How to turn your love of video games into a profession: 3 ways that work
Work and study
October 7, 2021
We tell you what kind of specialists the gaming industry needs. Spoiler: you can enter gamedev even without development experience or design skills!
Last year was a breakthrough year for the global game development. The volume of the games market for the first time reached 177.8 billion dollars, and according to experts, in 2023 it will approach the mark of 200 billion. These data clearly show that the passion for video games can become a profitable profession. Several paths lead to the industry – surely among them there is one that is right for you.
1. Start making games
You can knock on the door of a studio that produces products you like. Pay attention to the development profile of the company, because the game is different game. Some studios are engaged in desktop applications, others are engaged in mobile applications, others create projects for consoles, and others create online products or casual games for social networks. You should immediately understand your own genre preferences. If you’re a dedicated fan of shooters like Call of Duty or arcade games like Need for Speed, you’re unlikely to get excited about creating social simulations like Love City.
In recent years, many companies have felt the trend towards gamification. Banks, manufacturers of goods, publishing houses are acquiring their own game development departments, and specialists are also needed there.
Game designer
This is a person who literally creates a game from scratch. His work begins with the preparation of the concept of the future product, thinking through the mechanics, characters, locations, graphics and plot. He is also involved in management: he chooses a framework for work, a way to set deadlines, criteria for evaluating effectiveness. In addition, a game designer must have an understanding of the main platforms for which the game is being created, and know what tools and technologies may be needed.
Developer
Image: Puhhha / Shutterstock
The game designer’s eternal technical companion, turning all his ideas into code. In addition to virtuoso programming, such a specialist should understand the specifics of the Unity or Unreal engines, optimize 2D and 3D games, and know English. Both a graduate of a specialized university and a self-taught person can become a gameplay developer. The main thing is a good portfolio and boundless love for algorithms.
UX/UI designer
UX (user experience) is the design of user experience, and UI (user interface) is the design of user interfaces. The task of UX / UI designers is to make the finished product so that it makes you want to enter the game again and again. To become a specialist in this field, you need to be at least professional in Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch and Figma, and at the very least, have a good understanding of behavioral psychology.
Screenwriter
In game development, this specialist thinks through plots, dialogues and even characters’ personalities. Quite often, especially in small companies, he has to combine verbal creativity with the work of a game designer, so knowledge of the features of engines and game mechanics is indispensable. The screenwriter also needs to have a lot of vision, understand how his audience lives, and (ideally) speak English.
Illustrator
Specialist who is responsible for visualizing all ideas. He draws characters and locations with shadows, perspective, in the right colors and with the smallest details. In addition, the illustrator creates materials for advertising and merchandise: covers, banners and stickers.
Animator
Game dev puppet. It brings to life the 2D and 3D models of characters drawn by the illustrator, endowing them with special features: gait, facial expressions, signature movements. To become an animator, you need to be very meticulous and actually merge into one with rather difficult software: 3ds Max, Maya and Blender.
Tester
The evil troll of any development team, but without him the product will never be released. This is a specialist who is looking for bugs and obvious inconsistencies of the game with user requests – in general, he is constantly trying to break what his colleagues have created. By the way, you can become a tester without particularly deep technical knowledge. You just need to love to play and understand a little about the whole internal kitchen of the project.
Bonus for those who don’t want to depend on a big studio: indie game creator
Are you a jack-of-all-trades and can’t stand “big and friendly” teams? The role of an indie developer might suit you. Indie games are created by one person or a very tiny team. Many people like them precisely because of their simplicity and lightness. But there is one problem: the market is so oversaturated that it is difficult to attract players even to a very cool project, but not promoted by the publisher.
2. Promote a gaming product
After the project is released, the promotion team steps in. She has to complete a million small and large tasks in order for the game to reach the consumer and start making a profit. Specialists use PR tools, marketing and sales techniques, create communities, collect feedback and set up monetization. Therefore, the success and popularity of the game largely depend on them.
Many people easily move into this category of professions from other industries, because deep knowledge in development is not needed here. For example, a marketer will have to deal with the usual promotion, but adjusted for the specifics of the gaming industry. However, in order to quickly understand the intricacies of game development, it is worth taking the appropriate courses.
Game analyst
Master of metrics, tables and expertise. It collects and analyzes data that helps to develop the game, from problems with completing levels to the effectiveness of ad placement. A game analyst calculates what will happen to the product in the long term, works with focus groups, conducts A / B testing – in general, helps the team answer the question “Where can I make money in this game?”.
Marketer
These sales and advertising sharks promote the title, expand the target audience, follow what is happening with competitors, release promotional materials, look for influencers and churn out creatives.
Community Manager
Specialist who works with the player community. A community manager is a human orchestra: he can combine the duties of a copywriter, marketer, SMS manager, event manager, technical support specialist, psychologist and top player. He collects opinions, works out comments, reacts to negativity, and sometimes just chats heart to heart with fans of the game. This activity is suitable for people who really love to communicate.
3. Make money on ready-made games
Game projects can also generate income for those who see no reason for themselves to participate in their creation. If you just love to play and do it well, try turning your hobby into a profession.
Streamer
Gorodenkoff / Shutterstock
Organizer and main player of online broadcasts. If you’re lucky, then streaming can become a source of income: subscriptions, advertising and generous donations from viewers bring very good income.
Game influencer
In essence, he is a blogger, but at the same time a deep expert in game development. If you really have something to say and show, then, as they say, like, write comments, click on the bell.
Cybersportsman
Professional gamer who participates in championships and competitions. By the way, Russia became the first country that decided to recognize eSports as an official sport.
Do you dream of working in the gaming industry, but don’t know where to start? Then join the six-hour broadcast with the participation of leading game development experts, which will be held on the website of the Russian Knowledge Society on October 15. Speakers will tell you how to become a professional in the field of game creation and build a successful career.
Game development is the main theme of the annual international career guidance campaign IT Knowledge Day, partnered by the Russian Society Znanie. The initiative is being implemented with the support of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, VK ecosystem projects, Russian universities and technology companies.
The broadcast will also be available on the campaign website and in the community on VKontakte on October 15 from 08:00 to 14:00 Moscow time.

In the footsteps of Google and Amazon: Netflix wants to play video games
According to a recent report from The Information, Netflix has a job opening for the position of head of the gaming business. It is not yet known whether the company will license content from existing game producers or develop its own projects. However, many experts are confident that this Netflix solution will almost certainly fail.
“I really don’t think he will succeed,” remarks Wedbush managing director Michael Pachter. “Developing a game is harder than it looks.”
Black Mirror: Bandersnatch is Netflix’s “interactive movie” where the viewer chooses how the story unfolds. Screenshot: Netflix. “THQ, Midway, Acclaim, 3DO, BAM, Eidos, Atari, Infogrames, Interplay are all examples of major failures in the gaming industry. They well illustrate all complexity of the given invention, – Pachter argues. “I don’t understand why Netflix thought they could develop and sell games.”
Joost van Droynen, author of One Up: Creativity, Competition, and the Global Video Game Business, shares Pachter’s skepticism. “Large corporations tend to fail in the gaming industry,” he notes. He cites Google’s Stadia, Amazon’s Luna, and Facebook’s attempts to enter this market as examples.
Over the past decade, Google, Amazon, and Facebook have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in games, but none of the companies have made significant progress.
Instead of taking a responsible approach to the creation of game projects, they focused on the organization of the service itself and distribution. Video game streaming service Google Stadia is a prime example.
Less than two years after Google announced a major game development initiative led by Assassin’s Creed creator Jade Raymond, the company has abandoned the project.
“Google has focused too much on using the platform for industry partners,” Phil Harrison, vice president of Google Stadia, notes in a blog post. In 2019, the company promised to create a new service that could compete with Nintendo, Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox.
Netflix owns the copyright to successful titles like Stranger Things and can use that advantage in games. But that’s not the problem.
“Creating games based on your own intellectual property is also quite difficult,” says Pachter. “Disney has failed at least three times.”
In recent years, some Disney games have become quite successful, such as 2018’s Spider-Man and Star Wars. Jedi: Fallen Order 2019of the year. However, large development companies are engaged in the creation of such games.
Image: Sony
The first game was released by Insomniac Games exclusively for the PlayStation 4 and sold over 20 million copies. A multi-platform game based on the Star Wars franchise with original characters and a story, it has sold over 10 million copies. At about $60 each, each game has generated more than $1 billion in sales.
There are probably two possible development paths for Netflix.
- Develop a game streaming service based on an existing one and spend years and hundreds of millions creating game franchises based on their intellectual property.
- Buy big game publishers for billions of dollars like EA or Ubisoft, similar to how Amazon bought MGM Studios.
Whichever path the company chooses, it will require not only large financial investments, but also long-term institutional support from Netflix.
The company has not yet announced its plans, but it is interested in investing more in games in the future. “Our audience appreciates the diversity and quality of our content,” the company said in a statement. She also likes to be directly involved in her favorite stories, for example, through interactive shows such as Bandersnatch and You vs. Wild, or games based on Stranger Things, Paper House, and To All the Boys.
