A large number of different connectors are used to connect blocks and assemblies of electronic equipment. Some connectors may contain dozens of pins. To join most of the blocks into a single unit, structures are used that have only two contacts. One is information or signal, and the other is common or “ground” and is designated as “GND” on the diagrams.

The composite RCA connector or “phono connector” has been developed and used to connect the nodes of electronic equipment since the 40s of the twentieth century. The design consists of two elements, conditionally called “Daddy” and “Mom”. The active male connector is mounted on the cable, and the passive female element is usually a socket and is mounted on the body of the electronic equipment. In some cases, for adapters, the passive element may also be mounted on the cable.

The active connector is made of a coaxial design, where the signal output is located inside a metal cup, which is a screen and is connected to a common wire. The signal pin is a metal rod that protrudes slightly from the housing. The space between the center terminal and the housing is filled with insulating material. In budget connectors, polyethylene or PVC is used for this, textolite or fiberglass is used in more advanced designs, and Teflon or ceramic provides insulation in professional connectors. The body of the product can be made of metal or plastic. In everyday life, this type of connector is usually called “Tulip”. The connection of the signal wire with the central contact is carried out by fixing it under the screw or by soldering. The common wire is connected to a metal cup by soldering or mechanically crimping the core in a special petal.

For reliable fixation of the metal cup in the nest, there are slots on it that spring the connection point under, providing reliable contact. In the passive element of the connector, the signal wire is soldered to the central terminal, and the ground (GND) is soldered to a special petal.

The protruding central contact of the active element allows you to connect individual blocks to each other by touch. But this is a disadvantage, since the signal wire is connected first, and there is no ground contact. When connecting some units of household equipment to each other, the resulting potential difference can damage the electronic components of the circuit. Most often this happens when connecting a TV to a TV – the output of a video card.

RCA input

Most often, an RCA or “Tulip” connection is used in consumer electronic equipment for switching input and output signals. The RCA audio/video input provides audio and video signal transmission in accordance with the accepted standard for frequency, current and voltage. The “Tulip” connector is a connector consisting of two elements. On household appliances, the input and output sockets are located on the back wall of the case and differ in marking and color. Audio input jacks or RCA audio input are labeled “Audio in put” and have the following colors:

Left channel – white
Right channel – red

The plug and socket for switching the video signal is always color-coded yellow. The Tulip input, in comparison with digital interfaces, does not provide high color accuracy when broadcasting a video signal from an external source to a TV. However, all household television receivers are equipped with such sockets.

RCA Output (Tulip)

What is RCA audio/video output. Tulip connectors are used in household appliances to connect individual units into a sound complex and to connect acoustic systems. Audio output connectors are marked “Audio out put” and have and are colored in the same colors as the input signals. If the low-frequency amplifier is designed for multi-channel sound reproduction, then the sockets on its body are color-coded as follows:

Front left channel – white
Front Right Channel – Red
Center speaker – green
woofer woofer – magenta
Left side channel – blue
Right Side Channel – Gray
Surround Left – Brown
Rear Right Channel – Light Brown

Each output is connected to its own speaker system, which provides multi-channel sound. This connection scheme is most often used in home theaters. Some models of household appliances use modern interfaces such as DVI-I and HDMI. Such interfaces are used in personal computers, but televisions may not be equipped with them. In order to connect a laptop to a TV receiver, you have to use an adapter – an adapter from HDMI to RCA.

On the RCA cable, four cables with sockets leave the HDMI connector. White and red, these are RCA audio outputs corresponding to the left and right audio channels, a video signal is transmitted through a cable with a yellow connector, and the black connector is designed to supply power to the signal converter circuit.

Entrance/exit “Tulip”

When choosing connectors for connecting cables, you need to pay attention to the manufacturer. Products of some firms from the Asian region are of poor quality. The use of low-quality plastic in the design of the connector leads to the fact that the central rod, to which the signal wire fits, loses its rigidity. This results in an alternating contact in the connection. It is better to choose connectors with a textolite or ceramic core. An unreliable connection is a screw clamp. It is best when the wire is fixed by soldering. Plastic product cases are used only in budget cables. Reliable RCA connectors have metal cases.
