New wave: sound in the films of Jean-Luc Godard

Today, the 13th, though not Friday, still risks becoming the worst day of the week. At the age of 91, the great French-Swiss director Jean-Luc Godard, who, judging by his energy, could still outlive us all, has died. For some reason, it seems that he died, like his most famous hero Michel Poicart, “on his last breath.” Without forgetting about our mission, today we will remember how the eternal experimenter worked with sound in his cinema.
Speaking to another director, Wim Wenders, in 1992, Godard described his approach to sound design as follows: “I start at the editing table, looking at shots without sound. Then I play the sound without pictures. Only then do I try them together <...> I can replace part of the dialogue with a dog barking or insert a sonata. I experiment until I’m satisfied.” From here you can see that the sound for Jean-Luc is a separate, independent element, the same as the image. A striking example: the film “Male-Female” (1966), where the dialogues of the main characters seem to live their own lives, superimposed on frames that are not related to them. The same “out of sync” is already noticeable in the first film “Breathless” (1960), where the sound, often screaming, sometimes does not know how it turns out here or there, but at the same time fixes and structures the scenes.
At the same time, in earlier works, the director tries to bring cinema closer to reality. In one of his hits, the hard and sad “Live Your Life” (1962), he innovatively recorded all the dialogue and street noise where the shooting was going on, without any dubbing and post-processing. The only “extraneous” sound was a play by Michel Legrand, constantly repeating and not reaching a climax.
Godard’s attitude to music in films (at least in his early work) is precisely this: if it exists, it will be repeated over and over again, emphasizing the main feeling of the film – whether it be disappointment, loneliness or something else. Thus, in the monumental “Contempt” (1963), the heavy symphonic theme of Georges Delerue literally penetrates the viewer’s veins and begins to live inside.
Godard would not be Godard if he also did not show interest in silence. In The Outsider Gang (1964), he masterfully creates an awkward pause – the three heroes, not knowing what else to talk about, fall silent for 36 seconds. And together with them, everything around falls silent – all sounds from the tape disappear. While performing at the Cannes Film Festival at 19In the 1990s, the director said that his silent film would have been better, and that the soundtrack that the audience would “see” should make an even greater impression on them.
In 2018, the New York project Soundwalk Collective released the LP What We Live Behind with recordings from Jean-Luc’s personal archives – a variety of sounds between takes, including the director’s voice, as well as unsuccessful takes and, of course, silence. Sound engineers and sound designers create an impressionistic journey through Godard’s memory and world. In essence, from the individual pieces of the Soundwalk Collective, a single sound canvas is put together, giving an idea of what the sound was for the classic.
Perhaps the best solution for tonight would be to revisit something from Godard and listen. And then compare with an earlier or later work of his. The chance that you will encounter something alive and non-trivial is not just great.
