Today we will discuss whether it is possible to put a refrigerator next to a gas or electric stove in the kitchen. We will answer right away – it is possible, but not necessary! But why this should not be done – the question is already quite extensive and we will fully reveal it in this article.

But, if you really have no way out, then there is an opportunity to minimize the risks of such a neighborhood. And we will also tell you this and show you with examples how to arrange everything.

How far should the refrigerator be from the stove?

Ideally, there should be some kind of cabinet between the refrigerator and the stove, preferably at least 25 centimeters wide. And if there’s more, it’s even better. And not only in terms of safety, but also convenience.

Why shouldn’t a refrigerator be placed next to a stove?

There are a lot of arguments against it, ranging from the usual loss of comfort to the premature failure of the refrigerator. Moreover, we draw your attention to the fact that there is no difference whether to put a refrigerator next to a gas stove or an electric one. The sides of them are heated in the same way, especially when it comes to a working oven. But let’s go in order.

The heat from the stove makes the refrigerator work to the limit

Some people think that the proximity to the hot stove can cause the compartment in the refrigerator to not cool very well, but that’s all. Rather, temporarily heat up from the heat. That is, it is worth a little wind up and the problem will be solved.

But it’s not that simple. Everything is just the opposite. The warmer it is around, the more intensively the compressor catches up with cold … And the optimum temperature will not fall in the refrigerator, no. Only now, for the technology itself, this state of affairs is completely unhelpful.

The refrigerator is designed for certain intervals of automatic switching on of the compressor. But when the temperature rises from the outside, the compressor is forced to work simply for wear and tear in order to maintain the desired temperature.

Naturally, the service life of equipment, in this case, is many times reduced. Especially if you have a large family and the stove works very often. Heat the same kettle five times a day, boil some soup, heat some dish…

And even if you just fried eggs, the side of the stove heats up and cools down not as fast as it seems. Heat, accordingly, first of all gets to the adjacent side of the refrigerator and keeps the elevated temperature for a long time.

And the compressor turns on, turns on, without breaks for lunch and dinner. And even without the breaks.

Not only are you killing your fridge motor, but you are regularly overpaying for electricity. The refrigerator “pulls” a lot without it, but if you force it to work 5-6 times more intensively, you yourself understand how much it will cost.

After all, in order to cool the chamber, the refrigerator needs electricity to “jump”. So think about whether it is profitable to arrange the elements of the kitchen in this way. But, if you are rich, this argument will not convince you either. Then maybe the next one will sound sane?

Food spoilage

Similar “swings” are not in vain for the internal microclimate of the refrigerator compartment. There is no cooling stability, you understand, therefore, it will not work in any way to maintain an even temperature.

And as a result, sometimes the products will simply freeze slightly. This is especially bad for fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs. After a bunch of parsley is covered with a thin crust of ice, the smell will almost disappear and there will be almost no taste left.

Also, red caviar doesn’t like freezing very much. It becomes completely different in taste, deformed.

Of course, this will not happen immediately, but after a couple of years of operation of equipment in a similar mode. And further! The freezer will also be covered with ice. And it will have to be cleaned much more often than under normal conditions.

Difficulty in dealing with greasy drops on the walls of the refrigerator

But on the other hand, Khrushchev houses have a wonderful plus – the interior partitions there are not concrete and not load-bearing. Therefore, if your refrigerator does not fit well on the opposite wall, then you can simply make a small opening in the wall between the kitchen and the living room and build a niche out of it.

Thus, the kitchen will remain uncluttered, the refrigerator door will be flush with the wall, but in its place you can completely install a washing machine. This, after all, is also a problem of Khrushchevs, with their two-meter baths.

And the fact that the wall in the living room will not be even, but with a drop, is even interesting. The ledge can be beautifully beaten as you like, hang pictures, shelves on it.

Another thing: when looking for another place for the refrigerator, do not forget that it is not recommended to put it next to the stove, but also the battery. It will be the same, if not worse. Heating in this case is seasonal, but continuous for many months.

The same applies to the gas pipe. She is warming up, which means she is a bad neighbor for the refrigerator and he does not belong near her.

How can you minimize the risk of having a stove and refrigerator next to each other?

If you have reached this block, then our “horror stories” certainly did not impress you and our rational proposals for moving the refrigerator did not find a response in your soul.

Well, if you really want to put these two things side by side, then you definitely need to separate them somehow, at least with some small partition. Of course, the thicker the insulation, the better, but than nothing at all, a thin piece of some material is still better.

We will give you an example of the most popular options, and you already choose which one you like best.

Before we start looking at thermal insulation with examples, I would like to note this:

It is not worth fixing the shield that will be located between the stove and the refrigerator.

Or rather, fasten “tightly”, for example, with strong glue, such as “liquid nails”, because, who knows, maybe you will ever have a rearrangement and this piece of the plate will interfere?

It is best to buy double-sided tape, it holds very firmly and use it to stick the shield to the surface of the refrigerator. Yes, it’s the refrigerator, because the heated sidewall of the stove will simply melt this glue and nothing will stick.

So, let’s look at protection options.

Plain Chipboard Protective Screen

You can simply buy a piece of laminated chipboard and put it between the stove and the refrigerator. Do not forget only that the side cut will need to be processed with adhesive tape, and this must be ordered at the place of cutting the sheets.

Be sure to match the color of the kitchen furniture. It would be ideal if it were exactly the same as the main array of the kitchen.

Of course, this shield is not for centuries, because chipboard is afraid of hot and moisture, which means that in a few years it may lose its appearance. But, such a thing is very inexpensive and we think you will not go broke if you have to buy another sheet in a couple of years.

Protective screen with tiles

But this option is much more interesting. It will be much easier to wash it and such a design will look more organic (especially if the tile matches the existing “apron”).

In this case, you need to buy not a chipboard sheet, but rather OSB, on which the tile is perfectly glued with special glue. Also, a sheet of thick drywall is suitable. But here do not forget that the gaps between the tiles will need to be well covered up, in order to avoid moisture getting on the drywall.

Protective screen with foil, mirror and glass

This is a great option. Foil or a mirror perfectly reflects heat, and such a partition can be much thinner than other options. The only negative is that the specular reflection is out of place, you can remove it with the help of corrugated glass superimposed on top.

This is the most expensive method, but also the most efficient. The refrigerator will practically not feel the heat from the stove, which means it will serve you faithfully for much longer. In any case, heat reflection is better than simple thermal insulation.

But if you combine these two ways, it will be all right. That is, put a thick shield, and stick foil on top of it.

Why is the neighborhood of a stove and a refrigerator dangerous?

Surely many have heard that it is undesirable to put the stove next to the refrigerator. And why it is impossible to do this, not everyone knows. Many South Korean and Chinese manufacturers have the grill on the sides of the unit instead of the back. When the stove is turned on, heat will fall on this area, which can cause damage to the refrigerator.

In the worst case, heat will turn the paint yellow at the point of contact. However, the plastic handles of the unit and the door frame can be seriously damaged (cracked or melted). The same thing can happen with the rubber bands of the seal if they are close to the hob.

And the last thing – if this appliance is nearby, the stove can only be used from one side. With the standard location of the hob, the dishes can be moved both to the right and to the left. And in this case, one side will be occupied by a refrigerator. In addition, long handles of dishes will rest against the wall of the unit.

All of the above arguments are quite enough to dissuade the owner of the apartment from placing a refrigerator next to the stove. However, what if there is simply no other way out?

How to minimize losses?

Manufacturers indicate that for normal operation of the refrigerator, the stove must stand at a distance of 15 cm or more from it. In other words, it is enough to leave a gap between them and after that you can safely operate the devices. The empty gap does not look very aesthetically pleasing, so free space can be occupied by a small custom-made locker. Of course, you can’t put dishes and groceries in this one, but the necessary household chemicals, sponges, gloves can fit in it.

An alternative to a mini cabinet can be a special heat-resistant partition that will serve as a reliable insulation between the stove and the refrigerator.

Materials that can be used to protect equipment are divided into:

  1. Organic. These include chipboard plates, foam sheets, reeds, cork cloth. Such materials are sufficiently resistant to moisture, but their cost is quite high. In addition, they can be deformed when exposed to high temperatures.
  2. Inorganic. They are inexpensive, tolerate heat very well, but lose their properties under the influence of moisture. Inorganic materials include gypsum and asbestos cardboard, mineral fiber.

The insulation sheet is laid between the walls of household appliances. It will be able to protect the refrigerator from overheating and prevent its premature wear, but it will not save you from drops of fat.

How to fix the insulation?

When installing a heat-insulating sheet, do not forget about the aesthetic side of the issue. For example, the edge of chipboard without cladding does not look very attractive: chips of various sizes and a rough surface immediately catch the eye. Therefore, the end of the sheet must be covered with a decorative film, laminated or hidden with a suitable profile.

It is also not worth fixing the sheet “for centuries” with liquid nails or glue.
