Bluetooth devices are everywhere these days. I connect my phone to a Bluetooth speaker or headphones pretty much every day. These wireless connections work great and the technology has been proven over a number of years. But what if you are a musician wanting to take advantage of this technology and want to connect your guitar to a Bluetooth speaker?

There are two main ways to connect an electric guitar to a Bluetooth speaker. A Bluetooth transmitter can be plugged into the guitar’s jack socket and paired with the speaker. Or, you can connect your guitar to a Bluetooth transmitting device such as a laptop, and pair the laptop with the speaker.

Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages. Read on to learn the exact steps for connecting your electric guitar to a Bluetooth speaker, and which method will work best for you.

Why connect your guitar to a Bluetooth speaker?

There are two main reasons why you might want to connect your guitar to a Bluetooth speaker…

  • Use the speaker instead of an amplifier
  • Eliminate physical cable freeing up your movement while you play

If you already own a Bluetooth speaker, using it to play your guitar into is a great idea in theory. It could potentially avoid the cost of buying a guitar amplifier, while still being able to listen to your electric guitar amplified.

How to play your electric guitar without an amp is a very commonly asked question these days. For that reason, I have written a whole article on how to play electric guitar without an amp. It will show you several methods of playing amp-less in detail and is highly recommended if you are thinking about taking the no-amp route.

As Bluetooth is a wireless technology, it is natural to think you could use it to eliminate the cable connecting your guitar to your amp. Bluetooth can be used in this way, but there are better systems for wirelessly connecting guitars that do not use Bluetooth – see these examples (affiliate link) on Amazon.

The problem with using Bluetooth with your guitar is latency. This is the time delay between you playing a note on your guitar and you hearing it come out of the speaker. Bluetooth has noticeable latency which can be very distracting when playing.

Essentially, you hear every note you play twice – once acoustically when you hit the note on your guitar, and once a few milliseconds later out of the speaker. This really bothers some guitar players, to the point where they find it unusable. Bluetooth is fine for listening to music; a delay in this case doesn’t matter as there is only one source of sound.

Due to the latency, I cannot recommend Bluetooth as a connection method to a speaker or headphones. A physical cable or a dedicated wireless system will always be better as they do not have the latency associated with Bluetooth.

Having said all that, if you still want to connect your guitar to a Bluetooth speaker, read on!

Use a Bluetooth transmitter to connect a guitar to a speaker

For this method, you will need a Bluetooth transmitter to plug into your guitar. Something like this one (affiliate link) available from Amazon should be suitable. You will also need a mini-jack to ¼″ adapter like this one (affiliate link) from Amazon to make the transmitter fit your guitar’s jack socket.

Plug the Bluetooth transmitter into your electric guitar’s jack socket. Turn on your Bluetooth speaker and the transmitter. Pair the two devices – the exact method for doing this will depend on the particular devices. Consult the user manuals if necessary.

Once paired, turn up your guitar’s volume and play! You should now be hearing your guitar through the Bluetooth speaker.

This setup is nice and simple. There are only two devices – the transmitter and the speaker. This is the simplest and easiest-to-understand way to connect a guitar to a Bluetooth speaker.

However, although this will sound ok, it probably won’t sound great. An electric guitar is meant to be played through a guitar amplifier, using its features to produce the sound. Overdrive, gain, reverb, etc., and anything else an amp usually provides will not be heard here.

So the sound may be a little bit lifeless. You could attempt to get around this by using effects pedals if you have any. Instead of plugging the transmitter into the guitar, you could plug your guitar into an effects pedal and plug the transmitter into the output jack of a pedal. This way, you would at least be able to alter your sound using the pedal(s).

If you want to have your guitar sound like it would playing through a real guitar amp, the next method is probably a better choice for you…

Use another Bluetooth device to connect a guitar to a speaker

With this method, we will connect the guitar to a Bluetooth-transmitting device such as a laptop or a smartphone. I’ll use a laptop as an example in this article. We’ll then use this “intermediary” device to connect to the Bluetooth speaker.

You don’t get the same wireless freedom as before with this method – you need to connect to the intermediary device using a cable and an audio interface. But you will get a much better sound, if you use an amp sim (guitar amplifier simulator software) on a laptop. There are many completely free amp sims available that will do the job fine. And it still avoids you having to buy a guitar amp.

You also need more equipment for this method. An audio interface and laptop can be costly if you do not already own them.

If you need an audio interface, I highly recommend the Focusrite Scarlett series. These are what I have been using for years to connect my guitars to my computer for playing and recording. Here’s how you set up the equipment using this method…

  1. Plug your guitar into your audio interface
  2. Plug the audio interface into your computer (usually via USB or Thunderbird)
  3. Setup the audio interface drivers, inputs and outputs
  4. Install and setup an amp sim

Even if you are a complete novice, this article should help you get you playing your guitar through your computer.

    This should sound much better than the direct connection method discussed previously, with a transmitter plugged straight into the guitar. You can use the features of the amp sim to make it sound just like a real guitar amp.

    But you will still have the one major drawback of using Bluetooth – latency.

    Maybe Bluetooth technology will one day advance to the point of the latency being unnoticeable in the future. Until that day, I will avoid using Bluetooth for connecting my guitar to anything. But don’t let me put you off. You may find that you can live with the latency and that playing through a Bluetooth speaker works for you.

    There are two ways to connect a bluetooth speaker to a phone: a wired connection or via Bluetooth. Which method is better?     How to connect a Bluetooth speaker to your phone

    Connection with a mobile gadget can be wired or wireless. If cables are needed in the first case, then wireless synchronization depends on the connected Bluetooth or Wi-Fi (not all music speakers support).

    With the help of Bluetooth, which is found in all new smartphones and the same portable speakers, you can quickly and easily set up data exchange. How to do this and which option to connect a bluetooth speaker to a smartphone is better – further.

    Wired connection

    This requires a two-way audio cable (AUX) or USB and AUX cables. The first option refers to audio speakers (they have a built-in battery or are connected to the network for charging). The second one is used in the absence of these elements of power sources, when a smartphone acts as a battery for a musical gadget.

    Audio cable (AUX) – a wire, two ends of which have one 3.5 mm mini-jack. One end is inserted into the desired speaker jack, the other into the phone’s headphone jack. The connection of devices is completed by turning on the column. After connecting, the gadget’s screen should display the inscription “Audio jack connected”.

    In the case of the second connection option, the user needs to have:

    • AUX and USB cables;
    • micro USB to regular USB adapter.

    To connect:

    • Connect the USB adapter to the phone.
    • Plug the cable from the speaker into the USB socket.
    • Use the AUX cable in the dedicated jack to connect gadgets to each other to play music.

    With a cable, the user is dependent on both the phone and the speaker, because when moving, you need to carry both devices with you. But, despite this drawback, the sound will be transmitted without loss. The battery charge in this case is consumed slowly, but a compact power bank will not be superfluous. The device will help out if the user forgets to charge the phone.

    Wireless connection

    Universal method that does not require the use of wires. But this is an energy-intensive option. Its disadvantage is that the sound may not be of very high quality due to the transmission in a compressed format (does not apply to devices that support AptX).

    Connected via Bluetooth If the speaker and smartphone are equipped with NFC chips, connection is simplified. Data exchange between devices is automatic, you need to attach the speaker to the back of the mobile gadget, and then confirm the action on the phone (“OK”). There will be no connection problems even if Bluetooth chips of different versions are built into the speaker and smartphone.

    If the phone does not have this type of chip, the connection will have to be made manually. To do this, you need:

    1. Activate the wireless speaker and turn on the bluetooth button.
    2. In a smartphone, pull the “curtain” at the top of the screen and press the Bluetooth button. If this function is not on the quick access panel, you need to: open the phone settings, go to the “Connected devices” – “Bluetooth” section, move the slider to the right to enable it.
    3. After searching, all Bluetooth devices that are nearby will be displayed on the screen of the mobile gadget.
    4. Select a name corresponding to the column model. Tap on it – the connection of gadgets will begin.
    5. Successful pairing may require you to enter a code or hold down the power button for a few seconds.

    The next time you connect, data will be exchanged automatically when Bluetooth is on on both devices.

    Phone-specific connection

    If mobile gadgets are equipped with Android OS, connecting to bluetooth takes a couple of clicks: turn on the Bluetooth function, configure the necessary settings and start pairing with other devices.

    Regarding connecting the music speaker to the iPhone, the steps are slightly different from the previous version. But users of both smartphones and iPhones will cope with this task without any problems.

    Connecting to an Android phone

    How to connect bluetooth to a phone? First you need to turn on the speaker and press the Bluetooth button on the case (in some models there is no such button, so the device search process is automatic). Bluetooth connection on the speaker is signaled by an indicator on the case or a sound alert.

    Next, you need to activate bluetooth on your phone. If you are connecting a new device for the first time, you can do this using the menu on your phone. Select “Settings” – “Bluetooth” – activate the bluetooth module (move the slider to the right) and update the list of devices available for connection. After clicking on the name of the musical acoustics that appears, it will be included in the list of devices ready for connection.

    Important : There are phone models with a longer access path to the Bluetooth module: go to the menu, select “Settings” – “Wireless networks” / “Connected devices” – “Bluetooth”.

    Devices will be synchronized on subsequent connections automatically.

    Connecting to iPhone

    The steps are as follows:

    1. Turn on the portable speaker and activate the Bluetooth function.
    2. In the iPhone settings, click on the icon, which usually denotes the Bluetooth option.
    3. In the menu that appears, activate the “On” button (move the slider to the right).
    4. All nearby active devices will appear on the screen of the mobile gadget.
    5. Select the name of the music column, after which the automatic connection will occur.

    Depending on the model of the bluetooth speaker, the connection will be notified by sound or by changing the indicator on the case. All that remains is to turn on the music on the iPhone to check how successful the connection was.

    Before turning on the bluetooth, you need to make sure that the musical acoustics are working. After pressing the button to turn on the music device, a special indicator should light up. It confirms readiness to work. The absence of a light signal or the blinking of the LED may indicate that the battery needs to be charged.

    It is especially easy and quick to connect a portable speaker if the device has an NFC chip. Simply put your smartphone on the speaker. Activation will automatically occur and signal transmission will begin. Communication passes through NFC, and music is transmitted via Bluetooth.
