Set up and use Bluetooth accessories on iPhone

Bluetooth connectivity lets you use third-party devices such as wireless keyboards, headphones, speakers, car kits, game controllers, and more with iPhone.

iPhone must be within 10 meters of the Bluetooth device.

Pair with headphones, car kit, game controller or other Bluetooth device

  1. Follow the instructions that came with the device to put the device into discovery mode.

    To pair with AirPods, see the instructions for your model in the Pairing and Connecting section of the AirPods User Guide.

  2. On iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth, turn on Bluetooth, then tap the device name.

With Siri Eyes Free (supported in some vehicles), you can use your voice to control iPhone functions without looking at or touching it. Use Bluetooth to pair your iPhone with your car (follow the instructions in your car’s owner’s manual if necessary). To turn on Siri, press and hold the voice command button on the steering wheel until the Siri tone sounds. Then make a request.

Wireless game controller setup

Once paired with a compatible game controller, you can set it up for supported games from Apple Arcade and the App Store.

  1. Go to Settings > General > Game Controller.

  2. Touch the buttons you want to change.

  3. To customize them for a specific app, tap the add app button.

Note. Apple Arcade availability may vary by country or region.

Play audio from iPhone on Bluetooth audio device

  1. On iPhone, open an audio listening app (such as the Music app), then select what you want to enable.

  2. Tap , then select a Bluetooth device.

    During audio playback, you can change the playback location on the lock screen or Control Center.

Playback slider is displayed on iPhone when the device is no longer within Bluetooth range.

For information about protecting your hearing from loud sound when listening through headphones with iPhone, see Using the headphone sound exposure level features on iPhone.

WARNING. For important information about preventing hearing loss and preventing attention loss that could result in a hazardous situation, see Important Safety Information for iPhone.

Bypass a Bluetooth device for calls

To use the iPhone receiver or speaker for phone calls, do any of the following:

  • Answer a call by tapping the iPhone screen.

  • During a call, tap Sound and select iPhone or Speakerphone.

  • Turn off the Bluetooth device, unpair it, or move it out of range.

  • Open “Settings”, tap “Bluetooth” and turn off the “Bluetooth” function.

Unpairing a Bluetooth device

Go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the info button next to the device name, then select Forget this device.

If the list of devices is not displayed, check that Bluetooth is turned on.

Tapping the Forget This Device button for AirPods automatically deletes them from other devices signed in with the same Apple ID.

Disconnect from Bluetooth devices

To quickly disconnect from all Bluetooth devices without turning off Bluetooth, open Control Center and tap the button.

For more information about Bluetooth privacy settings on iPhone, see the Apple Support article If an app asks you to access your device’s Bluetooth. If you’re having trouble connecting to your Bluetooth device, see the Apple Support article If you can’t connect your Bluetooth accessory to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Using certain accessories with iPhone may affect wireless performance. Not all iOS or iPadOS accessories are fully compatible with iPhone. Turning on Airplane Mode may eliminate audio interference between iPhone and the accessory. Changing the orientation or location of iPhone and the connected accessory may improve wireless performance.

Driving a private car is already a pleasant experience. And there is nothing better than doing it with music as well. But usually all your favorite tracks are in the phone memory or online service. Below is how to connect an iPhone to the radio and enjoy trips to your favorite playlist.

How to connect an iPhone to the radio using an AUX cable

The easiest way is to purchase an AUX cable for iPhone in the car. The device is simple: on one side there is a standard 3.5 mm jack that needs to be inserted into the headphone jack in the phone, and on the other side there is a similar 3.5 mm jack for the radio.

iPhone connection to car multimedia system

Using the AUX cable for the iPhone, the latter becomes a sound source, and the car’s audio system acts as an amplifier. That is, everything is the same as when connecting a smartphone to any other speaker.

However, this connection method has a couple of drawbacks:

  • you cannot switch songs and scroll through playlists using the radio buttons;
  • phone runs out of power during playback;
  • iPhone aux cable interferes with access to the backstage and buttons on the center console;
  • to answer the call, you have to disconnect the gadget.

What the AUX cable looks like

Please note! Aux-wire connector for car in iPhone 7 and above is not provided due to the company’s transition to wireless headphones. That is, the smartphone simply does not have the right socket. With the rest (iPhone 6, 5 S, SE and older) there will be no problems.

Connection via aux cable will not cause problems. No internal settings need to be made. Just connect your phone and turn on the music. The sound will automatically play through the car’s audio system. The radio will work similarly.

You can use this connection method on the latest versions of iPhone if you purchase a special Type-C adapter to 3.5 mm jack. The adapter is inserted into the charging socket, and the AUX cable is inserted into it.

How to connect an iPhone to the radio in the car via USB

Android Auto – what it is, how to connect it to the car

USB, you need to make sure that such a port is provided at all. Most manufacturers, for example, Pioneer, JVC, FarCar, equip their devices with the appropriate port by default.

Connecting an iPhone to the Pioneer radio via USB

This connection method has several advantages:

  • playback can be controlled through the interface of the radio or buttons on the multi-steering wheel;
  • iPhone charges all the time while the engine is on;
  • can connect any iPhone model without using adapters via Lightning, 30-Pin, Type-C cords.

Please note! Many users, when connected in this way, are faced with the fact that the radio does not see the iPhone via USB, while charging is carried out through the wire.

The latter is actually a common case, but there is no device incompatibility. Just before turning on music from an iPhone in a car via USB, you need to:

  1. Go to “Settings”.
  2. Go to the “USB connection” section.
  3. Click on the “Data transfer” option.

Unfortunately, this operation will have to be performed every time you connect. Well, the cord will still cause discomfort, which cannot be said about the options below.

Now about wireless technologies. Bluetooth has also become a mandatory attribute of car audio systems in recent years. So, before trying to connect in this way, you should open the technical documentation and make sure that the existing radio has this function.

Please note! If the option is not available, but there is a 3.5 mm jack or a USB port, you can purchase a separate module that will pick up the signal from the phone.

If there is, then the detailed instructions are as follows:

  1. Make sure that the iPhone does not need to install updates.
  2. Go to “Settings” or activate the “curtain”.
  3. Enable Bluetooth.
  4. Further, depending on the radio model, find the “Sound source” section in its settings (the name may differ).
  5. Select the “Phone” option.
  6. Wait for gadgets to pair.
  7. If the system asks for a password, enter any number combination, such as “1234”.

One of the disadvantages of this method is the inability to charge an iPhone. Moreover, with active bluetooth, the battery sits down faster. Signal interruption is also possible due to the nature of the wireless technology.

Connecting elm327 bluetooth to iPhone

How to connect your phone to LG TV via Wi-Fi

In addition to the above adapter, which many people touch while driving a car, you can use a more convenient bluetooth device – Elm327 for iPhone.

Please note! Specifically for an iPhone, you need to purchase an adapter with the “mini” prefix of the 1.5 series (and even better 1.4) with bluetooth 4.0 or higher, otherwise they simply won’t be able to interact.

Initially, the device was designed to connect to the on-board computer to diagnose the vehicle’s software. To do this, an application is downloaded to the phone that displays all information about technical characteristics, malfunctions and errors.

Elm327 is installed in the EBP port under the steering column

To connect Elm 327 mini to iPhone, you need:

  1. Look under the steering column.
  2. Find the corresponding port under elm.
  3. Insert adapter into it.
  4. Download the DashCommand application.
  5. Turn on bluetooth and pair (the adapter lights up).

It remains only to turn on the music on the phone.

To see the technical condition of the car, you additionally need to install the Torque app.

Description of CarPlay function: how to use

This method is suitable for owners of vehicles with an advanced multimedia system and CarPlay function. It initially made sense in the safety of using an iPhone due to constant talking on the phone while driving. All control is carried out by voice through Siri.

Connecting via CarPlay gives you more connectivity between your iPhone and multimedia system

No connection required. If the car supports mobile service, enough on iPhone:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. General section.
  3. Item “CarPlay”.
  4. Followed by Affordable Cars.
  5. The system must write the make of the vehicle. Click on her.

Please note! CarPlay is not available for smartphones below the fifth generation and IOS older than 7.1. The iPad cannot be connected to the multimedia car.

What to do if you can not connect external devices to the audio system

An FM transmitter for the cigarette lighter will come to the rescue.
