Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G lens review

The Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G is a classic for cameras with a DX-format sensor. Small, light, comfortable, versatile prime, which is especially good for handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. Indoor portraits, photo walks, shots with pronounced bokeh are the “native element” of this lens, and in its price category it has no equal.

NIKON D7500 / 35.0 mm f/1.8 Settings: ISO 100, F1.8, 1/500 s, 52.0 mm equiv.

Prime lenses far outperform most zoom lenses, even at a five times price difference. This is due to the fact that the optical design of zoom lenses is very complex, and fixed distance lenses use only a few lenses. This model has 8 elements. The result is amazing detail and contrast even with the most budget lenses. True, the mass market prefers more versatile superzooms, so using a prime lens is often a sign of an “advanced user”.

NIKON D7500 / 35.0 mm f/1.8 Settings: ISO 100, F1.8, 1/100 s, 52.0 mm equiv.

On cameras with a DX-matrix, taking into account the crop factor, 35mm focal length gives about the same picture as 50mm lenses on full-frame cameras. This is a classic picture of a standard lens, familiar to the human eye, without pronounced distortion. And the open aperture provides beautiful background blur, bokeh, making this lens a great all-around lens.

Design The

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G measures 70x52mm and weighs 200 grams, so you can take it on long photo walks and travels without worrying about the weight of luggage. The main material is plastic, but the mount is made of metal. On the body is a small focusing ring and an autofocus switch. The lens is equipped with a built-in autofocus motor, which allows it to be used on cameras of the D3XXX and D5XXX series. With these cameras, the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G forms a very compact and powerful kit for the beginner photographer.

The lens focuses quickly, but sometimes it can “smear”, so it’s better to shoot in series and check the sharpness in the process of shooting. It affects the specifics of shooting with a shallow depth of field. When focusing, the rear lens moves (but does not rotate), while the outer part of the lens remains stationary, which protects against dust and makes it possible to use polarizing and gradient filters.

Inside the lens are 8 optical elements arranged in 6 groups, including one aspherical lens.

NIKON D7500 / 35.0 mm f/1.8 Settings: ISO 50, F6. 7, 1/180 s, 52.0 mm equiv.

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G is designed specifically for amateur cameras. The DX index indicates that this lens is not compatible with full-frame FX-format sensors. This allows designers to reduce lens size, lens weight and cost.

NIKON D7500 / 35.0 mm f/1.8 Settings: ISO 800, F2, 1/90 s, 52.0 mm equiv.

Optical characteristics

The distortion here is very pronounced, which is unexpected for a lens with a “classic” focal length. Take a look at the bookshelf example: of course, these distortions are much less than on wide-angle lenses, but for standard focal lengths their level is quite high. So use the in-camera built-in corrections or the Lens Correction feature in Adobe Lightroom and Camera RAW.

Vignetting is noticeable wide open. However, for portraits it’s even good. The darkening of the edges of the frame almost disappears if the aperture is covered. In most cases, you will only see vignetting in shots of a sheet of white paper.

Vignetting test

NIKON D7500 / 35.0 mm f/1.8 Settings: ISO 100, F1. 8, 1/750 s, 52.0 mm equiv.

NIKON D7500 / 35.0 mm f/1.8 Settings: ISO 100, F5.6, 1/60 s, 52.0 mm equiv.

NIKON D7500 / 35.0mm f/1.8 Settings: ISO 100, F16, 1/8s, 52.0mm equiv.

Sharpness

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G shows good sharpness at all apertures. Even at f/1.8 you get good detail, but with less contrast around the edges of the frame. At f / 2.8-4, there is no noticeable difference. The ideal aperture value is f/5.6–8. From f/11, diffraction begins to show up.

NIKON D7500 / 35.0mm f/1.8 Settings: ISO 100, F1.8, 1/30s, 52.0mm equiv.

NIKON D7500 / 35. 0mm f/1.8 Settings: ISO 100, F5.6, 1/3s, 52.0mm equiv.

NIKON D7500 / 35.0 mm f/1.8 Settings: ISO 100, F16, 3 s, 52.0 mm equiv.

Assembly0015 assembled perfectly. It is a reliable and strong lens with no moving external elements. Focusing is provided only by the rear lens, so nothing in front rotates or moves. Filters are screwed onto the lens barrel, not onto the lens rim. That is, they kind of close the body tube. Metal bayonet. However, for the harsh long-term practice of a travel photographer, I have never had problems with plastic mounts.

NIKON D7500 / 35.0mm f/1.8 Settings: ISO 100, F5.6, 1/40s, 52.0mm equiv.

Conclusions

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G is a classic amateur prime with excellent aperture and good picture in a durable and lightweight body. An ideal choice for photo walks, studio practice, indoor shooting, and portraits are its strongest point. It showed good sharpness even wide open, and the best detail is achieved at f / 5.6-8. Vignetting is noticeable wide open, but disappears at f/4 and above. Important advantages of the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G are its small size, light weight and robust body. At the same time, it is characterized by a noticeable distortion. And, perhaps, this is its only objective minus. We should also note compatibility only with DX-cameras (crop cameras), but we will not attribute this to disadvantages.

NIKON D7500 / 35.0 mm f/1.8 Settings: ISO 100, F8, 15 s, 52.0 mm equiv.

Pros:

– excellent drawing;
– very compact and durable;
– the best aperture ratio among amateur lenses;
– great for portraits and urban scenes;
– slight vignetting;
– good detail.

Cons:

– noticeable distortion.

9 0000 Review Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G AF-S DX Nikkor

Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical (abbreviated as Nikon 35mm f/1.8G DX ) was announced on February 9, 2009. Now this lens is quite popular and it is easy to find both new and used.

Review Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical

Briefly about Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8G SWM Aspherical

The Nikon 35mm f/1.8G DX is the standard fast fixed lens for Nikon DX cameras. In this case, the word ‘standard’ refers to the focal length and means that the lens gives a moderate angle of view equal to 44° diagonally across the frame.

Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX has large aperture . The maximum relative aperture that the lens aperture opens to is 1:1.8, which is a very good indicator. Usually Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX becomes an addition to ‘dark’ universal zoom lenses, such as Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII VR II AF-S DX Nikkor or Nikon 18-105mm 1: 3. 5-5.6 G ED Nikkor VR AF-S SWM DX IF Aspherical. If we compare the maximum aperture of F/5.6 used in these zoom lenses with F/1.8 used in the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G DX, the difference is more than 2 stops, which is about 10 times. Thus, the maximum aperture of this lens is 10 times greater than that of standard zoom lenses set to the extreme zoom position. Such a large aperture makes it easier to shoot in low light conditions. For example, at one time I shot wedding ceremonies and the baptism of a child with this lens without any problems.

Nikon 35mm f/1.8G DX is a prime lens, which means its focal length is always the same (no zoom function). Fixed lenses make it much easier and for a more modest price to get very good optical performance. So, this Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX has very good sharpness, inaccessible to a large number of zoom lenses. The

Nikon 35mm f/1.8G DX is also a very compact and lightweight lens, making it easy and simple to carry anywhere. Below you can see photos from my vacation, where I took a lightweight Nikon 35mm f/1. 8G DX along with a lightweight Nikon D40 camera.

To sum it up quickly, the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G DX is a ‘Must Have’ lens. 35 mm focal length on a Nikon DX camera gives the same angle of view as a lens with a focal length of 52.5 mm (actually the same ‘fifty knuckle’) on a Nikon FX camera. This lens is suitable for a wide range of photography tasks.

Designations on the lens Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical

Assembly

The copy from this review was made in China. The Nikon 35mm f/1.8G DX is quite pleasant to the touch, its plastic body does not cause any discomfort. It is very good that the lens uses a metal mount, which is at least some sign of a quality lens assembly. The lens uses common filters with a diameter of 52 mm.

Please note that the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G DX on the mount side has a special dust and waterproof mount seal, which is an indication that the lens has the basic dust and moisture protection. Unfortunately, the rest of the case is not protected from the negative influence of the external environment. More information on weatherproof Nikon lenses for SLR cameras can be found here. The

Nikon 35mm f/1. 8G DX uses a rubberized focus ring. There are bayonet mount marks on the body and a mark for quick installation of the hood. The lens uses a strong plastic hood HB-46, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The lens hood comes with the lens. The lens hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. In this position, access to the focus ring is completely lost.

The Nikon 35mm f/1.8G DX comes with a soft velor case CL-0913 that can be used to transport the lens.

Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8G SWM Aspherical Lens and Blades

Microprocessor Contacts and Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8G SWM Aspherical Lens Rear

Focusing

Nikon 35mm f /1.8G DX focuses quite quietly thanks to the ‘ SWM ‘-motor ( S ilent W ave M otor – quiet wave motor) and belongs to the ‘AF-S’ type lenses (with a built-in focus motor), and therefore will automatically focus on any Nikon digital SLR camera.

AF speed – medium . I want to note that Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX focuses slower than Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.8G SWM Aspherical and Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor. On Nikon D40 and Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro cameras, the lens focuses tenaciously and does not let objects out of focus. Please note that there are a lot of rumors on the net that the lens may not focus accurately (have ‘back’ or ‘front’ focus). For all the time I have used 4 different similar lenses, and they all worked and focused properly.

The front lens remains stationary during focusing. The lens uses RF (Rear Focusing) focusing, which is performed by moving the rear lens group. For practical use, focusing type RF is no different from focusing type IF (‘ I internal F ocus’ – ‘Internal Focus’). With this lens, you can easily use any filters, for example, polarizing ones.

The minimum focusing distance is only 30 cm, and you can shoot macro with magnification 1:6. 3 . Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX has neither a window with a distance scale, nor a depth of field scale, nor is there a mark for working in the infrared spectrum. In manual focus mode, the ring rotates approximately 90 degrees, when it reaches the extreme positions it does not rest, but continues to slide without affecting focusing. Focusing manually is not difficult. True, some users of this lens still blame the tight rotation of the focus ring.

The ‘M/A – M’ focus switch can be found on the lens barrel. In the ‘M / A’ position, auto focus works with constant manual focus priority. The ‘M / A’ mode is very convenient and useful – for manual focusing or focus correction, you do not need to additionally switch the lens to ‘M’ mode. You can turn on the ‘M / A’ mode and forget about this switch forever.

Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8G SWM Aspherical with lens hood Nikon HB-46

Aperture

The lens diaphragm consists of 7 rounded blades that form a fairly even aperture. Aperture closes to F / 22. The lens does not have an aperture control ring, and there is also no depth of field scale.

Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8G SWM Aspherical with Nikon HB-46 lens hood in transport mode

Lens capabilities on Nikon FX 9 full-frame cameras0236

Interesting: the lens has a good margin of performance, it can work with grief in half on Nikon FX full-frame cameras (which it is not designed to work with) here is a link to my sample photos on Nikkor AF-S 35mm f / 1.8G DX and full frame camera in image area FX mode.

Image quality

Good image quality is obtained due to the use of an aspherical element in the optical design of the lens. On foreign sites they write that the lens uses plastic inserts for a hybrid aspherical element, I did not find detailed information on this. Chromatic aberration ( XA ) are highly visible up to F / 3.2. The purple halo ( purple fringing ) greatly affects the quality of the image, which is difficult to remove even when shooting in RAW and post-processing. To catch such a halo, you need to try. The purple halo edging is the only serious drawback of this lens.

In general, the lens has a “creamy” bokeh. Don’t expect the lens to be very blurry at f/1.8 when shooting portraits. For portraits, any fifty dollars (50 mm prime lens) is better. I recommend reading my article on how to photograph with a blurry background.

The distortion of by 35 mm still remains and makes quite a lot of its negative adjustments.

The vinient is imperceptible at any aperture. Natural color reproduction , easily corrected by adjusting the white balance in the camera. The lens is very sharp at any aperture.

Alternatives to

If you are looking for a lens of this class, then the following lenses can serve as alternatives to at a similar cost or functionality:

  • Sigma 30mm F1. 4 DC HSM Art
  • Sigma 30mm 1:1.4 EX DC HSM
  • Nikon DX AF-S Micro Nikkor 40mm 1: 2.8G SWM
  • Yongnuo 35mm 1:2 (YN35mm F2N, for Nikon cameras)

My experience:

35 mm prime even on a DX matrix is quite short and unusual for me, but shooting with this lens is a fairy tale! Ergonomics and functionality are top notch. To all those who want to upgrade their kit lens, I recommend this particular Nikkor AF-S 35mm f/1.8G DX.
