What size jump starter do I need for my vehicle?
The peak amps for most jump starters range from about 500 to 2000, with some even going up to 4000 or 5000.
In normal conditions, most passenger vehicles with gas engines, including full-size SUVs and trucks, can be started with about 350 to 500 cranking amps.
What if I connect the clamps to the wrong battery terminals?
All of the jump starters we researched have multiple safeguards against electrical malfunctions and battery problems. Among those are reverse-polarity or reverse-connection alerts, which let you know if you’ve accidentally connected the clamps to the wrong battery terminals. If so, a light and/or sound will activate and the device won’t operate until the clamps are attached correctly. Some chargers have a manual override to deactivate this safety feature, such as when the battery’s voltage is too low.
Why won’t the jump starter start my engine?
There are various reasons why any jump starter won’t be able to get your car’s engine running. Start with the basic checks.
Is the jump starter adequately charged? Are the battery terminals clean, without a coating of dirt, grease or the white powdery residue from a corroded terminal? Are the device’s clamps tightly secured on the terminals?
What is manual override on a jump starter?
Jump starters can’t recognize a battery is connected if it’s too discharged. A jump starter’s electrical safeguards require that the battery has a minimal charge of about 0.2 volts. Otherwise, the jump starter won’t work in its normal way. That’s why many models include a manual override mode (also called a bypass, boost or force-start mode), which bypasses all of the electrical safeguards and makes the process similar to using jumper cables.
Do jump starters work in cold weather?
Jump starters can also have problems in very cold conditions, especially if both the jump starter and car battery are well below freezing.
While all of our recommended models have an operating temperature range that goes as low as -4 degrees F, it’s best to store the device at normal temperatures whenever possible. If you often drive in very cold conditions, buy a jump starter with high cold-cranking amps (CCA).
How do the smaller lithium-ion battery models compare with larger lead-acid jumpers?
The main difference between the two types of jump starters is their size and weight, which translates into portability and convenience. Most lithium models weigh less than three pounds, with many weighing under two. They measure about six to nine inches” long and about three to four inches wide. Lead-acid jump starters can weigh about 16 pounds or more and are much bulkier. The popular Stanley J509 Portable Power Station, for example, measures about 13 inches high, 11 inches wide and seven inches deep. Lead-acid models are handy for garage use but aren’t practical to carry around in your car.
One advantage of lead-acid jumpers is that they often include additional features, such as a tire inflator, a DC plug or outlet, or even a radio with speakers.
