Audio system for home theater: Best Home Theater Systems of 2023

Klipsch Reference Theater Pack review: Teeny tiny speakers will blow your house down

Any number of
sound bar
systems can significantly improve your TV’s audio, but if you really want to take advantage of rear-channel surround sound effects, your best bet is still a separate AV receiver and 5.1 speaker system. Even though that means a room full of speakers, they don’t have to be huge to create impressive sound.

The $999 Klipsch Reference Theater Pack is a perfect example. Each of its four satellite speakers is tiny, yet together they can fill a small or medium-sized room with a surround sound field that no sound bar or stereo system can match. Especially since Klipsch includes a hefty wireless subwoofer.

At a grand, though, the Klipsch is a little expensive for what it does. It’s also sonically eclipsed by larger systems, so it’s really best for people who demand the smallest of satellites. If that’s you, the well-matched Klipsch is worth a listen.

The Klipsch Reference Theater Pack is available for $999, with Australian and UK pricing and availability to be confirmed. Expect somewhere in the realm of £999 and AU$2,200, though.

The Klipsch look

Sarah Tew/CNET

While competitors are falling over themselves to produce Atmos-compatible surround sets, Klipsch is keeping it simple with a 5.1-only setup. The Pack appears to be an update on the older HD 500 with some important tweaks.

The system consists of four identical satellites which feature those iconic, brassy IMG drivers in a 3.5-inch size combined with a 0.75-inch horn-loaded tweeter. The black, plastic cabinets are small, just 7.75 inches high, 4.5 inches wide and 5.5 inches deep. Like the more expensive Focal satellites we saw recently, the Klipsch features a set of spring clips, so don’t expect to use 12 gauge or thicker wire unless you install pin plugs on the ends.

The satellites are paired with a center channel which loads a second 3.5-inch driver into a larger cabinet. Lastly, the package includes an 8-inch wireless sub set in a box roughly a foot square. The kit comes with a wireless transceiver for the subwoofer which you connect to the power and the LFE channel on your
AV receiver
.

The wireless Klipsch subwoofer features an 8-inch driver.

Setup

The Klipsch Reference Theater Pack satellites are really tiny, so the speakers don’t make much bass — they’re 3 decibels down at 110 Hertz, if you’re keeping track. That means it’s crucial your AV receiver’s bass management/subwoofer adjustments are correctly set to at least 100 Hz for all the speakers. What’s more, the speakers’ sound is fairly directional, so we recommend aiming each of the five speakers toward the main listening position for best sound quality.

We used a Sony STR-DN1080 AV receiver and an Oppo UDP 205 Blu-ray player for all of our listening tests. Even with the sub just a few feet from our listening position we had no trouble achieving a smooth blend between the sub and the sats.

The Klipsch Reference Theater Pack includes grilles for a more discrete look.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Performance

We were pleased by the way the five satellites together created a coherent, room-filling sound. Considering the sats’ ultra compact size, dynamic range was also impressive, even when we pushed the volume fairly loud with the battle scenes in “The Revenant.” Clarity was also solid, and dialogue intelligibility in the midst of combat never sagged.

When the frontiersmen made their way over a waterfall, the sub delivered the thunderous roar of the moving water without sounding like it was working very hard. The hushed quiet of the forest scenes, with buzzing insects and birds, had excellent resolution of fine detail. With the room lights turned down the Theater Pack sats disappeared as sound sources.

Then we brought out the $1,300 Focal Sib Evo system for a round of comparisons. The Sib sats may not be very big, but they are considerably larger than the wee Klipsch sats, and the difference was audible. The Sibs sound was fleshed out a little more, they sounded more “alive”, and when we returned to the Klipsch the sound flattened out. The Sib Evo’s sats sound is less directional, so as we moved around the room, the sound balance was more consistent with the Sib Evo system.

We preferred the Sib Evo sound, but buyers looking for the smallest possible, but high-quality satellite speakers, should consider the Performance Pack.

We next played Kraftwerk’s “3-D” Blu-ray, and the Klipsch delivered the band’s trademark synth-pop with surprising gusto. Basslines bounced, the synth textures and steep transients belied the sats size. We played the music loud and heard no strain or increasing distortion, this little system’s sound can loom large. This Blu-ray’s surround mix is one of the best we’ve heard from a music program in a long time, and the Klipsch Performance Pack only made us appreciate it more.

Should you buy it?

Don’t for a second underestimate the pint-size Klipsch Reference Theater Pack’s capabilities; this system can deliver a heavy punch in a small room. Still, if you have a large room or crave chest thumping bass, you need to step up to a larger system. For less money, a combination of the ELAC Debut B5 ($230/pair), Debut C5 ($180), Debut B4 ($130/pair) speakers, and a Hsu Research VTF-1 Mk3 subwoofer ($399), and that system would soundly trounce the Klipsch Reference Theater Pack.

Of course, the big difference is that the Klipsch speakers virtually disappear into a room when you put those grilles on, and the bigger Elacs don’t. If you’re looking for a full surround system that’s even more compact than the Evo, the Klipsch is definitely worth a listen.

Home Theater and Home Theater Systems at Crutchfield.com

HDTVs produce stunning pictures, with lifelike color and detail, but they don’t offer big, realistic sound for your movies and shows. To make the most of your entertainment, combine a great picture with full, engaging home theater sound. You’ve got plenty of options for getting great sound, from multi-speaker home theater systems to simple one-speaker solutions.

Component home theater systems

A traditional component home theater system, also known as a surround sound system, consists of a TV, video sources, a home theater receiver, and speakers. For the best home theater experience, this is what we recommend.

TVs

Home theater starts with your TV. A big, clear picture is must-have, and bigger is usually better. Choose 4K or OLED
for the latest TV picture technology, and pay attention to smart TV features if you’re interested in streaming content. If you’ve got a dedicated home theater room and you really want to go big, consider a projector that can produce theater-like images on screens measuring as big as 100″ or more.

Video sources

Blu-ray players, 4K media players, and smart set-top boxes — these are all examples of video sources that will provide the audio/video content you’ll play on your home theater system. These devices provide a wide variety of entertainment options — many connect to the Internet so you’ll be able to stream content like Netflix®.

Receivers

A receiver is the center of your home theater system. In addition to providing surround sound processing and the power to drive your speakers, today’s home theater receivers act as a connection hub for all of your of audio/video sources and your TV.
Many of our current receiver models let you control your system wirelessly using a mobile app and some let you stream music from the Internet.

Speakers

Speakers connect to your receiver to produce the sound you’ll hear. A traditional surround sound system consists of at least five speakers plus a powered subwoofer. You have plenty of options when it comes to speakers, from floor-standing towers to in-ceiling models to complete surround sound speaker packages.

Pre-packaged home theater systems

We carry systems that are already matched together and ready for you to purchase — some combine a receiver and speakers, while others contain speakers and you’ll select a separate receiver.

Powered home theater systems

Also called “home theater in a box,” these systems include a matched receiver and speakers and sometimes also a built-in Blu-ray disc player. All you have to add is a TV or projector.

Dolby Atmos

®

Dolby Atmos is a cutting-edge surround sound format that was developed to give movie soundtracks a more three-dimensional effect. It creates a “height” layer of sound above the listener. Available for a growing list of movie titles and supported by many newer home theater receivers, Dolby Atmos delivers the most lifelike surround sound we’ve heard yet.

Wireless surround speakers

People frequently ask us about wireless surround speakers. No home theater speaker is truly wireless, because it will need to get power from somewhere. However, some home theater systems feature a wireless transmitter that sends audio signals from the receiver to the speakers in the rear of your room. This eliminates the need to run speaker wire from the front to the back of your room. These speakers usually connect to a wireless receiver that goes in the back of your room and plugs into an AC wall outlet for power.

Sound bars

Sound bars are simple to set up, and they’re great when you don’t have a lot of room for speakers. Many consist of one long, slim speaker that sits beneath your TV plus a subwoofer to provide low-frequency punch. You get much better sound than your TV’s built-in speakers can offer.

Article, Home theater: acoustics, how to choose, types, types

When choosing acoustics for your home, it is important to decide what functions the system you are purchasing will have. The demands of modern people vary, and if a clear sound is important for sophisticated music lovers, then for an ordinary housewife rattling pots and pans, volume will be the key parameter. At the same time, it is worth soberly assessing the parameters of the room, because “squeezing” concert equipment into the closet is not entirely reasonable. It is also important to pay attention to the brand under whose auspices the speaker system is made. And believe me, there are plenty to choose from. But even despite this, BBK acoustics are in special demand among music lovers, housewives and lovers of good sound!

Number of acoustic bands

Home acoustics can be either one or five-band. Having no special requirements for sound or being the proud owner of an ear that was stepped on by a bear, you can be content with one band, where all the music will be played by one speaker. The best option would be two-way systems, in which the left speaker is responsible for the bottoms and middle, and the right speaker for high frequencies. Three-way systems will be a treat for the ears of more demanding audiophiles, because all frequencies are reproduced through separate speakers!

Power is not volume!

Among buyers looking for acoustics for home use, there is a myth that equalizes the power and loudness of audio systems. In reality, everything is completely different: a loud sound will certainly wake up the neighbors, but will not become an indicator of power. The strength and power of acoustics lies in its mechanical reliability. Also, you should choose a system based on the characteristics of the speakers themselves: the power of the amplifier should not exceed that in the speakers. Otherwise, as the well-known proverb says, “the music didn’t play for long…”

System frequency range and sensitivity

The actual volume level of a system is its sensitivity, measured in decibels. The higher this indicator, the stronger the sound from the speakers will put pressure on the environment. In other words, the higher it is, the louder the sound, hence the more powerful. For the ears of an ordinary music lover, 85 dB is a pretty good indicator.

An equally important parameter when choosing home acoustics is the frequency. Human hearing allows you to hear sound in the range from 20 to 20,000 hertz. Sounds up to 150 can be classified as low, sounds at 100 – 7,000 are medium, while sounds ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 Hz are considered high. In the case of purchasing acoustics as an addition, 100-20,000 Hertz is enough. The most sophisticated music lover should opt for systems with a frequency of 20-35,000 Hertz.

Standard passive or professional active?

A distinctive feature of the active system is the fact that each speaker has its own amplifier. At the same time, filters are installed at the input, and their activity creates a lot of advantages: they boast a wide variability and the ability to fine-tune. The presence of amplifiers provides improved playback quality. Active systems are able to work in an extended frequency range, and also have a volume control on each speaker, which in itself is an undeniable operational advantage. In turn, passive systems are simple: it is not necessary to supply a signal and voltage to each speaker, because. it is already provided by the manufacturer. The most important disadvantage of such systems can be considered the need for an external amplifier.

Cabinet types

Among all the options on the market today, closed and bass-reflex systems are in particular demand. Closed-type cases are the easiest to manufacture, and the flight of thought of modern designers allows you to implement the most daring ideas! But it is important to remember that in a closed box, vibrations are felt most strongly, which ultimately has a rather unpleasant effect when reproducing low frequencies. That is why the cases of really serious installations are made according to the phase inverter type.

PVC, chipboard or wood?

Each of the presented materials has a number of advantages: plastic, due to its pliability, provides a stylish design and excellent ergonomics, but greatly distorts the sound when the volume is increased (perceptible speaker bounce is familiar to every owner of plastic speakers). Due to this fact, such acoustics are ideal for sounding computers, while for home use it is more preferable to buy speakers in a wooden case. But if you buy PVC speakers, it is important to remember that the irregular shape, the lack of wide panels, and the lack of ventilation surfaces are signs of a really high-quality product!

All at once or in parts?

Almost all home acoustics on the market come complete. But often, serious brands also sell individual parts of the systems. Often, the finished kit includes a center unit, side speakers and a subwoofer. You can also buy side speakers, rear speakers and additional speakers to create the effect of full presence.

When choosing a standard set, it is important to consider the number of speakers: front and rear come in pairs, and the subwoofer and center must be equipped with their own speakers. When self-assembling acoustics, in addition to the DC system, it is worth turning on the rear channel, which provides the effect of complete immersion.

In addition, according to the type of mounting to the surface, speakers and subwoofers are divided into ceiling and floor. This information is important for those who want to assemble their system in parts: floor-standing speakers are characterized by increased power and sound volume, while ceiling-mounted options will help save space, which is especially important for residents of cramped apartments in big cities.

Home speakers included in the home theater system, includes:

  • Front speakers

Speakers mounted on the sides of the listener do most of the work when playing material. The class of the front speakers allows you to evaluate the class of the entire system. Not surprisingly, their choice has to be given special attention. It is important to bear in mind that for full operation, all systems (front, rear and center channel with a subwoofer) must work in absolute harmony, so buying speakers from different brands is not recommended.

Front loudspeakers provide maximum efficiency in reproducing mid and high frequencies. The subwoofer is responsible for low-frequency effects. In other words, the deeper the soundtrack of the movie at low frequencies, the lower the quality of sound reproduction on the front speakers.

  • Central channel

The center channel speaker system is used to play human speech (without dubbing). In addition, the center channel works with music and separate sound effects (Wide), partially taking over the functions of the front speakers. In a perfectly matched configuration, the CC, left and right speakers should be identical.

Lined up with the TV. The most optimal installation location is a niche under the screen. Also, small acoustics can also play the role of the central speaker, and low-frequency compensation is transferred to the front speakers (in Normal mode). With the Plantom mode turned on, it simulates the presence of a center speaker for the listener, staying exactly in the center of the entire system.

Magnetic shielding of the center channel speakers will eliminate screen distortion. Also, in the technology of high-quality speakers, measures have been taken to protect against third-party noise fluctuations that can spoil the viewing experience.

  • Surround speakers

Rear speaker for surround sound. Often, there are no special requirements for such speakers, so any speakers suitable for installation at a height above the viewer’s ear can be used as rear acoustics. Matching the sound of the rear and front speakers is recommended, but since minor differences are tolerated, this can be skipped. However, simplicity does not mean that the purchase can be approached “slipshod”. Five-channel formats (DTS, Dolby Digital) work in several ranges at once, so improperly selected rears will not allow you to feel the full effect!

Rear acoustics are divided into directional and dipole. Directional is used in modern DTS and Dolby extensions, as well as when playing multi-channel music in DVD-audio format. They are especially effective when playing tracks in studio quality. When properly placed, directional speakers can create an immersive experience by bringing sound effects to the rear of the viewer.

Dipole rear speakers emit different phase vibrations from two speakers at once and are used for Surround and Pro Logic from Dolby. The rear horns provide a slightly blurry background sound, and their location is not significant.

It is preferable to buy rear speakers complete with the rest of the system components. Otherwise, rear speakers for a front pair or triple are recommended to be selected based on the brand or similar characteristics of the speakers.

  • Subwoofer

Used as a standalone component responsible for producing “deep” sound effects. It plays an important role in the organization of high-quality sound, especially in home theaters, adding additional expression, dynamics and drama to the already driving sound. Also, the subwoofer prevents loudspeaker overload by reducing the intensity of distortion. This type of speaker system can be divided into subwoofers that require connection to an amplifier (passive), as well as completely independent from an external source (active) subwoofers.

The subwoofer enclosure can be made in a bass-reflex, closed or narrow-band version, protecting the “stuffing” from excessive vibrations. Often, its dimensions are quite large, and the design can spoil the whole impression of the interior. But given that a person with his hearing is unlikely to catch the exact movement of low sound, you can get by with one subwoofer, which can be located almost anywhere.

5.1 systems suitable for home use: 5 speakers and 1 subwoofer. It should be noted that systems 6.1-9 are currently on the market..1. For example, 6.1 is an expanded version of the traditional system, supplemented by a rear center channel, 7.1 adds two side speakers. At the moment, due to the rarity of films with 7.1 sound in our country, 5.1 format is in high demand.
