How to Change HDMI Output to Input on Laptop
The HDMI port in the laptop is useful that allows users to connect their laptop to a bigger screen to watch movies or play games. Note: In my case, I have connected the Raspberry Pi device to a laptop using the HDMI cable and capture card. The HDMI capture card is inserted into the laptop as it acts as a monitor for the Raspberry Pi display. While the HDMI port’s one end is inserted into the Raspberry Pi device and the other into the capture card device port.
Step 3: Download and install OBS software on your laptop from here and right click on the “Sources” option and select the “Video Capture Device” from the “Add” option.
Step 4: Click “OK” to confirm adding the video capture device.
Step 5: Double-click on the “Video Capture Device” option.
Step 6: Select the “USB Video” option to view the other system display on the OBS Studio.
You will see the other device’s desktop display on the OBS software.
You can change the screen resolution according to your choice by selecting the “Custom” option and then choosing the resolution.
At this point, you have successfully viewed other system’s desktop over your laptop using the HDMI capture card. The same process can be done for Xbox360 or PS4.

Method 2: Without an External Source
If you don’t want to spend money purchasing a capture device to change HDMI output to the input on a laptop, then there is another solution. It only requires software to be downloaded on your laptop and allows screen sharing to display the content of another device onto your laptop. Software like Spacedesk and VNC allows you to view the display of other devices on your laptop screen that is streaming over your WiFi connection.
How to Use Spacedesk
Let me show you how you can use software like Space desk using the following steps:
Step 1: Install the Spacedesk server and client on both systems and this is a better approach since you can switch the displays between two systems according to your choice.
The server will run in the background, and it can be downloaded from here.
While for client, you can download and install the latest version from Microsoft Store.
Step 2: Open the client app on any system and you will be able to see the server on the application dashboard.
Step 3: Click on the “Connection” to view the other laptop display on your other laptop.
Note: In my case, I have accessed the OBS Studio Software on the client laptop from my server laptop, which is already opened in full screen mode on the server laptop.
Step 4: Click on the screen and select the “Take control” button to get full control over the client system from the server.
This way, you can see the one laptop/system output on your laptop.
To use VNC for displaying another system, you can follow the guide here, which shows accessing a Linux system on a laptop. The same approach will be used for displaying two windows laptops.
Method 3: Wirelessly Connect Two Devices
Users interested in viewing one device’s display on a laptop and controlling its functionalities can use the wireless option to perform this operation. For this purpose, the users must follow the below-given steps:

Step 1: Go to the “System” section on one laptop’s “Settings” option.
Step 2: Select “Projecting to this PC” option and select “Optional features”.
Step 3: Select “Add a feature” option.
Step 4: Search “Wireless Display” and install it on your system.

Note: You must perform these steps for both laptops.
Step 5: After the installation, open the “Connect app” on your first laptop.

The HDMI interface allows you to transfer image and sound to displays in high resolution (even 8K). But, so that the signal is not lost during transmission, and the picture is not distorted, the cable length should be no more than 5 meters.
Since its inception (2002), the interface has gone through several stages of development. To connect a laptop to a monitor or TV via the HDMI output, you need to:
- Turn off devices.
- If you’re connecting to a TV with a cable TV plugged in, be sure to unplug that as well (protect your ports from burnout!).
- Connect the port of the first and second device with a cable.
- Turn on the display and load the notebook operating system.
- At this point, a picture should appear on the second screen. In the display settings (with several channels of information output), select the desired one.
- If there is no image or you need to set up another option for displaying information, press + I and go to the “System” – “Display” section.
- Scroll down to the Display section and select one of the four display options.
- Among the available ones are: duplicate these screens, expand the visible area, picture only on the main screen (on the laptop screen), picture only on the second screen (on the connected display).
- Other settings are made in the “Advanced Display Settings” section. For example, there you can flip it by 90 degree screen display.
When connecting two devices with a single cable, there may be problems with either picture or sound. How to enable seamless picture and sound output via HDMI on a laptop? Follow the simple tips:

Why is the HDMI port afraid of burnout?
Connecting a powered computer or laptop to the HDMI port of a monitor or TV can burn the ports. The fact is that there is a power supply voltage on the PC case. If a cable TV antenna is connected to the TV, then the “Earth” on the TV side has zero potential. When connecting the switched on laptop to the TV, due to the potential difference, a current will run through the HDMI cable, which the port cannot handle. The connector does not have additional protection with power supply circuits, and its contacts go directly to the chip. The chip cannot withstand the load and simply burns.
Connecting a switched on laptop and a TV is generally not as dangerous as a PC and a TV, but “hot plugging” of these two devices does not guarantee 100% protection. Also, hot plugging in general can be done between devices that are powered by their own battery (for example, a camcorder).
A quality male-to-male HDMI cable is required to connect the laptop and display. The main thing is to follow one simple rule: connect devices to each other with a completely disconnected power supply.

Usually located on the sides or back of a laptop, these ports help expand functionality and provide connection points for input devices, external storage, networking, and more. Understanding these ports and knowing which of your peripherals will connect easily and which will require adapters will help you make a more informed decision when looking for the perfect laptop for your needs.
The 3.5 mm audio jack, also known as the headphone jack, is the most common audio port on modern laptops. Along with audio input and output, it also allows you to connect most wired headphones and speakers. Some older laptops have two audio jacks that separate microphone and audio, but modern models use the same port for both.

Some notebook manufacturers have chosen not to include an audio jack on recent models. DisplayPort is a digital display connection used to output video and audio from a laptop to a video display such as a monitor. While some TVs are equipped with DisplayPort connectors, it is most commonly found on computer monitors.
Originally designed to replace VGA and DVI connections between computers and monitors, it has become the most advanced connection for displaying images on laptops today, challenging HDMI for display interface dominance.
The latest iteration is DisplayPort 2.0, released in 2019, which has increased bandwidth to 77.37 Gbps. Unlike other connections, DisplayPort allows you to use multiple monitors through a single connection.
In addition, DisplayPort supports AMD’s FreeSync and Nvidia’s G-Sync technologies for what’s known as “tearless gaming” (assuming your monitor also supports these technologies). Each iteration of DisplayPort has improved data rates, as well as increased resolution and refresh rate:
- DisplayPort 1.2: Supports resolutions up to 4K at 60Hz.
- DisplayPort 1.3: Supports resolutions up to 4K@120Hz or 8K@30Hz.
- DisplayPort 1.4: Supports resolutions up to 8K at 60Hz and supports HDR
- DisplayPort 2.0: Supports 16K resolutions (with HDR) at 60Hz and 10K resolutions (without HDR) at 80Hz.
Most laptops today use the smaller mini DisplayPort connection or USB Type-C ports to transmit DisplayPort signals. Unlike regular DisplayPort, outputting to more than one mini DisplayPort display will require a Multistream Transport Hub (MST).

DVI (Digital Visual Interface) is used to connect a video source such as a notebook to a display such as an external monitor. It was developed in the late 90s with the goal of replacing analog VGA technology with lossless digital video.
Although this port is not as common on modern laptops, it is still present on many external monitors with Full-HD or lower resolutions. One DVI connection can output video up to UXGA 19 resolution20x1200 at 60Hz, but higher resolution output requires a dedicated dual link DVI connection. The

DVI laptop is often the best option for outputting laptop video to external budget displays that don’t have more modern connectors like HDMI or DisplayPort. However, one thing to note is that DVI connections only support video signals and do not output audio. If you have a laptop without a DVI port but want to connect to an external display using DVI, you will need an HDMI-to-DVI or DisplayPort-to-DVI cable.
Ethernet ports allow laptops to connect directly to wired networks. Although Ethernet ports are becoming less common on laptops due to the spread of Wi-Fi, a wired Ethernet connection is still the most reliable way to connect to high-speed Internet. In places where wireless signals may be weaker, Ethernet overcomes this problem with a direct connection.
Modern Ethernet is also known as Gigabit Ethernet, which means that the connection speed is 1 Gbps or higher. Ethernet connections are categorized by Category (or Cat) type, and the latest Cat 8 standard allows for maximum speeds of up to 40Gbps while maintaining backwards compatibility with older category types.
Notebook Ethernet Port Many newer and thinner consumer notebooks no longer have Ethernet ports, but they are still found on many business notebooks. If your laptop does not have a built-in Ethernet port, you can purchase a USB to Ethernet adapter or use a docking station.
HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is the most common way to connect a laptop to a video display or home entertainment device. Many TVs, external computer monitors, and projectors also have HDMI ports. HDMI connections allow you to transfer high-definition digital video and audio from your laptop to an external display.
Several versions of HDMI have been released over the years, and despite the differences in capabilities, the physical ports themselves have remained the same across versions. The latest version, HDMI 2.1, released in 2017, offers a data rate of 48Gbps and supports 4K@120Hz or 8K@60Hz resolutions.
HDMI 2.1 is also backward compatible, meaning it can be used with HDMI ports on older devices without the new 2.1 features.

Also known as a K-lock or K-slot, a Kensington lock slot is a small, hardened hole commonly found on laptops that is used to attach a physical security lock to your device. It has been introduced into consumer laptops since 2000. Depending on the laptop model, this lock slot can be found either on the side or on the back of the laptop.
While many laptops have a built-in Kensington lock slot, they rarely come with a cable lock mechanism. With a compatible cable lock inserted into the lock slot, the other end of the cable can be secured in a secure location, thus securing the laptop and preventing theft. A lock slot is often indicated by a small padlock icon next to the hole.

SD Memory Card Reader
SD Memory Card Reader Slot is mainly used to read memory cards from digital cameras. SD cards are hot-pluggable and swappable, meaning you can insert and remove them without restarting the laptop. Data transfer rates vary greatly and depend on which SD cards the reader supports.
UHS-III SD cards can theoretically transfer data up to 624Mbps, but if your SD reader only supports an earlier version of UHS-I, you will only be able to transfer data at the maximum UHS-I speed of 104Mbps. With.

SD card readers are not available in all notebooks and as modern notebooks are getting thinner they are being phased out. However, you can still find new laptops designed for photo and video editing with SD card slots installed. MicroSD Card Reader
MicroSD cards and memory card readers were introduced by SanDisk in 2005 to enable smaller memory cards to be used in mobile phones. Similar to the larger SD card reader, the microSD card reader is designed to read the smaller memory cards now most commonly used for external storage in smartphones. microSD cards are also hot-pluggable and hot-swappable, just like larger SD cards.

Notebooks with limited internal memory, such as some Chromebooks, sometimes use microSD cards for additional storage. With each passing year, SD and microSD card storage has grown, and currently the largest consumer model available is 1TB.
microSD cards are electrically compatible with large SD cards and, with a simple adapter, can be used in notebooks that also accept SD cards. If your laptop does not have a microSD or SD card reader, you can use a USB adapter.
USB (Universal Serial Bus) is the most common expansion port on modern laptops and has been around since 1996. It is usually rectangular in shape and connects to a wide variety of peripherals such as keyboards, mice, printers, and external hard drives. USB ports come in many different types, and each has its own distinctive features and characteristics.
USB Type-A is the original 4-pin connector and varies by generation. With each successive generation, both power management and data transfer rates have improved. All newer generations are backwards compatible with older generations.
USB 2.0 typically features black or gray ports and provides data transfer rates up to 480 Mbps.
USB 3.0 laptop USB port (now known as USB 3.1 Gen 1) usually has blue or teal colored ports and can reach a theoretical maximum transfer rate of 5 Gbps, which is 10 times faster than USB 2.0.
USB 3.0 Notebook Port
The latest standard for USB Type-A ports is USB 3.1 Gen 2. It looks the same as USB 3.1 Gen 1, but offers a massive increase in transfer speeds up to 10Gbps.
Unlike Type-A, USB Type-B ports and connectors are square. They are not often found on laptops, but many printers, scanners, docking stations, and hubs use them as an input port. Despite the presence of adapters, most USB Type-B cables already come with a USB Type-B connector on one end and a USB Type-A connector on the other.
USB Type-C is the newly adopted standard connector for most modern laptops and devices and deserves a place on this list due to its unique functionality. Due to its small and narrow footprint, the USB Type-C port can be installed on most ultra-thin laptops on the market today. This, and the fact that USB Type-C can accept Thunderbolt connections on the same port, gives it an edge over other USB types.
USB Type-C ports can support many different standards. Unlike the rectangular Type-A with a 4-pin connector, USB Type-C is equipped with a 24-pin connector, which allows it to withstand higher currents and faster data transfer rates. The ability to withstand high currents allows devices to charge in less time when using the Type-C connector, delivering up to 100W of power.
In addition, Type-C devices can support USB 3.1 Gen 2 10 Gb/s transfer rates. If used as a Thunderbolt port (recognized by the lightning bolt icon next to the port), Type-C connections can even provide lightning speeds of up to 40Gbps. In addition, it can output DisplayPort video signals when equipped with the alt-mode function. This versatility helps well-equipped docking stations and USB-C hubs serve as the backbone for laptops with few ports.
USB Type-C laptop port
Adapters are available to connect USB Type-C to other types of USB. Although these connections are backwards compatible, they reduce the functionality and speed of data transfer between USB types.

Micro-USB cable is commonly used for older smartphones, low-powered tablets, some external hard drives, and various electronic devices. Most often they support USB 2.0 up to 480 Mbps, but sometimes they support USB 3.0, and the micro-USB connectors can be used interchangeably in both supported ports. If you want to connect a supported device to a laptop without a micro-USB port, you can purchase USB Type-A and Type-C to micro-USB adapters.
Thunderbolt is the fastest connection available on the market today. It combines PCIe, DisplayPort, serial signals, and DC power in a single port. This allows the Thunderbolt connection to be used for a variety of purposes, from connecting peripherals to charging a laptop. Thunderbolt ports can often be identified by a small lightning bolt icon next to the port.

The latest versions, Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4, can transfer data at lightning speeds of 40Gbps, four times faster than USB 3.1 gen 2. Even legacy versions like the original Thunderbolt have transfer speeds 10 Gb/s or Thunderbolt 2 – 20 Gb/s.
A single Thunderbolt 3 or 4 connection is also capable of outputting to two 4K monitors simultaneously using two DisplayPort signals. Some of the newer external graphics cards even come with Thunderbolt ports, allowing laptops to be connected to them for high-end gaming.
