Best PS4 and PS5 Racing Games for 2023
If you’re anything like me, you can’t wait to get your hands on the best racing games for PS4 and PS5. I’ve been a fan of the genre for over two decades. Gran Turismo 4 on the PS2 was the first racing game that hooked me. That game, coupled with a massive stack of sport compact car racing magazines, paved the way for my all-out obsession. It changed the way I looked at motorsport and cars. For its time, GT4 was state of the art, with accurate reproductions of real-world tracks and over 700 cars. I remember lapping Laguna Seca in GT4 to memorize every turn on the night before my first real track day.
PlayStation racing has come a long way over the last 19 years. Whether you’re a serious racing enthusiast looking for a hard-core and accurate motorsports simulator, a casual autophile looking for a fun and fast arcade racer, or you’re just beginning to explore your love of cars and car culture, the perfect racing game is out there waiting for you. To help you in your search, I’ve rounded up the best racing and driving games for Sony’s PS4 and PS5 consoles.
Like I said in my rundown of the best Xbox racing games, this list is by no means exhaustive. It’s a collection of just the best driving and racing games for PlayStation consoles that I’ve personally played and enjoyed. I’ve played all these games on the PS4 Pro, but all of them are also playable on PS5, and some even take full advantage of the new generation’s extra horsepower and haptic DualSense controls.
Comparison of the best PS4 and PS5 racing games
Racing game | Price | |
Best PlayStation racing game overall | Gran Turismo 7 | $70 |
Best PlayStation circuit racing sim | Assetto Corsa Competizione | $30 |
Best PlayStation Formula One racing game | F1 2021 | $18 |
Best PlayStation arcade racer | Project Cars 3 | $23 |
Best PlayStation off-road racing game | Dirt 5 | $40 |
Best PlayStation rally racing sim | WRC 10 | $61 |
Best PlayStation open world racing game | The Crew 2 | $22 |
Best PlayStation demolition derby game | Wreckfest | $15 |

When it comes to racing sims on PlayStation consoles, Gran Turismo rules the roost.

Racers, start your engines
As I mentioned, this is by no means an exhaustive list and, with the next generation of consoles now pretty well established, I expect to rediscover enhanced versions of my favorites as well as a few new additions to this list. And for more picks, check out our list of best racing games for Xbox — most of which are cross-platform titles also available on PlayStation consoles. Have fun and drive safely… or go all out, full send; they’re just games after all.

top racing games on PS4
Many people know that the PlayStation 4 hasn’t had a huge selection of racing games in recent years. However, we were still able to compile a list of fast and furious races that will give you a feeling of devilish speed.
Gran Turismo Sport
Sony’s flagship racing franchise is a clear candidate for pole position in the near future, but right now the game is a few milliseconds behind the pace. It’s easy to criticize Gran Turismo Sport for what it lacks, but the game has an outstanding control model that’s perfectly tuned to both the DualShock 4 and the steering wheel. It’s on par with some of the best online racing games you’ll find on PS4. Gran Turismo Sport also looks a lot better than the competition, especially on PS4 Pro.
buy
Project CARS 2
While the game isn’t as feature-packed as the other titles, this sequel’s ability to seamlessly transition from conventional rallying to IndyCar karting is impressive. The fact that you can also mix and match whatever you want allows you to customize the game completely for yourself, making it incredibly versatile.
buy
DiRT Rally
Going back to the origins of Colin McRae Rally, which largely defined a generation on PSone, DiRT Rally is as tough as any racing game should be, requiring absolute precision on some of the most dangerous racing trails. Fully compatible with PlayStation VR, this intense title is capable of delivering thrills with ease.
buy
GRIP: Combat Racing
High-octane combat racing with cars that can accelerate to 1225 km / h, ride on walls and ceilings and briefly soar into the air thanks to anti-gravity bags. The vehicles are equipped with missiles and traps, so it is important not only to overtake your opponents, but also not to let yourself be knocked out. A good ideological heir to the cult Rollcage.
Buy Now
Need for Speed Heat
The next installment of the Need for Speed series takes the action to sunny Palm City, where a real drama unfolds between freedom and adrenaline-hungry street racers and cops chasing them. The gameplay is divided into legal daytime and illegal nighttime races, and the police are clingy enough to challenge the players. All this is accompanied by a killer soundtrack and detailed car customization.
Buy Now
The Crew 2
The Crew 2 is the sequel to Ubisoft’s not-too-successful arcade racing game. Players are back in the United States (slightly reduced), but the undercover racer plot has been replaced by a much more banal racing festival story, and the list of vehicles has expanded from cars and motorcycles to motor boats and planes. The game has some flaws, but overall it’s good fun.
Buy
GRID (2019)
A relaunch of the GRID series from Codemasters, where players can expect racing competitions in different modes and on different maps. The project boasts aggressive AI: rivals remember the player’s actions and react to them – if you actively push and cut, the AI will do the same.
Buy Now
Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled
A family-friendly game that turns out to be far from easy, it’s a hardcore arcade racing game that requires you to work hard to beat your opponents and reach the finish line. First of all, this applies to the local drift system, which requires getting used to. No less difficult are computer opponents and tests with a timer. Nevertheless, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is able to give a lot of positive emotions thanks to a bright picture, hurricane dynamics and funny characters.
Buy Now
Assetto Corsa
Realistic racing simulator with expensive cars, famous licensed tracks and detailed gameplay. Gamers will have to conquer racing championships in a single player campaign and in multiplayer competitions, while Assetto Corsa supports VR headsets, which allows you to immerse yourself in the gameplay even deeper.

Rocket League
Not so much racing as car football, this is a fun competitive game where players push the ball to try to hit the goal or the ring. There are a lot of modes, fireballs and customization items here, and the season system regularly replenishes the project with fresh content. Rocket League supports cross-platform play between console and PC owners, so there is never a shortage of opponents for hot matches here!
Buy now
TrackMania: Turbo
One of the few decent arcade racing games on PlayStation 4, Trackmania Turbo is full of lots of high-speed cars. The short race tracks are tough and very difficult to explore as you aim for a close to perfect chase. Multiplayer is even better, with plenty of options for competitive or co-op play, including a full two-player campaign. What’s more, there’s PSVR support and a track workshop that lets you create your own tracks. Thrill-seekers should definitely take a look at this game thanks to its lengthy challenges and simple controls.
buy now
Tiny Trax
Tiny Trax uses PlayStation VR to immerse you in the world’s coolest game room, creating a comfortable yet immersive virtual reality racing experience where cars literally surround you. The gameplay is quite simple but difficult to master as it gives you the challenge of finding the right point in the turn to maintain maximum acceleration. The game’s content isn’t big enough, but its excellent use of VR makes it one of the most original racing games on PS4.
buy
Redout: Lightspeed Edition
The space racing genre has been gone for a while, but is back for revenge. Redout is one of the games that really wants to be like WipEout, and it has been a pleasant surprise. We were particularly impressed by the excellent sound design, the sense of speed, and the intense boss races. While the game’s design may lack the sophistication that WipEout is known for, it’s still a fun and frantic arcade racing game that’s definitely worth playing.
buy
Onrush
The game from the developers who gave us noisy, colorful arcade racing games like MotorStorm and DriveClub. In the game, all vehicle classes boast unique abilities to help your team or hinder your opponent, and they all complement each other as you fight for victory in one of four modes. It’s a unique, bold and action-packed game that’s definitely a breath of fresh air for PS4 racing games.
buy
DiRT 4
The developers from Codemasters have extended the well-known DiRT Rally with a game aimed at a wider audience. DiRT 4 may not have the laser focusing of its predecessor, but exquisite rallying is fine and in place and plays fantastic no matter which mode you choose. The game also includes Rallycross, more straight-forward Landrush dirt racing, and more.
buy
F1 2018
F1 2018 continues the upward trend of the excellent sim series from Codemasters. This latest and so far the best part of the annual franchise features the return of French and German tracks, as well as all the modes we’ve been waiting for. Small improvements to the game make it the best Formula 1 title on PS4. If you love and follow this championship, F1 2018 is what you need.
buy
Burnout Paradise Remastered
EA’s first attempt at a remastered game went well enough that we saw the triumphant return of one of the best arcade racing games ever made. Burnout Paradise was ahead of its time on PS3 in many ways, and this re-release only proves that again. The game’s updated visuals look good, the open world racing is as nimble and fast as ever, and the innovative online features are still better than most other titles. With all the DLC and an exciting array of events and collectibles, you won’t be able to stop playing for at least a few hours.
buy
WipEout Omega Collection
The granddaddy of space racing made a triumphant return to the PlayStation in 2017 with a great re-release that includes all the content from WipEout HD, Fury and 2048. It’s a fast game that looks great and works impeccable. And the newly added VR support is incredibly well implemented, making this pack even better for PSVR owners. While we would have preferred a completely new entry in the franchise, the Omega Collection still serves as a great reminder of why WipEout is such a fan favorite.
