for ensuring the exact position of the working reinforcement and clamps during concreting. When concreting, mounting reinforcement is sometimes removed.
Fig. 42. Types of hooks at the ends of smooth reinforcing bars:
1 – semicircular hook for machine bending: 2 – semicircular hook with a straight section for manual bending
For better fixing of the reinforcement in concrete, the ends of the tensile reinforcing bars are bent in the form of hooks (Fig. 42).
Reinforcing bars (see chapter VI), thanks to reliable anchoring and increased adhesion to concrete, eliminate the need for hooks, which helps save metal.
For joint operation of reinforcement with concrete, it is necessary, in addition to the installation of hooks, to leave a layer of concrete around each rod; for this, the clear distance between the individual rows of reinforcing bars is made at least 25 mm, as shown in fig. 43. The same figure shows the so-called protective layer of concrete (between the reinforcing bars and the surface of the structure), which protects the reinforcement from the effects of fire during a fire and from rusting.
Fig. 43. The distance between the reinforcement bars and the value of the protective layer of concrete in the reinforced concrete beam and slab (dimensions in mm):
a – reinforced with conventional reinforcement: 1 – mounting rods; 2 – working rods of the plate; 3 – distribution rods of the plate; 4—working rods of the beam; b – reinforced with welded meshes and frames: 1 – beam frames;
2 – plate grids
In accordance with the technical specifications, the thickness of the protective layer for the working reinforcement of structures made of heavy concrete should be:
a) in slabs and walls up to 10 cm thick – not less than 10 mm;
b) in slabs and walls with a thickness of more than 10 cm and in the ribs of floors – not less than 15 mm;
c) in beams and columns with a longitudinal reinforcement diameter of up to 20 mm – not less than 20 mm, and with a reinforcement diameter of more than 20 mm – not less than 25 mm.
With a longitudinal reinforcement diameter of more than 35 mm, a protective layer thickness of at least 30 mm is recommended, and when using shaped rolled profiles – 50 mm.
Clamps and cross rods must be at least 15 mm from the concrete surface. In reinforced concrete pipes, the distance from the rod of longitudinal reinforcement to the inner surface of the pipe must be no less than to the outer.
In prefabricated reinforced concrete structures made of heavy concrete grade not less than 200, the thickness of the protective layer can be reduced by 5 mm, but in any case it must be not less than 10 mm for slabs and 20 mm for beams and columns.

Fig.
Fig. 43. The distance between the reinforcement bars and the value of the protective layer of concrete in the reinforced concrete beam and slab (dimensions in mm):
a – reinforced with conventional reinforcement: 1 – mounting rods; 2 – working rods of the plate; 3 – distribution rods of the plate; 4—working rods of the beam; b – reinforced with welded meshes and frames: 1 – beam frames;
2 – plate grids
In accordance with the technical specifications, the thickness of the protective layer for the working reinforcement of structures made of heavy concrete should be:
a) in slabs and walls up to 10 cm thick – not less than 10 mm;
b) in slabs and walls with a thickness of more than 10 cm and in the ribs of floors – not less than 15 mm;
c) in beams and columns with a longitudinal reinforcement diameter of up to 20 mm – not less than 20 mm, and with a reinforcement diameter of more than 20 mm – not less than 25 mm.
Rebar classification and technical requirements for steels
Rebar classification and steel specifications
Rebar classification. The reinforcement of reinforced concrete structures perceives mainly tensile forces. This makes it possible, using it together with concrete, to produce reinforced concrete structures for various purposes. Reinforced concrete is used to make structural elements of buildings and structures that work not only in compression, for example, columns, but also in bending and tension – slabs, beams, trusses for covering large spans. Steel reinforcement is classified by purpose, method of manufacture and subsequent hardening, surface shape and method of application.
According to the purpose, fittings are working and mounting. The working reinforcement perceives the forces arising under the action of loads on the structure. The amount of reinforcement is calculated in accordance with these loads. Depending on the orientation in the reinforced concrete structure, the working reinforcement can be longitudinal or transverse.
Longitudinal working reinforcement perceives tension or compression forces acting along the longitudinal axis of the element. For example, in the one shown in Fig. 15 beam, supported at the ends, the longitudinal working reinforcement is made of rods that resist tensile forces in the lower zone of the structure. To perceive the forces acting when bending at an angle of 45 ° to the longitudinal axis of the beam, the rods are bent. In columns, longitudinal reinforcement is installed to increase resistance to compressive forces.
Transverse reinforcement absorbs forces acting across the axis of the beam. Such reinforcement is made in the form of clamps or sections of rods located transversely in welded frames and meshes.
Mounting fittings are installed depending on the design and technological requirements. It is divided into distribution and constructive. Distribution fittings allow you to fix the working fittings in the design position. This is the important technological significance of distribution valves. In addition, it serves to more evenly distribute the forces between the individual bars of the working reinforcement. Stekni working and distribution fittings are welded or tied into a single spatial frame or flat grids. Sometimes distribution reinforcement is used to give the reinforcement cage the necessary rigidity.
Structural reinforcement is used to absorb forces that are not expected by the structure. In particular, this includes efforts from shrinkage of concrete, temperature changes. Structural reinforcement must be installed in places of a sharp change in the cross section of structures, where stress concentration occurs. Structures subjected to dynamic loads, such as crane beams and the cantilevers on which they rest, also require structural reinforcement.
According to the manufacturing method, steel reinforcement of reinforced concrete structures is divided into hot-rolled rod and cold-drawn wire.
Bar reinforcement is supplied in bars with a diameter of at least 12 mm and a length of up to 13 m, wire with a diameter of 3 … 8 mm – in coils or riots weighing up to 1300 kg.
According to the method of subsequent hardening, hot-rolled rebar can be thermally hardened, i.e. subjected to heat treatment, or hardened in a cold state – drawing, drawing.
According to the shape of the surface, reinforcement of a periodic profile and smooth are distinguished. Reinforcing bars of a periodic profile are equipped with protrusions, due to which its adhesion to concrete is improved. Reefs (dents) are created on the surface of the wire reinforcement for this purpose. Smooth reinforcement is produced in the form of hot-rolled rods with a diameter of 6 … 40 mm or wire with a diameter of 3 … 8 mm. To prevent slippage of smooth reinforcement in concrete, it is anchored.
According to the method of application in the reinforcement of reinforced concrete structures, a distinction is made between prestressed reinforcement subjected to prestressing and non-tensioned reinforcement.
In some cases, so-called rigid reinforcement is used, in contrast to the commonly used flexible rods and wires. Rigid reinforcement is made from long products – channels, I-beams, equal-sided and unequal corners. Until the concrete hardens, such reinforcement works like a metal structure under the load from its own weight, the weight of the formwork attached to it and the freshly laid concrete mixture. Rigid reinforcement is used when concreting large-span ceilings, heavily loaded columns of the lower floors of multi-storey buildings.
Fig. 16. Coupling of reinforcement with concrete: 1 – concrete, 2 – smooth reinforcement, 3 – reinforcement of a periodic profile
Specification for reinforcing steel. These include requirements for strength, ductility, weldability, and cold brittleness.
Strength is determined by tensile testing of steel specimens. The main characteristic of the strength of low-carbon reinforcing steels is the yield strength.
The strength of hot-rolled reinforcing bar steel is significantly – several times – increased by thermal or thermomechanical hardening, wire – by cold deformation. Thermal hardening consists of hardening and partial tempering of steel. Hardening is carried out by heating the rods to a temperature of 800 … 900 °C and rapid cooling, tempering – by heating to a temperature of 300 … 400 °C and gradual cooling. Thermomechanical hardening is carried out by heating, plastic deformation and subsequent heat treatment of reinforcement. This increases the strength of bar reinforcement up to 1800 MPa.
Wire reinforcing steel is hardened by cold deformation by passing it through several holes successively decreasing in diameter. To obtain the steel structure necessary for such cold drawing, the wire is subjected to preliminary heat treatment – patenting. It consists in heating the wire to a temperature of 870 … 950 °C, rapid cooling to a temperature of 500 °C, holding and cooling in air. Using this technology, high-strength reinforcing wire is produced.
The strength characteristics of the reinforcement are normalized, as a rule, by resistance to tensile forces. In some structures, reinforcement is used as an element that enhances the work of concrete in compression. In this case, the resistance of the reinforcement to compression is normalized. It is taken equal to the design tensile strength, but not more than 400 MPa.
The plastic properties of reinforcing steels are important for the normal operation of reinforced concrete structures under load, the mechanization of reinforcing work. A decrease in the plastic properties of steel can cause a brittle (sudden) rupture of reinforcement in structures, a brittle fracture of prestressing reinforcement in places of a sharp bend or when fastened in grips. Therefore, the plastic properties of reinforcing steels must be normalized. Plasticity is characterized by total relative elongation after sample rupture, %, as well as by the results of a cold bend test.
Weldability of reinforcing steels is characterized by a reliable welded joint, the absence of cracks and other metal defects in the seams and adjacent areas.

Fig. 43. The distance between the reinforcement bars and the value of the protective layer of concrete in the reinforced concrete beam and slab (dimensions in mm):
a – reinforced with conventional reinforcement: 1 – mounting rods; 2 – working rods of the plate; 3 – distribution rods of the plate; 4—working rods of the beam; b – reinforced with welded meshes and frames: 1 – beam frames;
2 – plate grids
In accordance with the technical specifications, the thickness of the protective layer for the working reinforcement of structures made of heavy concrete should be:
a) in slabs and walls up to 10 cm thick – not less than 10 mm;
b) in slabs and walls with a thickness of more than 10 cm and in the ribs of floors – not less than 15 mm;
c) in beams and columns with a longitudinal reinforcement diameter of up to 20 mm – not less than 20 mm, and with a reinforcement diameter of more than 20 mm – not less than 25 mm.

43. The same figure shows the so-called protective layer of concrete (between the reinforcing bars and the surface of the structure), which protects the reinforcement from the effects of fire during a fire and from rusting.

a – reinforced with conventional reinforcement: 1 – mounting rods; 2 – working rods of the plate; 3 – distribution rods of the plate; 4—working rods of the beam; b – reinforced with welded meshes and frames: 1 – beam frames;
2 – plate grids
In accordance with the technical specifications, the thickness of the protective layer for the working reinforcement of structures made of heavy concrete should be:
a) in slabs and walls up to 10 cm thick – not less than 10 mm;
b) in slabs and walls with a thickness of more than 10 cm and in the ribs of floors – not less than 15 mm;

Fig. 43. The distance between the reinforcement bars and the value of the protective layer of concrete in the reinforced concrete beam and slab (dimensions in mm):
a – reinforced with conventional reinforcement: 1 – mounting rods; 2 – working rods of the plate; 3 – distribution rods of the plate; 4—working rods of the beam; b – reinforced with welded meshes and frames: 1 – beam frames;
2 – plate grids
In accordance with the technical specifications, the thickness of the protective layer for the working reinforcement of structures made of heavy concrete should be:
a) in slabs and walls up to 10 cm thick – not less than 10 mm;
b) in slabs and walls with a thickness of more than 10 cm and in the ribs of floors – not less than 15 mm;
c) in beams and columns with a longitudinal reinforcement diameter of up to 20 mm – not less than 20 mm, and with a reinforcement diameter of more than 20 mm – not less than 25 mm.
Weldability of reinforcing steels is characterized by a reliable welded joint, the absence of cracks and other metal defects in the seams and adjacent areas.

working distribution mounting fitting clamps
Pros
Phenomenal sound quality
Rich set of connectivity features
Reasonably priced optional speakers
Cons
Dull design
If music quality is as important as enhancing the on-screen sound, you need to have the Sony HT-A5000 soundbar on your radar.
The high-end product is compatible with audiophile-grade Hi-Res Audio content, as well as 360 Reality Audio, with the latter being a cutting-edge audio format for lifelike listening. To top things off, like the tech giant’s headphones and audio players, the soundbar can make compressed audio content sound better via sophisticated upscaling tech.
Of course, the Sony HT-A5000 can also produce awe-inspiring Dolby Atmos sound that’s worth every penny of its hefty price tag. The device’s onboard wired and wireless connectivity features are just as impressive.
Unlike similarly priced soundbars that cost a pretty penny to upgrade with additional hardware, the HT-A5000 has a rich selection of reasonably priced optional subwoofers and surround speakers.
The Polk MagniFi Mini AX is the best soundbar for enjoying cinematic sound in small spaces. Measuring less than 15 inches wide — on par with a good portable Bluetooth speaker — the Dolby Atmos product will instantly transform your space into a private movie theater with multidimensional sound and rumbling bass via its down-firing wireless subwoofer.
Polk Audio equipped the MagniFi Mini AX with five audio drivers, which deliver crisp and powerful audio that defies its impossibly compact housing. Best of all, despite its tiny size, the device doesn’t skimp on essential connectivity features like Wi-Fi, Apple AirPlay 2, and Google Chromecast, among others.

Can A Soundbar Interfere With WiFi? What You Need To Know!
Soundbars are becoming an essential component in many people’s entertainment setups. It’s the device that gives you a surround sound experience without the need to place multiple external speakers around the room. Your soundbar does give you great audio but is it interfering with your Wi-Fi?
Soundbars with Wi-Fi capabilities typically won’t interfere with a Wi-Fi network but can slow it down slightly. Soundbars that have wireless surround speakers or a subwoofer typically use a dedicated wireless frequency to avoid interfering with the 2. 4GHz and 5GHz frequencies used in Wi-Fi networks.
Put simply, your soundbar can interfere with your Wi-Fi network, even if it doesn’t produce a signal. If you use a soundbar with Bluetooth capability, for instance, this can interfere with your connection. A disrupted signal could lead to crashes and the loss of your network signal, effectively putting a stop to any streamed content.
How Wireless Interference Happens
Bluetooth connectivity is a convenient function that allows you to transfer audio from a device to a soundbar. Even though you can get great audio this way, problems with interference can occur. Wi-Fi signal interference happens when the Bluetooth frequency overlaps your wireless system (more on other reasons in our guide). The signal overlap occurs when the Bluetooth enabled device, which includes speakers and soundbars, operate at 2.4 GHz.
It is the same as your Wi-Fi signal. Another reason for interference is the soundbar has one or more wireless satellite speakers. One example is the Nakamichi Shockwave Ultra (on Amazon). With multiple speakers that include both wireless subwoofers and rear surround effects speakers, there are several signals bouncing around the room.
Troubleshooting Wireless Interference
You don’t have to give up on your soundbar or its satellite speakers to avoid network interference. There are a few things you can try that might resolve the problem. The first one has to do with your satellite speakers. Before you start moving components around or disabling most of them, start with your satellite speakers.
Most satellite speakers that come with soundbars are only designed to give you the feeling you’re listening to surround sound. The speakers do improve overall audio quality but aren’t necessary. You’ll still hear music, shows, and movies without having to crank the volume up, and the speakers may be the reason for the interference with your internet signal.
Additional Troubleshooting Steps
Check where you have the Wi-Fi router placed. When it’s too close to the soundbar, the signals can bounce off of each other, resulting in interference. Sometimes, all it takes is moving your router further away from your soundbar to resolve the problem. You also want to check your router’s settings.
If you’re on the auto channel selection option, switch the preference off. Instead, use the 5 GHz wireless band setting, (if your router comes with that option). Moving as many components as possible to the 5 GHz channel will minimize the chances of the various signals interfering with each other and leading to a dropped connection.
Other Devices That May Be Affecting Wi-Fi Performance
While your soundbar can cause interference with your wireless signal, it’s not the only possible culprit. Other devices can cause the same problem. Thankfully, it’s usually an easy fix so look around the room and see what devices are next to your router. Cordless telephones, microwaves, and some baby monitors also use a signal similar to the router’s 2. 4 GHz internet band.
These and other electronic devices might be the problem, instead of your soundbar. So try moving the components away from the router; you also want to ensure your router isn’t blocked by any other objects.
Your Neighbors Can Affect Wi-Fi Performance
Most people have neighbors living only a few feet away. It can build closer communities but your neighbor’s Wi-Fi devices can interrupt your network signal. Since you can’t ask your neighbors to turn off their Wi-Fi enabled devices, including their routers, you’ll need to find another option.
The problem with interference from a neighbor’s Wi-Fi signal usually occurs in townhouses and apartment complexes. Instead of sticking to one signal, the proximity of other routers can cause yours to constantly search for a better signal. If you have a wall free from neighbors in your home, try moving the router there. The distance may prevent it from constantly searching for a signal.
Distance, Height, and Wi-Fi Interference
You do want to be careful how far away you move your router because distance also causes interference due to a weaker Wi-Fi signal. You want to keep the router as close as possible to your connected devices. Since most people have Wi-Fi enabled devices throughout their home, many of which we’ve explored in our article on smart home devices, you want to find a central location to place the router.
Additionally, height is also something to look at. You don’t want your router on or close to the floor because the signal often bounces off the floor, weakening it before it reaches your devices. Optimally, you want to place the router up high because it will help maximize signal strength, reducing your risk for interference.
Wi-Fi Interference and Soundbars
Your soundbar can interfere with your Wi-Fi signal, especially when you’re also using satellite speakers, because the signals can bump into each other, disrupting the one from your router. When this happens, you can temporarily lose your internet connection, however, there are steps you can take to resolve the issue and it won’t take a lot of time. One of the easiest is to use your router’s 5 GHz channel for most of your connected devices.
You also want to check the router’s placement. Are there other non-connected devices nearby or objects placed in front? These can also interfere with the Wi-Fi signal. Whether you have to move devices to another channel or reposition the router, it’s worth the effort when you can use your soundbar without worrying about signal interference.

Choice of soundbar with wireless subwoofer, karaoke, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi
Soundbars have become widespread not so long ago, but have already managed to gain popularity and fall in love with devoted fans of quality sound. As a rule, those who want to make the sound of the TV more powerful and voluminous, without buying a home theater, want to buy a soundbar. Despite the fact that the device itself is not very complicated, choosing it is often confusing, especially for those who buy a soundbar for the first time. If you decide to equip your TV with a soundbar and are lost in the diversity of the range, check out our recommendations.

Key features
If you are wondering how to choose a soundbar, you are most likely familiar with the main features of this device. The word “SoundBar” in translation from English means “sound bar”, and if literally – “sound bar”. This is not surprising: the appearance of the bathroom bar resembles an elongated oblong bar with or without a subwoofer. The soundbar is a fairly compact thing that will become an element of a modern interior without taking up much space. It is usually placed under the TV, providing quality sound while watching your favorite movies and TV programmes.
The very first sound projectors (they are also soundbars) appeared in 1998 and were presented by the manufacturer Altec Lansing. Even then they looked like a closed acoustic stereo system, however, the subwoofer was purchased separately. The speakers were located on the front surface and, due to the interference of sound waves, created the effect of spatial, deep sound. Soundbars have become the best option, combining excellent picture quality and surround sound that only enhances audio and visual effects. Indeed, in order to purchase a real home theater, you will have to spend a lot of money, moreover, such a system takes up a lot of space and requires lengthy installation and installation.
There are many types of soundbars on the electronics market today. All of them have different characteristics, design, functions, have different purposes, support for media formats, connection type and bundle. Below we will briefly review the different types of soundbars, because the choice of a home soundbar primarily depends on its technical characteristics and purpose.
Types of soundbars
The first classification of devices: by connection method to your TV:
Direct to your TV. These soundbars are called active soundbars.
By connecting via an AV receiver, these are passive type soundbars.
The first connection method is, of course, much easier. In addition, active soundbars are ready-made systems , where all the necessary components are built in: speakers, digital processor and sound amplifiers directly. But, according to most buyers, only passive-type devices are able to provide the highest quality sound reproduction. They are not equipped with a digital processor.
The advantage of passive type panels is that in this case you can use your receiver or external amplifier to connect and experiment with the settings at your own discretion, combine with a subwoofer as you like.
Second classification: by purpose and function set . As you know, the very first speaker systems assumed the expansion of the sound capabilities of the TV and were purchased by consumers solely for one purpose. But times are changing rapidly, and modern manufacturers are equipping equipment with new features and chips, making devices truly multifunctional. So, the latest models often interact perfectly with memory cards and disks, come with built-in Wi-fi, perform Smart-TV functions, synchronize via Bluetooth, and work in conjunction with smartphones and other gadgets. In general, soundbars can be divided into tri-category :
Standard TV speaker replacement.
Home theater acoustic component in a compact package with surround sound quality.
Multifunctional speaker system with which you can listen to music, playing it from different sources.
The main criteria when choosing a soundbar
When buying a soundbar, pay attention to the following characteristics:
Multi-channel sound: for or against
Any number of dynamic components equipped with special amplifiers can be placed in one small soundbar cabinet. As a result, the soundbar, while technically remaining at one point, is able to provide any distribution of sources. We may feel that the sound is moving – approaching or moving away – depending on what exactly the image shows us.
How many channels the soundbar design provides for depends on its final cost.
The simplest and most inexpensive models are the with two channels : they have the ability to decode multi-channel audio technology Dolby Digital / DTS. Three-channel soundbars can be considered quite an acceptable option. More advanced modifications are equipped with five and seven channels. They use DSP technology and room equalization or a combination of these processes to create surround sound.
Subwoofer
It is high-quality and powerful basses that, as a rule, create an effective acoustic sound. A soundbar with a subwoofer is a subject of frequent debate among audio lovers. Many argue that a speaker with low frequencies is not needed at all to form an excellent sound. In addition, some manufacturers have begun using Atlantic Tech’s H-PAS technology, which greatly improves the low-frequency response of small-sized speakers.
There are models with a built-in subwoofer – just keep in mind that the size of the panel itself is significantly increased.
Still, if we consider the range of electronics, preference is given to models with an additional subwoofer, most often wireless . Wireless subs connect to the main body of the device using various technologies such as Bluetooth. In any case, a soundbar with a traditional or modern wireless subwoofer is a must if you are a true connoisseur of quality bass when playing movies or music.
Connection sources
If you use active types of devices (that is, connected directly), decide which information from which sources you are going to play. The type and number of connectors on the soundbar depends on this. Connector combinations may vary depending on the type, manufacturer and cost: digital audio input and output, two optical and the same number of coaxial, mini-jack.
To sync with smartphones, it is best to use soundbars equipped with USB ports, as well as Bluetooth and other types of wireless connection.
Modern models almost universally use Bluetooth technology in connection with various gadgets and portable devices.
Control
The soundbar can be controlled in various ways: mechanical or touch buttons on the case, using the remote control and even a mobile phone. The most common is to control the with the remote. You can adjust the volume of the satellites, subwoofer, change the equalizer, FM tuner settings, turn the device’s power on and off.
Dimensions
Not the most fundamental, but also an important criterion. The soundbar should not take up much space and draw attention to itself. It is best if it is compactly placed directly under the TV cabinet . In terms of design, in most cases, soundbars do not differ much in appearance, although there are various colors and shapes – try to make sure that the device fits correctly into the style of your interior.
Additional features
Optical drive, Blu-Ray support – not the most essential, but still very useful features if you want to go beyond the usual sound system connected to the TV.
Wi-Fi and Smart-TV support, karaoke devices. Network integration via Wi-Fi means the ability to connect DLNA devices and provide Smart TV functionality. For most modern TV models, this is not entirely relevant, but if your device is not equipped with such wide capabilities, it can easily be “upgraded” using the same soundbar.
Conclusion
Devices such as soundbars are becoming more and more popular every year. Of course, they are not able to replace a full-fledged speaker system. But if there is a desire to reproduce high-quality sound, to achieve the maximum spatial effect when watching movies and TV programs, then there is only one answer: choose a soundbar, preferably with a subwoofer.
We’ve currently tested sixteen Sony soundbars. Sony produces sturdy, well-built soundbars. They tend to excel in dialogue reproduction, but their lack of sound enhancement features can be a drawback if you want a touch more bass or treble in your mix. As Sony produces soundbars at several price points, they can range in features.

The best Sony soundbar we’ve tested is the Sony HT-A7000 with Speakers + Bass Module. This 7.1.2 setup gives you a versatile overall performance with everything from music to movies to TV shows, with many features on hand to make the most of its sound. As with most premium soundbars, there’s a room correction feature to optimize the bar’s audio reproduction based on the unique acoustics of your living space—it’s called Sound Field Optimization. With it on, the bar’s sound is fairly balanced, meaning everything from dialogue in your favorite movies to instruments in your favorite music are clear and accurate in the mix. The sub brings the rumble in the bass, so you feel the excitement in bass-heavy genres like EDM and action-heavy movies, just like you would at a movie theater.
This soundbar supports lots of common audio formats. You can enjoy 5.1 surround sound content like Dolby Digital, and the included rear speakers bring a clear and real feel to your audio, so sound effects seem like they’re coming from the space around you. There’s Dolby Atmos support, too, so you can take advantage of more immersive object-based formats commonly found on streaming services. That said, no soundbar is perfect. It’s a good choice, but it doesn’t have a lot of options to customize its sound. Given its balanced sound out-of-the-box, you might have an issue—but if you love to control your bar’s sound, you can check out more customizable setups like the Samsung HW-Q990B or the Bose Smart Soundbar 900 with Speakers + Bass Module instead.

If you’re looking for a more affordable alternative, consider the Sony HT-A5000. It’s a mid-range option released in 2021 as a more affordable alternative to the Sony HT-A7000. Its soundstage isn’t as wide as the HT-A7000, so you don’t quite get the same immersive feel, and it comes with one less HDMI port—otherwise, the bars perform very similarly. You get the same selection of sound enhancement features, including Sony’s Sound Field Optimization room correction feature. It also supports Dolby Digital and Dolby Atmos content, just like its premium cousin.
With its balanced sound, you don’t have trouble following the action on your screen, as voices and lead instruments are clearly and accurately reproduced right out of the box. A standalone soundbar like this is a great alternative if you don’t have a lot of space in your setup. That said, if you use the soundbar on its own, there are some tradeoffs in the sound. First, you don’t feel as much rumble in the low-bass, which is especially noticeable on bass-heavy soundtracks and action-centered scenes. Also, without rear satellites, you don’t get the same life-like feel with surround sound content.
Audio seems like it’s coming from speakers placed in front of you rather than from all around you. What’s handy about this setup is that you can always purchase a separate sub and satellites from the manufacturer separately, meaning if you move to a larger space down the line, you can upgrade it for a more cinematic sound. If you don’t mind the same tradeoff on the soundstage performance, you may find that this bar provides a better value overall.

The Sony HT-G700 is a more wallet-friendly option from Sony’s 2020 lineup. This 3.1 soundbar has a simple design that makes it easy to plug into your TV for an improved sound. Right out of the box, dialogue is clearly reproduced, and voices and lead instruments are present and accurate in the mix. There are a few EQ presets on hand to switch up its sound and a dialogue enhancement mode. However, compared to the Sony HT-A5000, you won’t find a room correction tool, so it sounds a little different depending on your space.
Still, this soundbar supports many of the common audio formats that you’re likely to come across on streaming platforms, like Dolby Digital and Dolby Atmos. It has to downmix them to play them, but the bar’s built-in S-Force PRO virtual surround feature is designed to give a more immersive sound. It can sound a little fake and forced, though, and ultimately it doesn’t have the same cinematic feel as the top picks on our list. That said, it’s still a fine choice if you want an upgrade over your TV speakers without all the extra bells and whistles.

If you’re shopping on a budget, check out the Sony HT-S400. This entry-level 2.1 model is an affordable option for those who want a simple upgrade over their existing TV speakers. It’s smaller and more compact than some of the more premium models on this list, too, so it doesn’t take up a lot of space in your setup. Add on the subwoofer to enjoy the thump and rumble in the bass, especially with bass-heavy genres like EDM and hip-hop. The subwoofer level adjustment lets you control the amount of punch in the mix, too, so you have some control over the bar’s sound.
With a 2.1 setup, this bar is ideal for listening to stereo content, which includes most music and vocal-centric TV shows like sitcoms. The dialogue enhancement tool is designed to make voices more clear in the mix, too, which is great for following along with your favorite shows. That said, compared to the Sony HT-G700, this soundbar doesn’t support more immersive audio formats like Dolby Atmos. 5.1 surround sound is downmixed into stereo, which doesn’t bring the most clear and real feel. Still, for the price, it does a solid job improving your TV’s sound.

The acoustics of your living space impact how you perceive the sound of your setup—that’s especially true for those who have larger, more open living spaces. Fortunately, some offerings are better suited to meet your needs, including the Sony HT-A9 with Bass Module. This 4.1.4 setup has a unique design that pushes the boundaries of our definition of the soundbar. It replaces the wide “bar” with a control box and two left and right stereo speakers, while its two satellites can be placed anywhere in your setup to stretch its sound around you. It gives you more flexibility than a traditional bar, as you can move each satellite to different locations based on your preferences.
The bar’s soundstage is wide and immersive, rivaling the performance of other top-of-the-line setups on the market. Sound stretches all around you as if your couch were dropped right into the middle of the action. The additional subwoofer brings more thump and punch in the bass range, so you feel your seat rumble during action-packed scenes. The Sound Field Optimization room correction feature is available, too.
Unfortunately, the bar lacks a discrete center channel. Sony has a feature that lets you use a compatible BRAVIA TV as the bar’s center channel, which they call Acoustic Center Sync. However, there’s a noticeable difference in the volume level between the bar and the TV when you use this feature, so it’s not ideal for enhancing sound quality. If you’re a more casual listener, the holes in the soundstage aren’t too noticeable, but it’s worth mentioning for audiophiles who want the best possible experience.

Compared to other brands
Well-built design.
Sony soundbars have a generally sturdy build, thanks to their plastic and metal design.
Good for dialogue.
Most Sony soundbars are well-suited for dialogue content, especially when combined with their Dialogue Enhancement feature, and the audio produced is clear and accurate.
Lacking sound enhancement features.
Most Sony soundbars lack bass or treble adjustment, which can be less than ideal as some of these soundbars have a less-than-neutral sound profile. Sony only provides preset EQs, so you can’t customize or fine-tune your audio experience the way you like. None of the Sony soundbars offer a room correction feature.
Poor surround sound.
All of the Sony soundbars we’ve tested tend to have inadequate surround sound, even with those that use Sony’s S-Force Front Surround to simulate the experience.
Sony vs Samsung
Samsung and Sony both create soundbars that are available at a wide array of price points to address different segments of the market. Their top-of-the-line models include Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support, as well as tools like room correction to optimize their sound. More budget-friendly options are available from both to address stereo listeners. However, Samsung soundbars tend to come with far more sound customization tools, including graphic EQs.
Sony vs Sonos
While Sony’s products are available at many different price points to address a more broad range of users, Sonos is a more premium soundbar manufacturer that generally produces more premium setups. Sonos bars come with built-in smart features like voice assistants, and they use psychoacoustic principles to create wider and more immersive soundstages than other setups. However, Sonos offers fewer options at budget-friendly price points, and they might not be worth the value for those who want a simple upgrade over their TV speakers.
Sony vs Bose
Bose is a premium soundbar manufacturer that focuses on creating premium, top-of-the-line offerings with built-in smart features like voice assistant control. Sony offers similar devices with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support, as well as voice assistant capabilities. However, Sony has more options available at budget-friendly price points, and they may be a better value for users who mostly listen to stereo content.
Sony makes a wide range of soundbars at several price ranges, so it’s easy to find one that works for your budget. Although this range is large and available features vary, Sony soundbars are generally well-built but ordinary in overall sound performance. When compared to Samsung soundbars, Sony isn’t as well-rounded in performance. Some models can also struggle to produce a deep, rumbling bass suitable for movies or music. Since most Sony soundbars lack bass and treble adjustments, the basic preset EQ offered in their place may not be enough customization for some users. These soundbars are well-suited for dialogue-centric content and will be more than adequate for everyday use.
Lineup
Sony has a couple of different soundbar lineups on the market, but their naming strategy isn’t very clear. Soundbars in a particular lineup generally address a certain segment of the market based on price; however, you may find a model with similar features under a different lineup on the market at the same time. Here are a few of their common naming conventions:
A Series: Sony’s top-of-the-line releases from 2021 and 2022.
S Series: Sony’s more budget-friendly options from 2017 to 2022.
Others, like the Sony HT-G700 and the Sony HT-Z9F, seem to be standalone models that don’t come as part of a broader lineup.

Conclusion
Sony is a well-known brand offering a variety of soundbars across several price points. Overall, they’re sturdy and well-built. They’re also well-suited for reproducing dialogue, which is great for your favorite TV shows and audiobooks. Unfortunately, if you don’t like their default sound profile, Sony only provides EQ presets, making it challenging to fine-tune your audio experience.

At the top end of the soundbar market, there are two schools of thought. The first is that costlier models warrant additional speakers for enhanced bass and surround performance. The second is that a single, high-quality soundbar should be able to competently deliver excellent treble clarity, bass and a room-filling sound on its own – with extra boxes available (though not necessary) to suit the taste, homes and pockets of the buyer.
The Sony HT-A7000 falls firmly into the latter camp. This 7.1.2 slab of sound packs two up-firing speakers, two beam tweeters, five front-facing drivers and a built-in dual subwoofer into a single chassis.
And it’s an approach that appeals. After all, isn’t the point of a soundbar that it delivers cinematic audio without the need for lots of speakers? Of course, we also understand that low frequencies are most faithfully reproduced by larger drivers and that reflected surround sound is no match for direct audio. Often though, we’ve found that multi-box systems aren’t cohesive as a whole and rather than increase the perception of immersive and realistic sound, if they’re not all top performers, the sub and surrounds become distracting. Which rather defeats the point.
Sony HT-A7000 at Sony UK for £1,299
Price
Standing proudly on its own two (rubberised) feet, the HT-A7000 doesn’t require any additional speakers to justify its hefty price point of £1199 / $1300 / AU$1699 or its position as Sony’s flagship soundbar.
However, if you did want to add to the HT-A7000, you could almost double that price. There’s a choice of two subwoofers, the 300W SA-SW5 priced at £699 / $700 / AU$899, and the 200W SA-SW3 costing £449 / $400 / AU$599. A pair of surround SA-RS3S speakers costs £449 / $350 / AU$649 and, slightly disappointingly at this price, they only have front-facing drivers.
The HT-A7000 replaces the Sony HT-ST5000, which was £1499 / $1500 (around AU$2830) at launch in 2017. It undercuts LG’s top-of-the-line 7.1.4 package, the SP11RA, which costs £1499 (around $2050, AU$1849) and Samsung’s 11.1.4 package, the HW-Q950A, which currently costs £1399 / $1500 / AU$1795.
Both the LG and Samsung include a separate sub and a pair of wireless surrounds but a single bar solution in the style of the Sony A7000 would be the award-winning 5.0.2 Sonos Arc, which delivers impressive Atmos performance on its own for £799 / $799 / AU$1399, but can also be expanded through the addition of two One SL speakers (£358 / $358 / AU$538) and, if required, a Sub (£699 / $699 / AU$999).
Build
It may be just one unit but the HT-A7000 is an incredibly weighty 8.7kg and, at 8cm high, it’s taller than most, only just sneaking under the Sony A80J OLED TV that we test it with.
Described by Sony as an ‘Omnidirectional Block’ concept, shared by the rest of the range, the HT-A7000 is made up of a blend of materials, textures and shades of black, from the fabric covering the upward drivers and a perforated metal front grille, to the polished glass top surface and the greasy fingerprints that instantly appear on it after reaching for the capacitive function buttons. The build feels substantial and sturdy, although the mixed look of its design perhaps isn’t as slick as that of some of its competition.
While the main soundbar may be a bit unsure of its image, the included remote is firmly a ’90s throwback. Using this you can quickly access (almost) all of the A7000’s functions and check settings such as which audio format you’re currently listening to, with a scrolling text response on the front face of the soundbar. It’s a nice touch, but even better is the fully integrated on-screen set-up and options menu you get if you own a Bravia TV (Z9J, A90J, A80J, X95J, X90J, X85J or X80J series). Other AV brands have begun adding symbiotic technology to their soundbars and TVs but this is one of the best uses of it we’ve seen and is particularly useful given the heavy feature load of the A7000.
Features
The set-up and room calibration process for the A7000 is a breeze, as is connecting to streaming services such as Spotify Connect, Apple AirPlay 2, Google Chromecast, and integration into a multi-room system – with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Home all supported. It’s great to be able to get up and running without having to reach for your phone but, should you wish, the Sony Music Center app for Android and iOS offers another handy way to control the A7000. Our only gripe is that there aren’t any options to tweak the soundbar’s EQ bands on the remote. In fact, the only discrete tone settings available are three bass volume levels hidden away on the app’s sound settings.
The A7000 may be packed with streaming smarts but it is also heavily specced when it comes to physical connectivity too. Gamers and those whose TVs lack more than one spare HDMI port will be pleased to know there are two HDMI 2.1 pass-through sockets capable of handling 8K@60Hz, 4K@120Hz, and Dolby Vision HDR. While that sounds like full-fat HDMI 2.1, Xbox Series X (and, one day, PS5) users should note that at present the A7000 doesn’t support VRR or ALLM.

Alongside these inputs, there are sockets for eARC/HDMI out, analogue and optical audio inputs, USB type-A, power and an analogue output for Sony’s Acoustic Center Sync, which lets a compatible Bravia TV become part of the soundbar’s centre channel when the two are connected using the supplied cable.
There are so many connections that the cavern on the rear that’s designed to hold all the ports is on the cramped side, which is worth bearing in mind if you think you might want to access it regularly.
In terms of supported audio formats, the A7000 excels itself again and includes Dolby Atmos (in both the Digital+ and TrueHD formats), DTS:X, LPCM, wireless hi-res audio and Sony 360 Reality Audio. The last of those is an object-based spatial technology that surrounds the listener, with compatible content available from Tidal, Amazon Music HD, Nugs and Deezer.
Sound
Sony has opted to use a combination of driver placement and psychoacoustic techniques to enhance the width and height of the soundstage whether you’re watching immersive content or not, and it works very well. Alongside the upward drivers, there’s the company’s Vertical Surround Engine (VSE), which up-mixes standard content to make use of the height channels. But more key to the A7000’s overall performance are the wide-spaced beam tweeters, which channel audio through a series of flute-like chambers, and Sony’s S-Force Front Surround Technology, which is engaged when the ‘Cinema’ and ‘Standard’ sound modes are selected.
So effective and transparent is the performance of these wide tweeters that while watching the opening scene of Gravity in Dolby Atmos we repeatedly check that there isn’t a speaker immediately to our side.
As Sandra Bullock rotates on screen, unable to detach from the spinning robotic arm, the brilliant sound design is superbly rendered spatially, undulating upward and outward, beyond the scope of the image. Later on, as she floats into the depths of space, snatches of radio static and comms appear to be spread on either side of the listening position. In terms of height and precision, the performance is similar to that of the Sonos Arc but the width of the soundstage and its forward projection is more convincing. It’s not the same as having direct audio from the speaker above or the side but it’s effective and dramatically enticing, enriching the viewing experience.
The integrated sub also impresses with a taut, controlled and powerful performance that we haven’t heard from a single soundbar, besides the pricier Sennheiser Ambeo. Even when we push it to the extremes with the pulsating synths of Blade Runner 2049, the subwoofer of the A7000 handles itself well with a strong leading edge while retaining musicality, though we do notch down its volume level from high to medium. The Vangelis-inspired score is reproduced with an appropriately epic sense of scale while retaining finer details. Dropping into quieter moments, the A7000 neatly picks out dialogue with transparent clarity.
Swapping to Nomadland, which has a more restrained but still compelling Atmos sound design, the A7000 confirms its ability to handle lighter, nuanced sounds. The excellent depth of field means that changes of location are stark and powerful. Inside the van, with the subtle noises of the world passing by outside, the viewer feels tightly enclosed. From the cavernous clanking Amazon plant to the gentle winds and vast empty reverb of the open desert, the A7000 places you firmly into each space.
Throughout the film, dialogue is naturalistically, and often quietly, spoken – but once again the A7000 shows excellent presence, and while adding in the Sony TV to bolster the centre channel doesn’t dramatically alter the already impressive soundfield, it nicely adds to the openness and character of voices. Should you need it there’s a dialogue boost setting, and if you’re watching DTS:X content you can individually adjust the dialogue level using the remote.
When streaming music we find that keeping the A7000 in Standard mode or the weighty Cinema setting is preferable to Music mode, which doesn’t make use of S-Force Pro Front surround technology. The vertical sound engine, which up-mixes tracks to make use of the height speakers, is best left to classical or acoustic tracks without heavy rhythmic elements.
The deep, hypnotic bass in Björk’s Hyperballad is punchy, confident and rounded, with only the very lowest notes flattened off slightly. There’s plenty of headroom to push the volume but it’s unlikely you’ll need to venture above 70 unless you have very understanding neighbours.
In Led Zeppelin’s Ramble On, the clipping percussive transients, kick drum and bass maintain taut rhythmic coherence, while the guitars and vocals have plenty of separation with just the right amount of melody and edge.
Switching to the dynamically diverse Et In Carnatus Est and Santus of Mozart’s Grosse Messe there’s a pleasant warmth and consistency in the strings across the lower midrange, and the sub makes a decent attempt at the majestic timpani rolls and organ bursts. Here the vertical surround engine is an enjoyable addition and seems to add a touch of sweetness to the higher frequencies.
We decide to road test a few 360 tracks from Tidal’s catalogue for good measure and quickly realise that not all 360 tracks are created equal. For example, Foo Fighters’ Everlong on the A7000 feels a touch boomy and cluttered whereas the drum panning on Pearl Jam’s Alive fizzes with lively effervescence. Immersive audio is still very much a developing area for streaming companies but, for now, it’s a welcome bonus in an already feature-packed soundbar.
Verdict
The A7000 produces powerful, cinematic audio and an immersive, detailed soundfield from a single soundbar that impresses more than most multi-box systems.
If there were no limits to our income or living space we’d happily add the optional surrounds and sub, but the A7000 does not feel wanting of any extra support. It’s an incredibly competent, future-proofed performer that enhances everything we watch and sets a new benchmark for Dolby Atmos soundbars at its price.

Sony HT-A3000 Review
The Sony A-Series Dolby Atmos home theater soundbars are really impressive. However, their prices start at $1,000. The HT-A3000 soundbar costs significantly less. This is what makes the HT-A3000 so interesting. But the price cut means cuts in several areas.
First and foremost is the absence of any upward-firing speakers that help reproduce Dolby Atmos sound with a height effect. So what are these compromises? In this review of the Sony HT-A3000, we will look at the strengths and weaknesses of the premium soundbar and try to answer the question of whether this model is worth buying.
Sony HT-A3000 Overview
Design
The Sony HT-A3000 soundbar is made entirely of matte black plastic. The speakers are protected by a dark gray metal grille. Measuring 950mm wide and 64mm high, it fits perfectly under almost any TV. If your TV has very low legs, the soundbar may be blocking its infrared (IR) sensor.
On the top of the panel are several touch controls for power, volume, input selection, Bluetooth activation. There are also shortcut keys to the music service. Behind the metal grille is a small OLED display that shows all the necessary status information, from the current input to the volume level and audio formats.
Many messages require text scrolling, which is not very convenient. It is possible to dim the display or turn it off completely. In addition to the soundbar itself, the package includes: an HDMI cable, a power cable, a remote control with two AAA batteries, a 3.5mm analog cable to send center channel audio to a compatible Sony TV, a quick start guide, a wall mounting template, and a complete user manual.
All of these are packaged in large styrofoam blocks. Like the soundbar itself, the included remote control is simple yet well thought out. The remote is clearly labeled but not backlit. It is quite difficult to use it in a dark room.
Surround sound quality
For normal two-channel stereo and even Dolby Digital 5.1 content, the A3000 sounds great. The dialogue quality is also excellent. The A3000 soundbar lacks dedicated dialogue speakers. Despite this, the dialogues sound very clear and legible, which is the first plus.
The built-in dual subwoofers do an excellent job of reproducing low frequencies given the size of this speaker. However, this is not the bass that can be felt in the chest. The monstrous steps of the T-Rex from Jurassic World Dominion will not make the sofa vibrate. But the sound is still powerful enough to give films a real emotional impact.
Another plus is Dolby Atmos playback. It goes without saying that a soundbar without dedicated speakers and a five-channel configuration cannot deliver Dolby Atmos 3D immersion as well as a bar that does. However, the A3000 soundbar sounds much better than other panels with the same sound design.
When the soundbar does not have separate speakers for each channel, it must virtualize them. The HT-A3000 soundbar is just that. Its digital signal processing simulates the presence of these missing channels. It should be noted right off the bat that many soundbars that try to do this simply can’t perform this kind of simulation.
Sony 360 Reality Audio tracks are also a joy to listen to with their real and immersive sound. For Atmos and DTS:X content, this virtualization is done automatically. In addition, there is an option to turn on the Sony sound field setting to get similar processing for all non-spatial audio content.
It should also be added that if the volume of the Sony HT-A3000 soundbar is set to less than a third, then the virtualization effect will be barely audible. The greatest effect is achieved at a volume level of 58% to 70%. However, we should not forget that the neighbors may not be happy with such a view.
Music sound quality
Music has always been a strong point in Sony models. The HT-A3000 soundbar handles a wide variety of genres well. The sound is well balanced, but there is a small “hole” in the middle range. The soundbar lacks some of the detail a user gets from a bar with a wide variety of dedicated speakers.
In the mid-frequency range, the sound quality can be called satisfactory. On the other hand, the high frequencies sound excellent, although a bit harsh at higher volume levels. Fans of heavy vocal genres will appreciate the sound.
If the overall sound signature doesn’t satisfy music lovers, the A3000 offers a host of impressive musical features to help make up for that. With built-in AirPlay 2 and Chromecast technologies, Apple and Android users can stream lossless music (up to 24bit/96kHz in the case of Chromecast).
It also supports the two leading spatial audio formats for music: Dolby Atmos Music (via HDMI from a TV) and Sony’s own 360 Reality Audio (360RA) via Chromecast. Tracks 360RA are able to deliver real pleasure.
Despite most of the advantages, the Sony HT-A3000 soundbar has one drawback. Equalizer settings are almost non-existent. This is the approach the company has taken across its entire A-Series lineup. The HT-A5000 and HT-A7000 soundbars are also devoid of EQ settings, with the exception of a few changes that can be made to the sound field mode.
Sound Expansion
A key advantage of Sony A-Series soundbars, in addition to their features and sound quality, is their versatility. All three line systems (A3000, A5000 and A7000) can be supplemented with two types of wireless subwoofers. These are SA-SW3, SA-SW5. It is also possible to complement the soundbar with two models of wireless surround speakers: SA-RS3S and SA-SW5.
The addition of the SA-RS5 allows the soundbar to use Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping, which definitely enhances the immersive experience for both TV and music streaming. The SA-SW3 adds the missing rumble and rumble.
Connections
Sony Soundbar patch panel HT-A3000 has one HDMI port with eARC and ARC audio return, a USB type A port, and a 3.5mm analog input for sending center channel audio to a Sony TV. If the TV does not support HDMI (ARC / eARC), then you can connect via the optical cable connector, which is not supplied with the device.
Moreover, formats such as Dolby Atmos, DTS:X or Dolby TrueHD will become unavailable to the user. Wireless connections include Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi. There is AirPlay 2 for synchronization with Apple devices. As for the price issue, the starting price in Europe is 700 euros.
HT-A3000 review summary
To conclude our review of Sony’s HT-A3000, the Dolby Atmos soundbar works great for both TV and music playback. The model has an impressive number of features that are easy to use thanks to a thoughtful and well-executed user interface.
Cons: no dedicated height speakers, no HDMI inputs and relatively high price. All of this means that you will need to seriously consider whether the Sony HT-A3000 Acoustic Bar is right for your specific needs. If the user is looking for a soundbar that will give them maximum audio versatility as well as full smart home compatibility, then the A3000 is a great buy.
That said, a $700 price tag can make a big difference in the soundbar world. Therefore, if you are not particularly interested in the ability to connect the soundbar to voice assistants and streaming music services, but just need a great Dolby Atmos soundbar, then you can spend less and still get a great sound system.
Pros Great sound for movies and music. Excellent screen settings. Extensive expansion options. Convincing virtual Dolby Atmos. Cons Expensive for Virtual Atmos. No HDMI input. No equalizer settings.

Excellent audio quality

The Polk Audio Signa S4 is our top pick for most buyers. It has an elegant design with a fabric finish, an effortless setup, and stellar audio performance with support for Dolby Atmos-enhanced sound. The product also has a reasonable price, especially considering its design and acoustic capabilities.
The soundbar delivers a cinematic sonic experience with powerful bass and crisp dialogue, and you can finetune both via its minimalist remote. We wish it had Wi-Fi connectivity for more seamless music streaming from mobile devices. The cheaper Polk Audio Signa S3 has Wi-Fi but lacks Dolby Atmos capabilities.

In a head-to-head comparison with the Polk Audio Signa S4, the TCL Alto 8+ stands its ground admirably, producing immersive sound with Dolby Atmos content. That said, I’d give the pricier Signa S4 a slight edge in cinematic audio for its ability to deliver crisper dialogues.

TCL’s Alto 6+ soundbar is our favorite for budget shoppers. It’s priced at around $100, and it has an easy setup, good sound quality for the money, onboard Bluetooth, and a bundled wireless sub. Hardware-wise, the Alto 6+ lags behind pricier products, but it’s still very dependable. It can’t deliver as much detail, but it’s a massive upgrade over the built-in speakers of just about any TV. It is compatible with Dolby Digital-enhanced content, too.

The product’s audio performance is worthy of its high price tag. The Soundbar 900 produces immersive and spacious sound, creating the impression of an audio system with multiple speaker units spread around your space — not just one soundbar.

Cons
Dated Bluetooth 4. 2 connectivity standard
The Wi-Fi-equipped Bose Smart Soundbar 600 is the compact soundbar to get, offering a fusion of sleek design, immersive Dolby Atmos sound, and a ton of smart features, including Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant integration to go with Chromecast and Apple AirPlay 2 connectivity. The latter also includes the option to connect a pair of Bose headphones wirelessly to enjoy content without disturbing anyone.
The 27-inch device’s five built-in drivers — two of which are upward firing — made it sound much bigger during my testing. The immersive sonic experience was second only to bigger and more expensive Dolby Atmos soundbars. You can supplement it with an external bass module and surround speakers, just like the bigger Soundbar 900.

Pros
Excellent audio quality
Elegant design
Reasonable price
Cons
No Wi-Fi connectivity

Dialogue output could be better
The latest TCL Alto 8+ soundbar is an excellent alternative to our top pick, with onboard Wi-Fi connectivity and a lower price tag. Impressively, the product is compatible with Apple AirPlay 2, Google Chromecast, and Spotify Connect. You can also control the playback with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri voice commands.

Pros

Cons

TCL’s Alto 6+ soundbar is our favorite for budget shoppers. It’s priced at around $100, and it has an easy setup, good sound quality for the money, onboard Bluetooth, and a bundled wireless sub. If you’re shopping on an even tighter budget, you can order an Alto 6 variant without a wireless subwoofer for less than $70.
Hardware-wise, the Alto 6+ lags behind pricier products, but it’s still very dependable. It can’t deliver as much detail, but it’s a massive upgrade over the built-in speakers of just about any TV. It is compatible with Dolby Digital-enhanced content, too.

Expensive, yes — but the Dolby Atmos-compatible Bose Smart Soundbar 900 is elegant and feature-rich in equal measure. Sporting a sleek glass and metal housing, it packs many smart features, including Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant compatibility, Chromecast, and Apple AirPlay 2 wireless playback.
The product’s audio performance is worthy of its high price tag. The Soundbar 900 produces immersive and spacious sound, creating the impression of an audio system with multiple speaker units spread around your space — not just one soundbar.
You create a full-fledged surround-sound system by adding a wireless bass module and surround speakers, though the upgrade will cost you. After months of testing, I found the standalone Soundbar 900 to be superb.
