California Big Sur Scenic Road USA | Big Sur
Big Sur (Big Sur) – a beautiful road along the Pacific coast in California, the west coast of the USA, one hundred miles (160 km) long, needs no introduction. Everyone who has been to these places, of course, tells how breathtaking the views were from the car window. Everyone here rides in convertibles and enjoys the sun and the ocean. And actually there is nothing more to say. You have to go and see the beauty of the Pacific coast with your own eyes.

Big Sur in the USA
Just imagine – 160 km of breathtaking beauty! Mountains, hills, forests, cliffs, coves, birds and animals on the shore, the waves are coming! This whole divine landscape was quite recently inaccessible to the human eye. The Spaniards looked at him, sailing on ships. And only in the 30s of the XX century did the Americans build their now famous Highway No. 1, bridges and connected Northern and Southern California.

The Great Land to the South in California
That is how the Spanish missionaries from Carmel called the road and the area along the coast the Great Land to the South (El Pais Grande del Sur). For them, Big Sur lay to the south, but we, on the contrary, moved north, but we completely agree with the assessment of European settlers. Robert Louis Stevenson considered this place “the world’s greatest meeting of ocean and land.” Under this statement, we are also ready to modestly put our names.
Along the way you will not meet big towns, except for the private ranches of those lucky people who live here. This is a practically uninhabited land in the center of a developed civilization. Isn’t it a miracle? So there is no doubt: if you came to the state of California, you must definitely drive along the first highway! And we, of course, were seduced by this opportunity.
How to get there
Like many Pacific Coast attractions, Big Sur is also on Route 1 from Los Angeles to San Francisco. From San Simeon to the city of Monterey lies this most beautiful land, which so delights tourists.
We really enjoyed traveling around Big Sur
If you go through Big Sur and stop at all the viewpoints, then a day is not enough to see everything! There are numerous parks along the coast that are also worth visiting. Of course, Big Sur is worth it to drive along these serpentine roads in both directions, and more than once. And better in different weather. We were lucky that we were able to see this stretch of coastline in changing conditions.
Ragged Point
But since we were in a hurry and were on a long hike with a tent, we did not have time to pay attention to all the sights of the road. Leaving San Luis Obispo in the morning, we managed to visit the ghostly Morro Rock, saw fur seals in San Simeon, enjoyed the view of the waterfall in McVay Bay in Julia Pfeiffer Burns Park, and then our path led us to Carmela and Monterey, where we drove the famous 17 Mile Road.
And if you’re only traveling in California, it’s quite possible to spend the whole day on the coast. Or stop in parks with a tent and devote much more time to this site. Why not?
Good to know:
We were traveling around California in a rental car in Los Angeles.
Booked in advance, about a month and a half before the trip. Car classes and prices were compared here →
Where to sleep along the way
If you plan to travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco on the Pacific Highway with one overnight stay, then we recommend staying in the tourist city of Cambria (list of hotels), which is just halfway there, and We also recommend the Quality Inn in San Simeon near Hearst Castle with a good breakfast and pool.
And if you are traveling with two overnight stays, be sure to spend the night in Monterey or Pacific Grove near 17 Mile Drive:

Hotels in Monterey – which one to choose 1
Here are some things to do while driving through Big Sur:
- San Simeon point – the opportunity to see fur seals;
- Ventana wilderness – this area is available only to experienced hikers;
- Julia Pfeiffer Burns state park and the famous McVey Bay and Falls;
- Andrew Molera state park – lots of redwood trails and a beautiful beach;
- Point Sur Lighthouse – automatic lighthouse since 1974;
- Bixby creek bridge – charming bridge and great ocean views;
- Point Lobos state reserve – a place where cypress trees grow.

Points of interest on the Big Sur map
Our first Big Sur trip from LA to SF
However, I will add that we were lucky to see two Big Surs. The weather changed dramatically as we drove along the Pacific Highway from Los Angeles to San Francisco. First we saw a cloudy version of the Pacific coast, and then in the blink of an eye the sun crept in from behind the clouds, the wind dispersed all the clouds, and the picture before our eyes changed beyond recognition.
US Pacific coast on a cloudy day
Let’s start with the morning and mystical Big Sur. Neither fog nor clouds could hide the beauty. And we enjoyed this trip, looking out of the windows of our car views of Big Sur. We stopped a couple of times, went to some trail, now I don’t even remember its name. This place is popular, as it was well equipped for parking and picnics. We went out to the ocean, to some pretty cove and beach, and looked at the elements, enjoying the moment of unity with it.

The sun first made a small attempt to break through the clouds, but then decided to wait until 11:00 o’clock.
The waves are coming
Clouds are hanging over the shore
Any weather is great for surfing!
Having been in the paws of the ocean, we go back to the mainland
There is a small grove near the parking lot where you can sit and have breakfast.
Motorcyclists brought the sun from the north!
Big Sur in sunny weather!
But just as we were approaching the Bixby Bridge, the sun came out from behind the thick morning clouds and the colors began to sparkle. We stopped in amazement at a small parking lot next to someone’s private property, and were truly amazed. And no words are needed to describe this beauty. Just enjoy Big Sur!
Our photos
The sun came out and adorned everything with its light! The road continues!
Gorgeous private beach!

Splendor of colors
And on the other hand, the continuation of the colorful holiday
And our road runs further!
Bixby Bridge
On Highway 1, along the edge of the Pacific Ocean, there is the large Bixby Bridge (officially Bixby Creek Bridge), which was opened at 1932 year.
And at one time, it was the longest single-arch concrete bridge in the California road system. It is still the tallest single-arch concrete bridge in the world. Its length is 98 meters in height and 213 meters in length. And of course, because of the popularity of the road, this is one of the most photographed bridges. Compared to him except that the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
The construction of the bridge was a lifesaver. After all, before, to bypass Bixby Creek, you had to drive 48 km around. The journey took about three days. In winter, this road was closed, so that the inhabitants of Carmel and Monterey could only contact the southern lands by sea, which in winter could also play a cruel joke on sailors.

Big Sur on the way San Francisco – Los Angeles
Our second Big Sur trip took place in April, and this time we drove along the first highway in a direction convenient for stops at observation decks – from San Francisco to Los Angeles and stopped mainly in those places that we missed last time.
We left Pacific Grove, where we spent the night in a pleasant motel with a good breakfast – Wilkies Inn .
First of all, we stopped at the Point Lobos Marine Reserve , where you can not only enjoy the beautiful nature and panoramic views of the Pacific coast, but also watch marine mammals resting on the shore and swimming in the lagoons, as well as large birds that breed directly on the rocks.
Point Lobos Preserve Map
This is how powerful the ocean is:
Point Lobos State Park is located three miles south of the city of Carmel and is a small peninsula, in a not very large area of \u200b\u200bwhich you can observe a variety of California wildlife: birds, sea lions – and flora.
The park is open from 8:00 to 17:00.
Interesting fact: Point Lobos is where the beautiful coastal road called Big Sur begins.
A foggy morning couldn’t spoil the view of a beautiful bay where whalers lived 100 years ago
Fur seals with cubs lie on the shore
Whalers’ hut
There are many hiking trails in Point Lobos Park – along the ocean or through a small forest , and there is also a descent to the beaches located in coves. In spring, its visitors have a chance to see different plants in bloom, and it is also a popular diving destination.
Of course we went to the trail to the rocks
Granite Point Trail is a trail along the coast of two bays, its length is 2 miles. First we see Whaler’s Cove, we pass by. We go into the whalers’ hut, where the Whaler Museum is now located. Then we get to the cliff Coal Chute Point and a small bay The Pit. We go around them and get to the Granite Point granite cliff, from where views of the ocean, rocks, the distant Bluefish Cove and Moss Cove in the north open.
Near the Cannery Point parking lot and have a better view of Bluefish Cove.
And on the way to Bird Island we looked at the turquoise lagoon, in which the water resembles the color of the sea in the Maldives
And here is the rock with arches
It is interesting to walk under the cypresses on the Cypress Grove trail the horizon is not visible
The rocks on the shore are covered with moss
And on the trees you can see unusual red moss
Good to know:
The entrance fee to the Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is $10 . You will be given a receipt to attach to the windshield of your car. It also allows you to visit 4 more natural parks on the same day, and you will not have to pay any more:
- Garrapata State Park – flowers and mountains
- Andrew Molera State Park – beaches and cliffs
- Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park – redwoods
- Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park – waterfalls
Big Sur California State Parks

To do this, you need to stop on the side of the Doud Creek in front of Garrapata Beach (GPS coordinates: 36.422803, -121.912401) and hike along the Garrapata Trail.
Start of the trail in Garrapata Park
We go on a short hike to the ocean
Admire beautiful flowers along the way
After about 350 meters we descended into a small canyon that was washed by Dowd Creek. There is Calla Lily Valley and beautiful white calla flowers grow.

Choosing a composition for a photo
If you go up the stairs and walk a little more, you will see a beautiful view of the beach and the ocean. But since it was foggy, we didn’t go, and you can’t get to the beach itself from there (you can get to the nago from the Garrapata State Beach parking lot, to which you need to drive about 500 more meters along the highway). Photographed from above.
The ladder is literally immersed in flowers!
On the coast of the Pacific Ocean
We drive further and literally after 3 miles we stop at the bridge over the mountain stream Rocky Creek.
There you have to go down a bit to take a picture of one of the attractions of Big Sur. Rocky Creek Bridge is a 151m long reinforced concrete arch bridge built in 1932 across Rocky Creek and Las Piedras Canyon.
Near the Rocky Creek Bridge, as well as at the Bixby Bridge, quite a lot of people already in the morning
We waited in line, took a quick photo from the Rocky Creek Bridge and drove further along Big Sur
Going over the bridge you will have great views of the ocean and coastline. From there, you can clearly see the bridge itself. And from the parking lot you can go up the road a little to the canyon, there will be an observation point on the bridge and beautiful views of the canyon.
Continue on Pacific Highway
And then we drove to Andrew Molera State Park where most of the trails were closed due to storms and mudslides. And to get on the one and only Ridge/Bluffs Trail, you had to wade across the creek.

After that we were going to visit McVeigh Falls in the park Julia Pfeiffer Burns , but it turned out to be closed altogether. And another Pfeiffer Big Sur park, although it was open, we also missed it due to bad weather and immediately went to rest in Plaskett Creek Campground.

Pulling up to our Plaskett Creek Campground
Plaskett Creek Campground is the most expensive West Coast campsite we’ve ever stayed at. On weekends, it is no less popular among Americans than lodging in Yosemite Park. For a simple tent site we paid $43 (even more than next to the famous Arches Park), and it was booked several months in advance.
The only thing that cost us more was an overnight stay at Myrtle Beach in South Carolina.
Nevertheless, we chose it because it was convenient for us to spend the night in it along the way and at the same time go on foot to the ocean. There are a couple of interesting trails directly from Plaskett Creek Campground:
- Jade Cave & Plaskett Rock Point – 1.5 miles. Two parking lots – one opposite Plasket Rock Point, the other – opposite the bay. But we are going from the campsite, and it is more convenient for us to start from an elongated rock. From Plaskett Point – beautiful views of the ocean and rocky coast. And Jade Bay is famous for the fact that jade can be found on the shore. The descent is steep.
- Sand Dollar Beach is the largest sandy beach on the Big Sur coast, nestled behind the Pacific Valley Cliffs. Trail – 0.7 miles. Do not forget to go to the overlook, which offers views of both the beach itself and the ocean and coastal cliffs. If you’re lucky, you can see dolphins and whales.

And this is the picture that appeared before us in the morning
We had breakfast and started getting ready for the journey.
The next morning we woke up early, but we were in no hurry and took a little walk in nature. And then again set off on a journey along the ocean.
The road to Big Sur is full of twists and turns
Hairpins like these are common
Our first stop was Salmon Creek Falls , which is also located in the Los Padres National Forest. This is a double waterfall with a height of 37 meters, which falls especially powerfully from the Santa Luzia Mountains in spring. From a small parking lot, located on a steep picturesque serpentine, it is 500 meters to go to it. The climb is 18 meters (first go down to the waterfall, and then go up to the track).
