Score: 99/100

Dropping just one point overall, this is a true all-singing, all-dancing carpet cleaning machine. It was effortless to use – just two passes of the machine were enough to remove tough stains – and only left our carpet a little damp after use, while the carpet pile looked restored and lifted.

Its upholstery attachment was effective, all controls were intuitive to use and its handle was comfortable thanks to a soft silicone coating. It is on the bulky side, so you’ll need enough room to store it, but its carry handle will help with manoeuvring.

Another hit from Vax, there wasn’t much we didn’t like about this carpet cleaner; it aced all of our tests. Using the Vax Platinum Carpet Wash, only a few passes over a stain were needed for it to be removed completely. And overall, the carpet looked and felt refreshed.

We found the pre-treatment wand useful too, as it allowed us to target deep stains, while the 4.6-metre hose meant cleaning the stairs was a breeze. A hard floor cleaning tool is also included, which fits easily onto the base of the carpet cleaner and left our hard floor clean and dry. The upholstery attachment also made light work of cleaning sofas and car interiors.

One of the most compact designs on test, the Bissell Hydrowave is a great choice for heavily carpeted homes. We tested it using both its Express Clean and Deep Clean settings. The former fully removed mud and tea stains in two sweeps and the majority of our wine stain, while the later fully removed all stains in one sweep.

The head is slim enough to clean stairs easily too, so you’ll be able to access all carpeted areas of your home. Our only issue was that the cleaning solution comes out in a thin stream, rather than a wide spray, which means it covers less area in one go.

This large carpet cleaner was hard to fault. From the three settings, we found Express Clean was best suited to everyday dirt as it removed stains after a number of sweeps, while Deep Clean and Max Clean banished them with a single sweep. We’d recommend only using Max Clean once or twice a year though to protect your carpets.

The upholstery and stair attachments were equally useful. The upholstery head cleaned sofas and seat cushions well, applying the cleaning solution evenly and easily reaching corners and crevices. It is loud when in use, and upholstery was left a little more damp than we’d have liked after cleaning. But these niggles aside, it’s a reliable buy — and ideal for cleaning up after pets.

Here’s a carpet cleaning machine that you can use throughout your home. On test, our carpet was left almost sparkling, with just the slightest remnants of mud remaining, while most staining was stripped from our hardwood floor too. Its Deep Clean setting did leave carpet fairly wet, so only use this on heavy soiling. Instead, we suggest opting for the less powerful Quick Clean setting for lighter stains and refreshes.

And while this cleaner looks heavy, we found it easy to move about and carry up stairs. It comes with a great selection of attachments too, including a helpful crevice tool that reaches into tricky corners as well as a bottle of cleaning fluid. These can’t be stored on board but a drawstring bag is included.

It’s an easy design to carry around the house and we found it straightforward to remove and fill up the water tanks. Doubling up as a dry vacuum, this is a great multi-purpose machine. Its robust design (with a substantial dirty water tank) proved reliable on hard flooring, with only small areas of trodden-in mud remaining after carpet cleaning. Carpets weren’t left too damp either.

Set up is a bit more involved than others listed here, and there’s only one sachet of cleaning fluid included. The large dirty water tank is also difficult to empty when completely full, but the clean water tank can be removed so refilling from the tap is easy.

What is a carpet cleaner?

Carpet cleaners use a combination of specially formulated cleaning solutions and powerful brush heads to reach deep into your carpet pile, lifting away grime and ground-in dirt. In many cases, the machines also restore carpet, leaving it looking refreshed and almost new.

The machines conquer this challenging job thanks to their clean and dirty tanks. Water and any cleaning solution are kept in the clean tank, then, after you pull the trigger, this solution is sprayed onto the carpet before being sucked back into the dirty water tank.

Many of the models we tested proved versatile bits of kit, also boasting hard-floor, upholstery and even stair-cleaning capabilities.

How often should you clean your carpet?

Our experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute recommend that you deep clean all your carpets once a year. But if you have allergies or pets, deep clean once every six months. If a stain appears on your carpet – especially ones such as wine, mustard or curry – treat it immediately.

How much is a good carpet cleaner?

Setting you back up to £300, good carpet cleaners aren’t cheap but investing in one should help keep your carpets refreshed and in good condition for longer.

Top brands include Vax, Bissell and Rug Doctor and you’ll notice several from the former on our list. The reason? Well, at the GHI we’ve tested every single carpet cleaner in Vax’s range and the market-leading brand has a wide range of machines to serve consumers’ differing needs. They cater to a range of budgets too, and its two Spotwash models should cost you closer to £100.

If you don’t have space for the sizeable appliances, you can hire professional cleaners to deep clean your carpets, which costs around £200. Alternatively, you can hire a machine from companies such as Rug Doctor for around £25 (with extra for detergent).

Baking soda, ammonia, ice and a regular brush – we tell you how to clean the carpet from stains and dust.

Pexels

The carpet is an interior decoration, but if stains appear on it, it can spoil the built composition. Not only store formulations can remove dirt, but also those that you have at hand. We tell you which carpet cleaning products at home are effective and safe.

All about cleaning the carpet with folk methods

Preparatory step
Product selection
Post-cleaning tips

The first step before cleaning your carpet at home with household products is to determine the material of the product. It will depend on what means can be used. For example, cleaning natural wool or silk carpets with homemade compounds is not a good idea. Also, home remedies are not suitable for suede coverings. In other cases, you need to remember that synthetic carpets are more wear-resistant and easier to clean. But products made from natural materials are more capricious, it is better to be careful with them.

The second step is to understand which part of the product you are planning to clean. If cleaning is planned locally, then you can proceed to the next step. If you want to clean the entire coating, you need to move the furniture. Also note that it will take time for the product to dry. Therefore, it is either worth cleaning in parts, or leaving a small path for the passage.

The third step is to vacuum the carpet completely to get rid of any debris or dust that has lodged under the pile. This step will simplify further cleaning.

Unsplash

If you do not use chemicals for cleaning your home and decide to clean the coating, then for some dirt products that are on hand will work. They should be used carefully. Before starting the process, it is important to test the composition on an inconspicuous area of the carpet, for example, where it is not visible under the furniture. If after application the textile has changed color, then the composition cannot be used.

Listed the most effective remedies in video

1. Soda

Baking soda is a wonderful natural absorbent. It will remove greasy stains and also help get rid of odors. For example, if your pet left a nasty surprise on the floor. For cleaning you will need any convenient container, soda and clean water.

Pour soda powder into a container, add some water, then stir. You should have a soft paste. It is applied to the stain or other necessary surface and allowed to dry completely. The hardened solution is cleaned with a brush or vacuum cleaner. If the spots persist, you can wipe them with 3% hydrogen peroxide. But it should be used only on light-colored textiles, as it whitens the surface.

Pexels

2. Vinegar

Regular 9% vinegar will help get rid of fresh stains that have not yet been absorbed into the coating. In half a liter of clean water, dilute 2 tbsp. spoons of funds. Apply the resulting mixture to the stain and rub it with a sponge. Vacuum after drying. The composition will help keep animals away from the carpet if they leave puddles on it, as they do not like the smell. However, you need to understand that the aroma can be unpleasant for humans.

3. Salt

Salt is another effective remedy. It is quite safe, as there can be no allergies from it. Salt can be used to clean both natural and synthetic materials. She, like soda, can cope with unpleasant odors. For cleaning, the cheapest finely ground salt, for example, the Extra variety, is suitable.

The method of its application is very simple. Sprinkle dry carpet with salt. Then it is distributed over the coating, it is most convenient to do this with a brush or broom. Simultaneously with the distribution, you can slightly lift the pile so that the product penetrates under it. During cleaning, salt particles will become dirty. They should be brushed off with a damp brush dipped in warm water. Then you need to sprinkle salt again and repeat the procedure. When the particles are no longer contaminated, you can complete the cleaning. Allow the coating to dry completely and vacuum over it to remove the product.

Pexels

4. Sawdust, bran or semolina

Sawdust, bran and semolina are an alternative to salt. They also absorb dirt very well. All products should be used only in dry form. It is advisable to brush off the coating with a dry brush, and at the end of cleaning immediately go through with a vacuum cleaner to get rid of the remaining particles.

5. Ice

Ice helps to get rid of chewing gum and wax. It needs to be placed in a tight plastic bag, for this, options on a zip fastener are well suited. Then, a bag with ice cubes inside is gently passed over the contamination until it hardens. Then take a blunt object, such as a spatula, and remove the hardened material. The remains are removed with a vacuum cleaner.

If the dirt is not completely removed, you can apply baking soda or use a different composition on top of it. And after processing, blot with a napkin dipped in warm water.

Also, ice will help smooth out dents from standing furniture. On the damaged places you need to put a cube and leave for a couple of minutes. Then carefully comb the pile with a brush, lifting it up.

Unsplash

6. Ammonia

Another effective stain remover is ammonia. With it, you can remove greasy and small dirt, so the composition is suitable for regular procedures. Dilute 2/3 tablespoons of alcohol in half a liter of water. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray onto textiles. Scrub the surface with a brush or sponge. Let it dry and then vacuum it up for the final time.

7. Snow

Beating a carpet in the snow is a technique used by our parents and grandparents. It is still popular today because it is very effective. In this way, you can clean out various dirt, including getting rid of bacteria and microorganisms, as they die at sub-zero temperatures. The method is suitable for processing carpets with both short and long pile.

It is worth taking the product outside in frosty weather. Never clean during a thaw, as you can over-moisten the carpet. High humidity is harmful to fibers. Choose an area with pure white snow. It is ideal to carry out the procedure after a snowfall, when the snow has not yet had time to melt in the sun and turn into an ice crust – this will become an obstacle during cleaning, and can also damage the material.

The technique is simple: the laid out carpet should be sprinkled with snow on top. It will collect dirt from the pile, then it needs to be swept away with a brush or broom. Then the steps are repeated until the snow on top remains clean. You can also take a special beater and walk on top of it to get rid of dust – it will remain on the snow.

Pexels

8. Brush

The coating can be cleaned without additional solvents. For example, using a brush with medium hard bristles (soft ones will not clean the pile, while hard ones can damage it). She needs to “comb” the product against the pile. The brush will collect hair and animal hair that cannot be removed with a vacuum cleaner.

9. Special soap

You can make your own effective dry cleaner at home. However, this requires a little preparation.

You will need wheat flour, ground pumice and salt. Then you need to mix 6 parts of flour and one part of pumice and salt. The ingredients are placed in a saucepan, add a little water and bring to a boil over low heat. The resulting consistency should be like a thick paste. After thickening, the mixture is allowed to cool. You can pour it into a mold for more convenient use. The cooled solution will be solid and similar to soap. The tool will cope with dirt on textiles as follows: a piece of “soap” is carried over the pile, and then the composition is cleaned from the carpet with a dry brush.

Pexels

After you clean the pile, you should follow some simple recommendations. In this case, it will be possible to keep the product in a tidy condition for a long time and protect it from damage.

  • Coatings of any material should not be cleaned with very hot water.
  • If a stain is planted, then it must be removed immediately. Otherwise, it may stay with you forever.
  • To process the carpet, if you decide to clean it yourself, you need to against the pile. This applies to any cleaning, including using a brush.
  • Wet cleaning of the coating is not recommended more than once every three months. Too frequent use may shorten the life of the product.
  • The position of the carpet is sometimes worth changing. This way you will prevent the appearance of greasy and frayed stains in those places where people most often walk in the room.
  • It must be vacuumed at least once every 7 days and thoroughly cleaned once a year.

Ways to clean carpets with baking soda and vinegar

Carpet cleaners are freely available at any hardware store, but not everyone uses them. Someone does not buy them because of allergies, someone because of high prices, and some simply because they know the secret of a safe and cheap analog based on vinegar and soda. This home remedy removes carpet stains as well as imported shampoos, but at a fraction of the cost. How to clean the carpet with a soda-vinegar mixture, tells the expert of the Carpet to the House store.

What it does

Carpet OSTA PIAZZO has been lying in the pantry for a long time and now it smells of dust and mustiness. In addition, it looks stale and stained in places. Can you clean it with vinegar and baking soda? What is the effect of this cleaning? How often to carry it out?

Of course, you can clean your carpet with baking soda and vinegar. This composition effectively refreshes the color and removes all types of unstable carpet stains, in particular, stubborn dust, dirt, greasy deposits, traces of shoes, spilled liquids, animal life, etc. In addition, vinegar well neutralizes unpleasant odors, especially ammonia and moldy, and soda destroys pathogenic bacteria, dust mites-saprophytes, colonies of mold and fungus.

But! Persistent old stains, for example, from various dyes, a vinegar-soda mixture can make it even brighter. To destroy them, use a special stain remover for carpets or take the product to a dry cleaner.

The frequency of cleaning the carpet with soda and vinegar is determined individually, but it is better not to wait for severe contamination. The less dirt, the easier it is to deal with it.

Delicate carpets do not tolerate vinegar and soda

Is it possible to clean carpets made of natural wool, silk, cotton, fur with soda and vinegar? I want to freshen up the red Links Terra rug, but I’m afraid to ruin it.

Rugs such as yours should not be cleaned with this product, as vinegar and soda are too aggressive for natural wool. To remove dirt from a wool carpet, it is best to use factory products recommended by the manufacturer. Or take it to the dry cleaners.

It is also not recommended to use a vinegar-soda mixture to clean carpets made from other natural materials. So, a product that contains silk can become unusable even from short-term contact with the components of the composition.

Preparing the carpet for cleaning

So the baking soda/vinegar solution is only good for cleaning faux carpets? We have just such a beige-brown from the Alpha series. Does it need to be specially prepared for cleaning?

Before proceeding with the treatment of the carpet with a mixture of vinegar and soda, it is enough to vacuum it thoroughly so that no litter and dust remain on it. In the absence of a vacuum cleaner, it is advisable to knock out the carpet with a clapperboard, since sweeping with a broom does not remove all the dirt.

If you clean the carpet with a washing vacuum cleaner, let the pile dry completely.

How to make vinegar and soda mix

I’m going to clean the light carpet with vintage cars. How to prepare the composition?

Write down the recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup warm water, preferably bottled, boiled or filtered through a carbon filter. The less salt it contains, the better.
  • 4-5 tablespoons of 9% vinegar.
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda.
  • 1 tablespoon low foam laundry detergent (for automatic washing machines) – optional but recommended. The powder dissolves old dirt and breaks down organic pollutants.
  • If you want to lighten the carpet, you can add 1-2 tablespoons of citric acid solution and 3% hydrogen peroxide to the composition.

This amount is enough to process one small or medium carpet.

Cooking:

Pour water into a glass or plastic container, add vinegar, then pour in the powder and, last but not least, soda. To knead the composition, use dishes that are 2-3 times larger than the ingredients, as the mixture of vinegar and soda foams and boils. After adding the washing powder, stir the solution so that no sediment and grains remain in it.

After mixing all the ingredients and without waiting for the end of the soda extinguishing reaction, pour the liquid into a spray bottle (you can use an airbrush or a garden sprayer instead – the finer the dispersion of the aerosol, the deeper the penetration into the pile) and start cleaning.

Carpet cleaning procedure

Baby play mat is unevenly soiled. How to clean it with soda and vinegar?

The best cleaning effect is achieved when the carpet is treated with a bubbling solution – until the soda quenching reaction is completed. Therefore, apply the first portions of the mixture to the most polluted places. Raise dirt to the surface with a dry sponge.

When spraying the carpet, try not to let the pile get too wet. With proper cleaning, it should only slightly moisten. If there is a wet spot somewhere, blot it with paper towels.

In the process of extinguishing the soda and when the solution comes into contact with the surface of the pile, a lot of carbon dioxide is released (it can cause a headache if inhaled). In addition, vinegar, even in small concentrations, has a pungent odor. To avoid discomfort, carry out work with open windows.

Be sure to protect the skin of your hands with rubber gloves, as the liquid is quite caustic.

On the Internet, you can find another recipe for cleaning carpets with vinegar and soda. Its authors recommend that you first sprinkle the carpet with soda powder, then pour it with a solution of vinegar. This is wrong, because with this treatment, the soda does not completely dissolve, but penetrates into the carpet to the very foundation, firmly eating into the fibers of the pile. After treatment, hard-to-remove whitish spots will most likely remain on the carpet, and the base, due to soaking in vinegar and water, will become sticky and deformed. In addition, the interaction of the solution with the backing adhesive can give the carpet a very unpleasant, persistent odor.

And finally, a little trick that will allow you to avoid difficult and time-consuming cleaning in the future: the model you indicated is made of Sorona fiber, a feature of which is the ease of removing fresh dirt. After removing old stains, you can easily keep the product clean – just wipe the undried dirt with a damp cloth or sponge with mild soapy water.

Can a baking soda/vinegar mixture be enhanced to remove particularly stubborn stains?

I cleaned a children’s carpet with roads according to your recipe, but there were still stains of chocolate, tomato juice, grass, chewing gum and something else. Is it possible to somehow strengthen the action of the composition so that it copes with any pollution?

Unfortunately, even such a highly active mixture is not a panacea. If the stain is very persistent and old, it will not be so easy to remove it. There is no guarantee that even repeated treatment will help, so for such cases it is better to have a special carpet stain remover on hand. Fortunately, they are sold in many stores and are not too expensive.

To reduce fresh stains, you can use ordinary edible salt (not iodized) – it absorbs liquids spilled on the carpet and neutralizes some types of organic contaminants (stains of chocolate, grass, juice, blood, etc.). However, the stubborn pollution of salt, alas, is not subject to it – it is only able to make them a little lighter, but it will not completely remove them.

Very effectively break down organic matter and such well-known products as laundry soap and washing powder with bioenzymes (the packaging of such powders is usually marked “bio”). If your carpet is stained with organic matter, add not one, but 2-3 tablespoons of laundry detergent or grated laundry soap to the composition.

In some cases, it is permissible to increase the concentration of soda and vinegar in the cleaning solution, but not more than 2-3 times. This will slightly increase its effectiveness, but also make it more aggressive. Before use, it is recommended to test the solution on an inconspicuous area of \u200b\u200bthe carpet or a cut pile, and also to reduce the processing time to a minimum.

It is possible to remove traces of chewing gum from the carpet only by freezing it and mechanically removing it. Do not clean it with chemicals.

Soda, vinegar and washing vacuum cleaner

Is it possible to pour a solution of vinegar and soda instead of a spray bottle into a washing vacuum cleaner?

In no case is it possible. The composition that is used to clean carpets is chemically active and quite caustic. If a vacuum cleaner is poured into the tank, it may leak into the engine compartment and damage electrical components. This is fraught not only with the failure of an expensive device, but also with an electric shock to the one who uses it.

How to use the components of the cleaning solution individually

Can I use only vinegar or only soda to clean carpets? I need to remove a few dissimilar stains from a 3D SAHRA patterned carpet, no need for a full cleaning yet.

Can. Vinegar is used to remove fresh stains from wine, tobacco ash, grease, cat urine and other organic compounds. It is also used to eliminate unpleasant odors and refresh the color of carpets.

A solution of table vinegar, and even more so essences (if someone has preserved them) are not used in their pure form. Before use, it must be diluted in a ratio of 1-3 tablespoons of 9% of the product per 0.2-1 liter of water. The stronger the contamination, the higher should be the concentration of the solution.

Soda effectively collects dust, dirt, absorbs spilled liquids and grease. For cleaning carpets, it is used both in dry and in dissolved form. Dry soda is simply scattered over the surface of the pile, walked over it with a brush and collected along with dust and dirt with a vacuum cleaner.
