How to choose a camera for video: camera or video camera? | Articles | Photo, video, optics
We live in a time when you don’t have to use the latest generation of cameras to get good quality photos. Accordingly, sales of digital cameras are not growing. Therefore, a well-implemented video recording function becomes an important component of the success of the camera.
In addition, in photography, with a small investment of funds, most of the classic photography techniques have long been available. At the same time, new devices are emerging that greatly expand the possibilities of video and filming: electronic stabilizers and quadrocopters can be cited as examples.
So, on the one hand, the function of video recording in cameras is becoming more and more relevant. On the other hand, there are “classic” video cameras that are not going to disappear anywhere.
What to choose for filming? We will try to answer this question in our article.
Cameras
Let’s start with the fact that cameras are “adapted” for maximum image detail. Even on compact cameras, the photo resolution is more than 20 megapixels, that is, more than 5000 horizontal dots. The maximum video resolution on modern amateur devices is 4K, that is, 3840 × 2160 (with an aspect ratio of 16:9).
However, the entire area of the camera’s matrix is not always used for video shooting. So, for many, the disappointment was the fact that the recently released Canon EOS 5D Mark IV uses part of the crop factor for video recording, while it is 1.64 ×, which not only worsens image quality, but also changes the viewing angle of all optics .
Canon EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR
Sony mirrorless cameras have the best video performance. For example, the Sony A7R II and A7S II shoot 4K video without artificial limitations and have a full-frame sensor with excellent performance.
Sony A7S II Mirrorless Camera
So, top cameras have a large digital sensor. This means that the image from them is characterized by a shallow depth of field.
As for specialized video recording devices, they are no less diverse. The first thing that comes to mind is to give a strict classification of video cameras. However, we will take a different path – consider specific examples, and then select the criteria by which you need to purchase a particular device. So, let’s look at what different manufacturers offer.
Canon
This company produces a wide range of devices from entry-level camcorders to cinema cameras. But the largest part is reportage video cameras.
For example, the Canon XF305 has an 18x optical zoom, three small sensors with a resolution of 2.07 megapixels.
Canon XF305
MPEG-2 video recording indicates that the files produced with this camera are intended for post-processing. At the same time, these cameras can produce an uncompressed video stream, several of these cameras can be connected to one recording device, there are XLR connectors for recording an audio signal. The camera settings also allow you to choose any frame rate from 12 to 50. Thus, we see a device designed. including for live video broadcasts.
Another typical example is the Canon EOS C500. This camera has a Super 35mm sensor: this name clearly has a connection with the name of the popular film stock. And indeed, the matrix here is designed for the same optics that films for cinemas were shot on. That is, this is a camera with a large, even by the standards of photographic equipment, matrix size. Obviously, the camera, in fact, is designed for shooting movies.
Canon EOS C500
The effective resolution of this model is 4096 x 2160, that is, the picture is even more stretched horizontally than in 16:9, which once again confirms the purpose of the device (shooting for display on a large wide cinema screen).
The Canon EOS C500 uses the Canon EF interchangeable lens system. This allows you to use both conventional lenses from SLR cameras and specialized cine optics.
A kind of intermediate option is the Canon XC15 camera.
Canon XC15
It records in 4K (though 16:9), but has a fixed lens with a 10x zoom and an inch sensor, as in compact cameras and mirrorless cameras. Perhaps the Canon XC15 is best suited for those who do not intend to shoot films, but want to get better quality than reportage cameras like the Canon XF305.
Sony
The cameras of this manufacturer are also presented in a wide range, Sony has long conquered the market of television equipment (remember the Betacam format) and strongly presses on the filming niche.
Sony makes a huge number of reportage cameras like the above Canon XF305, and even more “fancy” models. We will not list them, since one such model is already known to us, and as part of the review, more original devices than these utilitarian “workhorses” are of interest.
Among the variety of Sony camcorders, for example, the Sony PXW-FS7 camera attracts attention, which has a Super 35mm matrix, uses Sony E lenses, but at the same time has ergonomics close to reportage cameras.
Sony PXW-FS7
The manufacturer itself positions it as an ideal camera for documentary shooting, and we can agree with him. The only drawback, perhaps, is the lack of a wide fleet of video lenses for this system.
Blackmagic
This manufacturer is already less known in wide circles, as it produces only video equipment and video processing software.
In particular, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is compatible with Micro Four Thirds lenses and has a 12.48mm x 7.02mm Super 16mm (narrow, amateur film) sensor.
Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera
It can be called the most compact cinema camera in the world, as it has the form factor of a typical mirrorless camera. However, the size of the matrix here is such that Peter Jackson is unlikely to use it.
The flagship of the manufacturer is the “monster” Blackmagic URSA. The manufacturer calls this camera revolutionary: indeed, it is unique in its own way.
Blackmagic URSA
The fact is that this camera has a replaceable module that includes a matrix and a lens mount. Thus, different filming standards and optics systems can be used on one instance of the device.
For example, one module allows the use of Canon EF lenses, while the other uses the Arri PL standard, the most common in film equipment. The purpose of using different matrix sizes is to “adjust” to different formats of film production.
Red
The company debuted in 2007 with the Red One camera, immediately becoming one of the pioneers of digital cinematography.
The cameras of this manufacturer are made according to the modular principle: the mounts and connectors for them are removable and are purchased at the request of the user. Without all this body kit, they look like a metal box with a lens mount. The resolution on the top Red WEAPON 8K camera, as the name implies, is about 8000 horizontal dots, that is, 35 megapixels (and yes, they are used when shooting video). This is four times more than 4K.
Red WEAPON 8K
The only downside to these cameras is the high price, but no one expects low cost for blockbuster equipment.
General Guidelines and Selection Criteria
The above information on the different cameras is of course not exhaustive, but gives an idea of the overall market picture.
So, the first thing to start from when choosing is the budget. This is obvious, since the price range here is very high.
The second is the type of survey. If this is a staged shooting, you can use cameras with a large matrix, manual focus. With a reasonable budget – this is a camera with interchangeable lenses, with an unlimited budget – specialized movie cameras.
For reportage shooting or broadcasting, it is better to use reportage video cameras and television cameras, respectively (there are no budget solutions here, of course).
However, amateur video journalism now exists and is even commercially successful. These are all kinds of video blogs, reviews, test drives published on the Internet, mainly on Youtube. Here, cameras with interchangeable lenses can be used, but solutions with a fixed lens and a sufficient size of the matrix are also quite suitable. For example, even the compact pocket camera Sony CyberShot DSC-RX100 M4.
Sony CyberShot DSC-RX100 M4 Compact Camera
The third criterion for choosing a camcorder is the video format. As a rule, specialized camcorders produce files adapted for post-processing, and in serious cases, the recording goes to an external recorder. If the video is recorded for publication on the Internet, and it will be compressed, no color correction is planned – the “regular” codecs XAVC, MPEG-4 and so on are enough. In this case, the video can be immediately viewed on a computer and posted on YouTube, on social networks.
Conclusions
In answer to the question posed in the title of the article, we can say that cameras can become a full-fledged replacement for a video camera in several cases:
- you do not need specific standards used in filming and television
- you don’t need ultra-high resolution video
- you can get by with photographic lenses
Note that still cameras are relatively inexpensive compared to camcorders with a comparable sensor size.
It is worth paying close attention to the fact that lenses used for photography may have the following disadvantages:
- Focus Breathing – “focus breathing”.
