Geotab Case Studies
Case studies are analyses of persons, events, decisions, periods, projects, policies, institutions, or other systems that are studied holistically by one or more methods. The case that is the subject of the inquiry will be an instance of a class of phenomena that provides an analytical frame — an object — within which the study is conducted and which the case illuminates and explicates.” According to J. Creswell, data collection in a case study occurs over a “sustained period of time.

What our clients are saying…
-
A GPS logger simply logs the position of the device at regular intervals in its internal memory. GPS loggers have either a memory card slot, or internal flash memory and a USB port.
Some act as a USB flash drive. This allows downloading of the track log data for further analyzing in a computer.
- A GPS receiver and a mobile phone sit side-by-side in the same box, powered by the same battery. At regular intervals, the phone sends a text message via SMS, containing the data from the GPS receiver.
- I just wanted to say that we really like the GPS fleet tracking system. We like that it is easy to use and it works well. What we like most is the amount money that we have saved in gas costs and labour costsIqbal Mahmood A-1 Towing, Auto Express & Expediting / President

Malfunctions in navigation systems caused by increased security measures in large cities, create difficulties for the operation of a variety of services – from taxi services to grocery delivery. Should we say goodbye to the availability of geolocation or is it something that can be adjusted?

Today, there is a whole range of navigation systems in the world: global European Galileo and Chinese Beidou, as well as regional French DORIS, Japanese QZSS and Indian IRNSS, but the most significant are American GPS and Russian GLONASS. First of all, due to the number of satellites in orbit and the territory they cover with high-precision navigation. At the same time, due to a larger number of orbital planes (three versus six for GPS) and a larger number of satellites (twenty-five versus thirty-two for GPS), the accuracy of the American system is somewhat higher. On average, the GLONASS measurement error is 4-6 m, the GPS error is from 2 to 4 m. At the same time, in countries where GPS ground stations are installed – in the USA, Canada, China and Japan – the deviation does not exceed 1-2 m.
But for the operation of user services, such as delivery services, carsharing or fitness bracelets, all these systems are equally acceptable. At the same time, most modern devices, such as the iPhone, can work with all navigation systems simultaneously. If you go to the page of any Apple smartphone older than 2010, you can see information about the support of all navigation systems. It was in 2010 that Qualcomm released the world’s first chips that support GPS, GLONASS and other systems. Following such a chip was released by Broadcom.
At the same time, even in the current conditions, there is no question of removing support for the Russian navigation system or restricting Russia’s access to GPS navigation, said Eldar Murtazin, a leading analyst at Mobile Research Group.
“There were such fears a year ago. But it is quite difficult to kick us out of these chips, and we can turn off a lot in response. Therefore, GLONASS support is preserved even in new chips,” the expert notes.
So why does the navigation stop working?
For a start, navigation may stop working in different ways. A scenario that has long been known to Muscovites, when, while in the city center, the navigator suddenly showed that you were at Vnukovo Airport, in Minsk, or even in the North Sea. This is how systems that replace the navigation service signal work. “For this, special transmitters are placed on the ground. It works with a civilian signal that is transmitted in unencrypted form,” explains the interlocutor of RG in a company developing navigation equipment.
At the same time, says Murtazin, large companies such as Yandex are working to track such phenomena and correct them. “If suddenly there was a sharp shift in coordinates, they can correct it in the software. They are working on it, although there are no practical results yet. The idea is that they control both sides of the service, and if a taxi or carsharing car suddenly moves sharply at least 100 -150 meters, this means that the jammer is working and at the service level they can transmit an almanac with satellite coordinates and adjust the location. Well, those who use drones, conditionally, will not be able to do this,” he explains.
The second scenario involves jamming at the level of radio frequencies used by navigation systems. Usually it looks like that during the movement the navigator stops moving along the route and is “lost”. Usually such jamming works on GPS navigation. And it, due to the fact that the interference is spread by the transmitter, is very local, explains Murtazin. “That is, it cannot work on the entire territory of Russia. If we draw an analogy, we can recall how various foreign “voices” were jammed during the Soviet Union. Everything depended on the power of the transmitter and the jammer,” the expert says.
At the same time, the fundamental difference between modern gadgets and radios from the 70s is that they work with different navigation systems. And if the default GPS navigation stops working, then the system starts looking for other satellites. This may take about five minutes – the time when the navigator looks “lost”. During this time, the so-called “cold” start occurs and the gadget detects GLONASS or Chinese Beidou satellites. In addition, as Yandex explains, for example, user devices can also rely on information from terrestrial sources – Wi-Fi access points or cell towers.
So even if it becomes necessary to turn off GPS over the territory of Russia, this will have a minimal impact on the operation of user devices and services. Only very old or very cheap gadgets can suffer. They usually only support GPS. At the same time, the probability of such a shutdown is very small, believes Roman Gusarov, editor-in-chief of the Avia.ru portal. According to Gusarov, it is possible to turn off some of the satellites that are located over Russia, but this will distort the location data and disrupt work in countries adjacent to Russia.
This is also difficult because the GPS satellites are not stationary, which means that you will have to turn off the satellites at the time of flight over Russia. In addition, this will leave neighboring countries such as China and India without GPS, which means that it is unlikely that anyone will seriously dare to do this.

GPS will catch dark matter | SINP MGU
Author: Pavel Kotlyar, gazeta. ru
Source: http://www.gazeta.ru/science/2014/11/19_a_6306261.shtml
American and Canadian physicists of Russian origin figured out how to catch the mysterious dark matter using GPS. “Gazeta.Ru” figured out how and why you can use navigation satellites for other purposes.
Two Russian physicists now working in the West have proposed an elegant way to capture the mysterious dark matter that is constantly eluding scientists. If they turn out to be right, then no expensive devices will need to be built to fix it – satellites already launched into orbit will do everything.
Dark matter is a mysterious substance that betrays its presence in the Universe only by its gravitational effect on light and ordinary, baryonic matter. And that’s basically all we know about her. Dark matter deflects light rays, forming a kind of lens. If this substance did not exist in galaxies, then the stars would move more slowly than we see from observations. In search of dark matter particles, scientists are forced to resort to some assumptions, for example, that the carriers of dark matter are the so-called WIMPs – weakly interacting massive particles. However, since these particles have not yet been detected in the laboratory, scientists continue to build other hypotheses about the nature of dark matter.
We see its manifestation only on huge, galactic scales and more, so we do not know whether it consists of individual particles or extended objects. MIPT graduate Andrey Derevyanko, who works at the University of Nevada together with a graduate of Novosibirsk State University – theorist Maxim Pospelov from the University of Victoria (Canada), believe
that dark matter can manifest itself as a kind of fifth force, in addition to the known four fundamental interactions – gravitational, electromagnetic, strong and weak.
According to this theory (the so-called topological dark matter), clots of dark matter, flying through ordinary matter, shift the values of the main fundamental interactions, for example, the fine structure constant α, the masses of protons and electrons. This must inevitably slightly shift the energy levels in atoms and molecules, which can already be fixed experimentally. For example, using high-precision atomic clocks.
The idea is simple. It is known that the solar system, rotating around the center of our galaxy, flies in space at a speed of 300 km/s. Rushing through clots of dark matter, atomic clocks must either speed up or slow down, physicists say.
And here the main task is to single out from all such anomalies those that propagate in space at a speed of 300 km/s.
GPS or GLONASS satellites are ideal, constellations of satellites already in orbit with accurate atomic clocks on board. “Nothing else in the solar system travels at 300 km/s. And this is the whole point, ”Derevyanko, a specialist in atomic clocks, explained to Gazeta.Ru.
A bunch of dark matter, having passed one satellite, knocks down its clock, then flies by the Earth and reaches the opposite satellite in about three minutes, also shifting the chronometer. Thus, scientists are left to isolate a three-minute correlation in the deviations of atomic clocks synchronized with each other, going to a network of 30 currently operating GPS satellites.
