Modern technology has enabled great advances in comfort and technology, and it’s now possible to watch DVDs and TV in your car to entertain children and impress passengers. Installing a TV tuner can allow access to digital TV signals that can be viewed in the car. These tuners require either an already installed monitor or the purchase of a kit that includes the monitor and receiver.
This article will cover how to install a TV tuner into your vehicle if you already have an existing monitor setup.
Part 1 of 1: Installing a TV tuner
- Ratchet set
- TV tuner kit with installation manual
Step 1: Pick out a TV tuner kit. When purchasing a tuner kit, make sure it includes all the needed materials for installation, such as wiring and instructions.
It’s a good idea to check to make sure that the kit will work with the existing monitor system already installed in the vehicle. This may require purchasing a kit by the same brand as the monitor.
Step 2: Disconnect the battery. The first step will be to disconnect the negative battery cable. This is done to avoid voltage spikes and to protest the installer.
Make sure the negative cable is placed in a way that it cannot touch the terminal while you work.
Step 3: Determine the placement of the TV tuner. Next you will need to decide where the TV tuner will go. It needs to be in a protected dry environment where the cables can be conveniently connected to it. A common place is under a seat or in the trunk area.
Once an area is chosen, it should be prepped for installation. The installation manual may have specific location instructions based on the make and model of your vehicle.
Step 4: Install the TV tuner. Now that the position is ready, install the TV tuner into the space chosen. The unit must be secured in some way, whether it be tied down with zip ties or screwed into place.
How the unit is mounted will vary from car to car and kit to kit.
Step 5: Hook up the TV tuner to a power source. The TV tuner will need to run off of the vehicle’s 12 volt power to work.
Locate the vehicle’s fuse block that contains the auxiliary power fuse. Unless the instructions say otherwise, this is the fuse that will be used.
Hook up the wiring to the the fuse and run it back to the TV tuner.
Step 6: Mount the IR receiver. The IR receiver is the part of the system that picks up the signal. This will be mounted somewhere where it can reach signal.
The dash is the most common location. If the installation manual has an alternative location that should be tried first.
The receiver wires should then be run to the the tuner unit and plugged in.
Step 7: Connect the tuner to the monitor. Run the audio/video wires to the existing monitor and connect them to the appropriate inputs.
The wires should be hidden as best as possible.
Step 8: Test the unit. Reinstall the negative battery cable that was disconnected previously. Once power is restored to the vehicle, turn on the monitor first.
After the monitor is turned on, turn on the TV tuner and test it out.
Now that you have the TV tuner installed and working in your car, there is no excuse not to take the car on a nice road trip. With the TV tuner, hours of entertainment will ensue.

How to install a TV in a car
- Choosing the right TV
- Installation and wiring
A DVD player is a pretty good solution for watching videos during a long trip. However, as practice shows, enjoying a full-fledged viewing of your favorite movie while sitting in the back seats is not an easy task. Therefore, more and more people are opting for car LCD TVs as they are a great alternative to a DVD player. TVs with the ability to watch video directly from a “flash drive” connected to them are especially popular.
Choosing the right TV
The car TV should be of such a size that it can be easily mounted in the back wall of the headrest. The best option is a TV with an additional plastic case.
The plastic housing allows you to securely fix the device in the headrest, but if necessary, you can even glue it. Another advantage of a TV in a plastic case is that it can be rotated in different directions, thus choosing the best viewing angle for you.
The TV requires a three meter video cable (tulip type), two power cables and a video signal splitter.
In order to mount the TV, it is necessary to make a cross cut (diagonally) on the back surface of the headrest, which matches the dimensions of the plastic case of the device. To ensure that the head restraint inner padding does not interfere during installation, it must be removed. For optimal fixation, the TV cabinet can be screwed or glued to the base of the headrest.
Installation and wiring
To provide power for car TVs, you can use a special adapter, older models can be connected to the cigarette lighter socket.
TVs are connected to the player using a video cable (yellow connectors). One end of this wire connects directly to the DVD video output and the other end to a video splitter. The audio cable does not need to be connected to the TV, since its standard speakers have a fairly good sound quality.
Once the devices are connected, care must be taken to “hide” the wires. To do this, they can be stretched under the seat trim and around the cabin.

How to connect a car TV with your own hands
Few people remember the times when only wealthy people could afford a TV. Today, such a “miracle” of technology is an integral element of every home, and in some houses there is a unit in almost all rooms. During their technical development, TVs have come a long way from large devices to compact, flat screens of various sizes, which practically do not take up space in the house, and fit perfectly into any interior. Watching TV programs and favorite movies is an excellent opportunity for many to pass the time and escape from everyday problems. For busy people who have transport, are in constant motion, a great alternative to watching TV at home is to install a TV in the car. This option does not apply to democratic solutions, however, it already has its adherents among car owners. In this article, we will tell you how to install a portable TV in a car, focusing on the most convenient and practical places for mounting it.
Installing and setting up a TV in a car.
The need for installation and installation features of a TV tuner
Until recently, a TV set in a car allowed drivers to realize the possibility of watching exclusively analog broadcasting, which has significant drawbacks: reception of only a few channels, poor image quality, no picture or its broadcast with noise in saturated infrastructure areas or when you turn on the TV in high-speed driving mode. Such shortcomings called into question the rationality of installing a car TV in transport. At the present time, the problem with the quality of television broadcasting in a vehicle is being solved by acquiring a receiver designed to be able to watch TV with decent performance, a variety of channels, in digital format. Buying and installing a tuner allows you to solve the problem of broadcast interruptions, the number of received channels, and the variety of receivers on the modern market authorizes the possibility of making a choice based on the type of video system in the car and the number of monitors to be installed.
Professionals recommend installing the purchased car tuner in specialized service centers, however, its installation is not characterized by significant difficulties, which allows you to do the work on your own. The choice in favor of installing the receiver in a service center should be given to the owners of new cars: the owner will be able to receive an official certificate of installation of the device, which allows to avoid removing the car from the warranty. Let’s consider in detail how to connect the tuner in a car with your own hands, presenting step-by-step installation instructions:
- Initially, before carrying out work involving intervention in the vehicle’s electrical wiring, it is worth disconnecting the battery power.
- Select the location where the digital set-top box will be located. Often it is mounted in the glove box or under it. When choosing the location of the device, it is important to focus on the absence of the likelihood of moisture and dirt entering the area of \u200b\u200bits placement.
- Using the fasteners supplied with the receiver, fix the device in the place provided for it.
- The device can be powered from the fuse box by connecting the cable to the twelve volt auxiliary socket.
- It is better to place an infrared unit designed to receive a signal from the remote control in an accessible place so that it is convenient to turn on the device from anywhere in the car.
- If the receiver is equipped with antennas, they must be firmly mounted on the windshield inside the car, laying the wires from the tuner to the antenna.
It remains only to decide on the model of the LCD monitor, install the TV in the car, connect it through a digital tuner and watch the desired programs and TV shows in perfect quality. To make the whole structure look presentable, all the wires used when installing the tuner and connecting screens should be hidden under the vehicle’s skin.
Location and installation of monitors in the car interior
The market for automotive products, including additional equipment for cars, is very diverse, and before choosing a specific model of a monitor for vehicles, you should decide on the preferred location for the car owner. The most common locations for installing a monitor in vehicles are sun visors, headrests, and the ceiling area of a car. Each accommodation option has both advantages and disadvantages. For example, installing a monitor in the headrests of the front seats is relevant for car owners who constantly travel with passengers in the back seat, however, viewing even a “glimpse” of an interesting program for the driver is initially excluded. If you want to install the monitor in this way, for ease of use and aesthetic balance of the interior, you will need to buy two screens, and the size of the display is predetermined by the dimensions of the headrests themselves.
The advantage of overhead monitors is a decent range of product selection in terms of display parameters, a wider viewing angle, which authorizes the ability to watch TV even by the driver, although not while driving. Another advantage of such an installation is the ability to fold the monitor to the level with the ceiling, when there is no need to turn on the TV. The least popular for the location of the monitor are sun visors, since monitors of small parameters are installed in them, which reduces the convenience of viewing programs for both passengers and the driver. Only after weighing all the pros and cons, having decided on the device’s reference area for the driver, it’s worth starting to choose it, since this criterion directly affects the monitor model that the car owner needs. For a specific installation location, it is envisaged to purchase a suitable monitor modification. Consider step by step how to connect a TV in a car, focusing on the most popular and convenient places for their location: in the headrests and on the ceiling.
TV headrest mounting
Before buying a TV screen for a car that is going to be installed in the headrest, it is important to measure the dimensions of the headrests themselves so that the display parameters are slightly smaller than the diagonal of the area where the devices are located. Professionals do not recommend installing TVs on the headrest, the dimensions of which exceed the parameters of the upper part of the seat, since any unsuccessful movement of the front passenger or driver can cause mechanical damage to the screen. In addition, a TV screen larger than the headrest of the seat will negatively reflect on the interior of the cabin space. The process of mounting a TV is not particularly difficult, however, it requires accuracy and scrupulousness from the performer, so that the result of the work is not only a success from the technical side, in the functioning of the monitor, but also positioned positively from an aesthetic position. For work, the performer will need, in addition to monitors, the following tools and materials:
- Felt pen or tap.
- Screwdriver set.
- Wiring tape.
- Knife, cutter or other tool with a sharp blade, for cutting a monitor opening.
- Technical adhesive.
After preparing all the necessary materials, you can get to work, relentlessly following the instructions for mounting the TV in the headrest of the car:
- To do this, on the headrest, leaning the screen tightly against it, draw the boundaries of the future opening for the TV.
- Next, you need to remove the head restraint from its regular place, since it will be inconvenient to carry out cutting work directly in the car.
- The upholstery is removed from the headrest, after preliminary making shallow punctures in the corners around the perimeter of the area for installing the screen. This can be done with a regular needle.
- According to the marks, draw an outline of the opening for the TV screen on the headrest and cut out a non-through hole, the depth of which should be equal to the thickness of the TV.
- After trying on the screen, making sure that it “sits” freely in the recess, it is worth making another opening, this time through, to bring the cable from the monitor to the tuner.
- Next task: cut a slot similar to the size of the screen on the headrest upholstery, according to the markup made earlier. You need to cut the hole a little less, leaving about half a centimeter on each side, to wrap the upholstery inward when mounting the TV directly: this approach will hide the cut edges of the upholstery, which will be displayed on the presentability of the installation.
- Next, you need to put the upholstery on the head restraint, wrap its edged ribs inside, after making small cuts at the corners of the opening.
- Fixing the monitor in the seat is carried out using technical glue or reliable double-sided tape. It is important to fix the TV screen securely in order to exclude the possibility of it falling out during the operation of the machine during sudden braking or extreme maneuvering.
To get an image on the TV, all that remains is to connect the cable from the monitor to the tuner, and connect the adapter to the cigarette lighter.
In-ceiling car monitor installation
In-ceiling TV installation is more complex. To install the monitor, the contractor will need to partially dismantle the trim on the ceiling of the car in order to free up the roof area where the screen will be directly installed. Next, you need to start making a plate on which the car ceiling TV will be mounted, or mounting it if it is prepared in advance by the car owner. The size of the plate must correspond to the base of the purchased device, it is made of plywood or metal, and experts tend to the latter option, in order to ensure sufficient stability and reliability of the final design. It is necessary to fix the platinum on the reinforcing ribs of the ceiling with self-tapping screws or screws, acting with extreme caution so as not to make a hole in the roof with fasteners. The base of the TV is attached to the installed plate, using the hardware supplied with the device: the monitor itself will subsequently be connected to it.
The next step is to connect and test the device. The process is carried out according to the instructions of the TV manufacturer, using the wires included in the kit. You can supply power to the device both by connecting wires in the engine compartment, and from the cigarette lighter, after installing a special adapter in it. When connecting electronics, you should be extremely careful, since improperly connected wiring can result not only in a breakdown of the device, but also cause a car to ignite. If you have no experience with electrical wiring, it is better to entrust this work to professionals. After connecting the device, you need to check the functionality of the TV, then disconnect the connectors and start installing the ceiling cladding in a regular place. During the installation process, it will be necessary to make holes in the casing for the installed wires, which implies the need for accurate measurements and scrupulousness so as not to make unnecessary openings and not spoil the ceiling covering.
Final stage of work: connection of disconnected connectors and final check of the effectiveness of the installation. If the work on the installation of the skin was carried out carefully and without haste, then the likelihood of unpleasant precedents, with the lack of operability of the device, is reduced to zero.
