Silverstone compact cases are very popular in our country, many of them designed to install SFX power supplies. The company’s product range also includes such power supplies, however, for a number of reasons, the acoustic ergonomics of such solutions leaves much to be desired. At the end of last year, Silverstone announced a new SFX power supply with a case length increased from 100 to 130 mm, calling this deviation from the standard dimensions the new format – SFX-L. And the power supplies of the new format have already come close to the dimensions of a standard ATX format PSU, the length of which is 140 mm, winning a little in height (64 versus 86 mm) and width (125 versus 150 mm). The difference is not too big, especially considering that such PSUs are mainly installed, albeit in compact, but far from miniature cases, where you can easily find a place for an ATX format power supply without any problems.

In this article, we’ll take a look at Silverstone’s new format solution, the SST-SX500-LG Extended PSU. The power supply comes in a retail package, which is a small cardboard box with matte printing. The design is dominated by brown shades, there are also black and yellow elements. The packaging looks very harmonious.

Note that in addition to the standard set, there is also an adapter in the package that allows you to install a power supply with an SFX mount in a case designed for ATX power supplies. This expands the scope of this model.

The power supply has a matte black finish that has a very fine texture, making it highly resistant to fingerprints and scratches. A low-profile 120 mm fan is installed under the wire grille.

Characteristics

All the necessary parameters are indicated on the power supply case in full, for the bus power + 12VDC the value of 480 W is declared. +12VDC bus power to full power ratio is 0.96, which is quite a worthy indicator for modern solutions of similar power.

Without exception, all wires are modular, meaning they can be removed leaving only those needed for a particular system. For compact cases, this feature is especially relevant, however, the distribution of connectors over the cords is such that in a real system it will be possible to refuse at best one or two.

Power supply leads are relatively short. However, since it is primarily intended for compact cases, this length will be sufficient in most cases. Although it would be possible to complete the power supply with wires of different lengths for the main power connectors.

The number of connectors and their relative positions should also be evaluated with an eye to use in compact cases – for typical systems with one or two drives, the connectors are quite enough, but the manufacturer could take some creative approach to completing the case with various adapters in order to minimize the power cords connected in the future system block. For example, an adapter from SATA Power to a peripheral connector would not hurt, since the need for a connector of the latter type is usually vanishingly small in the case of compact cases, otherwise one power cord for all devices could be dispensed with. I would also like to see an adapter for a power connector for low-profile optical drives.

Cooling system

The main semiconductor elements are mounted on two compact radiators with a base thickness of about 3 mm. Independent sources of +3.3VDC and 5VDC are installed on the daughter PCB and, traditionally, do not have additional heat sinks – this is quite typical for power supplies with active cooling.

The capacitors in the power supply are made by Japanese companies: Rubycon (high voltage) and Nippon Chemi-Con. The set of manufacturers is very representative, which is good news. Also, a certain number of polymer capacitors are installed in the PSU.

The power supply is equipped with a low profile (15 mm) S1201512MW (1800 rpm) 120 mm fan, made on the basis of a sleeve bearing. The fan is made by the Taiwanese company Globefan Technology.

Testing the power supply

The first stage of testing is operation of the power supply at maximum power for a long time. Such a test with confidence allows you to verify the performance of the PSU.

In this case, no problems arose, the voltage values ​​deviate slightly from the nominal value.

The next stage of instrumental testing is building a cross-load characteristic (CNC) of and presenting it on a quarter plane, limited by the maximum power on the 3. 3 & 5 V bus on the one hand (on the ordinate axis) and the maximum power on the 12 V bus on the other hand – on abscissa axis. At each point, the measured voltage value is indicated by a color marker depending on the deviation from the nominal value. 9

The electrical characteristics of the PSU are at a good level: in the entire studied power range, deviations do not exceed three percent of the nominal value. With a typical power distribution over the channels, the +3.3VDC, +5VDC and +12VDC channel deviations do not exceed two percent in the direction of increasing voltage, so problems with modern video cards are not expected. The power supply allows you to load the channel + 12VDC at 480 W without noticeable deviations from the nominal value, so the load capacity of this channel can be considered high.

During the next stage of testing, we measure the parameters of the AC power supply to which the tested power supply is connected, while the latter is operating at constant power. Based on the data obtained, the parameters that determine the efficiency and effectiveness of the power source are calculated.

The efficiency of the model is also at a decent level. At maximum power, the power supply dissipates a little less than 73 watts, and this model dissipates 60 watts at a power of about 450 watts.

PSU Efficiency is at a good level. According to our measurements, the efficiency of this PSU reaches over 88% in the power range from 100 to 400 watts, the maximum recorded value was about 88.8% at a power of 100 watts. At the same time, the efficiency at a power of 50 W was about 81%.

We also measure the starting current in idle mode with fully discharged capacitors.

Starting current is relatively high, which reduces the chances of normal operation with cheap low-power UPSs.

At the request of readers, now we measure the maximum power that the power supply is capable of delivering through one PCI-E video card power connector. During this stage of testing, the power supply is loaded via the +12VDC channel only through one PCI-E slot, while the load on the +3.3VDC and +5VDC channels is set at about 1 A per channel.

During testing, the power supply was connected by two connectors located on the same power cord. The result obtained demonstrates the ability of the PSU to deliver the full power of the +12VDC bus through the power connectors of the video card.

Noise measurement

In preparing this material, we used a technique for measuring the noise level of power supplies, which is still experimental. The power supply unit is located on a flat surface with the fan up, above it at a distance of 0.35 meters is placed the measuring microphone of the Octava 110A-Eco sound level meter, which measures the noise level. The power supply is loaded using a special stand that has a silent mode of operation. During the noise level measurement, the power supply is operated at constant power for 20 minutes, after which the noise level is measured.

This distance to the measurement object is the closest to the desktop placement of the system unit with the power supply installed. This method allows you to evaluate the noise level of the power supply in harsh environments in terms of a small distance from the noise source to the user. In the final test phase, we decided to test the power supply at an elevated ambient temperature of 40 degrees Celsius. During this stage of testing, a room with a volume of about 8 cubic meters is heated, after which the temperature of the capacitors and the noise level of the power supply are measured at two ratings: at the maximum power of the PSU and at a power of 125 W.

PSU has demonstrated stable operation at maximum power and at an ambient temperature of up to 40 degrees. The noise level in such conditions at maximum power increased to 45 dBA as expected (i.e., by 3 dBA from the initial value), but at a power of 125 W, the noise level increased by 9 dBA from the original value and amounted to 30 dBA.

As for the temperature of the capacitors, it was 55 degrees (an increase of 7 degrees) when operating at maximum power and 43 degrees (an increase of the same 7 degrees) when operating at 125 watts. Thus, even under such harsh conditions, the thermal loading of capacitors is not a concern.

Consumer rating

If we consider the possibility of using this power supply in compact cases of cube and desktop sizes, then we can state that this is one of the best options with the SFX mount, although it will probably not be possible to install it in all cases due to for a markedly increased length. In this case, consumer qualities can be assessed, if not excellent, then certainly very good. The main merit in this is the almost excellent acoustic ergonomics, we also note the worthy electrical characteristics of the PSU. Among the shortcomings are short wires and a small number of connectors for connecting components, which, however, will be enough for the vast majority of owners of compact cases. However, when installing this PSU model in cases of standard sizes, especially with the lower location of the power supply, the insufficient length of the wires will greatly complicate the matter or even make such an application impossible.
