Seeing a car monitor or a portable DVD player on sale today, no one is surprised and no longer points the finger. Somehow, under the guise, but quickly enough, this consumer electronics even got to domestic cars. Say, today on the street you can easily see the “nine” or “twelfth”, equipped with such devices.

Today we will get acquainted with a new color monitor and DVD player from the well-known American company Saturn High-Tech Group. So don’t be too embarrassed by the fact that both the Videovox VMA-700S monitor and the Videovox DVR-450 player are not produced under the Prology trademark. Videovox is a mass-produced automotive and portable video equipment from Saturn High-Tech Group.

Equipment

Traditionally, the monitors of this company are well packaged to prevent any possible damage during transportation. VMA-700S is no exception – the monitor is covered with polyethylene and packed in cardboard.

Together with the monitor, a compact remote control was found in the box, an adapter cable for three RCA connectors for audio / video inputs and a power input connector, a network adapter, a power cable for connecting to the car’s cigarette lighter socket, a stand with a swivel connector, a frame for attaching to the headrest, dressed on the monitor, as well as a detailed user manual in Russian.

Design and appearance Videovox VMA-700S

The monitor is made in full accordance with the style of other similar Videovox and Prology products. In fact, the gray plastic case has the same contours and the same design as the other models we’ve reviewed before. A distinctive feature of the VMA-700S is its interestingly designed control keypad. Rather, the design of the buttons itself is interesting – some of them are oval, some are triangular, and the Power button, like the IR receiver, generally has a teardrop shape. Buttons of different shapes are easier to remember, and after a while of working with the monitor, you won’t have to read the markings above each of them. There are only seven buttons – Power, Menu, a button for switching video inputs, two buttons for turning the image horizontally and vertically, as well as two menu control buttons that, in combination, act as volume controls.

When connected to a monitor, for example, a DVD player, the sound from the latter can go not only through the car’s external audio system, but also through the speaker built into the rear plane. However, if the monitor is installed in a headrest or other enclosed space, the built-in speaker will inevitably be covered. Numerous ventilation openings are also located in the rear part, which will also be closed when the monitor is “deaf” installed. This is a clear disadvantage of the device.

Between the ventilation holes there is a metal connector for attaching the articulated leg, as well as a short cable with a plug, to which the adapter cable with power connectors, as well as audio and video inputs, is connected.

Like other models, VMA-700S has two main installation methods. The first installation method is purely automotive – installation in the headrest. In this case, you will have to “pick it up” a little. A plastic frame is attached to the resulting recess with screws. The monitor just snaps into place. As mentioned above, although this method is more aesthetic for the rear seat passengers of the car, it has its drawbacks, mentioned above.

To the front panel of the car, the frame can generally be simply screwed to any convenient free space, if any. In this case, you can independently think over the ventilation of the device.

The second installation method is less suitable for a car, although there may be options here. The metal connector on the back of the VMA-700S accepts the articulated leg we already know from the Prology line of monitors.

The leg has a sticky base, thanks to which it can be fairly firmly fixed on any, even inclined, smooth surface. In this embodiment, the monitor can also be used somewhere in the country by connecting it to a 200V network.

The remote control included in the kit is no different from the remote controls we have already seen for Prology monitors, so we will not dwell on it in detail – it is ultra compact, but has a sufficient number of buttons for full control. It’s just a pity that because of its ultra modest size it can easily get lost.

Working with Videovox VMA-700S

The monitor menu is very easy to navigate and has only three pages: Image, Timer and a special settings page. However, this is typical for other similar models of Prology car monitors.

On the Image page, you can adjust brightness, contrast, and saturation. The ranges of change, both in contrast and in brightness, turned out to be very large. Alas, on some models of car monitors, you have to see too narrow ranges of changes in these values, which is critical for difficult conditions in a car interior (light can be blinding or completely absent). VMA-700S users will have no problem with this.

The “timer” menu allows you not only to set the internal clock, but also to set the time to automatically turn off or turn on the monitor. In addition, it is possible to set an alarm clock – at the specified time, the monitor will turn on the screen.

select a color coding system, select a video signal source, select a menu language (English or Russian), and set one of three screen formats, depending on the video recording – 16:9, 16:9L or 4:3. It is noteworthy that the manufacturer thought in advance that this function could be used too often, and equipped the remote control with a button for quickly switching formats.

In terms of color reproduction quality, this monitor can be called a strong middle peasant among the models we have already tested. In simple terms, you don’t need more for a car monitor, because you are not going to, say, work with graphics on it.
