Cuisinart mixer stand: Stand Mixers & Stand Mixer Attachments

KitchenAid vs Cuisinart stand mixers: which mixer should you choose?

If you’re shopping for a new stand mixer, the decision often comes down to KitchenAid vs Cuisinart. Famous for their range of brilliant mixers, KitchenAid mixers are built in the USA and come in a range of different colors and sizes. This means they’re a more versatile choice for both large bakes and single-serve dishes.

With that said, others consider the much-loved Cuisinart Precision stand mixer to be an excellent alternative to the classic KitchenAid Artisan, with a larger mixing bowl and similar attachments for cooking anything from bread to cupcakes.

Many of us will be trying to decide which option is the best stand mixer for their kitchen, and it’s a tough call, because the specs are very similar, and both stand mixers are very popular with buyers.

We’ve tested both the Cuisinart Precision and the KitchenAid Artisan stand mixer independently, so if you’re trying to decide between the two, our reviews can help. Side-by-side these mixers may look similar, but there are important differences in price and capabilities, as well as that all-important performance test. In this piece we will explain the differences between the two mixers and help you decide which is right for you.

KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer | was $449.99, now $349.99 at Bed Bath & Beyond
With a smooth and sleek design, the KitchenAid Stand Mixer’s powerful motor can be used to knead, mix and whisk, adding a truly versatile tool to your kitchen. With a huge choice of colors, a smooth tilt-head design and easy access to the bowl, this robust appliance topped our tests of the best stand mixer.

Cuisinart Precision Stand Mixer | was $249. 99, now $199.99 at Best Buy

Boasting high quality, power and performance, the Cuisinart Precision Stand Mixer comes with 12 speed settings and 3 attachments, allowing for you to mix cake batter, knead dough and much more. Available in multiple colors, the Cuisinart Precision Stand Mixer is a smart and stylish addition to your kitchen.

KitchenAid vs Cuisinart stand mixers: which should you buy?

KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer

Buy the KitchenAid Artisan if you’re looking for the very best your money can buy; if the style and color of the machine are an important consideration; or if you tend to cook smaller servings of baked goods.

In our KitchenAid Artisan stand mixer review, we found that this mixer lives up to its reputation with the perfect capacity for most baking tasks and a reliable motor that won’t overheat, no matter how much you use it.

  • Sleek design
  • Easy to use and store
  • Great for small batches
  • Makes cakes in an instant
  • Three attachments
  • Optional attachments available online
  • It shakes a little when kneading dough
  • Some ingredients get stuck to the side

Cuisinart Precision Stand Mixer

Buy the Cuisinart Precision stand mixer if you want the best value option, or if you plan on cooking large servings of cake or cookies at a time.

The Cuisinart Precision stand mixer review also went very well, but we did find that the slightly larger capacity puts it at a disadvantage if you’re cooking smaller servings. If you’re making a single loaf of bread or a loaf cake, for example, the flat beater struggles to reach right to the bottom, which means the mixing can be less effective.

  • Dial with many speeds
  • Large 5.5 quart bowl
  • A powerful motor
  • The bowl has a handle
  • Lifting the tilt-head is straightforward
  • A reasonably priced option
  • Some of our ingredients got stuck to the side of the bowl
  • Fewer color options

Comparing the KitchenAid and Cuisinart mixers

KitchenAid has an immense range of stand mixers – the brand appears three separate times in our stand mixers buying guide. Cuisinart, by contrast, is best known for its Precision stand mixer. This is most directly comparable to the KitchenAid Artisan, which is also KitchenAid’s most popular stand mixer. If you’ve ever seen a KitchenAid mixer on someone’s Instagram or on a cooking show, it was likely an Artisan.

When you look at the spec differences between the KitchenAid Artisan and Cuisinart Precision, the Cuisinart is – on paper – the front-runner. It has a more powerful motor, more speeds, a marginally larger capacity, and the same attachments.

One other difference is that the bowl on the Cuisinart has a handle included, which is useful for pouring and scraping out cake batter and bread dough.

Which is better on price?

The KitchenAid Artisan usually retails for $399.99, whereas the Cuisinart Precision costs $249.99. You can keep reading to find out which mixer performs better, but if budget is a big part of your evaluation, the Cuisinart is a better value pick.

Which has better features?

On paper, the Cuisinart is a better value stand mixer. However, there are some perks to buying a KitchenAid too. The Cuisinart used to only have six colors: Onyx, Red, Bright Blue, Blue Mint, Chrome, and White. Recently, Cuisinart added some gorgeous pastels including Blushing Coral, Agave Green, and Arctic Blue. However, there’s still no comparison between this range and the available colors for the KitchenAid Artisan.

We cannot even list every color you can buy the KitchenAid Artisan in, but the total number is in excess of 40. If you want to pick a stand mixer to suit a specific look in your kitchen, the KitchenAid will be the best choice for you.

Aesthetically, the KitchenAid also wins out for me. The Cuisinart is slightly curvier and bulkier, but the KitchenAid has a classic sloping design. It’s all subjective, though.

Which is better at making cake?

The flat beater with the Cuisinart and the KitchenAid both work effectively at making cake, but we did find that the KitchenAid Artisan did a better job of creaming butter and sugar together without assistance. When we tested the Cuisinart, we had to go in with a spatula multiple times to scrape butter and sugar away from the sides of the bowl.

If you make a lot of cake, the KitchenAid is better for this. Because the Cuisinart has a larger bowl it is also more wide, which means the flat beater doesn’t touch all sides of the bowl when beating and whipping.

KitchenAid and Cuisinart stand mixers making bread, head-to-head on test

Which is better for bread?

We followed the same recipe when testing both the Artisan and Precision mixers. While it was close, Cuisinart did a better job.

The KitchenAid’s smaller motor had an effect here because you have to work on the lower speeds in order to not damage the machine.  The mixer moved around the counter when kneading, and we felt like we had to supervise to make sure it didn’t move too much or even fall over.

By contrast, Cuisinart did a very good job of working the bread dough. The motor was able to work at a higher speed, and we were able to make a great loaf of bread when working with this machine.

Which is best for speed control?

Stand mixers on test

The KitchenAid dial goes up to 10, but if you click it along you’ll find it only goes at six speeds. The Cuisinart has a dial, and there are 12 speeds to choose from. This dial also has a slow-start mode that prevents clouds of flour from exploding in your kitchen, which is a really nice touch.

Which is better for attachments?

Now, while you can remove the front panel from the Cuisinart to attach some add-ons, there are far fewer add-ons available with this mixer than the KitchenAid, which has everything from a food processor to a pasta maker attachment. There are five in total that you can buy for the Precision, but over 14 available for the Artisan.

Are KitchenAid and Cuisinart attachments interchangeable?

No, you can’t use the attachments for KitchenAid and Cuisinart mixers interchangeably. Or at least, that’s what the official guidance will tell you. Technically, the whisk, hook and flat beater from the Cuisinart Precision and the KitchenAid Artisan will fit into place on the opposing mixer, but there’s no saying if they’ll work as well on a different mixer, and it could even damage your machine if you use attachments that aren’t designed to fit onto the specific head of your mixer.

Where is KitchenAid made?

KitchenAid is a US-based company, and while not all its products are made here, its stand mixers are made in the USA.

By contrast, Cuisinart is a French company who mostly manufacture in China.

Does KitchenAid go on sale?

It’s not every day that you’ll find a KitchenAid mixer on sale but you can usually find a good deal around Black Friday on retailers such as Amazon or Macy’s. The Cuisinart Precision is already more affordable, and we have noticed that it will also go on sale more often throughout the year.

KitchenAid vs Cuisinart: which should you buy?

This depends on your needs. For a start, if you have a specific kitchen design that you want to adhere to, the KitchenAid has a larger range of colors and styles, and even custom bowls that you can buy online.

Budget-wise, the Cuisinart Precision is cheaper than the KitchenAid Artisan by about 50%, and while we found that making cake was trickier, it did perform a little better with bread. For the money, it’s the better value choice.

If we were going to buy one stand mixer, it would be the KitchenAid Artisan.

The central consideration when investing in a new stand mixer is whether to opt for a KitchenAid vs Cuisinart model. Which performs best, and more importantly since you’re spending a lot of cash, which is the best value for money? We’ve created a guide specifically for the best KitchenAid deals if that’s the brand you decide on, so you can scoop a saving on your small appliance.

We’ve been considering the differences between KitchenAid vs Cuisinart models for some time now and weighed up their respective pros and cons. And if you’ve seen our guide to the best stand mixers, then you’ll know that we think KitchenAid mixers come out on top, thanks to their robust mixing performance.

With that in mind, there’s still plenty of KitchenAid models, for different tasks, to sort through. And with Cuisinart battling it out in second place, it’s clear they have plenty to offer too.

There’s an extent to which the KitchenAid vs Cuisinart debate comes down to style and popularity. The KitchenAid brand has a place in many people’s minds due to their mixer’s iconic look, and you’ll probably recognize them from their part in the Great British Baking Show too. They’re also a staple on baking bloggers and Instagrammers’ feeds as a must-have item for whipping up cakes and other treats. But, looks aren’t everything, and Cuisinart does take the biscuit when it comes to offering up more affordable options. Keep reading to establish which is best for you, Kitchenaid or Cuisinart?

KitchenAid vs Cuisinart mixers

KitchenAid vs Cuisinart: The main differences

KitchenAid produces some of the most beautiful kitchen appliances out there. In particular, the KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer is one of the most coveted additions to kitchen counters everywhere. Mixers are increasingly bought for style and visual appeal, as well as the advantages they provide when it comes to home baking and making your own bread and cakes from scratch at home.

KitchenAid stand mixers deliver on style, and you’ll have over 40 colors to pick from if you opt for the iconic KitchenAid Classic Plus. The Classic Plus was a contender for the top spot in our stand mixer roundup, along with the Cuisinart Precision Master, because this is an unusually affordable model of KitchenAid stand mixer. When on sale it can even come in at a lower price than its Cuisinart competitor.

However, the Precision Master comes with a better warranty, bowl capacity, and number of speeds than either of its KitchenAid counterparts. It doesn’t have the iconic KitchenAid style and it’s available in fewer colors, but it’s still an attractive choice of stand mixer.

KitchenAid stand mixers offer a huge selection of bespoke colors and bowls, such as this warm copper.  (Image credit: KitchenAid)

With the Cuisinart, you can expect a less flawless execution with your baking. It’s a common complaint (and something we noticed in our review) that the whisk and paddle attachments on the Cuisinart stand mixer will leave any ingredients at the bottom or side of your bowl un-incorporated into your batter or mix.

This is simply fixed with a spatula, but it’s still not ideal for those recipes where you want to throw everything into a stand mixer and watch it come together. Instead of a lever control, the Cuisinart comes with a dial. This is slightly more difficult to get accustomed to than the typical KitchenAid lever control, but it’s a matter of preference, and you may even end up preferring the dial control.

Cuisinart has a higher capacity, better suited to large batches.  (Image credit: Cuisinart)

KitchenAid vs Cuisinart attachments

If you’re wondering if you should buy a KitchenAid or Cuisinart stand mixer, you only need to read our guide to see that KitchenAid took the cake for us. The KitchenAid Classic Plus has the iconic KitchenAid style and reliability but at a super reasonable price. Pair that with the deal of the day, and these stand mixers don’t have to break the bank.

The Cuisinart Precision Master stand mixer is typically lower price to the KitchenAid Artisan, but it does pack in a marginally larger capacity and more speed functions, which makes it a great value pick.

KitchenAid offers more attachments than Cuisinart. (Image credit: Amazon)

In terms of optional attachments, this is where KitchenAid really shines. KitchenAid stand mixers come with the ability to run dozens of attachments. These include:

  • Spiralizer
  • Food processor
  • Vegetable sheet cutter
  • Food sifter and scale
  • Slicer/shredder
  • Sausage stuffer
  • Food tray
  • Meat grinder
  • Fruit and vegetable strainer
  • Grain mill
  • Five pasta roller attachments
  • Ice cream maker
  • Pasta press
  • Citrus juicer

KitchenAid’s high-end pasta makers actually feature in our roundup of the best pasta makers, so these aren’t second-rate products you’ll get when you invest in an add-on KitchenAid appliance.

By comparison, Cuisinart has only a handful of attachments. These are less readily available to buy, and clearly offer fewer functions than the KitchenAid:

  • Pasta roller and cutter
  • Pasta extruder
  • Meat grinder
  • Frozen dessert maker
  • Spiralizer

KitchenAid vs Cuisinart: Which stand mixer should you buy?

If it’s just a stand mixer you’re looking for, a Cuisinart is a great choice, but if you want a mixer which can double as just about any kitchen appliance you could want, we suggest buying a KitchenAid.

Regardless of which KitchenAid stand mixer you buy you’ll still get the advantages of numerous extra attachments. However, these attachments aren’t a cost-saver. Many of them cost as much as you’d expect to pay for a standalone appliance.

If you’ve already got a spiralizer, meat grinder, or pasta maker, then it’s worth considering if the advantages of having a KitchenAid still apply to you. KitchenAid is the more premium brand, but Cuisinart still offers a few more features (such as a larger bowl and better warranty) for the money.

Kitchen mixers – understanding the terms

The presence of a nozzle for whipping liquid products.
It allows you to quickly and efficiently whip cream, eggs, as well as creams and batter (if there are no special nozzles for them). Most modern mixers are equipped with at least one such whisk.
Weight (0.67 to 9.5 kg)
Mixer weight (without bowl and stand).
Obviously, the lighter the hand mixer, the less tired the hand when using it. If you choose a device from the stationary category (see “Type”), this parameter is not so important. If you are planning to purchase a hand mixer, you should pay attention to its weight.
Bowl rotation
Possibility of rotation of the mixing container for stationary mixers (see “Type”).
For most models, the bowl can rotate using a special automatic drive. Thanks to this, the products are mixed more evenly.
Power cord length (1.0 to 1.7 m)
Power cord length.
It is desirable that the length of the mixer cord is at least 1 m. A cord that is too short will impede the operation of the appliance and reduce its safety level.
Protective cover for bowl
The presence of a lid for the bowl, preventing splashing of products. Typically, such a lid has an additional opening that allows you to add ingredients directly during mixing.
The presence of a special operating mode in which the engine runs with short pauses.
The mode is intended for processing of especially hard products, for example, ice.
Attachment release button
The possibility of automatic disconnection of nozzles after the end of the mixer.
Some expensive models are equipped with a special button that simplifies changing nozzles.
Number of nozzles (1 to 5)
The total number of attachments included with the mixer.
Dough hooks
The presence of a steam nozzle made of steel in the form of a spiral, designed to prepare thick and steep dough.
Body material
The material from which the mixer body is made.
More often there are models made of plastic – an inexpensive, lightweight and practical material. Models with stainless steel inserts are less common. Steel gives the device a more expensive and solid appearance.
Bowl material
The material from which the container of the stand mixer is made (see “Type”).
Bowls are made of plastic, glass or stainless steel. Plastic is an inexpensive and lightweight material, but it has a drawback – it is prone to deformation. Stainless steel bowls are slightly less common than plastic bowls. Steel is more expensive, but stronger. Glass containers are considered more environmentally friendly.
Power (from 20 to 1000 W)
Power consumption of the mixer.
Power determines the speed of the device and its performance. In other words, the more powerful the device, the more types of work it can perform. However, keep in mind that more powerful devices, as a rule, are more expensive and consume more electricity. Therefore, when choosing a mixer, you need to decide what tasks you intend to solve with it. If the device is needed only for whipping creams, making batter (for example, pancakes) and mixing “light” products, then an inexpensive 180-250 W model will be enough. If you plan to use a mixer for kneading denser dough, then you will need a “stronger” device with a power of 270 W or more. In low-power models, the whisks are made of metal and resemble a wire frame; they may not be able to cope with “heavy” dough. Whisks in powerful mixers have wider and more durable blades.
Puree attachment
The presence of a nozzle made of plastic, designed for the preparation of homogeneous thick dishes. With this nozzle, you can prepare purees, mousses, creams, etc. The nozzle is a round flat disc with guides.
blender attachment
The presence of a submersible blender nozzle in the mixer set.
The blender attachment is needed for making purees, baby food and sauces. The nozzle is a steel or plastic rod (leg) about 15 cm long with a two-blade knife at the end. The knives are protected by a special cap so that the prepared dishes do not splatter.
Bowl volume (0.8 to 6.9 l)
The maximum amount of food that can fit in the bowl. The larger the volume, the more ingredients can be processed in one cycle of work. The design of all bowls is designed in such a way that even in a large capacity (up to 4 liters) you can mix products in small portions. When choosing a mixer, it should be borne in mind that the volume of the bowl in which the products can mix well without splashing throughout the kitchen will be less than 0.2-0.5 liters of the total volume.
Cord winder
The presence of a special compartment on the body of the device for storing the power cord.
The cord compartment is useful if you rarely use the mixer, and the device lies in a box or in a cabinet for a long time, waiting in the wings. If the cord is wound randomly, it may break at the folds. The cord winder minimizes the risk of such breakage.
Nozzle holder
The presence of a special compartment or holder for storing the nozzles included in the kit.
This device can be designed for all nozzles or only for some of them, in addition, it can be built-in or removable.
Rubberized handle
Soft rubber coated mixer handle.
This makes working with the device more comfortable, preventing the handle from slipping in the palm of your hand.
Type of mixer depending on the design and method of application.
All mixers can be divided into two main groups: manual and stationary.
Hand mixers are low-power (150-240 W), they must be held in hand during operation. Stationary ones are fixed on a special stand – holder, equipped with a container (bowl) for mixing and do not require additional participation from a person. Bowl mixers are more expensive and have a more complex and bulky design, but they are more convenient to use: they free up your hands for other tasks, they cope with tough dough better, and you don’t have to decide in which container to mix and beat products optimally. Together with the bowl, the set always includes a stand, on which both the container and the mixer itself are attached. Some models are additionally equipped with a bowl rotation function (see “Bowl rotation”). Most stand mixers can be removed from the bowl and used manually. Hand mixers can be handy for making precise small portions (such as fresh baby food) and allow you to use any utensil without having to scrape down the sides of the bowl.
The ability to temporarily increase the speed of the mixer using a special function called turbo mode.
This function allows you to significantly increase the speed of rotation of the nozzles by pressing a button. Turbo mode turns on at the end of cooking for a speedy and high-quality completion of work. You can use it only for a few seconds, otherwise there is a risk of overheating of the motor. Turbo mode allows you to quickly turn especially soft and tender products into puree, break up lumps in the dough.
Universal Chopper
Chopper included.
This device is designed for making pate minced meat, chopping nuts, herbs, cheese, berries and other products in small quantities. Usually the chopper is a container with a lid, at the bottom of which an impeller knife is fixed.
Number of speeds (from 2 to 16)
Number of nozzle rotation speeds.
Usually the mixer has several speeds (usually from three to six, but sometimes more). The speed switch allows you to select the optimal mode for each type of product. Many manufacturers on their devices near the speed switch place small pictograms showing what kind of work this or that mode is suitable for.
