Ultrasonic gas flow meter with clamp-on sensors
The PT878GC portable ultrasonic gas flow meter with clamp-on sensors is designed to measure the flow of most gases.
The PT878GC is a pulse time ultrasonic flow meter that combines the performance of a stationary gas flow meter with the advantages of a portable instrument.
Historically, flow measurement using clamp-on ultrasonic transducers has been limited to liquid media only. Existing technologies could not work on metal pipes containing gas. A few years ago, GE Panametrics developed a new technology that extended the use of clamp-on ultrasonic sensors to the measurement of gas flow, including high or low pressure pipes made of metals and most other materials.
Gas meter models
The PT878GC is available in two models: PT878GC-01 covers pipes from 3/4″ to 12″ (20 to 300mm), PT878GC-02 covers 4″ to 24″ (100 to 300mm). The flowmeter provides an analog output signal (0/4-20 mA) proportional to the flow velocity or volumetric flow rate of clean, dry gases, while measuring velocity in the range of ±0.3 m/s to ±40 m/s. The device also has a frequency or pulse output for summation.
It is possible to save data about measurement objects in open access files. The flowmeter can operate on rechargeable or alkaline batteries for up to 8 hours.
This flowmeter, which is small in size and weight, allows you to display the results of measurements, both in digital and graphical form on the screen of the liquid crystal display with electroluminescent backlight. The memory of the device allows you to record and store more than 100,000 measured data. The PT878GC allows you to transfer or print recorded data, both in real time and data stored in memory. The context-sensitive online help function (hints) will prompt the user how to take measurements correctly. The flowmeter has internal diagnostic and troubleshooting capabilities to help identify and correct problems with the meter and transmitters.
How it works
The PT878GC is a pulse time ultrasonic flow meter. Time-pulse flow measurement is based on the following principle: when ultrasonic pulses propagate through a moving liquid or gas, pulses propagating in the direction of the flow (downstream) move faster than pulses propagating upstream (upstream).
The gas flow meter uses various digital signal processing techniques, including cross-correlation, to determine the time difference of the pulses and calculate the flow rate.
During operation, both transducers alternately work as generators and receivers of ultrasonic signals. When mounted on a pipe, they are acoustically coupled to each other so that each of the transducers can receive the ultrasonic signals transmitted by the other transducer. Thus, each of the transducers works as a generator, transmitting a certain number of acoustic impulses, and as a receiver, receiving an identical number of impulses.
The flow meter measures the time interval between the transmission and reception of ultrasonic signals in both directions. When the gas in the pipe is stationary, the downstream signal propagation time is equal to the signal propagation time against the flow direction. When gas moves, the signal propagation time in the flow direction is less than the signal propagation time against the flow direction.
The difference between the acoustic signal propagation times in the direction of the flow and against it is proportional to the velocity of the flowing gas, and the sign of this difference indicates the direction of the flow.
Application
The PT878GC flow meter can be used to measure the flow of virtually any gas. It is most appropriate to use it to measure the flow of aggressive, toxic, high-purity or sterile gases, or in such tasks where violation of the integrity of the pipe wall is undesirable. Since there is no need to cut into the pipeline, installation costs are significantly reduced. The instrument has no wetted parts or moving parts, causes no pressure loss and has a very large dynamic range. The portable ultrasonic gas flow meter can measure the flow of the following gases:
- Natural gas
- Compressed air
- Combustible gases
- Aggressive gases
- Toxic gases
- High purity gases
- Air separation gases
The flow meter has been extensively tested on metal pipes containing air, hydrogen, natural gas and other gases in a wide range of pipe diameters from 4 to 24 inches.
