Bookshelf speaker systems – this class of speaker systems got its name for its small size, namely for the small height of the case, which does not allow them to be installed directly on the floor. To install shelf speakers, special speaker stands are used, only with them you can achieve maximum sound quality. Bowers&Wilkins PM1

The PM1 is a luxurious compact speaker, the latest in a long line of audiophile mini monitors. It offers extremely high sound quality and a number of technological innovations. Among them is a new tweeter with carbon fiber hardening. Carbon fiber rings are wound around its aluminum dome, which increased the frequency of the 1st resonance to 40 kHz and provided a noticeable improvement in sound in the audible range up to 20 kHz. The PM1 case is also unlike anything Bowers & Wilkins has built so far. It combines a matrix internal structure with a curved front panel and top plate to improve the localization of sound images. The speakers are able to show a smooth, even and neutral balance as well as a clean and lively disposition. The sound is exceptionally cohesive, without any box overtones, with an excellent spatial stage.

One of the most impressive characteristics of the B&W PM1 is bass uniformity, and in this case, the compact size of the speakers played into the hands of this – larger acoustics of this type usually tend to dominate the mids and lows, since the bass reflex tuning frequency matches the room resonances. The case is assembled very thoroughly, using proprietary Matrix technology, which increases its rigidity. Audio Note AN-J/D Hemp

Music playback with an Audio Note speaker system defies the standard description, as it differs significantly from the traditional one that home listening lovers are used to. All components are designed and manufactured in-house and therefore harmonize perfectly. All the constituent components, like the instruments of a symphony orchestra, are selected and tuned to achieve perfect music reproduction. The result is the absence of tonal coloring of the sound and the most detailed representation of the soundtrack. Such a percentage of musical information is extracted from the recording, which a true music lover could only dream of. Audio Note speakers must be installed on their own stands.

The AN-J cabinet is a bass reflex cabinet made of birch plywood. The speakers have a sensitivity of over 93 dB/m, which allows them to work with low-power single-ended tube amplifiers, revealing all the advantages of the latter. Despite the small volume of the case, acoustics can be called full-range (drop -6 dB at a frequency of 25 Hz). The woofer-midrange cones are made of cellulose without any impregnation and have a low mass, which contributes to a fast, well-defined bass and transparent mids. The AN-Js are capable of reproducing the scale and intensity of well-recorded music with extreme realism. Like all other Audio Note speaker models, the AN-Js go through a rigorous speaker selection and matching process to ensure the tightest pairing tolerances in the audio industry.

Sonus Faber Guarneri Momento

Acoustic systems of the series dedicated to the great violin masters of the Baroque era, including our current model, are positioned by the company as musical instruments. The design was based on the cross-sectional shape of the upper soundboard of the lute. The manufacturing technique is also borrowed from the creators of musical instruments. The speaker cabinet consists of 21 elements, all of which are made of solid maple, dried in natural conditions for 2 years and bonded together with natural adhesives. The pressing technology is identical to that used in the production of violins. The inner surface of the case is equipped with damping elements made of copper and lead (according to the Russian distributor). Before the final varnishing procedure, the wooden panels are “sealed” with albumin to prevent the varnish from getting into the wood structure. Then ten layers of natural lacquer are applied to the prepared panels, just as it was done half a millennium ago in the manufacture of violins. The composition of the varnish includes: linseed oil, propolis, wine alcohol, natural wax, sandalwood extract and several other substances. The final polishing of the surfaces is done manually by one person.

Since the philosophy of the company is to use only 1st order crossover filters, the company always approaches the design of speakers with particular seriousness. For each model, Sonus faber orders speakers to individual specifications. Guarneri Memento has heads from two manufacturers. The HF is emitted by an inch ring membrane of the head, made on the basis of the Scan-Speak Revelator (woven two-radius diaphragm), the rear chamber for which is already machined from wood on Sonus faber. The 6″ mid/bass driver is manufactured by Audio Technology. Band separation frequency – 2500 Hz. The internal wiring is made with a Yter cable made from an alloy of silver and palladium. The front panel is traditionally covered with leather for Sonus faber. The phase inverter port is brought to the rear wall. Racks under Guarneri Memento deserve special attention. The design includes two parts: a stone base made of Sicilian shell rock, and a rack body made of metal and framed by elastic “strings” in a braid, in design reminiscent of AC grills. The systems are screwed to the racks, forming a monolithic structure – thus, the Guarneri Memento are actually floor standing speakers. The high weight of the rack and the combination of dissimilar materials are designed to completely eliminate parasitic resonances and provide sound solidity and good attack in the low frequency register. Slightly tilting the stand back gives the speakers a sleek look and appears to improve their sonic quality. Installation of acoustic systems on spikes is not provided. The first thing that attracts attention is the almost complete dissolution of acoustic systems in music. The sound is not tied to them, the soundstage is well defined and extends in depth. In addition, there is a very transparent “middle” and a complete lack of discreteness at high frequencies. The next reincarnation of Guarneri, having retained the exclusivity and dignity of the previous incarnation, has absorbed a lot of good things from modern technologies. The new speakers, exemplifying the latest advances in engineering, have allowed these speakers to become more versatile in reproducing music of different styles. Guarneri Memento can be recommended to all lovers of high quality audio, for whom the word “sound” has not replaced the word “music”. And also for those who are not indifferent to everything unique.
