Money in Excel is now available to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers in the U.S.

Manage your money—without ever leaving Excel

Money in Excel is a dynamic, smart template and add-in for Excel that allows you to securely connect your bank, credit card, investment, and loan accounts to Excel and automatically import your transaction and account information into an Excel spreadsheet.

If you’re a current Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscriber, simply go to this link to download the template. Once downloaded, open the Excel template1 and follow the on-screen prompts to connect your financial accounts using a secure third-party plugin supported by Plaid2 (Plaid currently supports most major U.S. financial institutions). Once your account information is verified, the workbook will be updated with your latest transaction history3 and is now ready for use.

Keep track of your money

Once your financial accounts3 are connected, Money in Excel will automatically import your transaction information from all your accounts into one workbook. You no longer need to spend hours manually setting up a personal finance spreadsheet from scratch; Money in Excel does it for you in just a few seconds. And every time you want to update the workbook with the latest transactions, just click the Update button and get the latest snapshot of your transactions and accounts without ever leaving Excel.

Use the “Snapshot” sheet to get an instant glimpse of how you’re spending across various categories such as groceries, household items, rent, and more. And to help ensure you are not caught unaware of any unwelcome transactions, Money in Excel will alert you to increases in your subscription fees, changes in bank and overdraft charges, or any big purchases that were posted during the month.

We know people often choose Excel to manage their finances because it allows them to take a more personalized approach. With this in mind, we designed Money in Excel to be easily customizable to suit your needs and goals. For example, if a certain transaction does not fall within an existing spending category, you can simply add your own. If you want to perform a quick custom analysis, you can copy the relevant transactions into a new Excel sheet and use any of your favorite Excel features to do quick calculations. And while Money in Excel already comes with charts that have been created based on your transaction information—such as one for your recurring expenses—you can always create your own charts and tables and add them to the workbook.

Is Microsoft Money still available?

Yes, it still is available for the time being. Remember that this service was launched in 2020, and Microsoft offered a premium Money in Excel template to Microsoft 365 Family and Personal subscribers.  

However, back in May 2022, the Redmond-based tech giant announced that this would be withdrawn on June 30, 2023.

Microsoft is focusing distribution efforts for Microsoft Money Plus software online via download and discontinuing traditional box sales of the software at retail.

On June 10th, 2009 Microsoft announced that it would discontinue sales of the software on June 30, 2009.

Can I still download Microsoft Money?

What was the last version of Microsoft Money?

Well, the last version of this software, released in August 2007, was called Microsoft Money Plus. Also know that it came in four editions: Essentials, Deluxe, Premium, and Home & Business.

Will MS Money run on Windows 10?

This is a free tool and we already covered how to download and use Microsoft Money Plus Sunset version on Windows 10.

This tool is designed as a replacement for Money Plus Deluxe and Money Plus Home & Basic, therefore if you have any of the previous versions of the software installed, we suggest that you don’t install Money Plus Sunset over it.

Microsoft Money has a long history, but unfortunately, this tool isn’t actively developed anymore.

The first version of this program was released way back in 1991, and it was available for the desktop version of Windows. After several versions, Microsoft Money made its way from 2000 to 2006 on select versions of Windows Mobile.

In 2008 Microsoft announced that it will stop releasing new versions of the software each year and that there are no plans to release the version for 2009. The sales were discontinued on June 30, 2009. 

In January 2011 the online services were stopped and users could no longer enjoy any support from Microsoft.

Since all online support isn’t available anymore, you can’t use any of the previously available online features such as bill payment, online quotes, statement downloads, data sync with MSN Money, etc.

Keep in mind that there’s no online help and no Assisted Support, therefore if you have any issues you won’t get any support from Microsoft.

  2. Click the Download button and wait for the download to start.
  3. Locate the downloaded file that you just downloaded and double-click it.
  4. You might get a message saying that your antivirus software can interfere with Microsoft Money setup. Click OK.
  5. Read the license terms and click the I Accept button.
  6. Wait for the installation to finish.
  7. Once the installation is completed, click the Finish button.

The software is officially discontinued, but you can still use Microsoft Money on Windows 10, with certain features missing.

After you installed Microsoft Money, do not hesitate to double-click the Microsoft Money shortcut.

Microsoft Money for Mac

Many are wondering, so why not get straight to it: Is Microsoft Money available for Mac? Unfortunately, it is not and it never was any version of Microsoft Money available for other platforms than Windows.

Nevertheless, that does not mean you cannot use this app to track your investment in MacOS. Here are some useful workarounds:

  • You can dual boot Windows 10 or 11 and Mac OS and boot into Windows whenever you want to use Microsoft Money
  • Use a Windows emulator for Mac (Parallels Desktop for Mac or VMware Fusion are great alternatives)

Finally, we have to mention that there are plenty of Microsoft Money alternatives that you can use on Mac such as Moneydance, Quicken, or Moneyspire.

Can I convert Microsoft Money to Quicken?

To answer that, you should know that Quicken is currently able to import files from Microsoft Money 2007 and 2008, and Money Plus Deluxe only.

Adding money to your Microsoft account

To add money to your Microsoft account, you must activate a Microsoft gift certificate on the Activate page.

The entire amount is credited to your Microsoft account and can be used to purchase movies, games, in-app purchases, and general items. It can be used to purchase an Xbox subscription, but not a Microsoft 365 subscription. See this post for step-by-step instructions.

If you don’t have a Microsoft Gift Card, you can buy one online.

  1. Make sure your Microsoft account has up-to-date payment methods. For more information, see Change the payment method or credit card associated with your Microsoft account or Payment options and orders.

  2. Go to the Microsoft Store gift certificate page and select the Xbox or Microsoft gift certificate.

    Note: Payment for the purchase of popular games, applications, movies and accessories and devices is not cashed.

  3. Select the amount of funds you wish to purchase from the drop-down menu and add this amount to your cart.

  4. Go through the checkout process (you’ll need to sign in to your Microsoft account with a password).

  5. Make sure your name and email address are shown as the recipient and complete the purchase (if you bought a gift certificate for another user, this will not add money to your account).

  6. Check that you have received the e-mail with the payment card code. Go to the Activate page. If you have multiple Microsoft accounts, make sure you’re signed in to the correct account.

  7. Enter the code and press the button Next . The entire amount associated with the code will be credited to your Microsoft account.
