The curved screen is the hallmark of Samsung’s new top 9 series SUHD TVs. Samsung engineers were inspired by the curvature of the round grandstands of Rome’s Colosseum to create TVs equipped with such screens. When the viewer is in the center of this ancient arena or sits in front of a curved TV at an optimal distance of 3–4 m, both the stands and the surface of the TV screen are at an equidistant distance from it. The special comfort of perception and realism of the picture on a curved screen is explained by the fact that the eye falls on its surface at any point almost perpendicularly, while the edges of a flat screen are further away, and this causes geometric distortions (albeit not too obvious) and increases the likelihood the appearance of glare and color distortions, a decrease in contrast.

Design

The design concept of the curved SUHD TVs of the 9 series is that all the electronic stuffing and numerous interfaces are placed in an external unit that is connected to the TV with a cable through the branded connector with the telling name – One Connect.

This external electronic module solves several problems at once. Firstly, all the necessary connectors are easily accessible, and the user does not need to look for the right one on the back of the TV and reach for it with a cable, looking behind the TV screen. And in some cases, when the TV is against the wall or hanging on it, it is very difficult or even impossible to do this. Secondly, the aesthetic component of the problem with numerous cables is solved. If the connectors are located on the TV itself, when using several external signal sources, several cables stick out of the TV at once, and this “beard” has to be bundled and hidden, for example, behind the central pillar, otherwise everything looks very ugly.

If the TV is hanging on the wall, then this method will not help either. In our version with the One Connect block, it will be possible to use at least all the interfaces and still not see the cables, since this thin metal box can either be hidden in the bedside table or placed behind the TV, distributing the cables horizontally behind the block. Thirdly, moving the electronics to the external unit made the TV itself thinner and more beautiful.

The screen is framed by a thin aluminum frame, which makes the TV look light, almost airy and as if it dissolves into the surrounding space.

The top of the TV case is covered with a metal polished panel in the form of a month. The back panel in the upper part has a bevel back, and ventilation grilles are located on it.

The body of the device gradually becomes thinner from the middle to the edges, so that when viewed from the side, its real thickness is well concealed.

The back panel is also made of silver and, besides, embossed: it is all covered with thin vertical ribs. This design not only looks interesting, but, unlike models with a smooth back panel, on which defects, scratches and dirt are clearly visible, allows the 65JS9 TV to000 always looks neat from behind, even if you forgot to dust it off.

The TV screen stand has a complex shape: it moves back from the body at an angle of about 45 degrees, and at the bottom it branches, forming a kind of Latin letter Y, and protrudes forward beyond the “plane” of the screen, which gives the TV a high stability.

Thanks to the polished metal surface, the stand looks elegant, despite the fact that in fact it is quite massive at the back – due to the reflections of the environment, it, like the screen frame, dissolves into space.

But here, too, an optical illusion is used – the supporting “paws” expand slightly downwards, and their necessary rigidity is provided by twice their height. Designers for this want to say “Bravo!”

The One Connect external module, as already mentioned, connects to the TV through the connector of the same name, hidden in a niche on the rear panel.

Symmetrical with respect to the rack, in the same niche there is a socket for connecting the power cable. This connection option allows you to put the TV close to the wall or hang it on it. By the way, there are standard VESA mounting holes on the rear panel, and the kit includes special adapter rings and cables that allow you to securely mount a curved TV on a flat wall. We add that a bracket is provided in the upper part of the rack to fix the two mentioned cables.

The One Connect module is a flat aluminum box. The front panel and the left end of it are smooth, so it fits perfectly in design with the design of the TV itself.

Interfaces

The One Connect module is equipped with all the interfaces a user may need. On the right side there is an optical audio output for connecting an external audio system, two USB 2.0 ports for connecting USB-flash drives with content and an output for an IR module.

On the left rear panel there is a Common Interfase Plus slot for CAM cards that provide authorization in digital and satellite TV paid subscriptions.

To the right of it there are two sockets for connecting satellite receivers and one more for terrestrial TV antenna or cable TV.

Almost in the middle is a USB 3.0 port designed to work with external hard drives. Next – four HDMI inputs for receiving a signal from different sources (STB, DVI, MHL, ARC).

Closer to the right side of the rear panel is a combo jack for connecting external audio systems, an EX-link jack through which an RS-232 interface is implemented (often used for projectors and interactive panels), a proprietary One Connect connector for connecting the unit to a TV and LAN port for connecting to an Ethernet local network.

In addition, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth communication modules are integrated into the electronic unit. The first provides a wireless connection to the Internet and the exchange of information with computers and mobile devices via a local network or directly (Wi-Fi-Direct). The second is used to connect the TV with the remote control and with mobile devices.

Control

Sometimes TV users experience such an unfortunate event as losing the remote control. This deprives them of the ability to control the TV, but not in the case of Samsung. On the rear panel of the 65JS9000, on the left, there is a small control that combines a power button and a two-axis manipulator that allows you to perform all basic operations with TV settings.

But, of course, the full range of TV features is provided when controlled via an external remote control, including voice commands and cursor control in the Smart Hub application on the TV screen.

With its curved shape and clean lines, the remote control blends in well with the design of the TV.

The back surface has a relief and texture that prevents the remote control from slipping out of the palm of your hand.

The front has a microphone that allows voice control of the many functions of the Smart Hub system.

The remote control is well balanced and all controls are in the front.

To control modern Samsung TVs, you can use not only a branded remote control, but also any smartphone. It is enough to install the Samsung Smart View application on it and connect it to the TV via Wi-Fi.

From the moment you first get to know the Samsung 65JS9000 SUHD TV, the on-screen picture impresses with sharp details and faithful colors. In the commercials I watched, the most saturated colors were chosen, but with very bright and seemingly too saturated pure RGB colors, skin tones look quite natural.

Ultra High Definition (UHD) resolution delivers superb detail, four times the dot count of Full HD (3840 x 2160 on the 65JS9000).

Samsung Nano Crystal Color, Samsung’s proprietary version of Quantum Dot Display technology, provides a wider range of human color space than conventional LCDs, so rich and subdued colors look great.

A few more technologies – intelligent backlight Peak Illuminator, local dynamic dimming UHD Dimming and the HDR function (including via HDMI) “to expand the dynamic range of the picture – allow you to transfer all the halftones of even very contrasting scenes on the TV screen.

Clear Motion Rate technology, which increases the image refresh rate on the sensor, is responsible for obtaining a smooth and at the same time detailed picture in fast-paced video scenes.

The screen image looks best when the viewer is positioned in the optimal position – exactly in the middle in front of the screen. But in the case of the Samsung 65JS9000 TV, it was difficult to detect a decrease in picture contrast, color saturation, or any distortion of them, even when viewed from a rather sharp angle, being quite to the side of the TV, from where viewers are unlikely to actually look at the screen.

Of course, if you do not specially prepare the interior of the room, then when viewing from the side, it will not be possible to completely do without reflecting bright objects or light sources located opposite it in the glossy surface of the screen. However, even in the “wrong” room, there are no bright reflections on the screen.

Results

The concentration of the latest technology implemented by Samsung in the new curved TV 65JS9000 leaves a very strong impression on the results seen on the screen. In the course of testing, after viewing a large number of static and dynamic pictures of a very different nature, we did not find any reasons for nit-picking – except that on the other side of the screen everything looked even better than in real life. According to the developers, due to the reliability of quantum dot displays, Samsung’s latest SUHD TVs are able to transmit the same bright colors for many years to come without loss of quality or burn-in effect like OLED displays. In view of all of the above, it becomes obvious that having forked out for the purchase of such an expensive device, the buyer acquires the most advanced product that fully justifies every ruble invested.
