How to install a casement window air conditioner

Note that except for the Keystone AC we reviewed above, most casement window air conditioners weigh about 70 lbs. You’ll probably need to enlist the help of a friend to lift your AC into your window. 

If your unit doesn’t come with a window air conditioner installation kit, make sure you purchase one separately. These typically include a mounting bracket and window seals.

Review the instructions before you get started. Gather all the necessary tools beforehand, which may include a screwdriver, measuring tape, and a ladder.

Step 1: Install a support

Seventy pounds is a lot of weight for your window sill to carry. A bracketed mount will help distribute the load.

Follow the instructions for your support bracket. It will screw into the side of your home. You may have to set up a ladder outdoors if you can’t reach from inside the window.

If your crank mechanism or hinge is in the way, take it apart and remove it. Put it somewhere safe to reinstall it once the weather cools down, and you want to take the AC out.

Step 2 : Position the AC

To cool a room, all portable air conditioners must be properly installed and blow out hot air as it cools. This warm air is usually expelled outside with the included window kit, but traditional windows are not always available.

Why ventilate a portable air conditioner?

Mobile air conditioners cool your room by removing hot air from the room. If warm air is not vented outside, it will stay in your room, negating the cold air that enters your space.

How to install a portable air conditioner with a window kit

Most portable air conditioners, compared to cassette air conditioners, are easy to install and ventilate with a window kit provided by the manufacturer. In just a few steps, you will be on your way to a more comfortable interior space.

Standard window kit includes a window bracket, one or two vent hoses and vent hose adapters. Follow these steps to quickly set up your portable air conditioner:

1. When venting the portable air conditioner, connect all hose connectors/adapters and insert the hose(s).
2. Extend the adjustable window kit to the length of your window. If necessary, trim the window bracket to fit snugly against the window. Your specific model may come with screws to hold the window kit in place. Then close the window to secure the kit in place.
3. Then connect the ventilation hose to the window kit. If your model is properly installed and ventilated, you can start cooling immediately. Just plug it in and program your settings.

Sliding Window and Sliding Door Ventilation

Standard window brackets are designed for horizontal installation at the bottom of windows, but can also be installed vertically to fit sliding windows and sliding doors. Some window bracket modifications may be required to install air conditioners on sliding windows.

For sliding windows, make sure the bracket is long enough to fit the opening. Blocks with double window brackets usually work well for sliding windows. The double bracket includes a standard window bracket and an optional filler bracket. After installing the bracket, if there is still a hole in it, you can fill it with insulation.

With sliding window air conditioners, the window brackets will not be long enough to fill the vertical opening, so you will need to fill the extra space with some other material.

Casement windows

Since casement and pivot windows open like doors, standard window sets are not suitable. Many buyers who have hinged windows simply cover the entire window opening with plexiglass and cut out a hole for the exhaust hose.

Wall ventilation

Some people prefer to vent hot air through a vent in the wall, directly outside or into another area such as a garage or storage room. You can use a jigsaw to cut a hole to the desired size in the wall, but make sure there is no wiring or plumbing where you want to cut the hole. The edges of the hole can be sealed with silicone sealant.

Window air conditioners provide effective room cooling in rooms or apartments that do not have access to central ventilation and air conditioning systems. For installation, all you need is an appropriately sized window (or wall space), a warm room, and a desire to relax in a cool environment on a hot summer day. They are more energy efficient and environmentally friendly than mobile air conditioners.

Window air conditioner models are independent cooling systems designed to cool one or two rooms. Traditionally, these units are mounted semi-permanently inside standard vertical sash or double sash windows or permanently inside a measured and prepared wall opening.

Window air conditioner consists of three main parts: compressor, condenser coil and evaporator coil. The standard window air conditioner is also equipped with two motorized fans, expansion valve, air filter, manual or digital thermostat and control panel. To cool indoor air, they use a refrigerant, a chemical compound used in refrigeration systems to absorb heat from the environment.

All models cool by extracting hot and humid air from the room, cooling and dehumidifying it, and returning it back to the room, expelling warm air outside. Technically speaking, a window air conditioner uses its compressor to compress the refrigerant into hot gas at high pressure. The gaseous refrigerant then passes through the condenser coil where it condenses to liquid and is directed through the expansion valve and evaporator coil to absorb heat and cool. Hot air is expelled through the back of the air conditioner – the part facing outward – while cold air is blown into your room through the air return grill located on the front of the system.

Cooling capacity

The cooling capacity of a room air conditioner is measured in thermal units per hour. To ensure high efficiency, choose an air conditioner with a level of air per square foot of your room or space.

If you use a window air conditioner that is not strong enough to cover a large room, it will run overtime trying to bring the temperature down. In contrast, a window air conditioner that is too powerful for your room will cool it, but will not remove as much moisture from the air as a properly sized unit should.

Type of installation

When choosing a window air conditioner, you must also consider where you install it. The most popular window models are designed for installation in double hung or vertical opening windows, but there are several options.

When installing a window in a double sash window, you need to accurately measure the dimensions inside the window frame, paying particular attention to the width. With these dimensions in hand, find the minimum and maximum window widths listed on the air conditioner specifications. Don’t worry if the window air conditioner doesn’t fit exactly to your window frame. All window air conditioners come with installation kits that include adjustable side shades to cover any extra space left on each side of the window opening.

If you plan to install it through a wall, first make sure that the desired device is suitable for this type of installation and that you have the appropriate mounting kit. Not all window air conditioners can be installed through the wall. Check the specifications to see if your model has this option.

Then write down the dimensions of the finished wall opening, which should be indicated in the instruction manual. Use these dimensions when creating an opening in the wall. If necessary, consult a professional when attempting to install a window air conditioner through a wall.

Once fully installed – whether in a window or through a wall – the window air conditioner should be installed exactly inside the opening, with the warm air outlet facing outward and the cold air return inward. Some models have a retractable chassis and strong mounting sleeves that help stabilize each unit and provide easy service access. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions that came with your device.

Electrical requirements

Window air conditioners are more powerful than other conventional household appliances. Because of this, you will need to ensure that your existing electrical system is suitable for the needs of your chosen device. Most room air conditioners operate on 115, 125 or 220 volts.

These features are designed to give you more control over how your device works and, in some cases, increase your efficiency. Most models come with digital controls and remote controls, but some models have manual dials.
