Our review
The tabletop ice maker is one of those devices that you think you don’t need. But then when you have it, you are very grateful. Even though I love making drinks at home, I think ice cube trays are great for my purposes. When I serve tropical drinks in tiki mugs or even cobblers, I just break the cubes. It wasn’t until I received the GE Profile Opal Nugget Ice Maker, which we voted our best ice maker overall, that I realized how much I was missing from my home bar for testing.
But is it worth making room and paying the price?
Design
Weighing 44 pounds and measuring 17.25 x 10.5 x 15.5 inches, this GE Profile Opal Nugget Ice Maker is a device that has to stay in place, like a microwave oven. It’s either good or bad, depending on how often you use it. Luckily, I had just the right place for it in my kitchen: right between the fridge and sink, which is handy for draining the water and starting the cleaning cycle, as well as chilling drinks taken out of the fridge. Despite the machine’s height, it only managed to clear my upper kitchen cabinets by only half an inch. But its size takes up a significant portion of the countertop: a problem if kitchen space is at a premium.
Brushed stainless steel finish and elegant style make it match with almost any kitchen décor. However, this finish is prone to smudges, splashes, and fingerprints, and is quite difficult to completely clean. This can only be a problem if you’re a clean freak and/or trying to take pristine photos for a product review.
Clear plastic drawer that holds 3 pounds of ice and is illuminated by an overhead night light to show off the ice beautifully. This nice touch will be appreciated by those who like to watch the ice fall. Drain holes at the bottom rear of the drawer allow melt water to drain into the water tank underneath. Just don’t make the mistake of taking the drawer out of the car and using it as an ice bucket or get ready to clean up. The drawer actually slides out and hangs on the machine at an angle. Its opening is wide enough to scoop ice with the included ice scoop.
If you can’t empty the box right away, the front of the box is triple-walled to better insulate the ice. How effective is it in preventing ice melt? The first time I made ice with the GE Profile Opal, I mistakenly thought it would shut off after it used up all the ice making water. This is wrong; you have to press the button to turn it off. So I left it on and then came back for the night. I had already emptied his container and figured all the remaining ice would just melt in the tank.
After leaving the car on for six hours overnight, I woke up to find the trash can full of ice chunks. The nuggets were a little stuck together, but not a solid block. They were easy to separate.
My GE Profile Opal Nugget Ice Maker, which is older and $50 less than the brand new 2.0 model, comes with a side tank. Earlier versions only offered a side tank as an option. It serves to increase ice making capacity (up to 9 lbs) without having to constantly refill the water tank.
Performance
After using this ice maker for a couple of weeks, I already had a pretty good idea of its capabilities. It only has one button to operate and you need to know the meaning of its multicolored indicator rings to understand what is happening with the machine. So in preparation for an intimate cocktail party, I started making ice three hours in advance so I could have a few pounds “just in case” in the freezer. But in the end, I had to cut corners by allocating a glass of fresh ice and my emergency ice to each drink to make sure no one was left without it.
It took the machine about 30 minutes to make enough nuggets for one drink and an hour to make a pound of ice. It might not be as convenient as having a store-bought ice pack ready, but it’s definitely faster than a freezer, which can take all day to make a few pounds. The ice that Opal makes is restaurant quality, perfect size and not wet. Just start making ice before the party starts and put it in the fridge or freezer; store it in a freezer bag to make it easier to break.

One problem found while partying is that warm air is constantly blown out of the machine’s side vents when it’s running, meaning you’ll want to move your liquor bottles, cocktail ingredients, and ice bucket in another place so that they do not heat up. The machine needs 3 inches of clearance in the back and sides to allow it to breathe. But with the warm air that comes out when it’s running, you’ll end up expanding the perimeter a little more to about 12 inches.
In terms of ice making noise, the machine is not particularly loud, only the hum from the fan and the occasional rumble of ice pieces falling into the bin that you can hear from the next room. When it starts pounding into the water from the side tank, there are a few buzzes and gurgles from air bubbles.
Features
This GE Profile Opal Nugget Ice Maker, which is a pre-new Ice Maker 2.0 model, is Bluetooth compatible, allowing you to connect your phone via the Opal app and control the ice making process and schedule ice making times. You just need to be within range of the machine, unlike the 2.0 which has Wi-Fi, allowing you to connect to the ice machine even when you’re not at home. Side water tank for 9pounds of ice can be removed and reattached for parties when you don’t want to keep an eye on the water tank. It attaches easily to the side of the ice maker with magnets and an attached drain tube.

Cleaning
The ice maker needs to be cleaned regularly, especially if you have not used it for several days. For those who need a reminder, the machine signals it’s time to clean by turning the display ring around the front button in solid yellow. Fortunately, the cleaning process can be turned on by flipping the switch on the back of the device. And it’s even easier when your car is next to a sink, as you not only need to drain the water, but also fresh water to flush it out.
Cleaning involves pouring a mixture of five cups of water and a teaspoon of bleach into a water tank and starting a cleaning cycle. After three minutes, the light ring will flash, signaling the need to drain the water from the machine. To do this, simply disconnect the drain hoses at the back of the machine and place them in a sink or bucket. You will need to repeat this process with five cups of fresh water three more times. Again, the ring of light will let you know when it’s done: the ring will get brighter after each cycle and turn solid yellow when it’s done.
The whole process takes about 30 minutes.
For deeper cleaning of mineral deposits, fill the reservoir with vinegar to the maximum fill mark and run three cleaning cycles. Or you can buy an ice maker descaling agent and cleaning solution online. The Opal cleaning kit that GE used to sell for their ice machines is no longer available. This cleaning process should be done every six months to keep your ice maker working properly.
To clean the side tank, you need to remove and drain it, then wash it by hand with mild dishwashing detergent and warm water. Rinse it thoroughly and let it air dry. Never wash any of the ice maker components in the dishwasher.
Price
For a handy item, the GE Profile Opal Nugget Ice Maker, with an MSRP of $549, is expensive, especially when you consider there are other decent options out there for around $100. But if you love nugget ice, regularly drink tropical cocktails at home, and/or care about looks, it might be worth investing in this sleek-looking machine with its bells and whistles.
It comes with a one year parts and labor warranty.
Competition: GE Profile Opal Nugget Ice Maker vs. Newair Nugget Ice Maker
Compared to the similarly priced Newair Nugget Ice Maker (see Amazon), which won the “Best for Nugget Ice” title in our Best Ice Maker Review , GE can’t keep up with ice production. It produces 24 pounds of ice per day and takes about 15 minutes to produce its first nuggets, while Newair can produce 40 pounds per day and takes 5 minutes to drop the first batch. The Newair is also 0.75″ shorter, though 0.8″ deeper. But not only does the GE look prettier, it also comes with an app that lets you control the machine and even schedule when you want to make ice.

Many portable ice makers produce opaque “bullet” ice that tends to melt relatively quickly. This has its pros and cons from a technical point of view. However, pure ice tends to be harder and colder, which means it lasts longer in both the holding bin and the glass.
The Sentern Portable Tabletop Clear Ice Maker is specially designed to produce hard and clear ice cubes. Then they also carefully insulated the collection container to keep the ice frozen longer. One cycle takes about 15 minutes, which is a little longer than some participants, but the ice lasts longer.

Total ice production per day
Campers, campers and other outdoor enthusiasts tend to lean towards portable ice makers that can keep their coolers running without having to spend time running to the ice cream shop. This also means that they prioritize units that can produce more than 20 pounds of ice per day. This capacity not only saves you time, but also helps to pay for itself by saving on the cost of daily ice packs.
Cubes per lot
Considering how much ice you need at any given time can also be a factor depending on how you want to use your portable ice maker. If you are looking for a device that can provide on-demand ice for you and another person at your Man Cave cocktail station, then you may need more total dice per cycle.
Cube type and size
Most portable ice makers create “bullet ice” that tends to be opaque and melt faster than ice in cubes. From an engineering point of view, bullet ice lends itself to rapid freezing and thawing.
