Black Friday 2023 in Russia

Black Friday sale, or Black Friday, is held every year. In 2023, Black Friday in Russia will be, as always, in November – the date of the promotion falls on the 24th. However, in some stores, it may start a little earlier than the indicated date.

What is Black Friday

In the US and Europe, Black Friday is a period of sales and big discounts in stores for Christmas. Usually Thanksgiving is celebrated on Thursday, and then, on Friday, the Christmas marathon of sales – Black Friday – starts. On its first day in stores, the biggest discounts on all goods, and everyone tries to buy during this period, as it is the most profitable.

Black Friday 2023 is a big holiday for all people. On this day, many try to take a day off. Of course, except for retailers. For them, this day is the period of the most intense and hot work.

Many people work throughout the year to get the expensive item they dreamed of on that very day. Most electrical and household goods manufacturers are timing the release of a new product line for Black Friday. So they not only stimulate demand, but also advertise a new product.

Why is it called so? There were cases when on this day the movement in all major cities of the United States was completely paralyzed. The police, ambulance and firemen could not get to the place of the call. As a result, there is a large increase in injuries and accidents on this particular day of the year.

Most of the TV reports from Western sales that we are shown on TV show Black Friday. This Friday shops open very early – at five o’clock in the morning. And the biggest discounts are in the first hours. Since it is quite difficult to get into shops on this day, despite the early hours, a queue forms at the entrance. The most persistent even spend the night at the window.

At the end of the first day of Black Friday, there are often empty shelves in the store. An unforeseen event! Although the buyers behave quite politely – there are no fights over the goods, people calmly stand in line at the checkout, do not push at the entrance. After all, on the eve of Christmas, and quarreling with your neighbor before this holiday is a bad omen.

However, on the territory of the CIS countries one cannot hope for such a thing. The Eldorado retail chain is infamous, which became famous for arranging sales at a fabulously low price. In stores during these discounts, there were cases when people fought each other over a laptop or microwave, got crushed in a crush, ruined clothes, etc. One can only hope that over time the culture will change, and relationships, even with a casual passerby, will be valued higher than the momentary pleasure of buying.

However, Black Friday is not so widely known in Russia, but its popularity is increasing every year. First of all, due to the fact that we are still inferior to our Western neighbors in terms of discounts. On the day of Black Friday, goods in the store can be purchased 2-3 times cheaper than the rest of the time. In Russia, the maximum amount of discounts on sales before the New Year is 30-40% (at best).

Of course, you can see advertisements with much higher numbers, but this price reduction is not associated with seasonal sales, such as Black Friday, but with other phenomena – you need to free up space in the warehouse, the product is obsolete, or competitors have brought in a similar product that is superior in terms of price-quality ratio. Therefore, the influx of buyers is not so significant.

Nevertheless, Black Friday in Russia has become a traditional event in many retail chains, malls and online stores. Every year, sales are increasingly reducing prices and becoming no less popular than in the West.

Benefits for sellers

Black Friday is one of the biggest sales of the year. This is not to say that trade is at a loss – the product will certainly never be sold below the price that was paid when buying it in bulk. In addition, the discounted price fully justifies both transportation costs and the costs of the sale itself – salaries to sellers, rent of premises, payment of taxes.

However, it’s worth pointing out a few reasons why salespeople turn down big profits each year from selling margins:

  1. Advertising. A purchase for Christmas and New Year will be remembered for a long time, and in the future it is possible that the buyer will come again.
  2. A large influx of buyers creates an opportunity to sell more units of the product, since on Black Friday every year demand exceeds supply, and even with a lower margin, profits do not suffer much.
  3. Sales are beneficial to many and stimulate other industries in addition to retail. For example, lending and transport. Unlike retail, banks do not follow the Black Friday tradition, and every year they issue loans during this period at the same, if not higher rates.
  4. Sometimes the owners of large retail chains in the West adhere to strict Christian traditions and believe that Christmas gifts should be given to their customers, especially the poorest of them. This is not fantasy. In particular, Rockefeller firmly believed that a tenth of their income should be donated to the church and to charity.
  5. It is considered bad manners to return an item purchased on Black Friday due to defects. After all, it is considered a kind of gift. Therefore, in many stores they sell goods that do not meet the standards, and the return rate is low.

What shoppers in Russia need to know

First of all, don’t try to buy everything you see on Black Friday. Unfortunately, we have not yet matured to the level to carefully plan our purchases. Most are for sure. And, as opinion polls show, many buyers regret that they bought something on sale. They didn’t need the thing, they simply went on about emotions.

Second – try not to take part in crushes, fights over goods. Simply bypass them. Not a single purchase, even with a good Black Friday discount, is worth a spoiled mood before the holidays, for yourself or another person. And even more so a dislocated arm or a torn dress. Moreover, you still have to pay money for the purchase, albeit a smaller amount.

Third – check the warranty card and data sheet for complex products. Keep your receipts. As a rule, most of the goods on sale in Russia are of lower quality than those sold at a regular price. Perhaps they have hidden defects, increasing the risk of warranty repairs. If quality is more important to you than price, try to buy the item on other days.

How long does Black Friday last?

It is officially accepted that Black Friday in Russia starts on the last Friday of November and lasts all weekend. That is, in 2023, the dates are from November 24 to 26.

When Black Friday will take place in a particular store, it is impossible to say for sure, many Russian stores can launch their Black Friday without being tied to official dates. Someone decides to hold a sale not even in November, someone starts in the right month, but much earlier, and someone decides to extend discounts after the accepted end date. Its duration may also vary. It turns out that each store or shopping center can, at its discretion, set how long Black Friday lasts for them.

Black Friday discounts and promotions

Black Friday in the USA, and throughout the rest of the world, is the main holiday for those who love quality things and know how to save money. Just one day a year – the first Friday after Thanksgiving – all the stores in America agree and for the whole day bring down the prices of almost all their goods to record levels! On ordinary days and on holidays in the US, you will often find discounts of 20-30 percent. Not bad! But for Black Friday, a 20% discount is just for chickens to laugh at! On this day, you can easily buy your favorite things at half price, and even cheaper – the main thing is not to miss the moment!

Black Friday is especially hot every year! At the end of October, many stores begin to flirt with their customers by offering nice small discounts – a kind of aperitif before a huge feast!

30% from Levis, 15% from Amazon, 10% from Backcountry… so far this is just a seed. The real madness starts on Black Friday! It is the first Friday after Thanksgiving that turns deep black!

By the way, why black in particular?

Many versions. In addition to the fact that retailers work hard this Friday, well, just in a black way, which characterizes this celebration in the best possible way for us, there are several more theories. Tellingly, they are all related to trade in one way or another.

The first version is pragmatic: the sellers themselves brought the name Black Friday to the USA. In those distant times, when people still used ballpoint pens, there was a rule in retail: losses were recorded with red paste, profits with black. And since the period leading up to Black Friday was not very often characterized by brisk trading, the trade balance abounded in red tones. But immediately after Thanksgiving, when people went for gifts for the upcoming Christmas holidays, this trend changed dramatically – the red pen went into the long drawer, and its place was occupied by a black one for a long time!

The second version is lyrical: the association “Black Friday – sales” came a little later. The Philadelphia cops were the first to name Black Friday after Thanksgiving, simply unable to find other words to describe the fantastic scale of traffic jams that paralyzed the entire city that day. In part, they were aggravated by the strike of bus drivers, and therefore there were even more cars on the streets – everyone went for gifts. Drivers, law enforcement officers, and everyone else were so nervous that they called this day black out of emotion – and so the name stuck.

Now it is impossible to say exactly why Black Friday in America is black, and not red, blue or crazy. Maybe it’s because the hard-working salespeople are working their ass off, or because of blackened sales reports, or because traffic jams this Friday are a black day for the police … Perhaps all three reasons are to blame for this. Now no one knows for sure. But it seems to me that this is even good – a note of mystery has not yet spoiled any holiday!

Now let’s talk about what we know for sure!

1. Black Friday in America: what date?

Calculating exactly when Black Friday USA is quite simple. To do this, we just need to look at the calendar. First, let’s count the fourth Thursday of November. On this day, Americans celebrate one of the main national holidays – Thanksgiving Day.

It’s even easier – the day following this holiday is Black Friday. Mark the date and never miss it. It’s better to check your favorite American online stores in advance, even if you are not going to buy anything. So, just out of curiosity – you will find a lot of cool emotions.

2. Black Friday: a list of online stores.

Initially, when Black Friday was just beginning to be celebrated with steep discounts, in the 60s of the last century, there were no online stores yet. For your discount, you had to go to the nearest store, stand in a crazy queue there, and only then get to the cherished goal – goods with discounts.

Although the situation is different today, one thing is for sure: despite the fact that the Black Friday sale on the Internet will be incredibly magnificent, generous and long, we, alas, will miss many discounts. And all because Black Friday in the US is still mostly a day of discounts in classic offline stores. Many of them open already at midnight, others in the morning before dawn, others do not close at all. And people. .. people take a queue ahead of time, and patiently, and sometimes not very much, wait for the guards to open the doors in order to rush into the store like crazy, knocking everything in their path and raking up heaps of boxes with bewitching stickers -70%, -80%, -90%.

This does not mean that you and I should not hope for Black Friday in November – there will be a lot of discounts on the Internet. But offline there will be even more of them. However, in this case, the Americans have one more discount holiday in store for you and me – and this is Cyber Monday. On this day, the carnival of discounts comes to the Internet. But this is a topic for a separate article.

Results

In the meantime, I would like to sum up a little:

  1. Black Friday in the US is a cool opportunity to make a bargain.
  2. Despite the fact that the main discounts fall on offline stores, the Internet is also waiting for an avalanche of sales.
  3. Look beyond multi-brand stores like Amazon, 6pm and Backcountry.
