Most of us would prefer to have a connection to the world at our fingertips every moment of every day in digital format. Sometimes, our smartphones are not enough, which is why the everyday use of tablets is increasing rapidly.

When our smartphones just are not enough, a small-sized tablet is.

Adding a Small Sized Tablet to Your Mobile Devices

This Samsung tablet is available at a low cost unlike many on the market in the category. At only $99, owning a new tablet has become easier than it has in the past. However, with such a low price, is it a quality tablet? Let’s find out!

Before we begin, make sure you’re ordering Samsung Galaxy from a legitimate retailer, NOT from a counterfeit seller. For your convenience, here is the Amazon link to an authentic Samsung Galaxy retailer.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A has a very attractive aesthetic. The back cover is made of monolithic non-removable plastic. You will not leave fingerprints or sweat on the back plastic panel because of the fine-textured lines. Most other 7-inch tablets are larger due to the Samsung 7-inch narrow bezels. While holding the product, it feels equally durable and comfortable.

Positioned on the front side of tablet making for easy access are basic function keys, such as back, recent, and home. I wasn’t crazy about the positioning of the power key, located on the upper-right hand side. I would have preferred if it was positioned lower, making it easier to reach.

Holding this tablet is easy to do with just one hand, and most of the time you can use one hand for operation, as well.

Tablet Display

Samsung Galaxy Tab A has an LCD display of 7 inches and 1280×800 pixels’ resolution. Most other tablets have a higher resolution, but I found the display quality to be very satisfactory. The offering includes a range of brightness display and gorgeous color options. You can adjust the screen brightness easily by swiping down on the top-front of the screen. Also, when outdoors you can change brightness instantly, which works well when reading or viewing photos while outside in the sun. While reading with this Samsung tablet, I used reading mode to display softer color.

Overall, I was impressed with the display, especially considering the low price. However, the text could have been crisper. But, viewing angles, saturation, color and contrast all were quite good.

Tablet Software

This tablet operates on Android Lollipop 5.1.1. Not the latest Android platform, and not much different than what Tab 4 or Tab E-Lite operates on. The only things noticeably different is the setting menu and app drawer. Also, unfortunately, screen mirror is not available making it unable to connect to a television. You’ll have to invest in a more expensive tablet is this feature is important to you.

Preloaded Google apps are the usual, with the Google Play Store included. There is also an app store included from Samsung which includes kids’ apps, customer service apps, utilities, and a few games. Also included is a CNN app, radio app which allows you to listen to local radio stations, customer assistance, and others. Added features include multi-window view and ultra-power saving mode. This is thanks to Samsung’s TouchWiz.

I am very pleased with the software on the Samsung Galaxy Tab A. I experienced no problems while watching HD videos or getting to games.

Tablet Functioning

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7-inch functions on Spreadtrum SC7731 chipset clocked 1.5 GHz quad-core processor. It has 1.5 GB RAM and 8 GB of onboard storage. However, the Android operating system uses over half of this storage space. The good news, however, there is a microSD card slot where you can add up to 200 GB of external storage.

I was delighted by the overall functioning capabilities of this tablet.

Tablet Camera

Located on the back, a 5-megapixel camera takes high-quality images with excellent resolution. The color is not as great as we wanted, but for a low-cost tablet, it was good. There are several modes to choose from, such as Auto, Panorama, Pro, Sound & Shot, Beauty Face, Continuous Shot, Sports, and Animated Gif. On the front, there is a 2-megapixel camera which allows you to capture attractive selfie images as well as video chats.

Final Verdict:

Sambsung Galaxy has a wonderful build and specs. I was very happy with the long battery life of 11 hours. I could go all day without needing a recharge. I experienced no any issues while watching videos, reading, or surfing the web. The display and the wide range of settings used for brightness were impressive.

The placement of the micro USB port was not ideal. I was difficult to use while having a cord placed in the top of the tablet rather than the side or bottom. Also, I was not happy with the storage size due to a large amount of space the operating system used. From an 8 GB of storage down to less than four was unimpressive. Only so many things can be placed onto an external storage card.

The price is decent at only $99, costing much less than the Tab 4. This is great for buyers on a tight budget who are not looking for high-end specs.

Samsung 7-inch tablets

Samsung is traditionally one of the leaders in the mobile technology segment. The company offers a huge selection of devices, including smartphones and tablets. As for tablets, our site has talked about them more than once. In this review, we will only touch on 7-inch tablets.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7.0 SM-T285 8Gb

We’ll start with one of the most popular models. This is a 7-inch device with a screen resolution of 1280 × 800 pixels (quite enough for such a small diagonal).

Processor – Spreadtrum SC8830, RAM – 1.5 GB, 8 GB main memory, support for memory cards. There are two cameras with a resolution of 5 MP and 2 MP (main and front, respectively). There is GLONASS, speaker and microphone, support for 3G and LTE.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7.0 SM-T280 8Gb

A similar device to the previous one, but there is a difference between them, and for someone very significant – Galaxy Tab A 7.0 SM-T280 does not have mobile Internet support at all. But it is also cheaper.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 Lite SM-T116 8Gb

Cheap model Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 Lite. With a screen diagonal of 7 inches, the latter has a resolution of 1024 × 600 pixels. This is not to say that this is not enough, but some users may notice graininess on the screen.

Processor – Marvell PXA986, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of main memory, there is a slot for a memory card. Interestingly, there is only one camera – the rear, the front is missing.

But there is GPS and GLONASS, as well as support for 3G networks – the tablet can be used to access the network using the mobile Internet.

Judging by the characteristics, almost a complete analogue of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 Lite SM-T116 8Gb. The difference probably lies in the processor model – it uses a 4-core Spreadtrum T-Shark with a processor frequency of 1.3 GHz. Another small difference is in the case design.

Samsung Series 7 Slate PC 9 tablet review0001

The skepticism about Windows tablets was well deserved, as long as they used economical but too slow Intel Atom processors, and had to work with an interface that was not designed for touch control. It seemed that everything could change for the better in this class except with the release of the ARM version of the OS from Microsoft, but as Samsung has proven in practice, an excellent Windows tablet can be made today. To do this, it was necessary “just” to take a more powerful platform (an economical branch of Intel Sandy Bridge used in trendy ultrabooks), take care of additional methods of touch control by adding a Wacom digitizer to the usual capacitive sensor and, finally, provide really easy-to-use accessories. As a result, Samsung Series 7 Slate PC is good literally on all counts, except for one, but perhaps the most important – the cost.

-inch display . At the same time, a high-quality PLS-matrix is used with excellent viewing angles compared to TN-models and a pleasant color gamut.

The screen brightness can be adjusted manually from 5 to 270 cd/m2, or automatically using the light sensor. Touch capabilities of the screen are provided by a capacitive layer with support for 10 simultaneous touches and an EMR digitizer from Wacom, and its surface is protected by tempered Gorilla Glass.

The front panel is traditionally minimalistic – on the top of the matrix edging you can find a 2 megapixel webcam, on the right – a light sensor, and finally, the Home button with characteristic windows is located below. The plastic back panel with a pronounced vertical texture is mostly flat and only has small roundings closer to the edges.

In the center is a glossy company logo, in the upper left corner is the main 3 MP camera. Here you can also find service information, four perforation zones of the active cooling system and a hole for a forced reboot.

The sidewalls of the tablet are flat, and due to the glossy joint with the front panel and the rounding of the back, they are noticeably thinner than the thickness of the entire body. The glossy insert encircling all the sidewalls grows into a purely designer rounding in the hand hold zone. On the top side, you can find a MicroSD card reader and a pair of microphones, on the bottom, there is a branded connector for a docking station, holes for a pair of latches, and a pair of speakers.

The right side contains the power / lock button with a bright blue indicator, the lock key for automatically changing the display orientation and an optional slot for a SIM card. The left one contains a full-sized USB, a combined audio port, a volume rocker, a Micro-HDMI port, and a socket for a conventional “laptop” power supply.

The Samsung Series 7 Slate PC is based on the economical Intel Core i5-2467M processor with HD Graphics 3000 and comes with 4 GB of RAM. Storage is a 64GB or 128GB SSD and a 40Wh non-removable battery.

In this configuration, the tablet scored 2300 in PCMark7, over 6000 in PCMark Vantage and 1600 in 3DMark06. Battery life was two and a half hours in maximum load mode and five and a half hours in reading mode.

As a result, the dimensions of the Samsung Series 7 Slate PC are comparable to the average 11.6-inch laptop – it has the same height, but is slightly wider due to the increased palm grip area. But comparing the weight of both types of devices is clearly on the side of the tablet, which weighs less than 900 grams, against almost 1.4 kg of a laptop. During operation, there were no particular complaints about the tablet: the cooling system works fine, the case is quite rigid, the controls are at hand, the only thing I would like to advise is to immediately block the position sensor, because the redrawing of the Windows interface from portrait to landscape is too slow.

Docking station, keyboard, stylus

Using the above accessories Samsung Series 7 Slate PC transforms from a niche Windows tablet to a full-fledged work tool. In the Ukrainian configuration, an aluminum Bluetooth keyboard, a Wacom stylus and a docking station are included in the box, which is not surprising given the price.

Let’s start with the docking station. The top and sides of this miniature stand are made of metal, while the bottom is fully finished with rubber to prevent slipping on the table. On the front side, you can find the company logo, and all available connectors are expectedly moved back – these are RJ45 network, full-size HDMI and USB, as well as an audio output and a charger socket.

To use the docking station, just fold down a small stop and place the tablet in the recess, finished with soft material. The success of the operation will be signaled by the blue LED, which will light up even if the charger is not connected to the docking station.

Let’s move on to the Bluetooth keyboard, which is logical to use in tandem with the docking station. The working surface of the keyboard is made of aluminum, the island-type keys are plastic.

There are two LEDs at the top to signal connection activity and CapsLock mode. We came across a non-localized sample, but even with this option, we can understand that there are no complaints about the layout. Please note that the “laptop” version with the Fn modifier is used, which means that you can quickly adjust the sound level or screen brightness without touching the screen.

The bottom of the keyboard is made of smooth plastic. The role of anti-slip stops is performed by a rubber pad at the bottom and a protruding compartment for components and two AAA batteries, at the end of which there is a power button. The keyboard has an ergonomic tilt towards the user, an enviable rigidity and weighs less than 300 grams. Thus, in order to finally turn the Samsung Series 7 Slate PC into a laptop, all you have to do is connect a mouse.

But the complete stylus is designed primarily for those cases when the tablet is in your hands. Using Wacom’s inductive digitizer allows you to use a lightweight, battery-free passive stylus that still handles left and right clicks without any problems.

The first is obtained by simply touching the screen, for the second you need to press a small button on the stylus body and finally, to use the “eraser” when handwriting, you need to turn the stylus cap forward. As a result, the stylus and Home button on the tablet is enough for most situations.

Note that a single click on this button brings up the Touch Launcher, a double click is similar to the Win + Tab shortcut, and a long press switches you to the Windows desktop.

Video review of the Samsung Series 7 Slate PC tablet

Results supported by keyboard and dock, which turn it almost into a laptop.

Windows 7 still handles touch controls, but Wacom’s proprietary Touch Launcher skin and comfortable stylus greatly improve the system’s basic ergonomics. Yes, and Windows 8 with the notorious Metro interface is not so long to wait, so at the moment Samsung Series 7 Slate PC is really successful and promising, though not the cheapest product.
