Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace my refrigerator water filter?

Generally, it is advisable to change the refrigerator water filter in your fridge every 6 months. Manufacturers will often publish a statement like “change filter every 500 gallons or 6 months, whichever comes first”. We find that changing the filter at 6 months ensures that the filter is still doing its job at the time of change-out keeping your water tasting great.

What does “certification” mean on a refrigerator water filter for a refrigerator?

A filter certified to a particular quality standard will have undergone extensive testing to ensure the product’s safety and quality. Common certification standards for refrigerator water filters are NSF/ANSI 42, which relates to reduction claims for chlorine taste and odor (aesthetic effects) and NSF/ANSI 43, which relates to reduction claims for over 50 contaminants, including lead, cysts, VOC and many others (health effects).

How do I find the correct water filter for my refrigerator?

Use our filter finder utility to find your filter based on the brand and appearance of your fridge. To find your filter quickly – type model number of your refrigerator into the search box on our site. The model number is usually listed on the door or inside wall of the refrigerator. If you have the existing filter – simply type the part number into the search box on our site.

Will a refrigerator water filter for my refrigerator disinfect the water?

No, a refrigerator water filter’s main purpose is to improve the taste and smell of your water and ice, it will not disinfect the water or render clean water from water that is microbiologically unsafe. Manufacturers assume that the water entering the refrigerator is potable and safe to drink.

Describe your problem

Installing a new water or ice filter in the refrigerator? The water filter in the refrigerator needs to be changed every 6 months. For every 300 gallons that are filtered through the water filter, it should be removed and replaced. This quick guide will answer some of your questions about replacing your refrigerator water filter.

What does the water filter do? The water needed to produce this cold water and clean ice cubes passes through the water filter cartridge. This water filter is either inside or behind your refrigerator. The filter is designed to filter and purify water before bottling. The water filter removes any harmful contaminants and provides clean water.

The water filter is a very important part of the refrigerator dispenser system. If the water filter is not replaced regularly, the water dispenser or ice maker may not dispense properly, and the water and ice may look dirty or rusty.

How often to change the refrigerator water filter

It is recommended to replace the refrigerator water filter every 6 months or 180 days. If the water in your area contains “hard water”, the water filter may need to be changed more frequently. Most OEM water filters are designed to filter 300 gallons of water. If a refrigerator water filter is used to filter more than 300 gallons of water, the filter will not properly remove any contaminants that may be in the plumbing.

How to find the right water filter in your refrigerator

If you need help finding the right water filter, you can find it in the user manual, on the Internet by entering the make and model, or remove the old filter and write down the model number of the filter .

Where is the water filter in my refrigerator

To install a new water filter in the refrigerator, you will need to find out if the filter is inside the refrigerator and where it is located. Some older refrigerators may have a water filter located behind the refrigerator.

Most refrigerators have a water filter inside. Find out where it is by opening the refrigerator door and finding where the water filter is. In most refrigerators, the water filter is located in the upper right corner or in the center of the refrigerator behind a small door or unscrewed. If you’re having trouble, look up the instruction manual or check online. On Google or YouTube, enter Water filter location for ___________ Refrigerator model number __________.

The water used in the refrigerator comes from the domestic plumbing, usually coming from the back of the refrigerator. It is recommended to turn off the water supply before attempting to remove the old water filter. Most refrigerators do not require turning off the water, but it is recommended in the event of a leak when removing or replacing the filter.

How to Remove and Replace the Refrigerator Water Filter

1. Locate the water filter housing inside the refrigerator.
2. Press or rotate the indicated area to remove the filter cover (if applicable).
3. Remove the old water filter by pushing it in and turning it to the left or counterclockwise.
4. Pull out the water filter and discard it, as some water may leak out, be careful.
5. Remove all packaging from the new water filter.
6. Place a new water filter into the filter housing.
7. Replace the filter and turn the filter to the right to connect it.
8. You may feel a “click” when the filter is in place, but do not overtighten it.
9. Replace the filter cover (if applicable).
10. Reset the refrigerator water filter indication on the dispenser (if applicable).
11. Empty the water dispenser for at least 5 minutes to remove debris.
12. Run at least 3 gallons to prevent splatter or air from entering water lines.
13. Check the water filter housing area to make sure there are no leaks from the filter.

The water filter for your refrigerator is installed and ready to go. Below are a few different types of refrigerators…

Replace the built-in refrigerator universal water filter (behind the refrigerator)

If you have a refrigerator with a built-in water filter at the back of the refrigerator, you will need to turn off the water supply to the refrigerator. Pull the refrigerator out of the wall and turn off the water in the refrigerator. Take a small bowl or towel and place it under the water filter. Remove the fittings connecting the old water filter to the plumbing. Install a new water filter using the connections on the water supply line or those included with the new water filter. Turn the water back on to make sure there are no leaks. Let the water dispenser run for at least 5 minutes to clear the water lines. Check behind the refrigerator for leaks and if not, replace the refrigerator.

Common Problems When Installing a New Refrigerator Water Filter

If the new filter is difficult to put in place, water pressure may be the cause.
Push the filter in with more force and turn it clockwise.

After installing a new water filter, the water looks dirty.
This is because there are particles in the filter that need to be cleaned, rinse the refrigerator dispenser for at least 5 minutes to completely clean the water lines.

I installed a water filter, but now it makes noise when dispensing water.
This means there is still air in the lines. Just pour water from the dispenser for more than 5 minutes and it will release air and no more sounds will be heard.

Ice cubes look dirty after changing the water filter.
This is because no water has flowed since the replacement of the new filter. If you find dirty ice cubes, discard them and run the water dispenser for more than 5 minutes to completely clean the water lines.

I waited too long to change the water filter and now the water looks dirty.
Replace the water filter as soon as possible. Discard any ice that has built up on the old water filter and be sure to bypass the water and remove about 3 gallons from the system before using the water or ice.

How to Replace Your Kenmore Refrigerator Water Filter: 11 Steps

Refrigerators have filters to remove contaminants from your water and ice dispenser, but you need to replace them every 6 months to keep them fresh. Kenmore refrigerators either have a filter inside the refrigerator near the top of the machine, or the filter is located underneath the doors. Both types of filters require a minimum amount of work, so make sure you have a replacement filter that fits your refrigerator model!

Steps

Method one of 2: Replace the internal water filter

  1. one Purchase a new filter that matches your refrigerator model. Find your refrigerator model number on the inside wall of your refrigerator or in your user manual if you have one. When you buy a new filter, make sure it is compatible with your refrigerator or it may not work or fit. You can buy a filter from the same brand as your refrigerator or a third party filter that fits your model.

    • You can buy refrigerator filters online or at a hardware store.
    • Refrigeration filters typically cost between $25 and $30.

  2. 2 Press or pull the tab on the filter compartment to open it. Open the refrigerator door and look inside for a cylindrical compartment at any of the top corners. Check for a button or tab on the end of the cylinder closest to you. Press or pull the tab to open the compartment and expose the old filter.

    • Most Kenmore Elite refrigerators have filters in the upper corners of the interior.
    • If you don’t know where the filter compartment is located on your refrigerator, refer to your refrigerator’s user manual to find it.

Hint: On some Kenmore models, the filter compartment may be located next to one of the food or fresh vegetable drawers. Look for a small clock face next to the drawers if you don’t see the compartments in the corners.

  3. 3 Turn the filter counterclockwise and pull it out. Take the main filter housing and turn it counterclockwise to loosen it. Turn the filter a quarter of a turn and gently pull it towards you to remove it. If your filter does not turn when you try to turn it, you can simply pull it out of the compartment. Once the filter is removed, it can be discarded or recycled.

    • Place a small hand towel under the filter, as water may drip when removed.
  4. 4 Remove the seal from the end of the new filter. Remove the new filter from the box and locate the cap at one end. Remove the cap from the new filter to expose the port that connects to your refrigerator. Some filters may also have a piece of foil covering the end. If your filter has foil, be sure to remove it before putting the filter back in the refrigerator.

  5. 5 Screw the new filter into the compartment clockwise. Insert the ported end of the filter into the hole inside the filter compartment. Hold the filter horizontal so that you can easily align the screw-in threads. Turn the filter a quarter of a turn clockwise to secure the filter in place. Once the filter is attached, close the compartment to seal it.

    • If your filter does not wrap, simply insert a port into the end of the filter to secure it.
  6. 6 Press the Filter Reset button if the indicator above it is yellow or red. When you change the filter, the “Filter Reset” button next to the water dispenser may turn yellow or red. After installing a new filter, keep the button pressed for about 3 seconds so that the refrigerator detects the new filter. The light will either go out or turn blue or green.

    • Buttons can be on the inside of the refrigerator door if they are not on the front.
    • If the light does not change color, try removing the filter and reinserting it.

    Advertising

Method 2 of 2: Replacing the filter at the bottom of the refrigerator

  1. one Buy a new filter that matches your refrigerator model. Check the model number on the refrigerator in the user manual or on the inside of the refrigerator. Make a note of the model number so you don’t forget it. Look online or in hardware stores for filters that are compatible with your refrigerator, otherwise the filter won’t fit or won’t work properly.

    • You can choose a Kenmore filter or buy a third party filter if it fits your refrigerator.
    • Each filter costs about $30, but you can save money by purchasing multiple filters.
  2. 2 Turn the handle on the bottom of the refrigerator counterclockwise to pull it out. Locate the filter scale attached to the grill under the refrigerator doors. Turn the disc counterclockwise a quarter of a turn to unlock it from its place, and then pull the filter out of the refrigerator until it is completely removed.

    • Place a small hand towel under the filter compartment in case water drips when removed.

Tip: If the filter does not turn in either direction, the filter turns off when the button next to the dial is pressed. Press the button to detach the filter and pull it out to remove.

  3. 3 Place the handle on the new filter. See which way the disk on the end of your old filter slides and push or pull the disk perpendicular to the filter to disengage it. Align the edges on the end of your new filter with the slot on the dial and push it into place until it locks into place. When you’re done, you can throw away or recycle the old filter.

    • If the disc does not slip, try pulling on it until it comes out of the filter. Then press the handle on the end of the new filter.
  4. 4 Place the new filter back in the refrigerator and turn it clockwise. Insert the end of the filter that connects to the refrigerator into the filter compartment until it clicks into place. Turn the disc clockwise a quarter of a turn to lock it in place. Once the filter is fixed, you can use the water dispenser and ice cube in your refrigerator again.

    • Push in the filter until it locks into place, if you pressed the button to remove the old one.
  5. 5 Press the Filter Reset button for 3 seconds if it is lit orange or amber. Replacing the filter may cause an error in your refrigerator if it detects that it is missing. Find the “Filter Reset” button next to the water dispenser and hold it for 3 seconds. The indicator color will change from yellow or orange to green or blue.

    • Modern refrigerators may have a touch menu to reset the filter.
    • If the light does not change color, try removing the filter and reinserting it.
