How Many Monitors Can You Add?

Most computers can run dual monitors. But if you want to add a third screen or use two 4K monitors, check that your device is capable first.

Windows: The presence of several ports on your graphics card indicates it can likely handle multiple monitors. But you should check the maximum number of supported displays and resolutions. (You can see what graphics card you have by typing Device Manager into the Search bar, opening it, and then expanding Display adapters.) Visit the manufacturer’s website to find the specifications for your graphics card, and look for a section titled Display Support or something similar that will list this info.

Mac: If you’re adding monitors to a Mac, click on the Apple icon > About This Mac and double-click your serial number, then tap Command-C on your keyboard to copy it, go to Apple’s website, and paste it into search. Click on Support to find the Technical Specifications and search for Video Support.

What Size Screen Should You Get?

You can mix and match the types of screens you have at your workstation, though you’ll likely want some consistency. The most common monitor size is 24 inches, but 27-inch screens are increasingly popular. Having the same size screens will be nice for symmetry. Just keep an eye on resolution when you buy. A 1080p screen on a 27-inch monitor might look too fuzzy. 

We dive into orientation and arrangements below, but consider different types of screen arrangements. My current preference is a 34-inch ultrawide screen paired with a 27-inch screen in portrait orientation. As the name suggests, ultrawides are really wide and can deliver the experience of two screens, minus the screen’s bezel in between. Pairing it with a screen in portrait mode means you get enough space on the ultrawide to run two full-size browser windows side by side, plus a vertical screen on the side for apps that benefit from it, like Slack and email. 

Stands and VESA Mounts

Monitors come with a wide assortment stand designs. If you are going with the stand that comes in the box, check the measurements on the product page to ensure it’ll fit nicely on your desk.  

Alternatively, you can mount your screen to your desk and get rid of the stand, freeing up a lot of space. (You can also freely move your screen to various angles and positions.) Many displays support the VESA mount system. There are different sizes, and monitor arms have a screen size range and maximum weight they can support. Always check whether the monitor’s product page mentions VESA support, and note the VESA mount size. When you buy an arm mount, make sure it supports the screen size and weight of your new screen. 

Ports and Cables

To get the most from your computer and monitors, you’ll need to think about which ports and cables to use. For Windows PCs, your choice is often HDMI vs. DisplayPort. Unfortunately, this isn’t as straightforward as you might expect. There are several versions of each connection type, each with different capabilities. For example, HDMI 2.1 supports up to 8K resolution at 120 Hz, DisplayPort 1.4 can deliver 8K at 60 Hz, and HDMI 2.0 is limited to 4K at 60 Hz.

For laptops, you might be looking at Thunderbolt, Mini DisplayPort, or even USB-C. Sometimes you will need an adapter or USB hub to connect an external monitor.

Check the technical specifications for your graphics card and monitor to find the best option for you. Remember that the card, monitor, and cable (and any adapters) you use must support the same technology and the same version. High-end monitors usually come with a selection of cables in the box, but some manufacturers annoyingly provide a single option that might not match the monitor’s top capability.

The question of connecting several or more monitors to one computer worries quite a few users. Someone needs it for work, someone for games, and someone just has a second monitor and thinks how it could be used to good use.

In any case, everyone is interested in how to properly connect monitors to a PC, what kind of video card and connectors are needed for this, is it possible to connect one monitor to a video card and the other to the motherboard, how to connect 4-8 monitors at the same time or create a thin-seam video wall with not much budget.

How to use multiple monitors

Users at home can use multiple monitors for the following purposes:

  • work in several applications
  • software development
  • workspace extension
  • expansion of the playing space
  • watching videos on a big screen
  • using a PC for monitoring in trading
  • PC use by multiple users

An example of simultaneous work in several applications can be an open text document with data on one screen and transferring information from it to another format (table or database).

It’s also pretty handy to use multiple displays for software development and web projects, one for working on source code, the other for seeing changes immediately.

If you work with large drawings or 3D models, you can expand your workspace with multiple monitors. Or you can just work on one screen, and follow the changes on the sites or any other information on the other.

Using multiple monitors to expand the field of view in games is not all clear. Firstly, this is a serious additional load on the video card due to the higher resolution, so it must be powerful enough. Secondly, you will see a seam between the displays, which will not be pleasant.

But, in principle, if you connect several frameless displays, the last drawback can be smoothed out. The expansion of the playing space will be especially useful in flight and racing simulators.

But the second monitor in games can be used in other ways. For example, play an MMO RPG in several windows, or play on one and follow the merchants on the second, chat on the forum, or keep a tab open with useful information about leveling.

For movies, bezels between the screens will be the main problem, but with bezel-less displays, you can create a real home theater with a huge screen. Although this is unlikely to be economically justified, only if you already have one frameless display and buy a second one. Otherwise, it will be easier and probably cheaper to buy a large TV. The exception is if you will use multiple screens not only for watching videos, but also for work and possibly games.

But in trading, perhaps there is no choice, creating a 4-8 display configuration is the only way to simultaneously follow the main trends.

It’s all about how to connect monitors – buy a lot of cheap graphics cards or a few more expensive ones with more connectors or prefer a specialized solution for multi-display configurations. We will talk about this a little later.

Some users who, due to budget or space constraints, have one PC for two, are considering connecting a second monitor to allow multiple users to use the PC at the same time. This is quite possible, but with some limitations, which we will also discuss.

2. Requirements for connected displays

It is desirable that all simultaneously used displays be as identical as possible – have the same size, resolution, height, tilt, screen quality, and also, if possible, narrow bezels.

It is also highly desirable that they have several different modern digital connectors (DVI, DP, HDMI), which will expand the possibility of their simultaneous connection to different video card and motherboard connectors.

If you want to create a frameless or multi-display system, then the monitors must have special mounts (VESA type) to securely connect them to each other on a bracket that must be selected in advance.

Some manufacturers (such as DELL) have displays that support Multi-Stream Transport (MST) specifically optimized for multi-display configurations. They not only have thin bezels, but can be connected to a PC with just one DisplayPort (DP) cable, and then connected to each other with the same cable via a DP connector. Those. Only one cable is connected to the computer, which is very convenient and does not require additional connectors on the video card. Up to 4 Full HD displays (1920×1080, 1920×1200) or 2 displays at 2K resolution (2560×1440, 2560×1600) so that the total resolution of all monitors does not exceed 4K (3840×2160, 4096×2160). This limitation is caused by the bandwidth of the DisplayPort v1.2 standard.

If you want to combine two displays for gaming, then it is good if they have a curved screen, this will improve the perception and immersion in the game. Although in this case it is better to purchase one ultra-wide monitor. The exception is if you already have one good monitor and you can buy a second one of the same kind.

Of course, you can connect completely different monitors, but their use may not be comfortable. It is better that they stand flush, do not differ in size and color reproduction. However, if you already have them – try, you will not lose anything. If you buy a second monitor, then it is better to follow our recommendations.

3. How to connect multiple monitors to one PC

Connecting two monitors with different interface connectors to a computer with a modern video card usually does not cause problems. They simply connect each to their own video card connector, the maximum that is required is to purchase the appropriate cable if the one you need is not available.

Problems start when the second monitor does not have a suitable connector. In some cases, this can be solved with an adapter or a special cable (DVI-HDMI, DP-HDMI, etc.) – this is the simplest and most correct solution.

But if your monitor only has an outdated VGA (D-SUB) connector, this can be a real problem. The fact is that old video cards had a DVI-I output with the ability to connect such monitors via a DVI-VGA adapter.

Modern video cards use a DVI-D connector, which does not output an analog VGA signal and there are no corresponding outputs for connecting such an adapter, and it is impossible to connect a monitor through it. Yes, there are special converters (DVI-VGA, HDMI-VGA), but the quality of the image during conversion is seriously affected (the picture becomes soapy, the color reproduction deteriorates), so this is a bad decision.

However, there is a way out – if your motherboard has a VGA connector and the BIOS has the ability to force the integrated graphics of the processor to be enabled, then the monitor can be connected to this connector. After that, the operating system will see two video cards and display the image on both monitors. The only thing you will need to do is update the drivers for the integrated graphics, if the system does not automatically do this.

This solution is quite suitable for any work tasks, you can create both several separate desktops and one common space. However, this is not suitable for games – even if you manage to run the game on a discrete video card, and display the image on a monitor connected to the motherboard (I succeeded), it will work poorly and not very stable (quality and performance will be lower, lags are possible) .

If you want to connect more than two monitors, then be aware that the cheapest video cards only support connecting 2 monitors, most of the other 3 monitors, despite the fact that they may have more connectors. But do not forget that one or more monitors can still be connected to the motherboard (if it supports the simultaneous operation of discrete and integrated graphics). How many monitors this or that video card or motherboard supports, see the specification on the manufacturer’s website.

There are also special multi-display adapters that allow you to connect several monitors to one PC or laptop connector. For example, such adapters are manufactured by Matrox – they are not cheap, but they provide high picture quality.

Just don’t confuse them with regular video splitters that simply display the same picture on multiple monitors.

4. Nuances of creating multi-display configurations

First, for creating configurations with 4-8 monitors, there are monitors with MST support, which I have already mentioned. This is a great option, as it allows you to connect up to 4 monitors with FHD resolution to the DP connector on your video card or motherboard with a single cable. Thus, up to 8 monitors can be connected to the two DP connectors. The disadvantage of this solution may be the high cost of the monitors themselves.

Secondly, there are special video cards for creating multi-display configurations with a large number of connectors. For example, Matrox video cards, which can have 4 to 9 DP or HDMI ports.

However, they are quite expensive and are only suitable for displaying images on displays, making some calculations on them or not playing. So it’s more of a solution for creating a wealthy trader’s workplace.

You can also connect a large number of monitors using professional nVidia video cards from the NVS or Quadro series, entry-level models are several times cheaper.

Affordable professional video cards are from the French company PNY, they are equipped with 3-8 miniDP or HDMI ports. Also included are miniDP-DP or miniDP-DVI adapters.
