Things to Consider When Buying a 60-Inch TV
There are several things to consider before purchasing a television. You should consider size, resolution, TV position, room size, room type, and price.
TV Size
When looking to purchase a TV, consider what screen size you want. Because a screen size is measured diagonally, the TV’s size isn’t precisely how much viewing space you’ll have.
If you want a TV that is 60 inches wide, a 60-inch TV certainly won’t give you that. A 60-inch TV will only give you a screen of about 53 by 31 inches. A 60-inch TV also has approximately 1500 square inches of screen area.
Different TV sizes are preferable for different amounts of people. The more people you entertain, the bigger your TV should be.

Resolution
Before purchasing a TV, consider what resolution you’d like. The higher the resolution, the higher the pixelation.
Because of this, you can sit close to the TV without it appearing grainy.
Most TVs are available in either 1080p or 4K. 1080p used to be the norm and is usually referred to as Full HD.
4K TVs are known as Ultra HD and have about four times the resolution of 1080p TVs. They have become much more popular in recent years. Nowadays, it will be easier to find a 60-inch TV in 4K than in 1080p.
Some TVs are even available in 8K, but they tend to be much more expensive than 4K TVs. Also, not much content exists in 8K. Until film, TV, and gaming content catches up, an 8K TV may not be worth the price.
TV Position
When looking to purchase a TV, consider where you plan to position it. TVs can be wall-mounted or rest on a TV stand. Each position offers viewers a different viewing experience.
If you have considerable floor space, a TV stand may be the position for you. However, the width of your TV is not going to be the width of your TV stand.
Your TV stand should be at least two inches wider than your TV.
A 60-inch TV is about 52-53 inches wide and should have a TV stand of a minimum 54-inch width. Of course, a larger TV stand can always accompany a smaller TV. However, a larger stand could dwarf a small TV if it is significantly wider than your television.
The height of your TV stand also plays a role in viewing quality. The middle of the TV should be at about eye level of the average viewer watching TV in your home.

To determine optimal TV stand height, measure from the floor to the eye level of a viewer in your home. Ensure the person is seated where most viewing happens, most likely a sofa or chair across from the TV.
Subtract half the TV’s height from this number. The height of your TV stand will fall within an inch or two of the resulting figure.
Make sure to account for the depth of the TV stand as well.
If you have a smaller living room, a TV stand may take up too much floor space.

Wall-Mounted Televisions
A wall-mounted TV can save you a lot of precious floor space. Mounting your TV on the wall will make it sit a few inches off the wall. However, this doesn’t jut into your space as much as a TV stand.
But, a wall mount can increase viewing distance by a foot or two. Because it is on the wall, it is further away than if placed on a TV stand. A mounted television also adds a slight viewing angle that does not usually accompany a TV stand.
How High Should You Mount a Television?
How high you should mount your TV varies based on the television’s size. If you have a 60-inch TV, mount it between 61 and 65 inches from the floor to the TV’s center.
You can do some math to determine the perfect height for your TV. You’ll need a graphic calculator to do this.
Take the “Tan” of your reclining angle, which is 10-20 degrees when laying back.
Multiply this by the viewing distance from the TV. Add this number to the viewer’s eye level to determine the perfect TV mounting height.

Most wall mounts feature a design that can fit any size television. However, some models won’t be able to hold up the weight of larger TVs. To make sure your television is stable, use a wall mount made specifically for your size TV.
Room Size
Your room size can determine what size of TV you should purchase. If the room is on the smaller side, a large TV will take up a lot of space. A large TV can easily overwhelm a small room. Conversely, a large room can easily swallow up a small TV.
It is also important to consider how much floor and wall space you have available. Do you have space for a 60-inch TV and stand or a wall mount? If not, are you comfortable rearranging your furniture to make room?

You really only need a 32-inch TV for these rooms. However, it would be best not to view these from more than about 4.9 feet away because viewing quality decreases.
Average and Large-Sized Rooms
For average-sized living rooms and larger bedrooms, a 32 to 40-inch TV will work just fine. You can view these TVs from 4.9 to 8 feet away, so there is more flexibility in placement.
These TVs are also more likely to offer extra or smart features than a 32-inch or smaller.
In a living room and a large master bedroom, 45 to 55 inches will provide an optimal viewing experience. With this television size, make sure to view from 8 to 10 feet away.
Larger rooms, like a sizable living room or an outdoor patio area, can house 60 to 85-inch TVs. You will just need to increase the distance from the TV as the TV gets larger.
Of course, you can place a larger TV in a smaller room if you can keep viewing distance optimal. This will help viewers not to strain their eyes.
Price
Price varies from TV to TV. The bigger the television, the more expensive it is going to be. A TV will also get more expensive with higher resolutions.
Brands also vary in price. You can expect additional features, like a smart or curved TV, to be more expensive as well.
TVs under 60 inches will likely cost several hundred dollars, though some are relatively cheap.
Some smaller TVs only cost $150. A 60-inch TV is more likely to cost between $400 and $500. 60-inch TVs with higher resolution will be on the more expensive end.
However, 60-inch TVs are becoming less and less popular than 55 and 65-inch TVs. It may be harder to find one than a 65-inch model of the same brand.
The Perfect Viewing Distance for a 60-Inch TV
If you decide to purchase a 60-inch TV, it is time to consider where to place it. As discussed above, you can either mount it on the wall or use a TV stand. Whichever you choose, there is an optimal distance to place your TV from the viewer.
To determine where to place your TV, take the diagonal measurement of your TV. Multiply that by 1.5. This gives you the minimum distance you should be sitting away from your TV.
For a 60-inch TV, that is 90 inches or 7.5 feet. However, the distance can act as a range.
If you have a 1080p TV, you’ll want to sit farther away, between 7.
5 and 12.5 feet. If you have a 4K TV, you can sit closer without the image appearing grainy. You can sit between 5 and 7.5 feet from a 4K TV.

How Large is a 60-inch TV?
From the get-go, a 60-inch TV lets you know how wide its screen is—60 inches (152.
4 centimeters). However, this measurement only refers to the length of the display from one corner to the opposite corner.
The 60-inch figure does nothing to inform customers of how much space on a wall it will take up. To do that, we will have to do some pretty simple calculations.
But first, do you know what the TV’s aspect ratio is?
Aspect Ratio
A screen’s aspect ratio refers to the ratio between its width and height. So, for instance, if a TV screen has a 4:3 aspect ratio, it will measure 4 inches horizontally for every 3 inches vertically.
The most common aspect ratios for TVs are:
- 4:3
- 16:9
- 21:9
Of the three aspect ratios listed above, the most widely used aspect ratio for modern TVs is 16:9, so we are going to use that in the following calculations.
Calculating Screen Size
The formulas used to calculate a TV’s height, width, and area are as follows:
- H = D ÷ √(AR2 + 1)
- W = AR × H
- A = W × H
So, to start, assuming we have a 60-inch TV screen with an aspect ratio of 16:9, we can calculate the height by inputting the variables into the Height formula.
- H = D ÷ √(AR2 +1)
- H = 60 ÷ √(16:9)2 +1)
- H = 60 ÷ √(3.16 + 1)
- H = 60 ÷ √4.16
- H = 60 ÷ 2.04
- H = 29.41 inches (74.70 centimeters)
After figuring out the 60-inch TV’s height, we can calculate the width by using the Width formula.
- W = AR × H
- W = 16:9 × 29.41
- W = 1.78 × 29.41
- W = 52.28 inches (132.79 centimeters)
Finally, we can multiply the width and height to get the total area.
- A = W × H
- A = 52.28 × 29.41
- A = 1,537.55 square inches (9,914.41 square centimeters)
So, in short, a 60-inch TV with a 16:9 aspect ratio will measure 52.28 × 29.41 inches (132.79 × 74.70 centimeters) and take up a total of 1,537.55 square inches (9,914.41 square centimeters) on a wall.
Just for fun, if the 60-inch TV had an aspect ratio of 4:3, it would measure 47.99 × 35.99 inches (121.89 × 91.94 inches) and have a total area of 1,727.16 square inches (11,206.
57 square centimeters).
As for a 60-inch TV with a 21:9 aspect ratio, it would measure 55.14 × 23.63 inches (140.06 × 60.02 centimeters) and take up 1,208.44 square inches (8,406.40 square centimeters) of space on a wall.
Ideal Viewing Distance For 60-inch TVs
Now that we have the measurements of a 60-inch TV screen, the next thing we can do is to determine how far away you should be seated from the TV.
Sony has a pretty simple guide to determine how far your sofa should be placed relative to your TV. In a nutshell, here’s what Sony says:
- For Ultra HD (4K and beyond) TVs, the viewer should be seated 1.5 times the distance of the TV’s height (44.12 inches or 112.06 centimeters for a 60-inch TV)
- For HD TVs, the viewer should be seated 3 times the distance of the TV’s height (88.23 inches or 224.10 centimeters for a 60-inch TV)
- For Standard Definition TVs, the viewer should be seated 6 times the distance of the TV’s height (176.

According to Very Well Health, the optimal viewing distance from a TV should be at 5 times the TV’s width. So, using the 60-inch TV example from earlier, your sofa should be placed at least 261.4 inches (663.96 centimeters) away from the TV set.
Additional Notes
Please note that there are several other factors that come into play when determining the ideal viewing distance.
The curvature of a TV screen, how much strain the screen causes on your eyes, and how high the TV is placed will all affect the “ideal” viewing distance.
60-inch TV Placement Height
How High Should You Mount a 60-inch TV Television?
As for the TV’s mounting height, the center of the screen would ideally be at the same level as your viewing height while seated. A standard sofa seat is around 18 inches, and in a seated position on a sofa, an average eye level for an adult is around 24 inches above the chair or sofa seat.
It means an average eye level while seated is at 42 inches (18 inches plus 24 inches.)
To determine the TV height from the floor, you can divide the 60-inch TV’s height (29.4 inches) by two. Then subtract it from 42; the final figure is the height of the TV’s bottom from the ground.
In this case, the average height from the ground for a 60-inch Tv to mount is 42″ – (29.4″ ÷ 2) = 27.3″ (69.34 cm)
Notice this is a suggested number for an average person. If you are taller or shorter than average, you can place the TV set shorter or taller or wherever you feel most comfortable viewing it.
What is the Best 60-inch Television Stand Height?
If you decide to use a TV stand instead of mounting the TV to the wall, the same guesstimate can be used.
Subtract half the height of the 60-inch TV (29.4″) from the average eye level (42 inches). Then subtract another 2 inches, which is the distance from the TV screen’s bottom to the TV legs.
The final figure is 42″ – (29.4″ ÷ 2) – 2″ = 25.3″ (64.26 cm), or 2 feet 1 1/4 inches, which is the height of the TV stand you should get.
Of course, you can get one or two inches longer or shorter than this.
Note: This assumes that you sit straight on your couch and the TV is at your eye level. If you tend to recline towards your sofa back, the mounting height will be bigger. The more you lay back towards the back of your couch or sofa, the higher the TV should be mounted.
What Size Room Do I Need For a 60-inch TV?
As a good rule of thumb, for a smaller size, you should get a small TV. If there is not enough space, consider mounting the TV to the wall.
In the case of a 60-inch TV, depending on the types of TVs (SD, HD, or 4K), the suggested viewing distance as discussed in the above section can vary from 44 to 176 inches (112 to 448 cm).
Specifically, with an HD TV, the suggested viewing distance is 7 feet 4 inches or 224.
10 centimeters, a suggested room width or length should be at least 8 to 10 feet.
With a 4K TV, the suggested viewing distance is 3 feet 8 1/8 inches or 112.06 centimeters, a suggested room width or length should be at least 5 feet.

Of course, the picture does not represent all sizes of the TV, as the image is too cluttered.
