Manufactured by Google, Nest Thermostats are web-connected smart thermostats that allow you to remotely control the temperature in your home using your phone, tablet, and even voice commands with a compatible smart speaker or smart display.

Available in several models and generations, installing a Nest Thermostat takes a little bit of time and patience but can be a totally do-it-yourself (DIY) endeavor if you’re willing to put aside an hour on your next free weekend.

Can you install a Nest Thermostat?

For some, installing one of these smart devices might seem complicated and intimidating; after all, there’s wiring to worry about, right? The truth is, manufacturers like Nest have made installing a smart thermostat so easy that anyone can do it — even if you have zero experience with any kind of wiring. Here’s everything you need to know.

Decide on your level of smarts: Choose your Nest

Before you install anything, you’ll have a choice to make, at least with a Google Nest thermostat: The specific model.

Nest has a few different models, like the original Nest Learning Thermostat and the newer 2020 Nest Thermostat. Both install in much the same way. If you want to go into detail on which one is best, check out our comparison: Google Nest Thermostat versus Google Nest Learning Thermostat.

The Nest Learning Thermostat is the flagship model. As the name suggests, it learns your home and your comings and goings, and it can automatically respond to adjust temperatures. Then, over time, it takes this pattern of recognition and adapts your energy usage. It’s super smart (with app and voice control), but it comes at a price — the Nest Learning Thermostat runs about $249.

This is what you could call a budget model. Coming in at a wallet-friendly $129, it makes this smart technology far more accessible. But with its pared-down price tag comes fewer smarts — you’ll need to program this thermostat yourself, but beyond that, you still get an adaptable smart thermostat that knows when you’re home and when you’re not, with a companion app and voice control for a great price.

Check your furnace compatibility

Before you click the Buy button, verify that the device will be compatible with your furnace. Nest’s website lets you check before you buy. It’s disappointing to think you’re about to add cool new tech to your home only to have to ship it back for a refund. Avoid frustration and check in advance by going to Nest’s website.

How can you tell? Just pop the cover off your current thermostat and see which wires you have now. Input your findings into the website checker and wait for your results.

Look for a C-wire

In some cases, you will need what’s called a C-wire to properly power your thermostat. A C-wire is just one of the wires that runs from the furnace to the thermostat. When you peek behind the cover, you’ll be able to see what you’ve got. If you have an older furnace system without a C-wire, it will likely work with a Nest Learning Thermostat, but not so much with the new 2020 Nest Thermostat.

Step by step: How to install your Nest thermostat

There are essentially three phases to this process: Installation, setup, and programming or learning.

Step 1: The first thing you’ll want to do is download the Nest app. The best part is that the Nest app will guide you through the process step by step and offer helpful videos and photos.

Step 2: Next, turn off the power for your home’s HVAC. While most furnace systems are low voltage, you still need to turn off the breaker to the system for safety.

Step 3: Remove your current thermostat cover. Take a photo of the existing wiring. You’ll need this for reference later.

Step 4: Disconnect and label existing wires. Nest supplies you with tiny labels so you can keep track of which wires are which — use them.

Step 5: Remove the old thermostat. Then remove the old base and wall plate, and attach the new Nest wall plate and base. Make sure everything is nice and level.

Step 6: Now it’s time to wire up your new Nest thermostat. Connect the wires to your Nest thermostat’s base by following the wiring diagram from the Nest app.

Step 7: Next, attach the Nest faceplate. This is the fun part — clip the new faceplate on, and wait for the magic to happen.

Step 8: Restore power. After turning the power back on, your Nest should power up on its own. In some cases, it may need to charge up a bit first.

Step 9: With the faceplate now operational, the app will help you with the rest, which will involve making some choices regarding settings and preferences.

Step 10: The final step will be to program your thermostat in the app, or, if you opted for the Nest Learning Thermostat, it will start its learning phase, which may take a couple of weeks.

Setting up a Nest thermostat is relatively easy. While it does take some time — allowing about an hour from start to finish, including programming time, is a good idea — you can easily have this done in an evening or on the weekend. It will also take some time before you start to notice those energy savings on your heating bill, but that’s OK because installing a device like a Nest thermostat is a long-term play.

Nest thermostats are also excellent for those who have cabins or cottages, second homes, or office spaces to manage. You can do a lot from your smartphone using the Nest app and not use energy unnecessarily.

How to install a Nest Thermostat without a C-wire

Depending on the wiring of your home, your HVAC system may not actually have a C-wire at all. Traditionally, the C-wire is an essential part of connecting any kind of newer thermostat, but not to worry if you don’t have one. Google makes a C-wire adapter that you can purchase to get your new Nest connected without having to figure in the expense of having a professional install a brand-new C-wire.

Once you’ve got your hands on a C-wire adapter, follow the next several steps to get it wired into your home’s HVAC system, and finally into your Nest thermostat.

Keep in mind that the C-wire adapter only works with 24 VAC systems and is only compatible with third-generation Nest Thermostat products.

Step 1: As covered in the previous section, the first thing you’ll want to do is cut power to the HVAC system. Then, go ahead and remove the faceplate of your Nest Thermostat to expose the wiring terminals underneath.

Step 2: Connect the C-wire adapter to your furnace air handler or zone controller. The adapter kit comes with easy-to-follow instructions on how to do so.

Step 3: Once the adapter is in place, connect the remaining leads to the proper terminals and put the faceplate back on your thermostat.

Step 4: Turn the power back on to your HVAC system. Now your Nest Thermostat should boot up without an issue.

Installing the thermostat is quite simple and will only take 20-30 minutes of your time. Be sure to carefully follow the instructions below for a successful installation and setup.

When you begin to install the nest thermostat, make sure all hardware is in place. These include screws, screwdriver, stickers, trim plate, and the socket block itself. Once you have them, be sure to follow the instructions below:

Procedure 1: Uninstalling the Current Thermostat

Before you begin, you will first need to uninstall the current thermostat in your home. This is achieved with the following steps:

Step 1: Power off your Nest thermostat

First of all, you need to find the power source of your old thermostat and turn it off. This will prevent the risk of electric shock or a blown fuse. With electricity, you must first think about safety before anything else.

Step 2: Get rid of your current thermostat

After disconnecting the power supply, you can proceed to remove the current thermostat. You can do this by removing the thermostat housing from the wall. Some of them can simply be fixed and therefore easily removed. However, you may need to unscrew others from the wall with the supplied screwdriver.

Step 3: Label wires

Wires attached to the current thermostat must be carefully labeled before being removed. This label will help you when connecting the wires to your new Nest thermostat, so you should consider labeling or taking a photo of them. For example, the yellow wire will be connected to the port labeled Y, the red wire to R, and so on.

Step 4: Disconnect wires from your thermostat

After making sure you labeled the wires correctly, you can go ahead and unscrew the wires from the current thermostat ports. You can do this with an available screwdriver. After that, you can now completely remove the thermostat and get rid of the wall plate.

Procedure 2: Install New Nest Thermostat

Once you have disposed of the old thermostat, you can proceed to install the new Nest thermostat. Be sure to carefully follow the instructions below for a successful installation:

Step 1: Mark the Position of the Thermostat Socket

You need to place the base plate of the socket against the wall with the wires threaded through the center hole. Align it with the built-in leveler and mark the two screw holes with a pencil so the plate stays level even after you’ve screwed it in.

Step 2: Attach the nest base plate to the wall.

You will then need to attach the Nest base plate to the wall using screws and a screwdriver. Make sure the base plate stays level as you drive the screws into the wall.

Step 3: Connect the wires to the plate socket

You can then connect each labeled wire to the corresponding label on the base board by inserting the wires into the corresponding holes. Press the button, insert the wire all the way and release the button. The tab located at the end of the hole should click into place when the wire is connected correctly.

Procedure 3: Adjusting the Thermostat Socket

Once you’ve completed the installation, you’ll set up the socket to get started. To set it up, you must follow the steps below:

Step 1: Turn the power back on

You need to turn the power back on before installing the socket. This should turn on your nest thermostat, however, if it doesn’t, you’ll need to carefully connect the wires to the nest plate. Once it is enabled, you can continue with the setup process.

Step 2 Connect the socket to the Wi-Fi network.

The most important thing to do is connect your Nest thermostat to your home Wi-Fi network. You will need to select a Wi-Fi network from the provided list and enter a password in order to successfully connect the thermostat.

Step 3: Follow the on-screen instructions

You will then need to follow the on-screen instructions that appear on the socket screen to complete the installation process. This will include steps such as setting your location, entering a zip code, choosing where your thermostat is in your home, and other advanced settings. Be sure to enter the correct information as you continue with the installation process.

Step 4: Set your preferred temperature

When you’re done with the advanced settings, you can set your preferred temperature to be displayed on the screen. You can achieve this by turning the socket clockwise to increase the temperature or counterclockwise to decrease it.

With your phone you will be able to remotely monitor and control your nest thermostat. This is possible through the use of the Nest mobile app. The app is available for Android and iOS devices, so you can download it from the Google Play Store or the App Store. The smart thermostat is a great accessory that allows you to not only control the temperature of your home from your phone, but also save money on utility bills. Here’s how to install and set up a learning nest thermostat in your own home.

Warning : This is a project for the confident DIYer. There is no shame in having someone do the actual wiring for you if you lack the skill or knowledge to do so. If you read the beginning of this article and immediately visualized as to do this based on past experienced switches and outputs, you are probably good. If you’ve opened the article not sure how exactly we’re going to pull this trick, it’s time to call that safety savvy conductor or electrician. Also note that it may be against the law, code or regulation to do so without permission, or may void your insurance or warranty. Check local regulations before proceeding.

What is a nest thermostat and why do I want one?

The Nest thermostat is one of the most popular smart thermostats on the market, mainly due to its unique design and easy to use user interface. It even lets you control the heating and cooling of your home right from your smartphone.

But the biggest selling point is that Nest learns your habits and can eventually do everything automatically. So if you tend to turn off the heat when you go to bed and turn it on when you wake up, the Nest will know about it and do it for you without having to manually turn it on.

The Nest can also know if you’re at home or not based on your phone’s location and the Nest’s built-in motion sensor. You can also set it manually and let the nest know if you are at home or will be away for a day or weekend so it can heat or cool your house accordingly.

Will the nest thermostat work in my home?

You might think that the Nest Thermostat will work with any thermostat setup in any home, but that’s not entirely true.

The socket will work with any low voltage system, but it will not work with high voltage systems (also known as line voltage). If you don’t know what system you have, you can quickly unplug your current thermostat and take a look at the wiring.

If you see a few tiny wires in different colors, then you probably have a low voltage system, but if you only see 2-4 large wires that are connected to wire nuts, then you probably have a high voltage system. You can also look at the thermostat itself to see how many volts it has. If it reads something like “110 VAC”, “115 VAC” or “120 VAC” then you have a high voltage system and the jack will not work.

Image Can be converted to a low voltage system if you have a high voltage system, but it is quite attractive and requires a bit of know-how, so if you absolutely want to install a socket thermostat, your best bet is to call a professional to convert your system.

Without all that being said, if everything looks good on your end, here’s how to install and set up your nest thermostat.

Step one: remove the current thermostat

Locate the thermostat and turn it off. It will still be on, but you must turn off the heating, cooling, and fan. It is also recommended to remove backup batteries if your thermostat has one.

Then you need to turn off the heating and cooling in the switch box. Sometimes the oven and air conditioner are on two separate switches, so you need to turn both off. Remember that not only is this for your own safety, but it doesn’t turn off heating and cooling completely, it could blow a fuse that will require an electrician to fix it. You may also need to turn off the third switch for the wire that powers the thermostat. Your switch diagram can tell which switch the thermostat is connected to, but if not, it’s safe to bet that if your thermostat is in your living room, unplugging the living room switch will do the trick.

Also, your oven’s main switch may be near the oven itself, not on the switch box.

Then remove the thermostat housing from the wall. It’s usually just clipped and requires a little tug to get it off, but you may have to unscrew yours. From there, you should be able to see your thermostat’s wiring. We recommend using a voltage tester and confirm that it is not powered. If there is, you need to go back to the switch box and try to turn off the other switch. Image

This next step is important. Take a snapshot of your current wire setup and note where each wire runs. In most cases the color of the wire will correctly match the letter of the screw it is connected to (e.g. the yellow wire is connected to “Y”, the white wire is connected to “W”, etc.) but sometimes this isn’t the case and you have there may be something like a blue wire connected to “Y” as in the photo below. You can also use the included wire tags in the Nest training brochure to label the wires, but taking pictures and pointing out where the wires go is enough.

Then unscrew the wires from the screw terminals using the screwdriver supplied with the socket. If there are any jumpers (i.e. short cables running from one terminal to another) you can remove them and throw them away as you won’t need them for the socket. Once you’ve disconnected all the wires you can remove the thermostat completely and remove the panel with the thermostat, which is probably attached to the wall with a few screws. Image

Step Two: Install the Socket Thermostat

Take the socket base plate and stick it on the wall where you want the socket thermostat to go. Use the built-in leveler to make it even. From there, use a pencil and mark where the two screws should be – one at the top and one at the bottom.

If the drywall has a stud where you want the screws to go in, you need to pre-drill small holes first before screwing in the base plate. Otherwise, the included screws are self-tapping and can be easily incorporated into the drywall without pre-drilling. Drywall anchors are not needed.

When you’re ready to drive in the screws (a drill is highly recommended for this), place the base plate back on the wall where you want it and feed the wires through the center hole (including the patch panel behind the base plate if you want – it’s fine to use if you don’t want putty and paint over where the old thermostat was). Take two screws and insert them into the wall, making sure the slab stays level as you do so.

You will then connect the wires to the socket base plate. If you don’t know where each wire goes, you can use Nest’s wire diagram helper on the web, which tells you which wires go into which ports, as shown below. You will need to straighten the wires before connecting the wires to the jack base plate. with needle-nosed pliers. To insert and secure the wire, press the button and insert the wire until it stops. Then go up the button. Give the wire a good tug to make sure it’s tight and it doesn’t come out. Once all the wires are in, push the bunch inward as far as they go so they don’t stick past the base plate. Then take the main socket thermostat block, making sure the logo The Nest is at the top and then just push it in until it clicks. Remove the plastic that covers the motion sensor. Step three: Install the nest thermostat

The first step in setting the nest thermostat is to select the language. To navigate a setting (and also the various menus once you’ve set it up), turn the silver dial on the device in any direction to move the on-screen selector, then press the entire block to select it.

The next step is to connect the thermostat to your WiFi network, so click on the device to get started. Select your WiFi network from the list. Enter the password for your WiFi network and then move the selector to the checkmark icon when finished. that your thermostat is connected and connected to the network. Click the button to continue. Next, you need to set up your location. This will show the local weather on your thermostat. Click the button to continue. It may ask you if you live in an area that’s not even close to where you are, which is a bit odd, but just select No. Select the continent you live in. Enter your zip code using the silver dial to select the number. Click on the device to move to the next digit. Then choose where you live: Single-Family, Multi-Family, Apt./Condo, or Business. Choose where your thermostat is located in your house or apartment. You will then set the heating and cooling to make sure the thermostat is working properly. Press the button to continue. You will get a diagram showing you the wires detected by the nest thermostat. If everything looks good, click to continue. If not, you will probably have to re-install the wires in order to find them. The next screen will confirm your system. In most cases, you will have heating and cooling as well as a fan. Click to continue. You will then select the fuel source for your heating. If you don’t know it, select “I don’t know” from the list. After that, select the type of heating you have. The most common type is forced air heating, which will be the first option.Image

The next step is to set the minimum and maximum temperatures that the Nest should heat or cool your home when you leave. Click to continue.

It will ask you if your nest should start using heating or cooling. You will then set the minimum and maximum temperatures. You can leave both of these “off” if you don’t want to install them. Otherwise, use the silver dial to select the temperature for each one. You should now be able to test your system with the Nest thermostat to make sure everything is working properly. Click to continue. Choose whether you want to test heating, cooling, or just a fan. Whichever you choose, make sure air is coming out of the vents and that it is either warm or cool. If you like, find your oven or air conditioner and make sure it’s turned on. Once the testing is complete, the Nest thermostat itself is set up and ready to use, but you’ll also want to set up the Nest app on your smartphone. Image

Step Four: Set Up the Nest App for Remote Control

Once you have your nest thermostat installed, it’s time to install the app and connect it to the thermostat so you can control and change the temperature from your phone.

First, download the Nest app from the iTunes App Store or Google Play, depending on your device.

Once downloaded, open it and select Sign Up. Enter your email address and enter the password for your Nest account. Then click Register. Image

Select “I agree” to agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy and click “Continue” at the bottom of the next screen.

When prompted, give your home a name in the app and click Next. The next screen will ask you for your address, but your zip code is the only one required. Tap Next. On the next screen, you can set up Home/Away Assist, which uses your phone’s location to automatically detect if you’re at home or not and automatically adjusts your thermostat accordingly.
