Sixteen-year-old schoolboy Mukhammed Zakharin was found dead at home with headphones connected to a smartphone in his ears. Known details of the Mohammed incident

The autopsy confirmed the preliminary version of the electrical injury.

According to media reports, the deceased’s brother noted that the charger “shocked him”. A distinct trace of electrical breakdown is visible on the headphone case.
The phone model, headphones and charger manufacturers are not included in the reports.

Brazilian Incident

This is the second accident of this type known to me this year. An identical incident occurred in the municipality of Riacho Frio (Brazil), where 17-year-old Luisa Pinheiro also received an electric shock through her headphones from a charging phone. The case also ended in death from electrical injury.

Doctors who examined the girl’s body noted that the ear pads of the headphones had melted in her ears. There were also reports that the phone was almost destroyed by electric current and looked like it had been blown up. At the same time, it was reported that on this day there were heavy rains with thunderstorms in the region. The exact causes of the accident at the time of active media interest in the incident were not named. It is known that the investigation considered two options: a malfunction of the charger and a lightning strike.

How can a gadget with headphones kill?

So, from the point of view of physics and design features of smartphones and chargers, nothing is impossible in these situations. Many cheap chargers from the Middle Kingdom, India and Malaysia have tiny transformers installed, the elements are chosen as cheap as possible without the necessary power reserve.

Grounding the user can become a dangerous circumstance in such situations, as shown by numerous cases with smartphones in the bathroom. For example, an incident in the village of Gryzlovo in February of this year (a charging smartphone that fell into the water led to a fatal electrical injury).

It can also be assumed that the case in Brazil was not so typical and a lightning discharge played a role there, which greatly increased the voltage and current strength in the network. This can be evidenced by both the condition of the phone, which, according to eyewitnesses, was literally blown up, and melted ear pads.
