Black Friday 2022 came and went, and what a shopping event it was. It not only came early, but lasted quite a bit longer after the actual, official day it is on – November 24. If you’re interested in learning which phones got discounted this year, and what to expect during Black Friday 2023 based on its predecessor – you’re in the right place!

Black Friday 2022: what were the best deals?

A few weeks before Black Friday, Best Buy came in with the early deals, which included some solid discounts on many smartphones, most notably Samsung’s Galaxy series. The top tier flagship Galaxy S22 Ultra went on to become up to $200 cheaper than its usual price at Best Buy. Speaking of which, it was also up to $348 off on Amazon too, when the big shopping event’s date actually came!

Just the Galaxy S22 Ultra alone was up to $825 off at Samsung. com (with trade-in), up to $200 at Best Buy with no strings attached, and again – also up to $348 off on Amazon. Crazy!

After Best Buy, Samsung was also quick to come in with the early Black Friday deals, offering particularly huge discounts on all of its phones, with one caveat, though – trade-in. Samsung’s Black Friday deals truly did include all Samsung phones, though, from the aforementioned flagship, to its mid-rangers like the Galaxy S21 FE, which was up to $450 off with trade-in.

As the Black Friday event came around, we saw all other stores join in on the fun, most notably including Amazon, Walmart, plus the major carriers like T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon.

Those looking for affordable phones had options too, like Samsung’s Galaxy A53 5G, which was notably $100 off on Amazon, making it just $349.99.

Of course, on the other side of the spectrum, Samsung’s cutting-edge, expensive foldable phones, like the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 were also discounted for Black Friday. Even better, they were among the first phones from those early deals to actually drop in price significantly.

Eventually the foldable Z Fold 4 got up to $1350 cheaper at Samsung’s website (with trade-in), while the Z Flip 4 – up to $750 off (71%)! So Black Friday is by far the best time to get a foldable, no argument there! So if you’re interested – be sure to stick around for Black Friday 2023, when we’re surely going to get similar, if not better deals! Just prepare a trade-in device, if you’re planning to buy from Samsung. com in particular (and get the sweetest deal in return).

When is Black Friday 2023?

Black Friday 2023 will technically be on Friday, November 24, 2023. However, as always, we can expect early Black Friday 2023 deals to start popping up weeks prior to the event, so stay tuned!

When do Black Friday deals start?

The next Black Friday event starts on November 24, 2023 – the day after Thanksgiving. But as always, many retailers will begin promoting the event days and even weeks prior to that day. Similarly, we’ll have remaining discounts offered well into the following weekend and week, past the day of the event, so even if you’re late, you’ll likely be able to catch a good phone deal.

Normally Black Friday deals start showing up weeks before the actual event, usually with Best Buy and Samsung launching the earliest good offers. Last time around we saw those two launch a huge number of great early deals, and popular stores such as Target, BestBuy and Walmart followed shortly after. But of course, the top deals with the biggest price cuts will launch on the day of the Black Friday event – November 24.

iPhone 13 Pro: $5/month w/ new line @ Verizon
iPhone deals rarely get better than this. Verizon is offering the Phone 13 Pro for just $5 per month when you open a new line. You’ll need to purchase your phone via a monthly installment plan and you’ll need to make your purchase online only. Plus, you’ll get an extra $200 credit when you switch from a competing carrier.  

iPhone 13: $50 free gift card @ Apple
Apple isn’t offering a discount on the iPhone 13 exactly, but it will give you back a little money in the form of a gift card. This deal also applies to the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 and iPhone SE. Apple’s Black Friday sale concludes on Monday (November 28).

iPhone 12 mini: $1/month w/ unlimited @ AT&T

It might be an older phone nowadays, but the iPhone 12 mini is still a great little device. It features 5G support, an OLED display, and a dual 12MP camera system that’s still good by today’s standards, all in a pocket-sized body. 

iPhone SE 2020: was $149 now $99 @ Walmart
There are more recent iPhone SE models available, but if you’re looking for a cheap phone to give to your child, this $99 iPhone SE is hard to beat. It runs the latest version of IOS, and its A12 Bionic processor holds up pretty well.

Refurbished iPhones: from $379 @ Apple
Apple offers some of the best refurbished devices in the industry. They’re rigorously tested and restored to like-new condition by Apple and they come with a 1-year warranty. Apple currently has refurbished iPhone 11 and 12 series phones starting from $649.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is Samsung’s powerhouse smartphone. Samsung made several improvements to its foldable lineup this year with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 seeing several upgrades across the board. While its eye-watering $1,799 MSRP is normally a steep asking price, Amazon is offering it for a slightly more reasonable $1,351. No trade-in is required for this discount.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has better battery life and is more durable than the Z Flip 3. Performance is also excellent thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip, so no matter what you throw at this foldable, it will keep up with ease.

Samsung’s smaller foldable from 2021 remains a great phone for any user fed up of oversized phones. Aside from its compact foldable form, it offers a powerful Snapdragon 888 chipset, dual rear cameras and an outer display for checking notifications without opening your phone.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is Samsung’s top (non-folding) phone, and one of the most fully featured Android devices around. With its large display, in-built stylus, quad rear cameras and powerful processor, you’ll want for nothing.

It’s no longer Samsung’s flagship, but The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is still a solid phone. This particular configuration also sports 256GB of storage and 12GB of RAM.

Pixel 7 Pro: was $899 now $499 @ Mint Mobile
Save $300 on Google’s best flagship phone when you buy the Pixel 7 Pro through Mint Mobile. Google Pixel 6a: was $449 now $299 @ Google
The Pixel 6a is the best budget phone of the year, even at its retail price. But for $299, there is no better phone. You get incredible camera performance, the Tensor G1 chipset with all its AI smarts, and a pocketable form factor. This is the best Android phone for the money.

Google Pixel 6a: was $449 now $299 @ Mint Mobile
Mint Mobile is talking the same $150 off the cost of the Pixel 6a, but it’s also including a deal on wireless service. Pay for six months of coverage from the discount carrier and you get an additional six months for free. Six months of Mint’s 4GB data plan adds another $90 to the cost, giving you a great midrange phone plus a full year of wireless coverage for $389.

Google Pixel 7: was $599 now $499 @ Google
If you don’t need a telephoto lens or 120Hz refresh rate, then look to the Pixel 7, which is $100 off. At this price, there is nothing better, hands down. With Tensor G2, incredible cameras, and a great screen, you have yourself a wonderful phone for $499.

Google Pixel 7 Pro: was $899 now $749 @ Google
If you’re looking for the best camera on an Android phone, then the Pixel 7 Pro is it. The triple camera system is fantastic, easily matching or outpacing the best from Apple. The Tensor G2 chipset sports a lot of upgrades, too. All in all, the Pixel 7 Pro is one of the best Android phones, especially for this killer price.

Motorola

Moto G Power (2022): was $249 now $169 @ Amazon

Budget-conscious buyers may want to take a look at the Moto G Power (2022). Not only is it dirt cheap, but it lasts a really long time on a charge. Sure, it lacks most of the bells and whistles of more expensive phones, but it can go for a long time.

Moto G Stylus (2022): was $299 now $179 @ Amazon

Motorola offers a stylus experience for less, and this year’s model is currently on sale for over $100 off. The Moto G Stylus (2022) isn’t the most powerful phone around, but it offers that handwriting ideal and great battery life.

Moto G Power (2021): was $249 now $129 @ Amazon
On the more affordable side, the Moto G Power (2021) has also seen a slight discount ahead of Black Friday. This is the phone that lasted for an incredibly long time in our battery life testing. Just be aware that Moto announced a new version of the G Power for 2022 with the same big battery. However, the 2021 offers better overall performance and is the better value. 

Moto G Stylus (2021): was $299 now $149 @ Amazon
If you want a stylus experience for less, then look no further than the Moto G Stylus (2021). With a built-in pen for notes and art, you also get 128GB of storage and four cameras. It’s not the most powerful phone out there, but it’s meant for stylus lovers on a budget. 

OnePlus

OnePlus 10 Pro: was $799 now $549 @ Best Buy
OnePlus’ latest flagship is already well priced, but this discount makes it extra appealing. We love this phone for its battery life, strong cameras and excellent display, and no doubt you would too if you take advantage of this offer. Amazon offers the same phone for the same discounted price too.

OnePlus 10T: was $649 now $599 @ OnePlus
OnePlus put out a T series phone after taking a year off. This one focuses on being a better gaming device than the OnePlus 10 Pro with its newer Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset. It features other downgrades from its Pro brother, but it’s still a good phone, especially for this price.

OnePlus Nord N20 5G: was $299 now $229 @ Amazon
An already cheap phone gets even cheaper, thanks to a $70 discount on the OnePlus Nord N20 at Amazon. While a device this cheap has its limitations, the Nord N20 is still our favorite phone for less than $300, thanks to its beautiful design and solid battery life.

Black Friday phone deals — how to find the best sales

Every year, phones high and low go on sale for Black Friday. Sometimes they’re unlocked, other times they have some carrier deal attached to them. Either way, this is one of the best times of the year to buy a new phone. 

Samsung: We usually see big sales from Samsung, as you may have noticed already. From last year’s flagships to this year’s affordable options, Samsung typically offers nice discounts on Black Friday. However, keep in mind that some of Samsung’s Black Friday phone deals will require you to trade-in an older handset. 

Motorola: Motorola is another player in Black Friday phone deals arena. While the company doesn’t play in the big leagues like Samsung, it does offer slight discounts on its more popular, affordable devices.  Many of these deals can be found at Amazon.

iPhone: Apple is usually pretty stingy with iPhone deals unless it’s on older models. Don’t expect to see wild sales on the new iPhone 14 series, but the iPhone 13 and iPhone SE 2022 have all seen discounts in one place or another. The real place to get a good deal on an iPhone is through a carrier, often with BOGO or trade-in deals. 

Should I buy a phone on Black Friday?

For the most part, this is one of the better times to buy a phone, unlocked or tied to a carrier. Samsung has stellar deals with trade-ins, some carriers have great offers, and you can find some decent sales on Amazon or Best Buy. If you’ve been holding off on a new phone for 2022, now’s a good time to upgrade.

How do I get the best Black Friday phone deals?

It can take a bit of searching, especially sifting through substandard or deceptive sales, but it’s easiest if you know what phone you’re looking for. Take the Galaxy S22 for example. You could search Amazon or Best Buy to see if there’s a deal or sale, or you can check with your carrier (or one you want to switch to). Sometimes, the phone makers also have special deals, like Samsung or Apple (usually requiring a trade-in).

Do I have to trade-in my old phone?

No, nothing says you have to, but you’ll often lose out on the savings. You could try to sell it secondhand to recoup some of the costs of purchasing the new phone (especially if you buy unlocked), and you can sometimes get more cash than the trade-in deals the carriers or stores offer. That, however, requires more footwork and effort on your part and only takes away the sting of the new phone’s cost in the long run. So it all depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re ready to say goodbye to your old phone, it’s by far easier to trade it in or hand it down to a friend or family member.
