5 Best LG Front-Load Washers of 2023

Written by David Ellerby and Mark Brezinski

Updated May 5, 2023

We’ve crunched the numbers, and there’s no question that front-loaders are superior to top-loaders in terms of the efficiency, cleaning power, and stain removal. Nevertheless, they remain a tough sell for most folks, since there is a strong nostalgia factor for people who want washing machines that look like the ones they used growing up—top-load washers with pole agitators.

For the past several years, LG Electronics has been doing its darnedest to change that fact. We’ve tested many machines from the Korean giant, and its machines consistently rank among the best to pass through our state-of-the-art labs. Even better, they’re filled with fun, innovative features that make them a pleasure to use. Our favorite of the bunch, though, is the LG WashTower WKEX200HBA
(available at Best Buy for $1,799.99)

Editor’s Note:

Due to supply chain challenges and soaring demand, there is widespread unavailability of home appliances and long wait times for delivery of backordered product. If you’re a consumer in need of a washer or dryer, here are the best places to buy in-stock appliances right now.

Best Overall

  • Style: Wash tower
    Dimensions: 74.38″ x 27″ x 30.38″ (H x W x D)
    Capacity: 4.5-cu.-ft. washer, 7.4-cu.-ft. dryer
  • Special features: Combined washer and dryer tower
  • Smart features: LG ThinQ app support
  • Dispensers: 4-tray dispenser (prewash and main wash detergent, bleach, fabric softener)
  • Energy Star rated: Yes

We love LG front-load washers, so we were excited to try out LG’s WKEX200HBA WashTower laundry center. The stacked design of this washer-and-dryer duo makes it easy to fit into a variety of spaces, and the washer can coordinate with the dryer to automatically assign cycles. The WKEX200HBA features solid washing and drying capabilities and uses a lot less energy and water than average.

Its cycle times were all impressively speedy — a normal wash finished in 35 minutes, and the Speed Wash finished in 16 minutes, which is almost twice as fast as the average quick cycle length. When it came to testing stain removal, the WKEX200HBA was able to get our test loads of laundry between 1% and 4% more clean than average. Its drying capabilities were fine, and we particularly liked how the device automatically assigned a drying cycle based on the washer cycle that was selected (though you can manually select your drying cycle as well).

The energy efficiency is another plus. The WashTower uses roughly 40% less energy per cycle compared to other washer-dryer sets. That not only reduces your carbon footprint but could also save you about $23 annually.

However, the Delicates cycle on the WKEX200HBA wasn’t so… delicate. We use a mechanical action strip to measure gentleness, which allows us to track how many threads pull loose over a cycle. While the average Delicates cycle results in about 30 pulled threads, the WashTower’s Delicates cycle resulted in 52 pulled threads. It also ended a washing cycle with items retaining 92.9% of their weight in water; 12% more than average.

Other LG Front-Loaders We Tested

  • Dimensions: 39″ x 27″ x 33 1/4″(H x W x D)
  • Capacity: 5.0 cu. ft.
  • Special features: Steam, Allergiene
  • Smart features: LG ThinQ app support
  • Dispensers: detergent and fabric softener (18-load reservoir)
  • Matching dryer: LG DLEX4500B (electric), LG DLGX4501B (gas)
  • Energy Star rated: Yes

If you need to get through tons of laundry, the LG WM4500HBA should be your go-to front-loader. Its huge 5.0 cu. ft. drum will help you tumble through piles of dirty clothes, and its automatic detergent and fabric softener dispensers only need to be refilled every 18 cycles. It also has some nice smart features, like remote start and notifications, which can help with accessibility (or for those of us who set a cycle going and then completely forget about it).

The WM4500HBA has average cleaning performance, which is more than enough for lightly-soiled laundry, but it might struggle with scrubbing out significant stains. Still, we believe this machine succeeds at what it’s trying to do, which is clean lots of laundry very quickly. As such, we’d mainly recommend this washer for large families, those who pile up their beds with comforters or warm blankets, or anyone who has trouble keeping up with the sheer volume of their laundry.

  • Dimensions: 39″ x 27″ x 33. 25″ (H x W x D)
  • Capacity: 5.0 cu. ft.
  • Special features: TurboWash 360°
  • Smart features: Smart Pairing, AI Wash, LG ThinQ app support
  • Dispensers: ezDispense automatic detergent dispenser
  • Matching dryer: LG DLEX6700B (electric) (electric), LG DLGX6701B (gas)
  • Energy Star rated: Yes

The LG WM6700HBA has a futuristic look and some impressive performance that should appeal to any busy family.

For starters, it has a huge, 5-cubic-foot drum, which should vastly improve your laundry throughput. On top of that, its cycles are incredibly fast, letting you power through piles of laundry. As a cherry on top, it also features an automatic detergent dispenser that further cuts down on laundry overhead.

In terms of stain-scrubbing strength, the WM6700HBA also doesn’t disappoint. The only cycle that didn’t quite measure up was its AI-powered wash, which took much longer to finish than other cycles and didn’t wash as well.

  • Dimensions: 40.75” x 29″ x 32.88″ (H x W x D)
  • Capacity: 5.2 cu. ft.
  • Special features:
  • Smart features: LG ThinQ app support
  • Dispensers: No
  • Matching dryer: LG DLEX8100V
  • Energy Star rated: Yes

There’s a lot to be said in favor of the LG WM8100HVA: modern looks, quick cycles that finish with clean, relatively dry laundry and quality features like steam cleaning and a sanitize cycle. The 5.2-cubic-foot capacity stainless steel drum is big enough to handle large laundry needs and is quiet during operation. Both the Normal and Heavy Duty cycles ended up scrubbing out stains at an above average rate during testing and the special features – like “6motion technology” which tumbles clothes with an above average number of wash motions to better care for fabrics – all deliver on performance.

The WM8100HVA also had a notable spin cycle, which removed an extra 10% of water compared to the average washer providing an assist to both your dryer and your energy bill. And with a Normal cycle lasting only 26 minutes and a Quick Wash cycle that took an impressive 17 minutes to complete, you won’t have to run this washer for very long to get clean clothes. However, the Delicates cycle was a let down showing 33% more wear and tear on the mechanical action strip we use during testing. It’s also rather expensive, compared to models with similar performance and features.

  • Good cleaning

  • Low water retention

  • Steam features

  • Not very gentle

  • Expensive

During testing, the LG WM4200HWA did well enough: It gave a quality, if not noteworthy, clean during Normal, Heavy Duty and Delicates cycles were it performed slightly above average. The Normal cycle finished up in an impressive 34 minutes, and the washer also has a Speed Wash that takes just 16 minutes. Disappointingly the Speed Wash was the only cycle that did worse than average, removing 1.64% fewer stains.

The WM4200HWA’s spin cycle was likewise solid, removing an additional 10% of water weight from the test loads set to Heavy Duty and Speed Wash. While the digital cycle-selection dial felt a bit laggy and cumbersome, we liked the steam settings to sanitize or reduce wrinkles, and the minimal amount of water and electricity required by the machine.

How We Tested LG Front-Load Washers

The Testers

Hello! We’re Reviewed’s appliance testing team. Between us, we have dozens of years of experience lab-testing appliances, and today we’re turning our attention to washers for large families.

Regardless of what we test, we take a two-pronged approach. For starters, we run each appliance through the paces with a battery of standardized objective tests, which lets us cross-compare each products’ performance. We also make sure to just use the products normally, like how anyone would use them in their own home. This pass lets us catch any user interface issues or particularly brilliant design flourishes that you’ll only notice on the hundredth time you do something.

The Tests

Reviewed / Timothy Renzi

Every washer on this list features both a sanitize cycle and a heavy or extra heavy soil cycle.

Every washing machine that comes into Reviewed’s labs gets put through the same testing regime, which addresses both performance and user-friendliness. We look at stain removal, wear and tear, water retention, and cycle time.

When testing washing machines through the lens of large families, we specifically look at the washer’s drum size to gauge how much laundry it can hold at one time—our minimum size requirement is 5.2 cubic feet—as well as whether it has a sanitize cycle and a heavy or extra heavy soil setting to deal with all manners of family generated stains, from muddy knees and poopy diapers to pasta sauce and red wine spills.

What You Should Know Before You Buy A LG Front-Load Washer

How do you clean an LG front-load washer?

In case you didn’t know, yes, you do need to clean your washing machine from time to time—especially if it’s a front-loader!

While a smelly washer is a much more rare problem nowadays compared to the earliest front-loaders, it’s still good to give the interior of your washer—especially the gasket lining the front—a wipe down every so often. A good rule is: If your washer stinks, only you can clean it.

How do you drain an LG front-load washer?

This is one of the more common questions asked about LG washers, which is surprising. You shouldn’t need to drain an LG—or any—washer. If that process is not happening automatically, you should schedule a service visit with the manufacturer.

How do you “spin only” on an LG front-load washer?

Most LG washers have a “spin only” setting that you can access via the control panel’s cycle options. There you can also change various other factors pertaining to that the wash cycle.

LG washing machine rating – the best models

LG from South Korea continues to conquer an increasing number of users of its equipment around the world. Thanks to innovation and the use of the latest developments, combined with an affordable price, a huge number of people choose this brand of home appliances. And buyers of washing machines especially note the huge set of useful functions in LG devices, the convenient practical design of any model included in the top LG machines.

How to choose a particular model of LG washing machine? Which one is better to buy? Based on many criteria, we have created a rating of LG washing machines for you. Having studied our review, you can easily make a choice.

Ultra-narrow body

Those who appreciate the maximum compactness will definitely like the ultra-slim LG FH0G6SD0 with its 36 cm wide direct drive. With its “minimalism”, the machine will surprise even the most experienced user with its characteristics: 4 kg of laundry in terms of capacity and 1000 revolutions during the spin cycle. In addition, the machine adapts to the specific amount of laundry, taking into account the set mode.

The machine is very gentle on fabrics due to a system of various rotation algorithms specially developed by LG experts. The model has an inverter motor, no belt. The drum turns the rotor directly. Due to the simplicity of the design, reliability, optimal performance and durability are achieved.

The machine performs self-cleaning automatically after a cycle of 30 washes. The addition of chemicals is not required. The machine is controlled electronically through a rich touch screen. Model advantages:

  1. 13 washing programs.
  2. Virtually silent operation with the “correct” professional installation.
  3. Extended 10 year engine warranty (this applies to all direct drive models).

There are also disadvantages. If there is a “rinse + spin” mode, there is no “spin” mode. Increased requirements for correct installation – due to the small size and low weight, persistent vibrations appear in the presence of the slightest sign of uneven installation. Not the largest capacity of the machine, you won’t be able to wash large things.

LG F-80B8MD is suitable for an ordinary family. With obvious affordability, prices will please such characteristics as a load of 5.5 kg, a case depth of 45 cm and a spin at 800 rpm. At the same time, the number of functions is impressive.

Water consumption, washing time are determined by the machine independently, based on the amount of laundry and the set mode. In addition, the machine itself will adjust the amount of water needed for washing. The density of linen is estimated by special. system “6 movements of care”: depending on the density of the linen, the desired operating mode of the drum is selected. Problems arising in the device can be reported automatically to the manufacturer’s support service using a regular smartphone.

At low temperatures, a “boiling effect” is available, which allows you to process things without actually boiling. Bubble drum: provides the water entering the machine with special bubbles, which allows you to better and faster remove dirt. There is a special mode “Health care”. It ensures that even the smallest residues of laundry detergent are completely rinsed out, which eliminates the appearance of allergies. The advantages of the model can be considered:

  • a wide range of modes for washing;
  • price availability;
  • minimum noise level;
  • interface accessibility and electronic control principle;
  • The washing progress is shown on a special display.

The disadvantage is that the maximum spin speed is only 800 rpm. Users also don’t like the design. Some buyers consider it rustic, although this opinion is not shared by all consumers.

Models with drying

6AD3. Both machines are direct drive.

LG F12U2HDM1N is as compact as possible in dimensions – 45 cm deep. It is quite suitable for a standard family of four. It also washes and dries. This saves a lot of time. In the spin mode, the drum reaches a maximum of 1200 revolutions. The number of washing programs is fourteen. Includes a special “quick wash” mode Turbo Wash. On such a program, washing is carried out in half an hour, it is very convenient when you need to quickly wash lightly soiled things. Just like in models with an ultra-thin case, there is a “boil without heating” mode. The drum fills the water with special bubbles, which allows you to better and faster remove dirt.

When connected to the Internet, the model allows you to search and download additional washing programs produced by the manufacturer. Modes are constantly updated. This technology is called Tag On. At a fairly high price, the model fully justifies itself due to the number of programs and steam drying.

The main advantages of the model can be considered: extremely positive consumer reviews, confirming the maximum efficiency of the machine and its popularity, the convenience of placing the washer and dryer in the home space, a wide selection of programs for both washing and drying.

The machine, unfortunately, is also not without its shortcomings. She does not have programs for rinsing and spinning. The power button functions in “child lock” mode. The stated drying performance is not available at maximum load – perfect drying can only be expected when two to four kg of laundry is processed.

It is not possible to dry laundry with lint – the lint will simply remain in the washing machine.

LG F1496AD3 can no longer be called just a washing machine in the usual sense, but a real unit that allows both washing and drying. Its characteristics will really impress even the owners of mini-hotels, catering establishments. With its help, you can serve the laundry, which operates on small volumes.

With a depth of only 55 cm, the load weight reaches 9.7 kilograms, 1400 spin cycles. With all this, the machine is as stable as possible, does not vibrate. There are eight modes. There is a program “Intensive 60”, which allows you to remove the most common pollution in an hour. Also, there are modes for rinsing and spinning, a special mode for washing children’s things. Water temperature – 20 – 95 degrees, depending on the set mode and the task set by the user.

As in the previous models, the drum allows you to add bubbles to the water, which improves the quality of washing. If the load is not full, the machine will automatically adjust the washing efficiency, taking into account water and energy savings. The so-called “smart wash” algorithm is activated: the machine will weigh the amount of laundry and determine how much water is needed, calculate the required amount of electricity.

There are four programs for drying laundry: “Standard” – fast, using cold water; “Eco” – water is not used at all, linen is dried with hot air with a temperature of up to 80 degrees; “Delicate” – the same as in the “Eco” mode, only the air warms up to 70 degrees; “For ironing” – the linen is not completely dried, it remains slightly damp. The model has many advantages.

  1. Economical even with minimum load.
  2. Minimal noise and vibration levels due to direct drive.
  3. The machine itself constantly monitors faults, displays errors on the display.
  4. When you turn off alerts, you can wash at night, will not interfere with sleep due to almost complete noiselessness.

There are not so many minuses. There is no washing mode at 30 degrees (this is important for washing, for example, cotton items so that they do not “shrink”). The minimum load is 1 kg, you can not wash less.

Narrow models

LG F-2J7HS2S and LG FH-2G6WD2 should be distinguished from the models of this group. Model LG F-2J7HS2S has a width of 45 cm. At the same time, it has all the necessary attributes of a modern washing machine. It makes it possible to load up to 7 kg of laundry, wring out at 1200 rpm, has a “bubble” drum. Of the features of the model, it is worth noting the presence of the True Steam function – the steam function. There is a “Refresh” mode, it allows you not to wash clothes with water and powders at all, odors are simply neutralized and the clothes are smoothed.

A special “trick” “Washing on an accelerated program” allows you to wash clothes in 14 minutes.

Machine wash large duvets with any pile. You can throw the laundry right during washing, download the application and update the machine software, adding new emerging programs released by the manufacturer.

LG FH-2G6WD2, with its affordability, has all the necessary arsenal of additional features for effective washing. She has: “Hypoallergenic wash”; “Intensive 60”; “Quickly 30”. The machine allows loading 6.5 kg and spinning at 1200 rpm. Just like all LG models, touch control.

Cars with standard body

LG F-4J9VS2S and LG F-1096TD3 models are worth mentioning in this group. Both of LG’s best washing machines in this group are full-sized. The first has 13 washing programs, the second has 14. The first model washes and dries, the main washing parameters are higher. At the same time, it costs significantly more. LG F-4J9VS2S washes a whole pile of clothes – nine kilograms, and it can wring out clothes at a gigantic speed of up to 1400 rpm. The LG F-109 has the same characteristics.6TD3, it can only wash up to 8 kg of laundry

Stylish appearance, quiet operation and amazing washing quality: these are the pluses that unite both models. As a minus, only a high price can be singled out, but in essence this is not a minus, because you pay for functionality and quality. In all other respects, LG F-4J9VS2S and LG F-1096TD3 have all the usual described functions inherent in devices of this brand. Which is better to buy, you decide based on your needs.
