Billy Joel – Music of the 70s-80s

Billy Joel

He was nicknamed the American Elton John. He has long been ranked among the classics of modern music by numerous fans, because the compositions he composed have passed a serious test of time. His name is Billy Joel. The famous composer, singer and performer Billy Joel was born back in 1949 in New York. His touring activity began as part of the school VIA. A little later, in the early 70s, young Joel too recklessly signed a long-term and uncomfortable contract for him with Family Productions. True, he later managed to get rid of it. With this firm, he released his first solo record, which, in fact, turned out to be absolutely unsuccessful. Then the musician went to Los Angeles. It was there, under the pseudonym Bill Martin, that he continued his musical career in city clubs. They were interested in the bigwigs of one of the largest record labels.

They made the right decision. The new release “Piano Man” quickly took a very good place in the charts, and the composition of the same name subsequently became Joel’s hallmark.
In 1977, another record appeared on store shelves, which turned out to be full of masterpieces. It was called “The Stranger”. Another album, 52nd Street, only cemented Joel’s status as one of the best performers of his time. In the 80s, during the heyday of AOR and melodic pop-rock, three compositions of the musician firmly topped the charts.

1987 brought him another triumph. It was Joel who became the first US pop and rock star to perform in the USSR. In fact, this visit was the first real breakthrough of American culture in the Soviet Union.
In the 90s, Joel had another work called “River of Dreams”. This disc brought him another nomination for the prestigious Grammy Award. And a little later, in 1999, the name of Billy Joel took a well-deserved place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. At that time, the total circulation of his releases had already exceeded 100 million copies. In the 2000s, the maestro released a long-awaited album called “Fantasies and Delusions”.

Billy Joel in Moscow

Includes piano compositions. Thus, he paid tribute to his main passion – the piano. In recent years, Joel continues to give concerts and takes part in a number of charity events. He never had a pronounced artistic image.

But, nevertheless, it has always attracted and continues to attract not only fans of the “pure” stage, but also lovers of truly “rock” sound. And this is probably the most important thing. After a long break, in 2006, the musician decided to go on tour to support the new My Lives box set. It contained previously unreleased compositions as well as demos.
