Now every visitor of the Tsarskoye Selo (Ekaterininsky) Palace can feel like being in an audience with Catherine II. The Lyon Hall, where the Empress hosted a reception, has now been restored and again impresses with exquisite luxury and beauty.

Olga Taratynova, Director of the Tsarskoye Selo Museum-Reserve, believes that the Lyons Hall has a dramatic, but at the same time happy fate.

“The interior of the 19th century was highly valued already at that time. It was believed that it is no less amazing than the Amber Room. The restoration took about a year and was completed in record time,” said Olga Taratynova, director of the Tsarskoe Selo State Museum Reserve. And she emphasized that the opening of the Lyon Hall is a special holiday, since 74 years after the end of the war, the entire front suite of the palace was returned to the exposition.

According to Iraida Bott, Deputy Director for Research at the Tsarskoye Selo State Museum Reserve, the Lyon Hall is one of the most perfect interiors of Charles Cameron. It was created in 1781-1783 and got its name because of the wall decoration with silk made in Lyon.

This fabric, along with other interior items, was destroyed during the war. Therefore, before undertaking the restoration of the hall, the specialists had to resolve the issue with silk.

The difficulty was that it was made in Lyon, at a manufactory that does not exist now. It is good that in the storerooms of the palace there were fragments of rare fabric, according to which today’s successors of the Lyon masters successfully managed to recreate the fabric of the color of a golden bud – as the masters called it.

Now this fabric, made according to an old recipe, stretches the walls of the hall from the panels to the top edge of the cornice. She also decorated the furniture set of Catherine’s time. In total, 320 meters of material were used for finishing, which again became the main decorative element of the hall.

Mosaic panels and door portals made of lapis lazuli, a semi-precious blue stone with white and golden inclusions, harmoniously fit into this bright golden background.

Works with lapis lazuli were carried out by the Tsarskoye Selo Amber Workshop. Its specialists became famous for the restoration of the Amber and Agate Rooms, as well as the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in the Catherine Palace, which, after restoration, was opened in the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin in April this year.

As the director of the Tsarskoye Selo Amber Workshop Boris Igdalov noted, it was not easy to work with such a stone as lapis lazuli.

“There is very little of it in nature. It is found in Transbaikalia, but there is a different shade, more blue. Therefore, lapis lazuli from Afghanistan was used,” he explained. In total, it took about one ton of stone to recreate the decoration of the hall.

Refurbished as well as new interior items are displayed in the Lyon Hall. This is a set of furniture made according to Monighetti’s sketches, and an amazingly beautiful lapis lazuli chandelier with gilded bronze decor and the monogram of Empress Maria Alexandrovna.

But there is still a red carpet on the floor. They say that a similar coating was in the XIX century. However, the restorers intend to return the parquet to its former appearance. Its restoration has already begun, and, as experts say, it will most likely be ready by next year.

True, there is one difficulty here. The fact is that the authentic parquet floor included mother-of-pearl inserts. Then this did not bother anyone, because not so many people visited Catherine’s chambers.

Now, when the popularity of the Catherine Palace breaks all records, it is worth considering whether such a floor will withstand the onslaught of several thousand people who wish to look at one of Cameron’s best creations. Moreover, the museum staff has no doubt that the Lyon Hall will be no less in demand and popular with visitors than the famous Amber Room.
