MVNOs, like Visible or Mint Mobile, offer iPhones with cheap plans, often with interest-free payments over 12-24 months.

Although the major networks offer to finance over 36 months, being tied into their over-priced unlimited data plans for 3 years could mean wasting as much as $2,000!

Tips on finding the best iPhone deals

  • Start with mobile carriers: Mobile carriers tend to offer the best iPhone deals. There is one catch — in order to get their best deals, you’ll have to switch to their service. In some instances, you may also have to sign up for an unlimited plan.
  • Trade-in your old phone for credit: If you have an older phone to trade in, many carriers will give you a generous credit that could range from $100 to as high as $1,000 off. As a result, it pays to keep your smartphone’s cables, box, and accessories in good condition so you can get the most from your trade-in.
  • Check out MVNOs: Short for mobile virtual network operator, MVNOs operate on the infrastructure of existing networks. For instance, Verizon-owned Visible works on Verizon’s network, whereas Mint Mobile uses T-Mobile’s. MVNOs offer less costly plans than their bigger counterparts. In some instances, there are some trade-off such as less readily available customer support or slightly slower data speeds.
  • Don’t be afraid of refurbs: Apple offers some of the best refurbs in the industry. They refurbish their iPhone to look like new and we especially like the company’s refurbs because they’re all backed by the same 1-year warranty you’d get with a new Apple device.
  • Wait for the new models (if you can): If Apple follows its traditional keynote timeframe, the iPhone 15 will likely to be unveiled sometime in September. The launch of the new phone will likely bring about a price drop in the iPhone 14 family. If you can, we recommend waiting until Apple’s September keynote before buying a new iPhone.

VZGLYAD / “There is no contract, unfortunately” :: Economics

Apple placed an order for the supply of a large number of panels for the displays of its devices from the Russian company Monocrystal. This is reported by AppleInsider.ru with a link to an anonymous source from the factory.

Unfortunately, Apple did not conclude any contracts with us. Someone just misunderstood something

CJSC “Monocrystal” is located in Stavropol. The company that owns the production is one of the leaders in the world market of electronic materials used in high-tech solutions. The company’s activities are centered around synthetic sapphire and photovoltaic pastes.

Its product portfolio includes sapphire wafers from 2″ to 10″ in diameter, primarily used in light emitting diodes. This technology can be used in any electronic devices with displays. A feature of light-emitting diodes is reduced energy consumption and compliance with safety standards that meet all international standards.

One of the technical features of such plates is their high resistance to aggressive environments, which makes it possible to use the company’s products in mechanical engineering and instrumentation as high-temperature furnace windows, industrial scanners and other protective coatings.

According to analysts, CJSC “Monocrystal” owns 24% of the world market for sapphire plates. The estimated value of the company is $1 billion.

Defunct supplier

The list of Apple suppliers (which includes component manufacturers and assemblers) includes more than 150 companies, but so far not a single Russian company has been included here.

I must say that the display is the most expensive component of popular “apple” devices – iPhone and iPad. The display alone accounts for 12% of the iPhone 4S ($23) and 22% of the iPad 3 ($70).

In 2011, Apple established itself as the largest buyer of displays for smartphones and tablets. According to iSuppli, in 2012 the company will spend 9billion dollars – twice as much as in 2011 ($4.7 billion) and four times more than in 2010 ($2.1 billion).

According to Forbes, the main suppliers of iPhone panels are Samsung Display, LG Display, Toshiba Mobile Display, and Sharp Electronics. And the main suppliers of panels for the iPad are LG Display, Samsung Display and ChiMei Innolux. Although the highest-resolution panel included in the iPad 3 was originally made by Samsung, Toshiba and Sharp have both announced their intention to expand capacity in Low-Temperature Polysilicon Liquid Crystal Display (LTPSLCD), which can handle higher resolutions.

Meanwhile, AppleInsider.ru recalls that Apple already has a billion-dollar contract with Sharp, which has built an entire plant for the production of IGZO TFT panels. It is possible that in the future Apple devices will be equipped with Sharp displays and Monocrystal sapphire crystals.

Exactly the same plates were used to cover the camera on the recently released iPhone 5. As AppleInsider.ru believes, these glasses came from the Monocrystal CJSC factory and were used for the test version. In the future, it is possible that plates could be used in almost all Apple products, from the iPod Nano to the iPad.

In the Russian office of Apple, the VZGLYAD newspaper refused to comment on “rumors and speculations on this topic.” “It is company policy not to allow us to comment on rumors and speculation, which have always been around Apple,” said an Apple spokesperson. However, they did not refute the information about the deal with Monocrystal either.

But the representative of Monocrystal CJSC Sergey Bocharov told the VZGLYAD newspaper that, with the exception of the Finnish Vertu, today not a single company in the world uses sapphire glass for the displays of its devices. “All top models of Apple, Samsung, HTC use glass of increased resistance to scratches and impacts Gorilla Glass,” he explained.

The representative of the company emphasized that Monocrystal is not engaged in the production of displays, as journalists might have regarded, but sapphire plates. “You saw them in the photo. Moreover, the main product of our production is a round sapphire plate with a diameter of 5 centimeters. Think for yourself, how can it be used to create a rectangular display of a completely different diameter? As for the large plate, this is a piece version, one might say, a demonstration of our capabilities. We do not produce displays ourselves, we do not have such technologies,” Sergey Bocharov explained.

“Unfortunately, Apple did not enter into any contracts with us. Someone just misunderstood something,” he added.

And everything could be different

Apple does not use Russian parts in its devices, but uses Russian technologies, in particular elements of geosearch programs, notes Andrey Vernikov, Deputy General Director for Investment Analysis at Zerich Capital Management Investment Company. As for the information about the order for a large batch of panels for displays from Monocrystal, this could well turn out to be true, he believes.

“A patent war is going on between Apple and Samsung, because of this, the former is reviewing its supply chains in order not to strengthen Samsung’s power with its orders,” Vernikov argues. “Samsung’s place as a supplier of displays could be taken by LG Display and Sharp, and glass suppliers could change along with new display suppliers.”

As for Monocrystal itself, cooperation with Apple could have a positive impact on its image. “In terms of profit, the benefit would not be so obvious. Apple is famous for its ability to knock out record discounts from suppliers, which was previously dissatisfied with the Korean giant Samsung, ”reminds Andrey Vernikov.

According to Leonid Matveev, Leading Analyst of Alpari’s Analytical Department, the deal with Apple could serve as a good signal for Russia, as it is in line with the strategic directions of the policy, which implies moving away from raw material dependence.
