Kryktytau Ridge | Russian Geographical Society

How long have you seen Babai, Baba, Elephant, Cucumber in one place at once, a little to the side – Devil’s finger, and above all this from above – also … full Khandyk? How long ago? Then you are here, on the mountain range with the predatory bubbling name Kryktytau, which stretches for 60 kilometers along the Bolshoy Kizil River in the Beloretsky and Abzelilovsky districts of Bashkiria.

Kryktytau is a whole chain of aggressively stony hills interconnected, forming as a result this “abusive”, like, name of the ridge.

In fact, according to one of the versions, taken as the main one, the name can be translated as the Chopped Mountain. The legend says that the hero of the Bashkir epic Ural-batyr cut down the mountains here to the right and left, freeing the rivers captivated by them. One of these liberated beauties was the Kizil River.

According to another interpretation, the name comes from a word translated into modern Russian as the number “forty”, which by Bashkir standards was equivalent to the concept of “a lot”. Say, there are a lot of them here, all kinds of mountain formations that interest you, connected into a single ridge.

(There are other versions, but you will hear them upon arrival)

Due to the strong dissection on the ridge, it is really very difficult to navigate. A little mistake – and you already got into a parallel gorge, which then suddenly turned 90 °, and you ended up almost on the opposite side of the ridge. So the “beautifully” passed traverse of Kryktov is a lot of positive emotions. However, as well as the “ugly”, but still victorious traverse. After all, turning “in the wrong place” and going “in the wrong direction”, but then realizing the mistake and managing to regain the lost positions, sometimes overcoming deep logs and ravines with several elevation changes, each, let’s say, up to 100 m, you must admit, it’s also cool …

And there is room to climb here. The highest height of the ridge is 1118 meters (mountain Karatash) Two more “thousanders” are mountains Shershiltau (1108 meters) and Kusimova (1080 meters).

If you happen to visit these places, by all means imagine that you are walking not just on rocky ground, but right on … the vents of powerful volcanoes that once erupted: the soil is entirely formed from volcanic rocks – tuffs, porphyrites and tuff breccias.

The slopes on the southern and eastern side are represented by forb-feather grass steppe, cut by deep gorge-like valleys. The slopes on the northern and western sides are covered with birch groves, and closer to the peaks, deciduous forests grow with an admixture of pine and birch. The valleys are overgrown with birch forests, often swampy. The sloping slopes of the ridge are occupied by meadows with small areas of deciduous forests. There are a lot of strawberries in the glades, strawberries and stone berries in the forest. After the summer rains, the forest abounds with mushrooms – mushrooms, boletus, russula, mushrooms and others. There are moose, roe deer, capercaillie, partridges, black grouse, wild boars, bears, wolves, foxes, squirrels…

In the eastern part of the ridge flows the river Vodopadny, which formed the gorge of the same name with a length of about 3 kilometers. Flowing through a rocky gorge, the stream forms a cascade of waterfalls, the largest of which reaches 3 meters.

On the slopes of the ridge there are several republican natural monuments: the Ultyk-Karagas tract; Mount Karatash; the Khuuskan tract, a section of the ridge with the peaks of Babai, Kushai and, as we already intrigued at the beginning, to all Khandyks – Khandyk.

The most remarkable place in Kryktytau is the Yelgi Kuruzyak gorge, better known as the “Mountain Gorge”. Its slopes with the rocks of Baba, Cucumber, Elephant, Devil’s Finger and others (again, see the beginning) are very popular with climbers, mountain tourists, cavers and rock climbers of all stripes, genders and varieties. (Sorry for the classification)

You can get to the ridge from Magnitogorsk by bus and fixed-route taxis to the villages of Askarovo, Burangulovo, Kuzhanovo, Novoabzakovo, Lake Bannoe, and the children’s camp “Mountain Gorge”.

Also from Beloretsk or Magnitogorsk – by train to the stations Novoabzakovo – Minutka, Murakaevo, Gorny Vozdukh.

You should get by car to Mukhametovo village or Salavat farm. It is possible to drive by car along any dirt road to the very foot of the ridge.

Markoth Range

Mountains at all times attracted and continue to attract tourists, scientists, researchers. Mountain peaks give unforgettable sensations of delight and freedom to those who reached their peaks.

The mountain range encircling Novorossiysk, Kabardinka and Gelendzhik with a gray-green necklace is called the Markotkh Range. Translated from the Adyghe language, “Markotkh” means blackberry or berry mountain. Indeed, not only blackberries grow on the slopes of Markotkh, but blackthorn, hawthorn, wild rose and other wild fruit bushes grow.

The vegetation cover of the slope facing the sea is unusually variegated, diverse, characterized by a combination of a large number of rapidly alternating plant communities and a high degree of saturation with representatives of typical Mediterranean flora. On the peaks of the Markotkhsky ridge, ancient upland-steppe relict communities have been preserved – practically the only ones in the Kuban.

Kuban is considered to be a steppe zone. And, of course, the steppe is not a steppe without feather grass. This plant is familiar to many for its unusual and at the same time simple appearance. Few people know that all three types of feather grass, as rare representatives of the flora of our country, are listed in the Red Book. And one of the types of feather grass – Syreyshchikov’s feather grass – grows only on the southern slopes from Novorossiysk to Gelendzhik. In total, 45 species of plants listed in the Red Book of Russia grow on the territory of the Gelendzhik resort, 39- are found on the southern slope of the Markoth Range.

Junipers are classified as especially valuable relic plants. No other species in the Caucasus can compare with junipers in terms of drought tolerance and unpretentiousness. Their environment-forming, water-protective, soil-protective and sanitary-hygienic significance is great. Researcher Boris Petrovich Tokin believes that one hectare of juniper forests releases 30 kg of phytoncides (volatile substances with bactericidal properties) per day. This amount is enough to purify the air of a medium-sized industrial city.

In the community with junipers, many Red Book plants grow – pistachio pistachio, Etruscan honeysuckle, thread-leaved speedwell, summer white flower, low almond (bean), purple orchid and others. Of the rarest representatives of the domestic flora, Gelendzhik and Markotkh thyme are found on Markoth. It is popularly known as thyme or Bogorodskaya grass. The species name itself testifies to their uniqueness and limited habitat. Such plants are narrowly endemic (Endemic are species of animals and plants that are found in a limited area and cannot be found anywhere else). Due to overharvesting for medicinal purposes, death due to fires, these plant species have now become very rare. Endemics also include such herbal plants as flax euxinus, multi-leaved osma, Komarov’s bell, astragalus arnakantovidny and other rare plants.

The green color, which persists even in the autumn-winter period, is given to the mountain slopes by artificial pine plantations. They were carried out in the 60-70s as part of a program to create a “green necklace” around the resort. The work was carried out by the Gelendzhik Mekhleskhoz with special equipment, using the method of terracing mountain slopes. Planting material was seedlings of Pitsunda pine and Crimean pine. The experiment on artificial landscaping of mountain slopes attracted the attention of scientists and specialists from different countries. Dozens of foreign foresters came to Gelendzhik to get acquainted with the experience of mountain plantations, which received a high world appraisal.

The slopes of Markoth are especially beautiful and attractive in the first spring months, when they are decorated with a colorful carpet of primroses: peonies, tulips, strings, wild orchids. Hundreds of nature lovers flock to the mountains. And few of them deny themselves the pleasure of picking a flower they like. And how many are destroyed every year?

The animal world is also very diverse. Wild fruits, nuts, acorns, mushrooms, various berries and seeds of plants – all this allows many species of animals to live comfortably. Of the large predators, the jackal, wolf, fox, and Caucasian cat are common. The Caucasian cat is listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation. He leads a solitary lifestyle, and the representatives of this species of animals are so small that a very strict record of the number of individuals is kept. The raccoon dog, imported from the Primorye Territory, and the raccoon raccoon from North America have taken root well. You can also meet small herds of wild boars, European roe deer, hedgehogs, shrews, polecats, moles, bats.

Of the reptiles, the river turtle, the common or yellow-bellied snake, the patterned snake, common and water snakes, the legless yellow-bellied lizard, and the agile lizard live. The Mediterranean tortoise, the Aesculapian snake and the poisonous Caucasian viper are listed in the Red Book of Russia.

In the forests and meadows there are many birds that greet the sunrise with singing and chirping. Jay, turtle dove, oriole, wild pigeon, eagle, sparrow hawk, falcon, woodpecker, shrike, hoopoe, kestrel, bittern, owl, nightingale, quail, cuckoo, goldfinch, eagle owl and others live on the slopes of the Markotkh Range.
