Wall or floor gas boiler – which one is better to choose? Differences and recommendations
Buying an efficient and economical boiler for a heating system is not an easy task. Many buyers do not know which gas boiler is better: floor or wall-mounted and find it difficult to choose the best model. Let’s try to figure out which model is more suitable for a private house and which option will be less hassle in terms of purchase and maintenance.
What is the difference between a floor standing gas boiler and a wall mounted one? Comparison
To find out the difference between a floor-standing and wall-mounted boiler, let’s compare the main performance characteristics of these units.
Characteristic | Wall mounted gas boiler | Floor standing gas boiler |
Heat exchanger material | steel, silumin, copper | steel, cast iron |
Life time | 10-15 years old | 25-50 years old |
Chimney | coaxial (through the wall) | classical |
Accessories | pump, expansion tank, safety group | No |
Efficiency (efficiency) | 90-94% (condensing: up to 104%) | 90-94% |
Accommodation | in almost any room (except for bathrooms and corridors) | in a separate room (with a set of specific requirements of SP and SNiP) |
Let’s move on to a more detailed analysis and comparison of models of wall and floor gas boilers for a private house.
Efficiency
The difference in the efficiency of gas heating boilers is explained by the principle of operation of a particular unit. Most floor-standing boilers work by convection: combustion products are removed through the chimney and part of the generated heat is thrown out into the street. Therefore, the big disadvantage is fuel consumption. Wall-mounted condensing options are more efficient in operation, as combustion products are reused to heat water.
Easy to install
When wondering which gas boiler is better to choose: wall-mounted or floor-standing, buyers think about the ease of installation of equipment. Mounted boilers can be mounted in almost any room: in the kitchen, in the hallway, in the pantry, under the stairs, in any utility room. Placing a floor heating boiler is possible only in a specially designated separate room. In addition, the installation of floor models should be carried out by a specialized company, as this is a difficult job that requires experience and knowledge of regulatory documentation.
Service life
The durability of a gas heating boiler depends on the resource of the heat exchanger, since its other elements, subject to the operating rules, rarely fail. Wall-mounted boilers are equipped with heat exchangers made of light aluminum or steel alloys, which corrode faster in water and fail after 10-15 years. Unlike them, outdoor ones last longer by 15-30 years. This difference is due to the fact that most of them are equipped with cast-iron heat exchangers that can work without breakdowns for more than 25 years.
Equipment difference
Floor-standing boilers are usually supplied without auxiliary equipment and require flexible configuration with everything necessary, do not require installation of additional equipment. Compared to them, suspended models already have a built-in complex structure, which consists of one or two pumps, an expansion tank, a pressure gauge, a thermometer, an air duct and a safety valve and require only the selection of a chimney kit.
Number of circuits
There are two types of gas boilers – single-circuit and double-circuit. What’s the difference between them? Single-circuit units are connected only to the heating system, and have the ability to work with a storage water boiler, double-circuit units – to the heating and hot water supply network of the house. Otherwise, the devices are similar, consisting of combustion chambers, burners, automation and other elements.
Power consumption
Modern gas heating equipment needs a reliable power supply. Electricity is needed for the operation of electric ignition, circulation pump, fan and automation. There are gas boilers powered by electricity and non-volatile units. The latter are often used in remote settlements where there are power outages, but such models are leaving the market and rapidly becoming obsolete.
Difference in the type of automation
Gas wall-mounted boilers are volatile and operate by electronic ignition, which starts when the device is turned on. You just press the button and the boiler turns on, you can choose the most suitable economical mode of operation of the boiler, adjust and monitor the temperature regime. Floor models are non-volatile, control and adjustment are carried out manually using mechanical rotary toggle switches.
Chimney organization
Floor-standing gas boilers in 90% of cases have an open combustion chamber and an atmospheric burner, so they need to equip a separate chimney to remove combustion products. Unlike floor-standing, wall-mounted gas boilers most often have a closed combustion chamber – air enters and exits through a coaxial chimney. The only disadvantage of such a chimney is the formation of condensate on its inner surface at air temperatures below -15 degrees. If you do not organize the removal of moisture, there is a risk of icing on the chimney and breakdown of the heating system.
Dimensions and weights
If we compare the dimensions of floor and wall-mounted boilers for heating a house, then mounted models are much more compact and lighter. To install them, you do not need a separate boiler room – the unit is easily placed in the kitchen or in the hallway, which is important for small private houses and cottages. Floor-standing devices, unlike wall-mounted ones, are larger in size and require additional space to accommodate the strapping, which complicates installation work.
Boiler cost comparison
Which boiler is more economical to operate: wall-mounted or floor-standing? Despite their functionality, complex and compact structure, wall-mounted units are 20-50% cheaper than floor-mounted ones. This difference in price is explained by the fact that floor heating equipment involves the purchase of additional components, as well as more complex and expensive installation. Therefore, in order to save money, it is more advisable to choose a wall-mounted option.
Why does Kryotherm recommend choosing floor-standing boilers rather than wall-mounted ones?
Before you go for new equipment, you should think in advance about how to maintain it later, whether there will be problems with parts and where to buy the right unit. Given the global economic situation, the last point is especially relevant.
Currently, floor-standing heating boilers that were used for private houses are rapidly leaving the Russian market. Over time, it will be harder to find parts and a specialist for service. Floor models will remain only in the industrial segment, and they will completely leave the domestic segment. In Europe, it has long been forbidden to place floor-standing boilers in houses at the legislative level and completely replaced them with wall-mounted ones. If you are still determined to buy a floor-standing gas unit or already own it, then consider these facts in the future.
In Russia, there will remain a wide selection of wall-mounted models that are not inferior in functionality to mini-boiler rooms. We list the advantages of wall-mounted boilers:
- Easy to install and compact. The boiler is hung on the wall and does not take up much space, you do not need to buy additional equipment for it.
- The requirements for wall mounted boilers are lower than those for floor standing boilers. They can be hung in almost any room and do not allocate a separate room for them.
- Economy. Wall-mounted boilers are more efficient, since a significant part of the heat remains in the house and is not thrown out, they consume less fuel. Accordingly, you will pay less for gas.
- Environmental component. When using modern wall-mounted boilers, less harmful emissions enter the atmosphere.
Given the situation on the heating equipment market, it is currently more rational to purchase a mounted unit. Therefore, if you do not know which boiler is better to buy – wall or floor, then definitely make a choice in favor of the first option. So you save yourself the trouble of buying a boiler and parts, as well as reduce the budget for heating your home.

The history of wall-mounted gas boilers. Creation of the first flow gas heaters and boilers | C.O.K. archive | 2020
- The history of the creation of wall-mounted gas boilers. City and natural gas
- History of wall-mounted condensing gas boilers
From an engineering point of view, wall-mounted gas boilers were born from a combination of tankless gas water heaters, which require a small footprint for bathrooms, and floor-standing gas boilers used for space heating.
The end of the 19th century was full of inventions in the field of heating and hot water preparation. At this time, many companies for the production of gas boilers arose, which are still doing this today.
The history of gas-fired hot water heaters can be traced back to 1868, when Benjamin Waddy Maughan patented the first Geyser water heater using gas as a fuel. The heater did not have a chimney, so it was not safe to use it at home.
This was the first device with the name “Geyser”, which has become in many ways a common noun for gas flow water heaters.
The subsequent development of gas boiler equipment can be represented by the following chronology.
In 1880-1889, Edwin Ruud improved the hot water heater from a safety point of view and created a device that could be used on a massive scale. Heating gas boilers and instantaneous water heaters began to be produced at his enterprises in the USA since 1880. In England at the same time, several companies were engaged in the production of gas heaters, including Ewart & Son.
In continental Europe, around the same time, a gas instantaneous hot water heater was introduced in 1892 year Hugo Junkers (Hugo Junkers). Mass production of this equipment was organized at a plant in the city of Dessau. From 1895 to 1912, more than 100 thousand gas water heaters rolled off the conveyors of the Junkers enterprise. In the same year, the inventor introduced a domestic gas boiler.
Johann Vaillant in 1894 developed a tubular heat exchanger for a geyser and after some time began to produce his own flowing gas water heaters called “Geyser”.
In 1884, the Buderus Ironworks, a family business, was established to produce heating and cooking stoves.
Joseph Strebel received a patent for a “cast iron sectional boiler with O-shaped heating channels”, and in 1900 the first Strebel plant for serial production of boilers was opened in Germany.
Around the same time, heating boilers began to be produced by companies that had long been involved in the production of metal: the French De Dietrich and the Czech “Mora Moravia”. In America, the largest share of the gas heating equipment market was occupied by the companies of the Norwegian-born mechanic and inventor Edwin Ruud.
Before the Second World War and immediately after it, gas water heaters acquired a modern look, their operation became safe and affordable.
Mass production of gas water heaters in the USSR was started in 1956 by the Moscow Iskra plant and the Leningrad Gazapparat. In total, up to the beginning of the 1980s, about 8 million of them were installed. After this period, gas water heaters were not used in new construction, but they are still used in old houses. Also in the USSR, floor-standing gas boilers were produced. At the end of 19In the 1950s, floor-standing gas boilers were the first to be produced by the Rostovgazoapparat plant.
In 1967, at the ZhMZ machine-building plant in the city of Zhukovsky, Moscow Region, they began to produce gas-fired boilers AOGV and AKGV for domestic use. The abbreviation AOGV stands for “gas heating unit”, AKGV – “combined gas unit”. The AOGV boiler is used only for heating, while the AKGV boiler allows the extraction of hot water for domestic needs.
Until the end of the 1960s in Europe and America and until the 1980s in the USSR, gas water heaters were widely used to prepare hot water, both in individual houses and in high-rise apartment buildings.
Gasification of the territories of developed countries and the widespread production of instantaneous gas hot water heaters for bathrooms for individual consumption created the prerequisites for the emergence of wall-mounted gas boilers as a new type of autonomous heating equipment for individual households.
