Been looking for a new monitor and this one seemed almost perfect except that it didn’t have G-sync nor have the certified compatibility. Went out and bought it yesterday to test for myself. General specs: MAG27CQ, 144 Hz, Freesync (48-144Hz range), 1440p, 27inch, VA panel.
After testing for 4+ hours, I’m hoping someone can help me with some tips but I think the monitor just might not be very compatible with G-sync, no big deal it was worth a shot and for those that don’t care about G-sync or have an AMD card – the monitor is beautiful! Great colors, insane contrast, and decent response times. A nice curvature that isn’t distracting and perfect for the screen size IMO. If anyone owns this monitor, please comment to let me know if you have a fix or similar issues.
After testing 4 games (R6 Siege, RLeague, Hitman 2, and Witcher 3) I managed to experience a full spectrum of G-sync functionality.
R6 worked beautifully. 0 issues. Increased graphics to average 50 frames – perfect. Decreased graphics to average 110 frames – perfect.
RLeague I hit 144Hz so not sure if G-sync even matters, but the G-sync ON display was not visible and I couldn’t get it to appear. Makes me think it wasn’t even active, no big deal for Rleague though since FPS is so high.
But Hitman 2 and Witcher 3, where I increase quality over framerate (averaging about 50-75 for both games depending on the area), I have stuttering and flickering. Hitman 2 was probably the worst offender. Throughout the menu and loading screen I experienced flickering. The flickering actually lessened in game, but was still very noticeable.
I played all these games without G-sync compatibility to confirm the issues, and again, it looks beautiful and feels great as the monitor itself is awesome. But I want my new monitor to be future proof so a semi-functioning VRR is not ideal – I’ll likely be returning it but might milk the 30 day return period for a bit of more testing.
I’ve tried messing with CRU and lowering the VRR range, normally at 48-144Hz, dropped it to 35-144Hz but didn’t have any effect. Someone suggested that for the VA 48-144Hz freesync panels to try 30-144Hz. I’ll try that later tonight and edit, but I’m thinking the monitor will only ever partially work – some games will work like R6 Siege (beautifully), some will work like Hitman 2 (terribly), and some will work like Witcher 3 (minor but noticeable). I see exactly why Nvidia said that some will work, some won’t work, and some will partially work.
For those that already own the monitor, I think it’s awesome. You have the option to play around and for some games it’ll work flawlessly and just turn it off for the ones that don’t. For those looking to buy it, see above and hope my experience and testing helped you!
Gonna keep looking for a new monitor, definitely want a 27in, 144Hz, 1440p. And a mostly or completely functioning VRR ability with my 1070. VA panel is something I’m very interested in now thanks to the MAG27.
EDIT: Played around with it more. Extending CRU range down to 30Hz, messing with Overdrive (aka Response Time), and nothing really helped. What I did notice was that when I can maintain high FPS 80+ the flickering decreases significantly. For Hitman 2, at around 50-60 the flickering was very apparent. I decreased my graphical settings to reach around 85-100 FPS and I don’t think I noticed it at all. More of the same with BFV when I tested last night, felt okay but strong flickering throughout the menu/loading screens. Lessened in-game but still noticeable when my frames dipped. Really wonder why games like R6 Siege work perfectly and others don’t…
