But iPad mini 4 feels a bit different in hands. This is achieved due to the noticeably thinner thickness, which is now 6.1 mm versus 7.5 mm for the mini 3.

In addition, the weight of the tablet has also decreased, for the model with the 3G / LTE module it is 304 grams, and for the version with Wi-Fi only – 299 grams.

Accordingly, holding the device with one hand has become even easier, and its small thickness allows it to look neat even in a case.

The iPad mini 4 controls are traditional for Apple tablets. There is nothing on the left side of the tablet, on the right you can find the volume keys, and the power button is located on the top end.

Despite the introduction of 3D Touch technology on the screens of the new iPhones, which allows you to recognize the degree of pressing, the iPad mini 4 does not have such a function. However, this does not interfere with the comfortable use of the tablet, its display demonstrates excellent responsiveness to touch.

Platform and performance

Compared to the previous version of iPad mini that used the A7 processor, the new tablet is based on the 1.5GHz dual-core A8 chip. At the same time, the 4-core PowerVR GX6450 chip is responsible for graphics processing. But most importantly, the amount of RAM in the iPad mini 4 has increased to 2 GB, as in the iPad Air 2.

This has a very positive effect on the performance of the tablet. Now he can easily keep in the background even several heavy applications or a dozen tabs of sites in the browser, which can be returned to without a reboot.

iPad mini 4 has 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB of built-in storage. Unfortunately, the base version of the tablet is only available with 16 GB of memory, although it cost the company almost nothing to increase it to 32 GB.

The iPad mini 4 runs on the iOS 9 operating system, which differs from the previous version mainly in internal optimization.

However, there is one important innovation in it, which applies specifically to tablets. This is a multitasking mode, in which two applications can be placed side by side on the same screen.

This feature appeared in Samsung tablets and smartphones more than a year ago, but since it is not supported in Android itself, it does not work with all third-party programs. Something similar could be expected in iOS 9, but you have to give credit to Apple, the company managed to bring the implementation of this multitasking mode to the proper level. Of the two dozen third-party programs that I managed to try, most scaled and worked without any problems.

This function works quite simply, while in the application, just drag the screen from the left edge, after which a menu of icons with applications that can be opened in the adjacent window will appear. Then it is enough to expand the program to a quarter or half of the screen, and you can work with two applications at the same time. In some cases, this is really convenient.

Fingerprint Reader

The iPad mini 4 has a mechanical home button below the display with a fingerprint scanner. This is the same Touch ID sensor used on the iPhone 6/6 Plus and iPad Air 2. It works quite well, you can add 5 fingerprints to the scanner memory, but not as fast as the iPhone 6s/6s Plus.

Autonomy

Built-in iPad mini 4 battery capacity is 5124 mAh, which is noticeably less than 6470 mAh in mini 3. For the sake of a thinner case, Apple had to reduce the size of the battery. However, this did not affect the autonomy of the iPad mini 4 as much as one might expect. The tablet can continuously work for about 8 hours, with active Wi-Fi, background synchronization, games and watching videos.

iPad mini 4 turned out to be a good update of the 7.9 lineinch Apple tablets. The new tablet finally has all the benefits of the iPad Air 2, but only in a smaller and lighter package. As such, users who don’t want a 10-inch iOS tablet but expect high performance should look into the iPad mini 4. The only notable downside to this model is its price, and the fact that the most affordable version comes with only 16 GB of memory.
