Antennas wireless: Network Antennas, WiFi & Directional Antenna

External WiFi Antennas | Outdoor Wireless Antennas

One of the most important installation tips you can remember when trying to extend the range of your 802.11 WiFi network is to choose the correct type of external WiFi antenna.  Although going with the highest gain will get you the farthest distance, it will also cause the most interference, and sometimes dead-spots under the antenna.  Choosing between a Directional or Omni-directional radiation pattern would be the first step in successfully extending the range of your WiFi Network. Getting a bigger antenna doesn’t necessary mean your WiFi will go further…but getting the correct outdoor WiFi antenna will!

WiFi antenna and outdoor wireless antenna products from GNS Wireless are available in 700 MHz to 6 GHz frequencies to address many wireless LAN applications.  These high performance, high power WiFi antennas include a wide selection of Yagi antenna, Omni directional antenna, indoor antenna, and outdoor wireless antenna styles.   Other 2.4GHz WiFi antenna types include 2.4GHz patch antenna, panel antenna, MIMO antenna, 802.11N antenna, 802.11AC antenna, high-gain antenna, DAS antenna and rubber duck antenna styles.  GNS Wireless offers expert guidance in choosing the right external WiFi antenna for your specific application.

D-Link

Question: Connecting an antenna to a D-Link wireless access point

Answer:

In some cases, when establishing a wireless connection, it becomes necessary to replace the access point antennas included in the package with other antennas. For example, if an antenna with a high gain or with a different radiation directivity is required to solve a problem. When a replacement suitable in terms of parameters is found, then, as a rule, questions arise: is this antenna compatible with the existing access point, do you need adapters to connect it. This quick guide will help you select the accessories you may need when installing your D-Link wireless equipment.

To begin with, let’s look at what types of antenna connectors and connectors D-Link equipment can be equipped with. DIR series routers mostly have non-removable or internal antennas. All indoor access points (DAP-1xxx, DAP-2xxx) are equipped with RP-SMA antenna connectors. The same applies to DSR routers and wireless adapters with detachable antennas, such as DWA-126, DWA-525 or DWA-548.

RP-SMA connector

Some of the antennas (mostly internal) are equipped with an RP-SMA connector, such as models ANT24-0230, ANT24-0502, ANT24-0802C. The second type of connector found on D-Link antennas is the N-type (STD-N Jack). But bundled with such antennas there is usually an adapter for RP-SMA. Thus, for any internal devices, there is no need to buy additional adapters – the antenna is either connected directly to the device, or the required adapter comes with it.

N type and RP-N type connectors

External D-Link access points mainly have RP-N Jack (Reverse Polarity N) antenna connectors. To connect external antennas to them, adapter cables with RP-N Plug and N Plug connectors are required. These are cables marked ANT24-ODU, which are available in lengths of 30 cm, 1 m or 3 m (ANT24-ODU03M, ANT24-ODU1M, ANT24-ODU3M respectively). They are suitable for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. They can also be used for external use.

Cable ANT24-ODU3M

If the antenna needs to be located at some distance from the access point, then you can use antenna extensions with N Plug + N Jack connectors. They are marked ANT24-CB and available in lengths of 3m, 6m or 9m (ANT24-CB03N, ANT24-CB06N and ANT24-CB09N respectively). Keep in mind that the longer the cable, the more signal attenuation it introduces. Therefore, you should not choose a long cable “in reserve”.

Cable ANT24-CB03N

There are also ANT70-CB1N and ANT70-CB1RN cables that are 1 meter long. They have an IP67 dust and water resistance rating and can therefore be used in harsh outdoor environments. ANT70-CB1N is equipped with two N plug connectors, and ANT70-CB1RN is equipped with RP-N plug and N plug connectors. The cables are characterized by low signal attenuation and can operate in two frequency bands – 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

ANT70-CB1N and ANT70-CB1RN cables

The ANT70-SP lightning protection module is compatible with any D-Link outdoor antenna. It will be required to prevent harmful effects from lightning and other electrostatic voltage that can damage the access point. The lightning protection module must be grounded, or the mast on which it is installed must be grounded.

Lightning protection module ANT70-SP

Example 1. A wireless network has been built inside an office building based on DAP-2360 access points. It is required to provide Wi-Fi coverage also in the courtyard of the office complex. To solve this problem, it is necessary to connect external antennas to one of the points, which will be placed outside. For this, two ANT24-1202 antennas with a circular radiation pattern (DN) were selected. The delivery set of each antenna includes an adapter cable from the N-type connector to RP-SMA, 50 cm long. Since the DAP-2360 point is not intended for outdoor use, this cable length may not be enough to take the antennas outside. Therefore, an ANT24-CB antenna extension will be added to each antenna.

Example 2. On the DAP-3690 access point, it is necessary to replace the “native” antennas with a circular DN with a sector antenna in order to organize a wireless bridge over a longer distance.
