14 Best Over Ear Workout Headphones 2023

Sony WH-1000XM5

if you’re looking for a great pair of headphones for the gym or outdoor activities, the Sony WH-1000XM5 is definitely worth considering. I’ve used them before and here’s what I think.

In our test, I see the biggest advantage of these headphones is their long battery life. With around 27 hours of continuous playback time, you won’t have to worry about running out of juice during your workouts or outdoor adventures. Plus, they come with a durable carrying case that provides extra protection for when you’re on the go.

However, I did find that the fit of the headphones put pressure on the top of my head during extended use, which can be uncomfortable. But if you’re just using them for shorter workouts or runs, this may not be as big of an issue for you.

In terms of noise isolation, personally, I felt that the Sony WH-1000XM5 performs quite well overall. They do a good job of blocking out most external sounds, but I did notice that they struggled with low-frequency sounds like the rumble of bus engines. On the bright side, they did a great job of cancelling out other distracting noises like people talking around me.

Overall, I would definitely recommend the Sony WH-1000XM5 for anyone looking for a solid pair of headphones for their gym or outdoor activities. They have great battery life, are well-built, and provide good noise isolation. Just be mindful of the fit if you plan on using them for extended periods of time.

And Please note this could be only me and the fit could be much suit you better try out yourself.

Wired headphones: Wired headphones can be troublesome during workouts as the wires can tangle, get in the way, or even become a safety hazard if they get caught on equipment or objects. They may also restrict your range of motion.

Open-back headphones: Open-back headphones allow sound to leak in and out, which can be distracting for both you and those around you. They also do not provide adequate noise isolation, making it harder to focus on your workout or enjoy your music.

Cheap or low-quality headphones: Investing in quality headphones is crucial, especially for active use. Cheap headphones may not be durable enough to withstand sweat or intense movements, and they may have poor sound quality or connectivity issues.

Can you workout with headphones?

The Benefits Of Wearing Headphones During A Workout

Like most people, you probably enjoy jamming out to music while working out on Spotify or Apple Music. Whatever your personal taste, hip hop, rock, and rap sounds good through everyday headphones.

And while there’s nothing wrong with a little bit of gym-time tunes, you might be surprised to learn that wearing headphones can enhance your workout experience. Here’s how:

First thing, music can help you stay focused and motivated. Getting distracted during a workout can be easy, especially if you repeatedly do the same thing. But with good workout headphones on, you can block out the rest of the world and focus on your workout, thanks to features like sweat resistant ear pads.

And if you choose motivating songs, you’ll be more likely to push yourself harder and achieve your goals.

Second, music can help you stay in the zone. When you’re working out, it’s important to maintain a consistent level of intensity. But sometimes, it can be tough to keep yourself from slacking off.

Listening to music through in-ear headphones with soft ear cushions can help you stay in the zone and keep your intensity level up, whether you’re lifting weights or engaging in other forms of exercise.

Finally, music can make working out more fun. Let’s face it – working out isn’t always the most enjoyable activity. But when you’ve got a good pair of over-ear headphones for working out and playing tunes in your ears, it’s easier to forget the sweat and pain and enjoy the moment, especially if they have wireless charging capabilities.

So if you’re looking for a way to make your intense workouts more enjoyable, try throwing on some headphones with excellent noise cancellation and voice assistant features next time you hit the gym.

The Downsides To Over-Ear Headphones

Despite their many benefits, there are a few downsides which you should consider when it comes to over-ear headphones with features like wireless charging and touch controls.

For starters, their size. They are a bit bulkier than some prefer, as they stick out a bit from both the top and the sides of your head.

Also, some find over ear headphones too tight and do not like how these over-ear headphones sit, squeezing the sides of the head with too much pressure on the sides of the head with high clamping force. While this is part of the value for some, others might find it annoying, especially during long listening sessions with noise cancelation features.

Does Listening To Music Help My Workout?

For many people, working out is a chance to disconnect from the outside world and focus on their health and well-being. However, some find throwing on some of the best sounding headphones like Bose QuietComfort and listening to music can help improve their workout experience, thanks to their excellent audio quality.

Studies have shown that music can help to increase motivation and endurance, and it can also provide a distraction from pain and fatigue.

In addition, music can help to create a more positive mindset, which can lead to better performance during exercise.

What Are The Best Over-Ear Headphones For Working Out?

Bluetooth Over-Ear headphones are headphones that go over your ears. The ear cups on these headphones are typically larger than in-ear headphones and wireless earbuds, and will fit around your ears, not on your ears, providing a comfortable fit.

Over-the-ear headphones usually have better sound quality than on-ear headphones and wireless earbuds, but these sport headphones can also be more expensive.

When it comes to the best over ear headphones for working out, they can block out background noise with excellent noise cancellation while still delivering competitive sound quality you can hear for your workouts and hours of battery life.

It’s worth mentioning that some sports headphones will charge with a USB charging cable, while others might use wireless charging capabilities or a USB-C charging cable. Regardless of which type, it doesn’t impact the quality of the headphones. Just check the manufacturer’s details to see if it’s USB, USB-C port, or wireless.

Can I Wear These For Running?

Whether listening to music or immersive audio while working out, over-ear headphones for working out provide the ideal solution, delivering both comfort and style with features like ear cushions and hours of music playback. Their snug and comfortable fit blocks external noise, allowing you to focus on your workout free from distractions intensely.

Certain models have been specially designed for added protection against accidental sweat damage with innovative features like sweat and water resistant materials, secure-fit technology, and ear hooks so that you can exercise without worry.

Over-ear headphones may not provide the best experience when running and staying focused. While their larger size does make them awesome for noise cancelation, they can be unwieldy and uncomfortable on your head and ears during more intense physical activity due to clamping force.

Also, due to the extra weight, you have a greater chance of them slipping off or bouncing around while on the move – which could take your focus away from performing optimally. I have found ways to keep the headphones secure on my head, but this might vary from person to person.

In this situation, a better choice for running headphones would be lightweight sport earbuds or true wireless options with impressive sound quality if well balanced sound quality you can hear is still priority number one.

Ear Buds, In-Ear Or Over-Ear Headphones for Workout Out?

Whether you choose Bluetooth wireless buds or over-ear headphones depends on your needs. If you want to hear excellent sound quality, over-ear headphones (wired or wireless) for working out are typically the way to go.

The performance of all this is typically comparable, as no one types has longer battery life than the others.

However, wireless earbuds (the headphones with the over ear hook design that fits into your ear canal) might be better if you want something more comfortable and cheaper.

I recommend the Apple devices like the Apple Airpods or Airpods Max and other brands like Bose Sport Earbuds, Android devices like the Samsung Galaxy Buds, or Beats Fit Pro (Beats PowerBeats Pro) wireless headphones if you are considering the best wireless earbuds.

All sound good, have excellent Bluetooth range, and are perfect for working out with their long battery life and wireless charging capabilities.

How Much Are Over-Ear Headphones?

The price range can vary based on the features and specs of the item. Having said that, you can find them for under $100.

But for higher-quality headsets, you can expect to pay $200 to $400.

Sports and hearing loss – is there a connection? Weight training and hearing

Exercise is good for health. This is a truth familiar to everyone since childhood. Meanwhile, it is too general for unconditional acceptance. When implementing it, you must always take into account a number of circumstances in order not to harm yourself.

So, if you like exercising in a noisy gym, be careful: heavy physical activity combined with loud music can cause hearing loss

Although this is not a typical cause of hearing loss, nevertheless, it is definitely not worth excluding its possibility completely.

Weight training and hearing

Why does my ears get stuck during training?

Heavy physical activity (including during weight training) causes an increase in intracranial pressure, which in turn leads to an increase in intra-aural pressure.

This is especially evident when you hold your breath while lifting weights at the peak of tension

Physiologically, this is not much different from the pressure drops during climbing and descending during an air flight, when passengers get stuffy ears. How to prevent discomfort? Here are some tips for you:

  • Clear your ears beforehand (eg by yawning).
  • Do not lift too heavy weights and do not hold your breath.
  • If you have a cold but don’t want to stop exercising, put vasoconstrictor drops in your nose.

Why does my ears ring during exercise?

Increased pressure in the inner ear during intense exercise can lead to the development of a perilymphatic fistula. In simple terms, a perilymphatic fistula or fistula is a microtear or other defect in the thin membrane that separates the inner ear from the middle ear. At the peak of tension, due to an increase in intracranial pressure, lymph begins to flow out of the inner ear into the middle ear through this small opening. Clinical manifestations of this condition:

  • Tinnitus (noise or ringing in the ears).
  • Ear congestion.
  • Dizziness.
  • Sometimes – increased sound sensitivity.

What is the difference between a dropped barbell and a shotgun blast? Here, few people care about how to carefully put the sports equipment in place. Audiologist Rachel Raphael of Mercy Medical Center (Baltimore, USA), who is also a certified fitness instructor, figuratively compares the training “iron” with a firearm:

“I’ve never taken a sound level meter with me to the gym, but I find that even short-term exposure to the noise from falling barbells loaded with pancakes is comparable in hearing damage to a shotgun blast or the sound of an airbag being deployed”

Therefore, if you train regularly in such a gym, you risk hearing damage or tinnitus. Choose gyms with rubber flooring or strict instructors who monitor the observance of visitors to the rules for using sports equipment.

Loud music – an additional strain on the ears

Loud music is played in many gyms to increase motivation and create the proper mood for intense physical work. In the order of things, if the level of its volume reaches 90-100 dB and above. Add to this the constant hum from exercise bikes, treadmills, ellipsoids – and you get ideal conditions for the development of irreversible noise-induced hearing loss.

How do you know if the music is too loud? The recipe is simple: this is so if you leave the gym with congestion or ringing in your ears every time. You can also download the mobile noise measurement app to your smartphone.

Hearing will recover quickly at first. But with regular classes in conditions of excessive noise, it will inevitably deteriorate.

Cause – irreversible damage to the hair cells of the inner ear involved in sound transmission

Use headphones or ear plugs to protect yourself from exposure to loud music. Do not be afraid that training in silence will be less effective. According to a study by researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine published in the March 2021 issue of the journal Noise and Health, turning down the music volume does not affect the quality of your workout.

How to protect your hearing while exercising

Here are some simple tips:

  • See an audiologist immediately if you notice changes in your hearing during or after exercise.
  • Don’t overdo it . Use gentle working weights. This will prevent the development of a perilymphatic fistula.
  • Use earplugs if the music is too loud.
  • Eliminate breath holding during peak exertion to avoid increased intracranial pressure.
  • If you initially have hearing problems, do not play sports that can cause blows to the head or concussions , such as boxing or wrestling.
  • Do not drop the barbell or dumbbells on the floor . A barbell weighing about 100 kg dropped to the floor creates a noise of 140 dB. It’s actually a pistol shot right above your ear
  • Watch out for signs of hearing loss .

Stay safe while playing sports and stay healthy!

Why headphones hurt my ears and what to do about it

Headphones are a technology that has tightly entered our lives. It was once impossible to imagine the transmission of sound directly to the ear, but now it is our daily routine. However, many people do not attach importance to the correct choice of headphones, because they do not realize how much they can affect hearing. In this article, we will analyze the possible negative consequences of improper selection or use of headphones and try to answer the question: why can ears hurt from headphones?

What to do if your ears hurt from headphones

Like many other advances in technology, headphones are a complex device that affects a person intensely. The task of the user is to responsibly approach the choice of headphones in order not only to get comfortable wearing and high-quality sounds, but also not to spoil their own hearing.

What to do if the ears hurt from the headphones?

Do you take off large-sized headphones (ear pads and headband) and feel pain in your ears? It’s not the sound, but the fact that the headphones are incorrectly adjusted or simply do not fit you.

How to prevent pain in the ears from large headphones:

  • The ear pads should not press on the ear, and the headband should sit comfortably on the head.

  • The ear pads should tightly but gently cover the entire auricles, without squeezing or rubbing anywhere.

  • The design should not be too heavy.

If your ears already hurt from headphones, a light massage of the auricles will help you:

– pinch the earlobes between the thumb and forefinger and gently pull down, repeat 30-40 times;

– put open palms behind the ears and gently press the auricles to the head, as if folding the ear, repeat 20-30 times;

– put the folded index, middle and ring fingers behind the upper part of the auricle and gently bend them down, repeat 20-30 times;

– with your thumb and forefinger, grab the tragus (protruding cartilage covering the opening of the ear canal) and rotate it 180 degrees, repeat 15-20 times;

– cover the ears with open palms and perform 30-40 light patting movements.

Perform all actions carefully and gently. Massage will help disperse stagnant blood and relieve pain in the auricles.

Important : if the pain from the headphones in the ears does not go away for more than three hours, consult a doctor, it may be an injury.

What to do if the ears after the headphones hurt not from the outside, but from the inside?

Pain is generally a bad signal, and if you feel pain, then do not waste time looking for an answer on the Internet – consult a doctor. The count can go up to hours if the nerve or hair cells of the inner ear are affected.

Causes of ear pain after headphones:

  • too high volume. Hearing experts recommend not listening to music with headphones above 60% volume;

  • poor sound quality. Some headphones emit, in addition to the main sound, also side ones, such as background noises that are barely accessible or not at all invisible to a person. Such sound can have a severe effect on the hair cells of the inner ear, and with prolonged contact, your hearing may be impaired;

  • lack of noise reduction. Good headphones should either cover the entire ear with their ear cups or have digital noise cancellation. What is it for? When we turn up the music in our headphones so that we don’t hear the outside world, we don’t actually stop hearing sounds from outside. Just on top of what we usually hear, very loud music is also added. Bottom line: ear pain after headphones

    How to restore hearing after headphones

    If you have spent a lot of time with your headphones on and after taking them off, you feel that:

    • after the headphones laid the ear. What to do? Give your ear a little rest, and then carefully pinch your nose with your thumb and forefinger, inhale and try to exhale with tension through the pinched nose. Do not be zealous, you should not get hurt. If congestion persists, repeat after 10 minutes. If this method does not help you during the day, consult a doctor;

    • after the headphones, the ears hurt and throb from the inside, let the ears rest in silence. After using headphones or attending concerts and other noisy situations, such sensations often occur. If pain and throbbing have not gone away after 6 hours, see a doctor;

    • after the headphones, you stopped making out speech and understand that the full volume of the TV is not enough for you. These are warning signs of serious acoustic trauma. Seek immediate medical attention.

    How to improve hearing after headphones

    Unfortunately, hearing cannot be improved. The auditory system rests on nerve cells – hair. Too loud sound, prolonged wearing or faulty headphones kill hair cells, and they are not known to be restored.

    How to listen to music with headphones without harming yourself:

    • The volume is not higher than 60%;

    • using headphones no longer than 1.
