Set up Face ID on iPhone

Use Face ID (on supported models) to securely and conveniently unlock iPhone, authorize a purchase or payment, and sign in to many third-party apps. To do this, just take a look at the iPhone screen.

To use Face ID, you must also set up a passcode on your iPhone.

Set up Face ID or add an alternate look

• If you didn’t set up Face ID when you first set up your iPhone, go to Settings > Set Up Face ID and follow the on-screen instructions.

• To add a different appearance for Face ID to recognize, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Set Alternate Appearance and follow the on-screen instructions.

If you have physical restrictions, you can tap Accessibility Options while setting up Face ID. After that, when setting up face recognition, you will not have to perform the full range of head movements. Using Face ID will still be secure, but you will need to look at your iPhone from roughly the same angle.

Face ID also supports accessibility for visually impaired and blind users. To stop Face ID from requiring you to look at your iPhone screen with your eyes open, go to Settings > Accessibility and turn off Require Attention for Face ID. This feature turns off automatically if you turn on VoiceOver when you set up iPhone for the first time. See Change Face ID and Attention settings on iPhone.

Using Face ID with a mask

On iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone 14, you can use Face ID to unlock your phone when you wear a mask (or other object that covers your mouth and nose).

When Face ID in Mask is enabled, Face ID analyzes the unique features around a person’s eyes, working in conjunction with other Face ID options that are enabled in Settings > Face ID & Passcode.

Face ID is most accurate when it is set to only recognize the entire face.

Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode, then do any of the following:

• Enable Face ID while wearing a mask. Turn on Masked Face ID, then follow the on-screen instructions.

  Important! If you normally wear glasses, you can improve the accuracy of Face ID by wearing clear (not sunglasses) glasses when Face ID with Mask is turned on.

• Adding a pair of clear (not sunglasses) glasses to your look. Tap Add Points, then follow the on-screen instructions.

• Disable Face ID while wearing a mask. Disable “Face ID in mask”.

Or, while wearing a mask, you can use your Apple Watch to unlock any iPhone that supports Face ID. See Unlock iPhone with Apple Watch.

Temporarily disable Face ID

You can temporarily prevent iPhone from unlocking with Face ID.

1. Press and hold the side button and any of the volume buttons for 2 seconds.

2. When the sliders appear, press the side button to immediately lock iPhone.

   iPhone locks automatically if you don’t touch the screen for one to two minutes.

The next time you unlock iPhone, Face ID will turn on again after you enter your passcode.

Turn off Face ID

1. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode.

2. Do one of the following:

   • Turn off Face ID for certain activities. Disable one or more options.

   • Turn off Face ID for the masked face. Disable “Face ID in mask”.

   • Turn off Face ID. Tap Reset Face ID.

If your device is lost or stolen, you can prevent it from being unlocked using Face ID in Lost Mode in Find My iPhone. (See Find your device in the Find My app on iPhone).

And everything is great again. And it’s not just the cost of an old iPhone, but the fact that I really don’t like the process of transferring data to a new one.
