We found the dust cup very easy to remove, empty and replace, something we can’t say for all the models in our test. We like the extended comfy grip and how well it maneuvered on bare floors and low- and medium-pile carpets. The controls are clear and easy to use and it comes with a wall-mountable caddy that holds all the vacuum’s attachments — even a flexible hose — so nothing gets lost. Other nice touches at this price include a tangle-free brush roll, lighted crevice and dusting brush tool, a flexible hose for better reach and a sealed system to better trap dust and allergens, though we’d have loved to see a HEPA filter included on this model.

Dyson’s Detect vacuums are some of the coolest. Dirt, pet hair and dust bunnies can’t hide from this vacuum with its innovative laser beam on its bare floor fluffy roller attachment. Simply turn it on to shine an angled beam of light directly in front of the vacuum to illuminate and nab the tiny pieces of dust and hair you can’t easily see in normal light.

In our tests, we were amazed. Specks and particles that were invisible in regular light — like those in the corners of stair treads — came into clear view when the laser hit them. And just in case you were wondering exactly what it’s picking up, the colorful display shows the amount and size of the particles it’s grabbing along with run time, power level and maintenance alerts. The only thing that would have made it better was having a second charged battery waiting in the wings.

Like all Dyson vacs we’ve tested, it’s fully featured with powerful suction, great filtration and lots of useful attachments, including a unique cone-shaped tool that picks up pet hair and spirals it into the bin without tangling. In the Cleaning Lab, this Dyson model aced all of our performance tests for bare floor cleaning, pet hair pick-up and edge cleaning and ran on Eco mode for just over 50 minutes. And at just about 5 pounds, we found it lightweight and easy to maneuver, store and clean. Plus, we applaud Dyson for equipping this model with a push button on/off switch for continuous operation. Gone is the trigger that you had to hold down to keep the vacuum running that many users complained about.

We loved the Miele Triflex HX1 stick vacuum and this newer version — the Triflex HX2 — is even better. No other stick vacuum is as innovative and adaptable as the Miele Triflex. Most stick vacuums can be used in two configurations — upright and handheld. But the Miele can transform into a third design. With the motor, battery and dust cup (the power unit) placed up top, it works like a traditional pole vacuum, making it easy to reach under low furniture or up high to clean ceiling moldings and light fixtures. But there’s more! Move the power unit — and the weight — down by the nozzle and it’s now easier to push and maneuver across bare floors, areas rugs and carpets. And with more of the weight at the bottom, it can now do a better job cleaning deeper pile carpets. Finally, you can detach the power unit completely and use it as a handheld for stairs, upholstery and other above-the-floor cleaning needs.

In our testing, we experienced great bare floor cleaning, pet hair pick-up and edge-cleaning performance on all our test surfaces. Though heavier than other vacuums we’ve tested, the Miele Triflex was easy to use with features like fingertip controls, battery indicator lights, a bright headlight on the wide floor nozzle and a lifetime HEPA filter that never needs washing or changing. New with this version is the crank on the filter. As you turn it, fine dust is knocked from the filter into the cup for better cleaning and emptying. And a cleaner filter means better, longer-lasting suction, too. The battery offered up just under 30 minutes of run time on the lowest power setting with the power nozzle attached, which is less than others in our test.

If you are looking to only spend around $100 for a stick vacuum to do occasional or light cleaning, this Vactidy Blitz V8 is a solid option. Weighing in at just over 5 pounds, it’s lightweight and has a metal telescoping wand, which we like, though the plastic body feels more flimsy than other models we tested.

With high and low power modes, the Vactidy did a great job cleaning bare floors. And while it did a good job picking up pet hair from carpet, some hair clung to the nozzle and had to be removed by hand. Sadly, its edge cleaning was among the poorest in our test.

We did find the Vactidy easy to use and maneuver, and the dust cup was easy to remove, clean and replace. All of the filters, including its HEPA filter, are washable which is convenient and saves you from having to buy replacements. The battery is removable for charging, and a small wall dock holds the vacuum but not the attachments, so you’ll have to store them separately.

For those who prefer a more traditional stick vac configuration with an easy-to-grab handheld vacuum that piggybacks on board, this Electrolux WellQ7 is a great choice. Plus, it’s slim, streamlined and stands up on its own (which we love!). And, it’s got lots of upscale extras like two power nozzles, an extending crevice tool and a pedal that you press to snip hair wrapped around the roller brush.

We found it refreshing to review this vacuum among all the other pole vacs in the test. It was simple and straightforward to use and did a great job in our bare floor and pet hair pick-up tests. The hand vac and stick vac share the same dust cup with a multi-layer filter system. And this design makes it easy to pop off the hand vac quickly when you need it without having to disassemble the entire vacuum.

The Electrolux maneuvered easily on all surfaces and around corners and ran for over an hour on low power on a single charge. The only hiccup was that it stumbled on our edge-cleaning test. To clean along edges, you’ll have to attach the crevice tool to the handheld vacuum. Storage and charging are easy — simply set it on its base. We like our vacuums out of site instead of mounted on a wall, and this vacuum tucks neatly away.

How we test cordless stick vacuums

No single vacuum is the perfect choice for every cleaning need, so we usually recommend keeping several styles in your cleaning arsenal, and a stick vac should certainly be part of the mix. The GH Cleaning Lab is constantly testing vacuums of all makes and models, and because there are new ones coming to market all the time, we continually update our reviews. We’ve tested the best robot vacuums, handheld vacuums, vacuums for pet hair, vacuums for hardwood floors, budget-friendly vacuums under $100 and more. Add this to the hundreds of hours we’ve spent testing uprights, canisters, robots and more, and it’s safe to say we know our vacuums.

In our most recent category test of 23 stick vacuums, we gathered and assessed over 500 data points to calculate the highest overall scorers and select the top models to recommend.

When we evaluate a stick or any vacuum, we base our tests on ASTM International standard test methods. As members of this voluntary standards-making organization’s F11 Vacuum Cleaner Committee, we meet twice yearly with engineers and experts from the industry to discuss, develop and update the vacuum cleaner testing methods we all use. A major part of Good Housekeeping’s role on this committee is to make sure these standards are relevant to how everyday consumers actually use vacuum cleaners and their experiences with them. Our stick vacuum testing includes evaluations for:

✔️ Performance: We evaluate how well each vacuum removes “pet hair” by evenly spreading industry-standard rayon fibers that simulate and cling like actual pet hair over the surface of a carpet. Each vacuum is passed over the carpet the same number of times and what’s left behind gets scored. In a similar fashion, we assess how well the vacuum picks up large and fine particles of debris (like rice, dry oatmeal and gritty sand) from hard flooring like vinyl and how closely it cleans along edges. The tests on each model are repeated three times to obtain more accurate results.

✔️ Ease of use: Because a vacuum must not only perform well but also make cleaning less of a chore, we weigh how heavy it is and measure the run time for battery-operated models. We run these tests with the rotating floor brush nozzle attached as this is the most likely way you will use it. We assess how comfortable it is to hold, how convenient the controls are to access and how easy the dust cup is to clean and empty. We also consider how easily it stands up on its own, whether or not the battery is removable for easier charging and how neat and compact it is to store.

✔️ Sound: We test models for quietness with the help of Quiet Mark, a global certification organization that aims to reduce noise pollution. They measure the noise output of each model for us.

✔️ Features: We note and test any unique features like whether or not it has a battery charge indicator, a brush roll control button or extra tools and attachments.

✔️ Consumer experience: Finally, we recruit consumer testers to rate the vacuums’ maneuverability on bare floors and carpets, around corners and under furniture. They also test the ease of removing the dust cup or bag and the ease of operating the vacuums’ controls.

What to look for when shopping for the best cordless stick vacuums

✔️ Corded vs. cordless: Corded vacuums work nonstop so there’s no downtime and no need to recharge the battery. The downside is that you are tethered to an outlet and can only roam as far as the length of a cord. Cordless vacuums are much more popular and run on batteries. Today’s lithium-ion batteries have more power and last longer than the nickel-cadmium batteries of older models. Some lasted up to as long as 60 minutes in our tests. On some models, the battery pack itself can be removed for charging which allows you to simply plug in only the battery and store the rest of the vacuum out of sight. Keep in mind that manufacturers report battery run time without any attachments, which is, honestly, not how people clean. Once you add the rotating brush or another attachment that requires power, battery run time goes down. Don’t be surprised if the battery doesn’t last as long when you are cleaning as is claimed on the box.

✔️ Floor type: Stick vacs work best cleaning bare floors, low-pile rugs and surface-cleaning carpets. Those that convert to a hand vac or have hand vacuums on board can also clean upholstery, stairs and even the car. For bigger jobs, like deep cleaning a whole house with multiple rooms, deep-pile carpets or a mix of hard and soft surfaces, you may prefer a full-size upright or canister vacuum. But a good stick vac with max or turbo settings can certainly suffice, especially if you are in a hurry. Just keep in mind that the higher the power setting you use, the less run time you get.

✔️ Brush roll: A rotating brush roll is important to help remove dirt that’s settled down into the tufts of area rugs and carpets. Brush rolls also help collect debris on bare floors but can sometimes cause debris to scatter and should only be used if they’re soft enough not to scratch your floors. If you are vacuuming only bare floors, a stick vacuum with a soft, fluffy rotating brush roll is your best bet. Some of the newest stick vacuums, like our Samsung pick, now have power nozzles that combine a rotating brush with a soft roller for a universal head that works on all flooring types.

✔️ Convertibility: Having one vacuum that does double duty is always a bonus. For that reason, virtually all stick vacs can either be converted to a handheld vacuum by popping off the motored top or removing the handle — or they come with a separate handheld unit that snaps directly onto the body of the stick vacuum. Both the handheld and stick vacuums operate with the same motor, so they charge (and run down) at the same time.

✔️ Storage space: Because they are slim, stick vacuums take up less storage space than full-size vacuums, but most don’t stand up on their own, especially those with heavy motors on top. For this reason, most come with and snap into charging brackets that you can mount to a wall. Others may have bases that you set the stick vac onto to keep it upright for storage and charging. The newest models have storage systems that even automatically empty the vacuum’s dust cup when you place it inside for less mess. Whichever type you choose, we recommend looking for one with a stand that also holds any attachments so everything’s neatly stored in one place. Some come with retractable or foldable handles to take up even less precious closet space.

Best Stick Vacuums of 2023

The compact size of stick vacuums certainly makes them convenient. But that’s not their only selling point.

“In the past few years, stick vacuum suction has gotten a lot stronger, especially in battery-powered stick vacuums,” says Frank Rizzi, a senior test lab engineer at Consumer Reports. “If you don’t have a lot of wall-to-wall carpet, these machines can do a lot of cleaning.” (If you do have wall-to-wall carpet, read our article on the best upright vacuums.)

In fact, the performance of stick vacuums has improved so much in recent years that Consumer Reports has made its stick vacuum tests more challenging to bring them more in line with the way we test full-sized vacuums. As their capabilities have increased, so has the toughness of our tests. 

That means we are giving you more decision points to help you choose whether you want a stick vac or a full-sized vacuum. As a result of these changes, our pet hair tests are a bit more challenging and we now embed dirt in the carpeting instead of scattering it on the surface as we used to do. And for bare floor testing, instead of combining all the debris into a messy array of cereal, sand, and rice, we vacuum up each type separately. This is good to know if you have a toddler in a high chair! All in all, we’ve made our stick vacuum tests better reflect real-world situations.

Among stick vacuums, cordless models dominate the market. According to the research firm Gap Intelligence, only about 1 in 4 stick vacuums on the market is a corded model and the rest—more than 100 models and counting—run on batteries.

But cordless stick vacs aren’t problem-free. In our exclusive CR surveys, more than 40 percent of battery-powered stick vacs owned by our members developed problems with the battery within the first five years of ownership. Corded stick vacuums do not have this issue, which is why we give separate reliability ratings for cordless and corded stick vacuum brands.

Because of their low ratings for brand reliability, no cordless model earns a recommendation from CR despite scoring well in our performance tests. 

Run times for cordless vacuums can vary widely. In Consumer Reports’ tests, some stick vacs lose power in as little as 7 minutes when running on high and others run for an hour or longer on low. Some brands include an extra battery with their cordless stick vacuums so that you can have one charging while you’re cleaning with the other. (You can also buy an extra battery for some models.)

Here is how we conduct our revamped stick vacuum tests of brands including Bissell, Dyson, Hoover, Kenmore, Samsung, Shark, and Tineco.

For Bare Floors
In separate tests, we scatter cereal, rice, and sand on a section of laminate flooring. We use four swipes to remove the cereal and rice and two to pick up the sand. We weigh the vacuum before and after to calculate how much debris was removed.

For Pet Hair
We embed 1 gram of Maine coon cat hair in a medium-pile carpet and then see how many strokes it takes to remove it, with a maximum of five. We note the number of strokes and see how much fur, if any, is left behind on the carpet or in the brush roll. 

For Carpeting 
We embed 100 grams of sand into a carpet and vacuum the debris on high speed for 16 strokes using a strobe light to highlight the test area. We weigh the vacuum before and after.

Run Time
To test battery life, we run the cordless vacs on high and then again on low until the battery is depleted, then we note the times. If the vacuum has a medium setting (not every vacuum does), we test that too.

If you haven’t been inquisitive for a while, you might be surprised at what new vacuum cleaners have to offer, including lasers and LCD screens designed to detect and remove more dust and dirt.

But these are not all high-tech solutions. Some of the vacuums we reviewed have brilliant problem-solving features that take the hassle out of using and maintaining your vacuum, such as swiveling nozzles or washable filters. If you have problems with your current vacuum cleaner, you will definitely find a much better replacement in this review.

When you read our review, you will notice that most of our top rated vacuum cleaners are cordless. Cordless vacuum cleaners are where companies focus their energy – that’s where innovation comes in.

However, if you have a large house, you don’t have to choose wired. A cordless vacuum cleaner with a removable, rechargeable lithium-ion battery is a great option. We also recommend that you invest in a second battery so you don’t run out of power while cleaning.

Samsung’s latest cordless vacuum cleaner is a bespoke Jet vacuum cleaner.

The Bespoke Jet has all the features that made the Jet 90 a truly efficient cleaner: it’s powerful, modular, comes with well thought out cleaning accessories, replaceable battery, digital display and washable filter. This will give you 50 minutes of cleaning on the lowest setting and recharge in 3.5 hours.

But the real selling point of Bespoke is that you won’t need to find a dark corner to store it. The completely redesigned docking station is slim and attractive, it not only charges the vacuum cleaner, but also empties it with suction.

Our only problem with the vacuum itself is that it feels heavier than its 3Kg, which is exacerbated by its awkward handle.

But we have to disagree with Samsung Bespoke’s definition: in Russia you can’t just pick your desired color option from Woody Green, Midnight Blue and Misty White – each of the three color options is a separate model with a different price and accessories.

Dyson’s latest vacuum cleaner not only has increased power (from 185AW on the V11 to 240AW), but also added a brand new technology in the form of a green laser that illuminates dust invisible to the naked eye. Keep in mind that this is only effective on hard floors, not carpets.

But that’s not all. A piezo sensor connects to an LCD screen showing the size and volume of trapped dust particles, allowing you to see exactly how much dirt you’ve sucked up. Is this some kind of trick? Maybe, but it’s addictive and gives you the feeling of a job well done. The screen also displays possibly more useful information such as battery life and troubleshooting help.

On the other hand, the battery will only last you about 20 minutes if you use the high torque head in auto mode, and then it takes 4.5 hours to charge. The second battery will solve this problem, but will increase the already significant price of the V15 Detect.

Corded vacuum cleaners are making a comeback in this review as brands come out with more innovative designs. This certainly applies to the Miele Boost CX1, a corded vacuum cleaner with many of the design features of a cordless vacuum cleaner, including a bagless system, adjustable nozzle length and 360° maneuverability.

This is a very compact container vacuum cleaner (its body can take the place of an open magazine) with impressive suction power and an automatically retracting cord.

Telescopic wand means you can remove cobwebs from the ceiling with a vacuum cleaner on the floor. However, even though it has a handy carrying handle on top, it will still feel heavy if your ladder isn’t deep enough to stand on while you vacuum. And while it’s capable of cleaning carpets, it’s not as easy to use as it is on hard floors.

However, if you have a small space and are looking for a compact alternative to a mains vacuum cleaner with more cleaning power, this well-made and inexpensive unit should be a worthy contender. Don’t buy it if you have acres of carpet.

This is a brilliantly designed hard floor vacuum cleaner. Its maneuverability saves a lot of effort when vacuuming.

But this is a specialized vacuum cleaner. It won’t be ideal if you have (for example) a large, furry dog, as pet hair is likely to clog the tiny trash can and get tangled up in the rollers that give the Omni-glide its impressive movement.

However, if you have an urban cushion or are looking for a second vacuum cleaner for your kitchen, we recommend it.

This high quality vacuum cleaner is a great option for people with large homes who want to replace their stand with something cordless. However, we recommend investing in a second battery or buying the Pro model, which comes with two.

The TriFlex is a durable unit that we expect to last a very long time. As a compromise, it’s heavier than the Dyson V11 and Samsung Jet 90. That’s not an issue in Comfort mode, where the TriFlex really comes into its own and outperforms the competition (and hands off, basically). It supports its own weight and will stand on its own, unlike most other handheld cleaners, so it has all the benefits of a cordless vertical cleaner.

The Cyclone V10 is an undeniably phenomenal cordless vacuum cleaner. It has more than enough power to justify the high price, with three settings, multiple attachments, and a stylish design with extras like a wall mount.

An hour of battery life (less at higher speeds) isn’t enough to clean a large house from top to bottom, and weight will also be an issue if you’re trying to clean that long anyway – but for most people it will be enough.

Just stick with the Animal model and don’t overpay for unnecessary extras in the Absolute and Total Clean editions.

Xiaomi Mi Handheld Vacuum Cleaner G10 Global doesn’t have the suction power of our best vacuum cleaner, but it costs a lot less, making it our choice for the best vacuum cleaner available.

We were impressed with its dust collection on hard floors, but it struggled to deep clean the carpet. Likewise, its 40-minute run time is no match for the Dyson V15 Detect. However, the Cleaner G10 also outperforms other cordless vacuum cleaners, as while its decibel levels are similar to other cordless vacuum cleaners, its softer tone feels less intrusive and you can chat while cleaning without screaming.

We found it light and easy to use in both manual and manual mode. It also comes with a good range of accessories, including a motorized mattress brush that makes it easy to clean the upholstery, making it a great option for everyday floor care for those on a budget.

Samsung Jet 75 Black Extra

The Samsung Jet 75 is a great option if you’re looking for a mid-range vacuum that can handle a variety of messes. While it doesn’t have the Dyson V15 Detect’s auto power control or piezo dirt sensor, it delivers the same high pickup performance on both bare floors and carpets at a significantly more affordable price. This is mainly due to its powerful 200 AW suction motor, which is extremely powerful for a vacuum cleaner in this price range. Unlike Dyson, it’s also fully compatible with the self-cleaning base station, which sucks debris from the vacuum cleaner’s dustbin into a disposable trash bag at the touch of a button. However, this accessory is quite expensive, and buying it along with a vacuum cleaner pushes it into a higher price category.

Most Jet 75 options come with two batteries, doubling the total runtime and making it great for longer cleaning sessions if you keep both batteries charged. If you’re obsessed with Samsung’s lack of auto power adjustment but don’t want to spend a lot more, the Tineco PURE ONE S11 is worth a look. However, it has a less powerful suction motor and does not last as long on a single charge.

10. Miele Complete C3 Active Vacuum Cleaner

If you don’t like cordless vacuum cleaners and value maximum performance, it’s hard to go wrong with the Miele Complete C3. This bagged canister vacuum isn’t as easy to use as a comparable-priced cordless model like the Dyson V15 Detect. However, it delivers even better performance on a variety of surfaces and looks much better. It also comes with a host of convenient features, such as a seven-level power adjustment function, an auto-wrap power cord, and a built-in storage compartment for the three included attachments. It uses self-closing trash bags and a sealed design, making it a great choice if you suffer from allergies.

Unfortunately, it uses small trash bags, resulting in rather high running costs, and the power cord is on the shorter end of the scale. You may also want to consider the SEBO Airbelt D4 if that’s a concern for you as it uses larger trash bags and longer lasting filters. However, its bulkier design makes it less manoeuvrable than the Miele.

Check out the Miele Classic C1 if you’re looking for a mid-range cordless vacuum cleaner. It’s cheaper than the Miele Complete C3 and delivers similar overall debris removal performance as it uses the same powerful 1200W suction motor. However, its plastic body is not as durable and does not have a built-in tool storage compartment, although there is a tool clip that can be mounted at the base of its hose. However, it is highly maneuverable due to its relatively compact size. User maintenance is also surprisingly easy and hygienic thanks to easily accessible self-closing trash bags.

However, the entry level C1 Pure Suction only comes with a direct suction floor nozzle and is best suited for bare floors and low pile carpets. As such, you’ll want to upgrade to a more expensive option with an electrical outlet and power supply, such as the C1 Cat & Dog, if your home has heavy carpeting. If you’d rather use a stick vacuum, the Shark APEX UpLight is another good corded option that takes up less space when not in use and weighs less, although it’s more maintenance-friendly and doesn’t feel as durable.

What to Look for When Buying

Weight : The lightest cordless vacuum cleaner we’ve tested is the Halo Capsule at 2.6kg, but anything under 3kg is likely to be comfortable to use.

Runtime : The best cordless vacuum cleaners that use lithium-ion batteries promise up to an hour of operation on a single charge. This is the lowest setting, no motorized attachments. On medium settings, you’ll be lucky if you get half an hour. On a high setting, your charge will only last 5-8 minutes.

One of the innovations of new top-notch cordless vacuum cleaners such as Dyson, Samsung and Miele are removable Li-Ion batteries that can be charged separately. With another battery ready to go, you can instantly double your cleaning time.

Bag or no bag? Bagless is now a feature of most high-end vacuum cleaners. It is definitely a more environmentally friendly choice. However, if you are sensitive to dust, choose a vacuum cleaner with a bag, as there will be much less dust escaping during disposal.

Samsung’s new Bespoke Jet range of wireless devices features an auto-draining docking station. Other jet vacuum cleaners can be paired with a suction container called a CleanStation. You simply insert the vacuum cleaner into the station and it sucks up the dust and collects it in a bag. This is a good option for those who want to go bagless and not have to deal with dust. The Halo Capsule is also a bag vacuum, and as a bonus, its dust bags are environmentally friendly and compostable.

Charging time : Four and a half hours is decent. Anything less than this is very good.

HEPA Filter : This is the current industry standard for filters in high quality vacuum cleaners. HEPA filters (High Efficiency Particulate Air Filters) must capture 99.97% of particulate matter 3 microns or larger. (Human hair is 50-70 microns thick.) If you have a HEPA filter with a bagless purifier, remember that you still have to empty it, which will release some of the dust back into the air.

Capacity : Cordless cleaners have significantly less trash can capacity than older cylindrical or vertical cleaners, so if you switch be aware that you will have to pause more often to empty the container. The wireless Dyson V11 will give you 0.76 liters of space, while some of its competitors only 0.5 liters. The Dyson Outsize has a whopping 1.7 liters.

Suction : Manufacturers may shy away from this, and for good reason, as it’s hard to quantify. Vacuum cleaners with a longer distance between the motor and the vacuum nozzle require more power for the same suction. Measurements will be either in W – watts (not very accurate), or in AW – watts of air (better, but debatable). The Dyson V11 has 185AW and the V11 Outsize is 220.

Accessories : Manufacturers often have different versions of the same model and come with different sets of accessories. Any Dyson product labeled “Animal” after the name will have a special brush head optimized for pet hair. The equivalent Miele wireless model is called the “Dog & Cat” version. Meanwhile, Dyson’s “Absolute” cleaners will ship with all accessories (excluding the pet hair brush head). The Miele equivalent is the Pro.
