Show seasonal allergies who’s boss
If you suffer from seasonal allergies, now is when they are at their worst. Stock up on allergy season’s most important products to keep your home, classroom, and office allergen-free. Start with an air purifier to strip the air of allergens like pollen and pet dander and replace existing air filters for improved air quality. Frequently dust, wipe down hard surfaces, and vacuum carpets and furniture to help eliminate pollen tracked in from outside and dander left behind by pets. When leaving the house, check the pollen count and bring a face mask to help filter the air you breath outside.
No matter what you do, it’s unlikely that the symptoms of seasonal allergies can be avoided entirely. Make sure to have over-the-counter cold and allergy medications on hand to battle symptoms, and stock up on facial tissues so you’ll always have one available when you need them.

Your camera has started to see the world in pink
Agent 007™ » Reviews » Your camera has started to see the world in pink
Suppose you have a video surveillance system installed. And one not-too-perfect day, you notice that one of your cameras has become overly optimistic about the world and sees everything in pink. What to do in this case and is it possible to deal with this problem on your own?
The problem, when instead of a normal full-color image, the camera starts to give out only one shade, most often pink, is quite common in “aged” video surveillance systems. This happens quite suddenly and for no apparent reason. Naturally, the overall quality of the video image deteriorates. There are many factors that cause this problem. It could be bad firmware, bad software, wrong settings, very cold environment, etc. But it is precisely from suddenly manifested that one is most often found. This is a defective IR (infra-red) filter installed on the camera. It blocks the infrared range of light rays and causes a general “pinkness” of the image. Such a filter is used to ensure that there are no unwanted side effects caused by infrared light (as part of natural ambient light) during daytime image capture. Therefore, an IR filter is installed in front of the sensor, designed to prevent infrared light from reaching the image sensor. The IR filter turns on/off automatically to filter out invisible light. Sometimes the filter does not turn off during the transition from night to daytime, or breaks down, causing the CCTV camera image to turn pink or green. Also, if the camera has been exposed to low temperatures, -20C or below, it may cause the IR filter to freeze and stick.
Let’s see what you can do to solve the problem and remove the rose-colored glasses from the camera:
- Turn the camera off and on again. Turn the camera off and on again by unplugging the power cord (wait at least 20 seconds). If you are using rechargeable wireless security cameras, remove the batteries and re-sync the camera with the app (or re-initialize).
- Check camera image settings. Someone may have changed the camera’s color settings and applied a pink or green overlay to the picture. Usually there is a default button in the picture settings section of each camera, click it to reset the picture settings to factory default, and then check the video from the camera to see if the single color screen is gone.
- Use a magnet. Use a strong magnet over the camera lens. This is done in case the IR cut filter is temporarily blocked inside the camera. Then, using a powerful magnet, you can manually move it in spite of the obstacle.
- Reset camera settings to factory settings. On some cameras, most commonly Hikvision or Dahua IP cameras, performing a factory reset will reset the camera to its original settings and force the IR cut filter to reset, eliminating the single color image issue. We also advise you to update the camera firmware, in rare cases, a single color image may be related to the software.
Please note that the following tips are related to tampering with the camera software or disassembling the body and require some knowledge, technical skills and care. In addition, opening the case will automatically void your device warranty, so think twice about whether to do this and whether to go straight to the last point of our advice. If so, we have warned you.
- Update device firmware. A rather complex and responsible process, which should be described in a separate article. If you know how to do it – do it, it can fix the situation. If you do not know, it is better to go to the next paragraph.
- Power cycle the IR LED board. Manually turn off the IR LEDs on the surveillance camera. You may need to refer to your camera’s instruction manual for instructions on how to turn off the IR illumination. Some manufacturers don’t have this “off” option in the settings, but you can do so by unplugging the cable physically. In any case, you need to turn off and on the IR LEDs several times for the IR filter to return to its original position, which will solve the problem of a single color image.
- Clean the inside of the camera housing. If you cover the camera lens with your hand, the sensor will react to the decrease in illumination and turn on the IR LEDs. Usually in this case, a sound is heard coming from the IR filter motor. There are times when the motor runs normally, but the filter glass does not move. The reason is that dust or condensation got into the mechanism and the glass got stuck. Small bags of silica gel can be used to collect condensation. It also makes sense to thoroughly clean the inside of the camera from dirt and dust.
- If this camera is dear to you, like a memory, and you are an experienced “homemade” – you can try to replace the IR-cut filter completely. Most often it looks like a separate module. You need to find the part number for your camera model online and order it. Usually an IR filter is cheaper (5-10 dollars), and it is quite easy and quick to replace it yourself.
- If none of the above worked… And your camera keeps showing you the pink world. Then consider that you have done everything possible to independently resuscitate the device and feel free to take it to a service center that will carefully diagnose your equipment and carry out the necessary repairs. Well, or humble yourself and enjoy the original color scheme.
We hope that our advice will help you solve the problem with color violation on the camera, if you suddenly have to face a similar problem.
It’s always nice to feel like a jack-of-all-trades and save some money on outsourcing.
For our part, we will continue the series of articles on the topic “Do It Yourself” and help you with advice in difficult situations. After all, if not us, then who

Why do Americans paint prison cell walls pink?
This story has its roots in the 40s of the last century, which was the heyday of the scientific activity of the Swiss psychologist Max Lüscher. He claimed to be able to determine the psychosomatic state of a person and even set the level of concentration of certain hormones in his body based on just the individual’s favorite color. He offered the participants in his experiments to arrange in order of preference 8 primary colors, and on this shaky foundation he distributed people into “personality categories”. This test can still be found today on the vast expanses of the Internet, and you can take it if you are experiencing an identity crisis. But you probably already guessed that this is pure pseudoscience and quackery. The clearest example of the Barnum effect, postulating that people have an innate tendency to accept any vague description of their personality as true.
Be that as it may, many years later, the American psychologist Alexander Schauss got acquainted with the Luscher test, after which he gave birth to his own idea: perhaps not hormones and emotions affect the perception of colors, but exactly the opposite – the color determines what a person feels in that or some other point in time. To confirm his suspicions, Schauss began to look at different colors and listen to his feelings. At some point, it seemed to him that they affect his cardiovascular system. Some of them seemed to increase the pulse, while others led to the exact opposite result.
One color in particular was the result of mixing one gallon of white latex interior paint with a pint of semi-gloss red exterior paint. Looking at it, Schauss “calmed down” so much that he almost lost consciousness. Deciding to certify the results of his then solitary experiment, he demonstrated his offspring to 153 other people. All of them, by the way, were men. Apparently, the psychologist did not trust the representatives of the weak half of humanity at all. However, everything could be explained by the specific scientific methods that Schauss adopted. In this particular case, the men looked at the color for a minute, and then began to squeeze the hand expander. The shown results of physical exercise turned out to be on average 23% worse than after looking at one of the shades of blue. It is clear that the correctness of such experiments is extremely doubtful, but we will talk about this a little later. For now, let’s continue with the main storyline.
The US government, having learned about the results of the experiments, decided to find practical applications for them. In 1979, Gene Baker and Ron Miller, directors of the Navy Correctional Center in Seattle, ordered the walls of two cells in their facility to be painted pink, suggested by Alexander Schauss. It seemed to them that this would reduce the level of aggression among the prisoners. Some time later, a report was published stating that the “hostile behavior” of the inmates was reduced after only 15 minutes of exposure to a pink background. This document caused a wide resonance in the relevant circles, and instead of doing real business to improve the atmosphere in their institutions, the authorities of many American prisons began to repaint the walls of the cells in “pink Baker-Miller”.
Soon the same hue made its way into psychiatric hospitals, rehabilitation clinics and even stadiums. In the latter case, two American football teams from the states of Iowa and Colorado distinguished themselves by repainting away locker rooms in the hope that this would weaken visiting athletes. The trick was quickly exposed, and a clause was introduced into the competition rules of the corresponding federation, according to which the dressing rooms of both teams must be painted in the same color. “Pink Baker-Miller” was also tested on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. The Swiss penitentiary system painted 30 cells in ten prisons in its lighter version. Also, several premises for keeping drunks in police stations underwent “modernization”.
And now it’s time to return, as promised, to the question of the dubiousness of the experiments of Alexander Schauss. His hypothesis about the change in heart rate under the influence of color really looks extremely controversial. She was tested many times, and each time the results were ambiguous. One study seemed to show that pink could lower blood pressure, but several others failed to replicate this result. In the course of another one, it was generally found that this shade works as an appetite suppressant. In general, we can conclude that it does indeed affect a person, but how exactly is still completely unclear.
But what is this, if not a natural biological reaction? Some researchers have suggested that this phenomenon may have a cultural explanation. As we remember, the tests were carried out by Schauss exclusively on men, and for them, pink was probably a symbol of femininity. It is possible that he subconsciously reassured them, forcing the feminine traits inherent in each to appear. This point of view really has the right to exist, since the psychology of color directly depends on cultural characteristics.
During the construction of the European Disneyland, the Americans exported as the main design element the bright purple color scheme, which in their homeland is associated with magic and royalty. However, they somehow forgot that the world is much wider than the United States. In France, where the traditions of Catholicism are stronger, purple is a symbol rather than magic, but despondency and death, as it is associated with the crucifixion of a well-known biblical character.
