Replacing an old device is straightforward—you just pick out a new one and hand over some cash. Getting money for your moderately older or unused electronics can be that easy, too. Instead of using online marketplaces to sell your tech, you can turn to a buyback service instead. They provide a quote based on the item’s age, specs, and condition, then you ship it to them on their dime and wait for the payout. You’ll earn less than if you sell it yourself, but you’ll deal with far less hassle.

The best of the bunch stand out from the rest both for the types of devices they’ll take and how much they pay out. You’ll find them below, along with tips for having a good experience.

Best services that buy your unwanted electronics


Decluttr accepts select iPhone, Samsung, and other Android smartphones, Apple Watches and iPads, MacBooks, Samsung and Kindle Fire tablets, Samsung smartwatches, and video game consoles. The service also even takes CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays if you want to extend your purging to media. To qualify for a quote, you must sell Decluttr at least one tech item or 10 media items worth a total of $5 or more.

Unlike rival sites, Decluttr does not promise a specific window for processing your gear once the package arrives. Instead, the company says that its on-site evaluation process happens “as quickly as possible.” That may be a detriment for some, but the exclusive use of UPS for its prepaid shipping labels may balance that out if your access to a post office or FedEx is limited. Decluttr’s website is easy to navigate, though we found it easier to select a device based on the picture-based links rather than via search.

Payments are sent via direct deposit or PayPal within one business day of an accepted offer. You can also choose to donate the money to a charity instead. Decluttr’s payouts tend to fall on the higher side, and often closely compete with ItsWorthMore (see below). However, the company treats items that are unopened or in mint condition the same as gently used gear for its evaluations, so you may make more cash on those elsewhere.

Our sample iPhone quote was higher than Gazelle but lower than ItsWorthMore, while offers for a Google Pixel 3 and a Samsung Galaxy S8+ beat both Gazelle and ItsWorthMore. An estimate for a 2015 MacBook tracked closely to ItsWorthMore for a baseline configuration.

For checks, Gazelle sends them via USPS first-class mail, which can take five to 10 days to arrive. Email confirmations with payment details are sent when payments are processed.

On average, Gazelle’s cash offers trend lower. Our sample iPhone and Pixel quotes were almost half of those from Decluttr and ItsWorthMore. The estimate for a Samsung Galaxy S also fell short of those from its rivals, though not quite so badly.

How to choose a computer for schoolchildren 2020-21? Which computer is better for studying

Step 1. Choose the type of device

There are four types:

  • monoblocks,
  • tablets,
  • desktop computers (PCs),
  • laptops.

Consider everything in order and figure out which computer is best suited for study.


Monoblock Apple iMac

This is a system unit and monitor in one case. Such devices take up less space than desktop computers and look very stylish. Modern monoblocks are equipped with a touch screen, which is convenient for drawing and familiar to children familiar with smartphones and tablets.

However, with all the advantages, this is not the most suitable option for studying: firstly, they quickly become obsolete, and updating their hardware simply cannot be done. Secondly, a monoblock is a very expensive thing. There are more or less budget models, but they are much inferior to laptops for the same price.


Samsung Galaxy Tab

Very compact, lightweight and relatively inexpensive device. Once upon a time, tablets were only suitable for primitive games and Internet surfing, but now they can give odds to many computers. Thousands of applications for iOS and Android allow you to solve a variety of tasks, including educational ones.

Still, you should not choose a tablet as the main device for studying. First of all, due to the lack of a keyboard: typing long abstracts on glass is inconvenient.


If the mobility of the device is fundamentally important – take a closer look at ultrabooks . This is a kind of hybrid tablet and laptop that can work with or without a keyboard. True, they are frankly expensive.

With monoblocks and tablets, everything is more or less clear. But the debate about what is better for studying: a laptop or a computer, will probably never subside. Let’s briefly talk about the pros and cons of these devices.

  • Mobility. You can take your laptop with you to school and anywhere else.
  • Battery operation. It is not necessary to have an outlet nearby.
  • Compact. A laptop does not need a special table and a place under it.
  • The software is already installed.


  • Brittle. If you spill tea on a PC keyboard, only the keyboard will suffer. For a laptop, the consequences will almost certainly be fatal.
  • Small screen. There are laptops with a large diagonal, but it is difficult and uncomfortable to carry them – which means that it will stand at home like a regular computer.
  • Complexity of modernization and repair. In older models, you could easily insert a new RAM module or change the battery. Now, in order to upgrade, in addition to special knowledge, you need a soldering iron and a share of courage.

It is often said that working on a laptop is not as convenient as working on a desktop computer. But here everything is decided by the competent organization of the workplace. It is enough to buy a comfortable mouse and a computer chair and make sure that the height of the table matches the height of the student.

When choosing a laptop, it is important to pay attention to the screen – it should have a good viewing angle (178°) and not glare. You can buy a large monitor for working with images and video in a pair with a laptop. And we also advise you to choose a laptop for study in a metal case – it is stronger.

  • Easy to upgrade and repair. You can almost endlessly improve the characteristics of the machine and adapt it to changing needs.
  • Ergonomic. You can choose a large monitor, comfortable keyboard and mouse.
  • Price. PCs are about 10% cheaper than laptops with similar parameters.
  • Reliability. Unlike a laptop, a desktop computer is difficult to drop, crush, and even more so, lose.


  • Not mobile.
  • Takes up a lot of space.

You can save money on buying a PC if you do not take a ready-made configuration, but order an assembly of parts of your choice. Large online hardware stores provide such services. It will be even cheaper to assemble the computer yourself: almost all parts can be found on the secondary market at a good price. It is not so difficult to figure out which components to choose for a student’s computer. More on that in the next step.

Step 2. We take into account the technical characteristics

There is no single answer, what is better to buy for study – a computer or a laptop – does not exist. Much depends on the age of the student.

In elementary school, a child will hardly need to carry a computer to school, so it is better not to buy a laptop for a first grader: it will become obsolete in four years. The best choice would be an inexpensive desktop computer. The main parameters to pay attention to are:

  • processor frequency,
  • amount of RAM,
  • video card.

Here is an approximate configuration of a budget computer for a primary school student.

Processor : dual core, such as Intel Celeron G4930 or AMD A6-7480.
RAM : 4 GB.
Video card : integrated.
Hard Drive : Solid State Drive (SSD), 120-240 GB.
Power supply : 400 W.

The cost of such an assembly for 2021 is about 15,000 ₽.

In secondary school, the child’s demands on the computer grow: someone is fond of modeling, programming or working with video, someone starts playing more advanced games. By the fifth grade, it is worth pumping a PC: increase the amount of RAM, put a more powerful processor, if necessary, a video card.

Here is a more advanced version for a teenager who works with demanding programs and loves to play:

Processor : Quad core, such as Intel Pentium G5600F or AMD A8 9600.
RAM : 16 GB.
Video card : Dedicated, 4 GB or more; e.g. NVIDIA GeForce GT 730.
Hard Drive : Solid State Drive (SSD), 500 GB.

It is worth thinking about buying a laptop for high school students: graduates will need it both at school and for trips to tutors, and after – at the university. More and more students are taking notes electronically. If a teenager already has a decent PC, there is no point in buying a top-end laptop. It is better to take a model from the middle price category, focusing primarily on battery life. Please note that manufacturers indicate battery life at low loads. Active use drains the battery 1.5-2 times faster.

Processor: dual or quad core, such as 7th generation Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3.
RAM : 8 GB.
Hard disk : 256-500 GB.
Screen size: 14″.

Step 3. Select related products

First of all, a personal computer needs monitor . You can’t skimp on a student’s vision. The choice largely depends on the availability of space. If a student is sitting at a standard desk with 50 centimeters from the eyes to the screen, a diagonal of 21-25 inches is ideal. If there is not enough space – take 19 inches. It is also important to pay attention to resolution, viewing angle, brightness and refresh rate.

Here are the characteristics of a good study monitor:

Diagonal : at least 19″.
Resolution : Full HD (1920×1080 pixels).
Viewing angle : 178°.

Sound reproduction requires speakers or at least headphones. Laptops have built-in audio, but the quality can’t be compared to external speakers.

This is the minimum set. Everything else depends on how the computer will be used. For example:

A student has poor eyesight → look for a device with a large and eye-safe screen.

The child is drawing or doing graphic design → you may need a quality monitor and a special drawing device – a graphics tablet.

Teen makes music → Buy a computer with a dedicated sound card, MIDI keyboard, and other compatible music devices.

The student is interested in 3D modeling, video processing or computer games → you need a powerful video card and, again, a good monitor.

You often move or like to travel → choose a light laptop.

For online learning you will need webcam (built-in in laptops) and headset with microphone .

The printer is very useful in studies, especially when working with notes and handouts.

If your child is interested in design, drawing, 3D modeling or working with video, you will need special software. Which one, ask your student.

In addition, an antivirus is required for all computers. Despite the abundance of free products, it is better to buy Kaspersky or Dr. Web. They protect personal data more reliably, and also have a parental control function: with their help, you can limit your child’s access to inappropriate content on the Web and the time spent playing games.


Step 5. Learning correctly at the computer

  • The distance from the screen to the eyes must be at least 50 centimeters. The monitor should be clearly in front of the eyes.
  • Don’t slouch while sitting at a computer. Straighten your shoulders and keep your back straight. Don’t tilt your neck forward. If the back of the chair is too far away, use a pillow.
  • Do not cross your legs, do not sit in Turkish. Legs should be bent at an angle of 90 degrees or slightly more, feet should be on the floor or a special stand.
  • Arms in a bent position, at an angle of just over 90 degrees. Elbows – not on weight.

We will not consider a laptop, because a laptop consists of, in fact, a laptop and an external power supply with a cable. We will consider a conventional desktop computer.

  2. The desktop computer can be assembled from different components according to your needs.

    What makes up a desktop computer

    Main computer components:

    System unit

    The system unit can also be called a case, a system unit, or simply a computer. This is a rectangular metal box that contains all the main components of the computer. System blocks come in different sizes:

    • Mini-ITX

    What is inside the system unit?

    1. Motherboard.
    2. Processor.

    9. Audio connectors . Speakers, headphones, microphone are connected here. The presence of this connector indicates that the motherboard has an integrated sound card.

    The processor is responsible for mathematical calculations. It can also be called the CPU (central processing unit), CPU, stone. It is inserted into a special connector on the motherboard – a socket. There are different processors, so it is important that the motherboard and processor match.

    The more powerful the processor, the more calculations it can perform per second. And the more it costs. And the hotter it gets.

    Cooling fans

Usually, a tube of thermal paste is included with the processor. A cooling fan is attached to the radiator. The fan is wired to the motherboard. The motherboard supplies power to the fan and controls its speed.

    There may be additional fans inside the chassis that draw hot air out of the chassis. The more fans and the faster they spin, the more noisy the computer. Mounting points for these fans and holes for air movement are provided in the case.


    Random access memory or RAM, RAM, is the “brains” of the computer, it is installed in special slots on the motherboard. There can be two, four or eight such connectors on the motherboard. The processor stores the results of its calculations in RAM. When the power is turned off, the RAM is cleared.

    The more gigabytes of RAM in total, the less the computer slows down, the more resource-demanding programs and games you can run on it.

    RAM is also different, so it is important that the motherboard and RAM fit together.

    Power supply

    The power supply is installed in a special place inside the system unit and looks like a box with a fan inside and a bunch of wires outside. A cable is connected to the power supply – it is plugged into a 220-volt outlet. Inside the computer, a lot of small wires come out of the power supply 12 Volts, 5 Volts, 3 Volts. They connect to the motherboard, hard drives, some fans.

    Video card

    A video card is needed to transfer images from a computer to a monitor. There are video cards that are already built into the motherboard. Such video cards are suitable for office computers for working with graphs, texts, tables. Colorful 3D games will no longer work on such a video card. For games and special engineering and design programs, you need a separate video card.

    The video card is inserted into a special slot on the motherboard. Fans are often installed on the video card.

    Sound card

    A sound card is needed to transmit sound from a computer to speakers or headphones. Most motherboards already have a built-in sound card, if your motherboard has one, then you usually do not need to buy an additional sound card.

    Lovers of quality sound, musicians, sound engineers buy additional sound cards. They are inserted into a special slot on the motherboard.

    Network card

    A network card is needed to connect to a computer on the Internet. Most motherboards already have a built-in network card, if your motherboard has one, then you usually do not need to buy an additional network card.

    Hard disk

    The hard disk stores your data – movies, music, documents. The larger the hard drive, the more data will fit.

    CD/DVD drive

    The drive is inserted into the front of the system unit. A drive is needed to read CDs or play DVDs. There are recorders that can write information to RW discs. In general, they are different.

    USB flash drives are now replacing disk drives, so it’s up to you whether you need one or not.


    The monitor is simple, it displays an image. The monitor is connected to the video card and to a 220 volt outlet. Before purchasing, please make sure that the monitor wire connector fits your video card connector.

    Keyboard and mouse

    The keyboard and mouse are needed to interact with the computer. The computer listens to what keys you press and where you move the mouse cursor.

    Wireless keyboard and mouse

    Wireless keyboards and mice are available. They connect to the system unit without wires. A battery is inserted into the keyboard (mouse), and a signal receiver the size of a coin is inserted into the system unit into the USB port.

    The pros and cons of wireless connectivity are obvious:

    • Plus, less tangled wires and less dust.
    • Minus – the batteries run out, usually at the most inopportune moment.

    Several types of connection of such mice are known. The main types include infrared, radio frequency, induction, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Each of them has its own characteristics

    Tip, if you are buying a computer for the first time, then choose a regular wired mouse without the bells and whistles.

    I use a regular wired mouse at home and at work.

    Multi-Button Mice

    Buy a regular three-button mouse that has a left button, a right button, and a middle roller button.

    Multi-button mice are used by avid computer gamers or those who work a lot with complex programs.


    Speakers are needed to play sound from the computer. The columns are also different. Depending on the sound card, you can connect stereo speakers, subwoofer, 5.1 speakers.

    Computer accessories

    • Webcam. Allows you to communicate via the Internet via video link.
    • Printer. Prints documents.
    • Scanner. Scans documents.
    • MFP (multifunction device) – printer, scanner and copier in one device.
    • Headphones. Listen to the sound and don’t disturb others.
    • UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply or UPS). Allows you to smoothly turn off the computer if there is no electricity at home. Provides 10 minutes of battery life for your computer.
    • Tablet and light pen. We draw like a brush.

    Internet equipment

    • Router or modem. One wire with the Internet comes to the router, and the router already distributes the Internet to all computers in your home. And phones, too, over a wireless Wi-Fi network.
    • Network card. Wired or wireless.

    What else can be connected to a computer

    • TV tuner. Converts an analog signal to digital. Can be combined with radio. Shows TV on computer
    • External portable hard drives.
    • NAS storage. Shared file storage for all computers in the house.
