HDTV Settings Menu

This article provides information about the Settings available on LG HDTVs. The Settings Menus include the Picture Settings Menu, Sound/Audio Settings Menu, Channels Settings Menu, Time Settings Menu, Option Settings Menu, Lock Settings Menu, Input Settings Menu, and the USB Menu.

These menus DO NOT apply to Smart TVs.

Menus and Menu Options:

Your LG HDTV has several settings that can be used to customize your viewing experience.
Below is a list of the available menus, click any one to learn more.

  • Picture Menu

    Reduces power consumption by setting the TV brightness level at an optimum level to save energy. You can select the best Energy Saving setting for your viewing environment.

    • Off – Turns off Energy Saving mode.
    • Minimum/Medium/Maximum – Applies the preset Energy Saving mode.
    • Screen Off – Screen is turned off, but sound remains active. Pressing any button on the remote control reactivates the screen.

    Whether you watch movies or play games, you may optimize your viewing environment using the Picture Mode settings.

    • Vivid – Heightens contrast, brightness and sharpness to display vivid images.
    • Standard – Displays images in standard levels of contrast, brightness and sharpness.
    • Sport – Displays the optimum picture for sports programs.
    • Cinema – Displays the optimum picture for movies.
    • Game – Displays the optimum picture for games.

    Note: Depending on the input signal, the available range of picture modes may differ.

    Here you can adjust each aspect of your display individually. This type of fine-tuning is best for advanced users.

    • Backlight – Adjusts the display brightness by varying the brightness of the LCD panel.
    • Contrast – Adjusts the difference between bright and dark regions of the screen.
    • Brightness – Adjusts the overall screen brightness.
    • Sharpness – Adjusts the sharpness of the borders between bright and dark.
    • Color – Adjusts the colors on the screen darker or lighter.
    • Tint – Adjusts the red/green color balance.
    • Color Tone – Adjusts the overall tone of colors to warm or cold.
      Note: Depending on model, the Color Tone option may not be available.
    • Reset – Resets all custom picture settings to the defaults.

      Fine tuning adjustments to screen color and contrast are made from the Advanced Control menu. You can calibrate the screen for each picture mode or adjust picture settings for a special screen.

      • Dynamic Contrast – Adjusts the contrast to the optimal level according to the brightness of the image.
      • Dynamic Color – Adjusts color and saturation for a more vivid image.
      • Skin Color – Skin color spectrum can be separately set to implement the skin color as defined by the user..
      • Grass Color – Natural color spectrum (meadows, hills, etc.) can be separately set.
      • Sky Color – Sky color is set separately.
      • Gamma – Sets the gradation curve according to the output of the picture signal in relation to the input signal.

      Note: Depending on model, the Skin/Grass/Sky Color options may not be available.

    • Picture Option – click to learn more

      Additional picture options can be adjusted to customize your viewing experience.

      • Noise Reduction – Remove irregular and erratic pixels for a clearer image.
      • MPEG Noise Reduction – Reduce noise from digital video signals.
      • Black Level – Repair brightness and contrast by adjusting black levels.
      • Real Cinema – Optimize display for movies.

    Note: Depending on the input signal or other picture settings, the range of detailed items for adjustment may differ.

    The Aspect Ratio is the ratio of screen width to screen height. The common aspect ratio is 16:9 for most HD content. Aspect Ratio can be set automatically by the programming, or manually adjusted to provide the best viewing experience based on the type of content you wish to watch.

    • 16:9 – Resizes the image to fit a 16:9 screen.
    • Just Scan – Displays high-quality image without loss.
    • Set By Program – Depending on the input signal, screen aspect ratio changes to 4:3 or 16:9.
    • 4:3 – Resizes the image ratio to fit 4:3 screen.
    • Zoom – Resizes the image to fit the screen width. The top and bottom parts of the image may be cut off.

    Note: Any options that resize the image will cause some distortion or partial image loss.

  • Sound/Audio Menu

    Set to On to automatically equalize volume across TV channels.

    Adjust this setting to shift the sound to the left or right speaker, or leave it in the middle for a balance between the two.

    Provides audio customization for specific programming.

    • Standard – Suitable for all types of video.
    • Music – Optimized for listening to music.
    • Cinema – Optimized for listening in a low sound environment with programming meant for a theater experience.
    • Sport – Optimized for listening to sporting events.
    • Game – Optimized for playing video games.

    Individual adjustments to fine-tune sound quality, typically for advanced users.

    • Treble – Adjust the level of high notes (higher frequency sounds).
    • Bass – Adjust the level of low notes (lower frequency sounds).
    • Reset – Resets all custom sound settings to their defaults.

    Turn on or off the built-in TV speakers. Set to OFF if using external speakers, such as a home theater, sound bar, or sound plate.

  • Channels Menu

    Automatically find and program all available over-the-air channels. If your TV includes an ATSC tuner, the over-the-air HD channels will also be found.

    Using this feature requires performing Auto Tuning first. Once Auto Tuned, you can manually add/remove any channel.

  • Time Menu

    Sets the TV date and time.

    • Auto – Synchronizes the TV clock to the digital time information sent by the TV station.
      Note: Set the Time zone and daylight savings if this option is selected.
    • Manual – Sets the time and date manually, if the auto setup does not correspond to the current time.
      Note: Set the time manually during daylight savings.

    Automatically set the TV to turn off at a specified time.

    • Repeat – Sets whether the Off Time will happen regularly.
      • Off – Off Time will not be set.
      • Once – Off Time will occur one time.
      • Daily – Off Time will occur daily.
      • Mon~Fri – Off Time will occur Monday through Friday.
      • Mon~Sat – Off Time will occur Monday through Saturday.
      • Weekend – Off Time will occur Saturday and Sunday.
      • Sunday – Off Time will occur on Sundays only.
    • Hour – Sets the hour the TV will turn off.
    • Minute – Sets the minute the TV will turn off.

    Automatically turn the TV on at the specified time.

    Note: TV will automatically turn off after 120 minutes if no buttons are pressed within that time.

    • Repeat – Sets whether the On Time will happen regularly.
      • Off – On Time will not be set.
      • Once – On Time will occur one time.
      • Daily – On Time will occur daily.
      • Mon~Fri – On Time will occur Monday through Friday.
      • Mon~Sat – On Time will occur Monday through Saturday.
      • Weekend – On Time will occur Saturday and Sunday.
      • Sunday – On Time will occur on Sundays only.
    • Hour – Sets the hour the TV will turn on.
    • Minute – Sets the minute the TV will turn on.

    Set the TV to automatically turn off after the specified minutes have lapsed.

    Available Intervals: 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240 min.

  • Option Menu

    Adjust the language settings on your TV.

    • Menu – Selects a screen menu language (English, French, or Spanish).
    • Audio – [In Digital Mode Only] Selects the desired language when watching digital broadcasting containing several audio languages.

    Assign names to your inputs from a pre-defined list.

    Available Names: VCR, DVD, Set Top Box, Satellite, Cable Box, Game, PC, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray

    Note: Available names may differ by TV model.

    View subtitles when the TV station provides subtitled programming. Program subtitles work only on digital/analog broadcasts or external input.

    • Field 1 data channels – two Captions (CC1, CC2), two Text (T1, T2).
    • Field 2 data channels – two Captions (CC3, CC4), two Text (T3, T4).

    Deletes all optional settings and returns to initial default mode (factory reset).

    • Once initialization is complete, the TV will turn off and on by itself.
    • If Lock System is activated, a pop-up password prompt will appear.
    • Do not turn off power during initialization.

    Note: DO NOT USE IF THE SYSTEM PASSWORD IS UNKNOWN. Password WILL NOT be reset.

    Selects Home Use or Store Demo. Store Demo mode is used for Store displays and streams TV features periodically.

    Displays information about the LG patents website.

  • Lock Menu

    Provides the option to require a password (four digit PIN code) for certain TV functions. The other Lock Menu options can be selected to password protect.

    Access to the TV can be password protected. Set the password with a four digit PIN code.

    Note: The default password is 0-0-0-0.

    Select specific channels to block content from viewing. Content can only be viewed with the TV password. Channel blocking is useful for protecting children from adult content.

    Use the OK button on your remote to select/deselect password protection from the list of currently programmed channels.

    Select specific movie ratings to be password protected. Because some movie ratings may not be suitable for all members of the family, blocking this content is an option. The standard Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) rating system guidelines:

    • G – (General Audiences) All ages admitted
    • PG – (Parental guidance suggested) Some matrial may not be suitable for children
    • PG-13 – (Parents strongly cautioned) Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13
    • R – (Restricted) Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian
    • NC-17 – No one 17 and under admitted
    • X – Adults only

    Select specific content with TV ratings suitable for children. Content will be blocked that does not meet the criteria.

    • Age – TV-Y (All children, including children ages 2-6), TV-Y7 (Directed to older children, suitable for children age 6 and above)
    • Fantasy Violence – TV-Y7 (Directed to older children – Fantasy Violence, suitable for children age 6 and above, containing more intense or combative fantasy violence)

    Block TV programming based on the Parental Control Function (V-Chip) rating system.

    • Age –
      • TV-G (General audience, suitable for all ages)
      • TV-PG (Parental guidance suggested, containing material that are unsuitable for younger children)
      • TV-14 (Parents strongly cautioned, containing material that is unsuitable for children age 14 and under)
      • TV-MA (Mature audiences only, unsuitable for children age under 17)
    • Dialogue – (suggestive dialogue) TV-PG or TV-14
    • Language – (coarse language) TV-PG, TV-14, or TV-MA
    • Sex – (sexual situation) TV-PG, TV-14, or TV-MA
    • Violence – TV-PG, TV-4, or TV-MA

    This option is only available if the TV receives Region5 Rating data, which is not available in the US.

    Block TV input from a specified source. Access to these inputs will require a password.

    Note: Only devices hooked into the locked port will require a password. If the device is moved to a different input, the lock will not be applied to the new input unless it is set through this menu.

  • Input Menu

    Tune to specific inputs using the button on your remote labelled Input or AV/Input.

    Note: Inputs with no connected devices will appear gray.

  • USB Menu

    Use only those USB storage devices formatted with FAT32 or NTFS File System provided by Windows.

    It is recommended to use USB flash drive with 32 GB or less and USB HDD with 2 TB or less.

    Before playing photos, please access Music List, select and mark the music you want to set as background music. If not, the TV will automatically play music in the photo folder from which the photos are playing as background music.

    1. Open the USB menu item corresponding to the USB input slot your device is plugged in to.
      i.e. Device in USB 1 slot, choose USB1Music List.

      Note: Choosing the USBPhoto List or USBMusic List will perform the same action, so click either one to proceed.

    2. Choose Music on the next screen.
    3. Navigate the next area like folders on your computer, using the arrow keys and the OK key on your remote. Find and select the songs you want to play during the slideshow.
    4. Use the arrow keys to move the highlighted area to the top section, and move to the Photo tab.
    5. Select the photos you would like to view, then press the Play button on your remote.

    2. Choose Music on the next screen.
    3. Navigate the next area like folders on your computer, using the arrow keys and the OK key on your remote.
    4. Select the songs you would like to listen to, then press the Play button on your remote.

      Digital KTV settings

      If your TV has a digital tuner that supports DVB-C (modern plasma, LCD, LED, OLED TVs), perform auto tuning by specifying the digital signal source.
      If auto-tuning did not work (depending on the TV model) – you need to set the following parameters in automatic search mode – frequency: 298 , flow rate: 6875 , modulation: 128 .
      In some cases (depending on the TV model), you may need to enter all the search parameters shown in the table below:

      If your TV does not support DVB-C, then you need to purchase a tuner (set-top box) that supports DVB-C.

      year of manufacture (letter index B, C or D). Before setting, you need to set the following parameters in the menu: Country – Slovakia or Slovenia, Auto search for digital and analog channels, Source – Cable, Full.

      General digital channel tuning algorithms for various TV models:

      SAMSUNG

      1. Press to enter the menu – ( green button )
      2. Select in the menu – “Channel” (pictogram “Satellite dish” )
      3. Select – “Auto-tuning”
      4. Select signal source – “Cable”
      5. Select – “Digital + analog”
      6. Search mode – “Full”
      7. Press – “Start”
      8. Setup takes approximately 5-10 minutes.

      SAMSUNG TV settings can also be downloaded from a USB stick. You can download the settings file from the following link: http://media.udomlya.ru/playlist/channel_list_1101.scm . The following is an example procedure, for a more detailed procedure, see the Instructions for Use:

      1. Copy the file to the USB flash drive
      2. Connect USB flash drive to TV
      3. Enter the TV menu “MENU”
      4. Select item “Channel” – “Transmit channel list”
      5. Enter TV PIN code (default 0000 )
      6. Select option “Import from USB” – “Yes”
      7. The TV will reboot, done.

      PHILIPS

      First, we read the stickers on the back of the TV, where separately for each tuner (DVB-T and DVB-C) there is a list of countries in which, according to Philips, there is a digital broadcast (at the time of release TV, but if you update the firmware through their official website, then this list may change in subsequent firmware). If our country is not there, then we will have to put some other from this list. For Philips TVs, the step between frequencies should be 8. Search mode – “Full”

      1. Click on the icon – “House”
      2. Select – “Configuration”
      3. Select – “Installation”
      4. Select – “Reinstall channels”
      5. Choose – “the country that is indicated on the sticker on the back” (usually France, Finland or Germany)
      6. Select – “Digital mode”
      7. Select – “Cable”
      8. Select – “Automatically”
      9. Press – “Start”

      Set-up takes approximately 5-10 minutes.

      Philips TV models of 2011

      1. Click on the icon – “House”
      2. Select – “Installation”
      3. Select “Search for channels”
      4. Select – “Reinstall channels”
      5. Choose – “the country that is indicated on the sticker on the rear panel” (usually France, Finland or Germany)
      6. Select digital mode – “Cable (DVB-C)”
      7. In line “Network frequency” we drive in the frequency
      8. In line “Baud rate” we drive in “6875”
      9. Next, select the line “Scanning frequencies”

      Set-up takes approximately 5-10 minutes.

      LG

      1. Push button – “Menu”
      2. Select in the menu – “Options”
      3. Select – “Auto-tuning”
      4. Choose a country – “France, Switzerland, Sweden or Finland”
      5. Select signal source – “Cable”
      6. Choose – “Digital”
      7. Press – “Search”

      Set-up takes approximately 5-10 minutes.

      SHARP

      If your TV model provides for the reception of digital channels, but item “DTV MENU ” is missing, then we first select another country – France, Switzerland, Sweden or Finland.

      1. Push button – “DTV”
      2. Press – “DTV MENU”
      3. Choose – “Installation”
      4. Select – “Auto installation”
      5. Press – “OK”

      Set-up takes approximately 5-10 minutes.

      SONY models 2010 onwards

      Since not all SONY models are equipped with a digital cable TV tuner (DVB-C), you need to check the model of your SONY TV. Models equipped with a DVB-C tuner are marked KDL-**EX*** or KDL-**NX*** – for example KDL-32EX402R2 the first 3 letters in the model name (KDL) just indicate that the TV is “digital” . For models KLV-**BX*** etc. no DVB tuners.

      1. Press the button “MENU ” (for some models it is called “HOME” on the remote control (hereinafter referred to as the remote control). This button is usually blue.
      2. Select item “Settings” .
      3. Find menu “Digital configuration” in the list of settings, enter it
      4. Select item “Auto search for digital stations”
      5. The source selection window will open – select the type of TV connection. Select “cable”
      6. In the item for selecting the type of scan – select mode “full scan”
        1. Or select item “Manual”
        2. Next, enter the frequency
        3. We leave the access code “Auto” .
