regulatory requirements and 6 solutions
When renovating a kitchen or simply updating it, numerous questions arise: how and where to arrange the kitchen set and household appliances. It is especially important to think over everything when the room is small and it is difficult to place everything at a sufficient distance.
Can a gas stove be placed next to a refrigerator? Isn’t it dangerous? Can I get a fine for incorrect placement? In this article, we will answer these questions in detail and offer solutions for compact kitchens.
Guidelines and regulations
Take a look at your kitchen and imagine an isosceles triangle. According to the recommendations, all household appliances should be placed in its corners. Thus, the devices will not interfere with each other’s work.
However, in Russia, kitchens are often small (5 or 6 m²), so there is absolutely nowhere to turn around. Therefore, you need to clearly understand whether it is possible, for example, to put a refrigerator next to the stove in order to avoid trouble and fines.
The answer is simple: is possible, but at a certain distance . Household appliances differ in power and thermal insulation, so before installing, read the manufacturer’s instructions: the technical data sheet always indicates the recommended distance between appliances. For example, Zanussi indicates a distance of 50 cm, and Bosch – only from 30.
0014 .
How to get around this limitation: ideally, set up a table. But if there is not enough space, then you can simply assemble a custom-made bedside table, where pots or various little things will be stored, in the form of sponges, brushes or household chemicals.
Why is it not recommended to install the stove next to the refrigerator?
It is worth noting that there are no fines or penalties for such a neighborhood. Moreover, it will not affect your security in any way. Why then is the minimum distance specified in the requirements?
It’s simple: the gas stove heats up during cooking, and therefore heat is transferred to all nearby surfaces. This is due to the fact that the device has no insulation. Therefore, if the walls of the refrigerator begin to heat up, then its compressor will work often and constantly at maximum power in order to achieve the optimal temperature inside.
The following problems may occur:
- permanent ice – since the compressor works more intensively, it means it freezes faster;
- spoiled appearance is not only permanent greasy stains on the surface of the refrigerator, but also swollen yellowed paint and cracked handles;
- end of warranty or even failure – manufacturers are aware of such problems with compressors when the life of the device is reduced, so they clearly stipulate that warranty service will be denied if installation requirements are violated;
- high electricity bills – the refrigerator will use much more electricity to maintain optimal temperatures;
- low comfort – the handles of pans and pans will rest against the wall of the appliance, and it will be possible to approach the stove from one side only.
6 ways to solve the problem
So, if the kitchen is small, how can you solve the problem with the minimum distance between the refrigerator and the stove? We have 6 practical solutions for you.
Apply thermal insulation material
The simplest, cheapest and most effective way. Buy fomisol or isolon, cut off a piece and stick it on the wall. Now you can not worry, the refrigerator is securely protected. However, heat will continue to accumulate at the top of the wall, so the next tip is also worth using.
Install a powerful extractor fan
It will capture all the heat that comes from the stove and reduce the heating of the refrigerator.
Built into cabinet
In this way, the walls of the appliance will be protected not only from heat, but also from splashes of grease. For maximum efficiency, you can also stick heat-insulating material.
Install a partition wall
If you can’t fit the duct, you can get by with just one wall of chipboard, plywood, drywall or tempered glass. Don’t forget about the thermal insulation layer.
Replace your stove or refrigerator with narrow versions
This option is ideal if you have just started planning your future kitchen. By placing such a refrigerator (up to 55 cm) or a stove with only two burners, you can win the necessary centimeters. As practice shows, two burners are completely enough for an average family.
Take the refrigerator out of the kitchen
If none of the methods above worked, then it is worth taking a radical approach to solving the problem.
Conclusions
So let’s briefly summarize. You can install a gas stove next to the refrigerator, but at a distance of at least 25 centimeters. You can break it, there will be no penalties. However, this can lead to equipment failure. Therefore, it is necessary to secure the equipment: there are many options, from a simple sticker of a layer of thermal insulation to transferring the unit to the hallway.
Is it possible to put a refrigerator next to a stove in the kitchen: 10 facts
Today we will discuss whether it is possible to put a refrigerator next to a gas or electric stove in the kitchen. We will answer right away – it is possible, but not necessary! But why this should not be done – the question is already quite extensive and we will fully reveal it in this article.
But, if you really have no way out, then there is an opportunity to minimize the risks of such a neighborhood. And we will also tell you this and show you with examples how to arrange everything.
How far should the refrigerator be from the stove?
Ideally, there should be some kind of cabinet between the refrigerator and the stove, preferably at least 25 centimeters wide. And if there’s more, it’s even better. And not only in terms of safety, but also convenience.
Why shouldn’t a refrigerator be placed next to a stove?
There are a lot of arguments against it, ranging from the usual loss of comfort to the premature failure of the refrigerator. Moreover, we draw your attention to the fact that there is no difference whether to put a refrigerator next to a gas stove or an electric one. The sides of them are heated in the same way, especially when it comes to a working oven. But let’s go in order.
The heat from the stove makes the refrigerator work to the limit
Some people think that the proximity to a hot stove can cause the compartment in the refrigerator to not cool very well, but that’s all. Rather, temporarily heat up from the heat. That is, it is worth a little wind up and the problem will be solved.
But it’s not that simple. Everything is just the opposite. The warmer it is around, the more intensively the compressor catches up with cold … And the optimum temperature will not fall in the refrigerator, no. Only now, for the technology itself, this state of affairs is completely unhelpful.
The refrigerator is designed for certain intervals of automatic switching on of the compressor. But when the temperature rises from the outside, the compressor is forced to work simply for wear and tear in order to maintain the desired temperature.
Naturally, the service life of equipment, in this case, is many times reduced. Especially if you have a large family and the stove works very often. Heat the same kettle five times a day, boil some soup, heat some dish…
And even if you just fried an egg, the side of the stove does not heat up and cool down as quickly as it seems. Heat, accordingly, first of all gets to the adjacent side of the refrigerator and keeps the elevated temperature for a long time.
And the compressor turns on, turns on, without breaks for lunch and dinner. And even without the breaks.
However, this is all written in the instructions for the refrigerator. But, if you don’t believe, you can ask any workshop and the specialist’s answer will be unequivocal: you shouldn’t do this.
Although, if you are so rich that you change refrigerators like gloves, then why not? The compressor will “fly” in five years (or even a little earlier) – buy new equipment, and that’s it.
Electricity bills
And not only do you just “kill” the motor of your refrigerator, you also regularly overpay for electricity. The refrigerator “pulls” a lot without it, but if you force it to work 5-6 times more intensively, you yourself understand how much it will cost.
After all, in order to cool the chamber, the refrigerator needs electricity to “jump”. So think about whether it is profitable to arrange the elements of the kitchen in this way. But, if you are rich, this argument will not convince you either. Then maybe the next one will sound sane?
Food spoilage
Similar “swings” are not in vain for the internal microclimate of the refrigerator chamber. There is no cooling stability, you understand, therefore, it will not work in any way to maintain an even temperature.
And as a result, sometimes the products will simply freeze slightly. This is especially bad for fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs. After a bunch of parsley is covered with a thin crust of ice, the smell will almost disappear and there will be almost no taste left.
Also, red caviar does not “like” freezing. It becomes completely different in taste, deformed.
Of course, this will not happen immediately, but after a couple of years of equipment operation in a similar mode. And further! The freezer will also be covered with ice. And it will have to be cleaned much more often than under normal conditions.
Difficulty in dealing with greasy drops on the refrigerator walls
Another minus. At first it seems: what’s wrong with that? I’ll cook – immediately wipe the splashes. But, as it always happens, it immediately becomes too lazy to wipe, the drops dry up tightly, then look ugly against the background of the snow-white sidewall of the refrigerator …
But getting rid of them is not so easy now, because the delicate enamel of the refrigerator is not a ceramic “apron” on the wall, and it will not withstand rubbing with an iron brush.
In general, you will have to keep an eye on this case all the time and do not forget to wipe immediately. And it’s not good, it’s annoying.
Of course, if you have absolutely no other way to arrange the elements, then we will tell you how to protect the refrigerator from grease. But, nevertheless, we insist that you once again think carefully.
Inconvenience of cooking – you can only approach the stove from one side
This is really very difficult to maneuver. For example, if you use three burners at once, then it will be very inconvenient to get close to the one next to the wall of the refrigerator. The handles of the dishes and your own elbows will beat against this wall.
And putting some utensils needed during cooking around the stove will not be so convenient. Yes, there is nowhere to put the same cover – already an inconvenience.
And finally: feng shui against!
For a snack of all the minuses – here you have the opinion of Feng Shui. For some reason, the refrigerator is considered an object that personifies the element of Water. But the stove is Fire. And these two things do not coexist in any way, which means they bring a negative aura into the house, thicken the climate of your apartment and fill it with disturbing fluctuations…
which you, without thinking, put next to the stove.
What alternatives are there for refrigerator placement?
If our beliefs have penetrated you to the core, then you need to abandon this idea and look for another place for the refrigerator.
Unfortunately, we do not know your layout, but for some reason we assume that your kitchenette is quite tiny, which means that most likely you are the owner of a Khrushchev.
So, if this is the case, then it really is a bad thing. There are no adjoining pantries in Khrushchevs, in the niche of which you can put a refrigerator, or a balcony that can be combined with a kitchen and take equipment out there.
But on the other hand, Khrushchev houses have a wonderful plus – the interior partitions there are not concrete and not load-bearing. Therefore, if your refrigerator does not fit well on the opposite wall, then you can simply make a small opening in the wall between the kitchen and the living room and build a niche out of it.
Thus, the kitchen will remain uncluttered, the refrigerator door will be flush with the wall, but in its place you can completely install a washing machine. This, after all, is also a problem of Khrushchevs, with their two-meter baths.
And the fact that the wall in the living room will not be even, but with a drop, is even interesting. The ledge can be beautifully beaten as you like, hang pictures, shelves on it.
Also: when looking for another place for a refrigerator, do not forget that it is not recommended to put it not only next to the stove, but also to the radiator. It will be the same, if not worse. Heating in this case is seasonal, but continuous for many months.
The same applies to the gas pipe. She is warming up, which means she is a bad neighbor for the refrigerator and he does not belong near her.
How can you minimize the risk of having a stove and refrigerator next to each other?
If you have reached this block, then our “horror stories” certainly did not impress you and our rational proposals for moving the refrigerator did not find a response in your soul.
Well, if you really want to put these two things side by side, then you definitely need to separate them somehow, at least with some small partition. Of course, the thicker the insulation, the better, but than nothing at all, a thin piece of some material is still better.
We will give you an example of the most popular options, and you already choose which one you like best.
Before we start looking at thermal insulation with examples, I would like to note this:
It is not worth fixing the shield that will be located between the stove and the refrigerator.
Or rather, fasten “tightly”, for example, with strong glue, such as “liquid nails”, because, who knows, maybe you will ever have a rearrangement and this piece of the plate will interfere?
It is best to buy double-sided adhesive tape, it holds very firmly and use it to stick the shield to the surface of the refrigerator. Yes, it is the refrigerator, because the heated sidewall of the stove will simply melt this glue and nothing will stick.
So, let’s look at protection options.
Plain chipboard screen protector
You can simply buy a piece of laminated chipboard and put it between the stove and the refrigerator. Do not forget only that the side cut will need to be treated with adhesive tape, and this must be ordered at the place of cutting the sheets.
Be sure to match the color of the kitchen furniture. It would be ideal if it were exactly the same as the main array of the kitchen.
Of course, this shield is not for centuries, because chipboard is afraid of hot and moisture, which means that in a few years it may lose its appearance. But, such a thing is very inexpensive and we think you will not go broke if you have to buy another sheet in a couple of years.
Protective screen with tiles
But this option is much more interesting. It will be much easier to wash it and such a design will look more organic (especially if the tile matches the existing “apron”).
In this case, you need to buy not a chipboard sheet, but rather OSB, on which the tile is perfectly glued with special glue. Also, a sheet of thick drywall is suitable. But here do not forget that the gaps between the tiles will need to be well covered up, in order to avoid moisture getting on the drywall.
Protective screen with foil, mirror and glass
This is a great option. Foil or a mirror perfectly reflects heat, and such a partition can be much thinner than other options. The only negative is that the specular reflection is out of place, you can remove it with the help of corrugated glass superimposed on top.
This is the most expensive method, but also the most efficient. The refrigerator will practically not feel the heat from the stove, which means it will serve you faithfully for much longer. In any case, heat reflection is better than simple thermal insulation.
But if you combine these two ways, it will be all right. That is, put a thick shield, and stick foil on top of it.
